I'm currently using an unlocked G1 on AT&T. I went way over my data usage ($1200 over) and AT&T said they would backtrack it if I signed up for a data plan. I said ok and they gave me the Data Unlimited plan ($15). What is the difference between the Data Unlimited Plan ($15) and the PDA Personal Plan ($30)? Will I be charged more since I have a smartphone and am using the internet as much as I want or will the Data Unlimited cover that?
No, you get charged for the plan you have. Your device is considered a PDA (according to them that is) since it has a QWERTY keyboard. There's absolutely no difference but ATT just wants us PDA users more since we apparently get more out of the internet. If you don't need it, i'd call and cancel it.
I got the iPhone yesterday and 3 minutes later, I sold it. Called them up and she removed it for me.
Well I want to keep the internet plan so I can use the internet without being charged per usage. So just to clarify, because AT&T assigned the Data Unlimited plan (on the website since my phone is from T-Mobile it's just represented by a generic phone and not a smartphone) to me it will cover all my internet usage?

Yes (except tether which you need a separate plan for).
I believe the data unlimited just includes internet access, while the more expensive PDA Personal plan includes unlimited messaging ( sms, mms ) too. I think there in lies the cost difference.

On the data unlimited package, on the pda personal package they are included.
I have the pda personal package with no separate sms package and get unlimited texts.
Which is why, even though his phone is considered a pda, he is still getting the cheaper plan.
That's the 50 dollar plan, right?
That's the $30.00 dollar PDA personal plan.
that is on top of the $39.99 phone plan.
$15 unlimited plan!??!?!
what state do you get this plan in? i'm moving . . . i pay either $50-$65 for unlimited (5GB)!
5GB = unlimited --------- weird eh
ciao

Is the built in WiFi Hotspot feature free? I don't think a warning comes up when I try to use it.

What do you mean "free"?
It is a built-in feature of the Sensation...
You don't have to pay to HTC to use it.
Your provide might charge you additionally when you use your data plan with any other device than your mobile.

In another thread; comments were it's free as long as you don't "Overuse " the connection. Don't know what the limit is.

You're getting confused with a data plan. Using the WiFi Hotspot is free, unless you go over your data plan (unless your data plan is unlimited).
Example:
your data plan is 500mb
You use WiFi Hotspot and use 300mb
You use mobile browser and use 100mb - total used 400mb
You use WiFi Hotspot again and use 200mb - total used 600mb - OVER LIMIT.
So basically, using data in the browser or an app like Google Reader is the same as using WiFi Hotspot; you will not get charged unless you go over your data plan limit, which is set by your carrier (Verizon, Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile etc).
I'm with Tmobile and it's unlimited data, but your internet is capped after 2gb of data. I was just unsure if TMo will charge for using teh feature on your phone. I guess it's okay.

As redbullcat said, u don't get charged to use the app, just takes away from ur data. I for one use this feature a lot(5gb cap) at work since I don't have WiFi there and my 4G speeds r amazing.

Note: As per a T-MobileUS rep here near Philadelphia, they are "working towards making it a pay-for feature". It's free for now.
Because hotspot works in infrastructure mode natively, I expect that wifi-tether will behave wonderfully even after TMO tries pushing the "feature".

Awesome. I'm new to TMobile and I hope to get the Android Preferred Data Plan upgrade. Thanks!
T-Mobile may send you a text notifying you that if you choose to continue tethering, they will apply the $15/month Tethering option.
If you don't blow your data usage out if the water you probably won't receive anything.
I still have yet to figure out where the "abuse" limit has been set.

just got a text from virgin mobile stating that the next new month will cut down to 2.5 gb of data, just wondering if anybody else got this message? I do use alot of data of maybe its just me
A lot of carriers have either killed or are killing their unlimited data plans these days. I believe the only Carrier that still has unlimited data plans is T-Mobile. I guess each company underestimated how much data each user would use and decided to phase out all their unlimited data plans because they could not make a profit.

Hey everyone, just had a quick question.
Is anyone currently, or previously, gotten the Nexus S successfully working on at&t's $50 unlimited everything plan? Data doesn't seem to work and I've tried a couple APNs. So, has anyone had success with this?
Thanks!
If they at&t catch you IMEI as a smartphone and a data hog they will cancel you if you don't get a data plan.

Why? Sounds like unlimited everything should include a data plan.
Not to be off topic, but AT&T is like that. If they realize you have an Android Smartphone, I am sure they will try to add other 'data' charges. Simple Mobile would be the way to go for Prepaid. It's $40 a month unlimited everything. And data should work out of the sim card box.

Oh yeah. I forgot this is att were talking about. Bunch of scum bags.
I just signed up for Verizon's new unlimited plan. The only part I don't like about it is that once you use 10GB/month with mobile hotspot (tethering), they cut down the tethering speed to 3G. I was wondering if there were a way to mask that usage to where it shows up as regular phone data usage. Any ideas would be helpful!
Thanks,

I'm not sure that really answers my question...
I'm not really here to talk about price, just the issue of masking the mobile hotspot data.
Let's try and stay on topic please, thank you.
I just asked exactly how much it would be to switch my two lines after taxes, fees, discounts, phones, etc. The hotspot fees aren't the only things hidden by advertising, but thanks for pointing out the cap.

I believe it's $80/mo for one line.
On my 7-line account, it costs exactly $15.60/mo more (up from 10GB data) so it's a fantastic deal!
It's $110 for 4 lines (and only $100 if you autopay and go paper free).
It's $180 for four lines. How did you come up with $110?

i was going to ask the same question. im currently trying to see if disabling tether provisioning would do the trick, but i cant find verizons track of how much hotspot i've used... disabling provisioning works to give old sprint plans hotspot to begin with so i'd think it works but no way to know yet

I don't think there's much you can do about it on the phone end. I could be wrong but my guess is that they track it on their end and throttle you down from their end. They know how much data you're using all the time. Logon to your account using their app or a computer and you can see how much data you've used at any time during the current billing cycle. Pretty sure it's all set up on their end and theirs not much you can do about it. But, then again, like is said, I could be wrong.

It's only "tethering" data that has the 10GB limit. They have to be able to tell the difference between "tethered data" and regular data from the phone.
how fast is the "3G" speed?

3G is different for most carriers. I believe it's usually around 300-400Mb/s

I pay a little more for just one line. I have the old unlimited plan from Verizon
I just switched from the grandfathered unlimited plan ($110/month) to the new plan ($80/month)
I switched my 7 lines over to unlimited. I can confirm that the claim of "reserving the right to throttle speeds in congested situations" is true. I used 86 GB of cellular data and have not seen any type of throttling.
Normally I wouldn't use anywhere near that, but I wanted to test if VZW would give me a "permanent throttle" for the billing period, nope!

I have a single line on the old plan also. I don't think I can do it. Especially since the new plans price will probably go up anyways since it's an "introductory price". Also not eligible for discounts.

Around 500kbps. An important distinction to make is that you are still connected to LTE, just with your rate throttled. So you still get the benefit of lower latency from LTE versus 3G.
