[Q] how to make my wireless work for ubuntu - General Questions and Answers

I install Ubuntu 11.04 for my laptop but only wired work but not wireless? Can someone help me?

It's very possible that you have a wireless chipset where the drivers are not open source and thereby integrated directly into Ubuntu. What I would do is plug in via wire and then open your restricted hardware manager, otherwise known in some versions of Ubuntu as "hardware drivers". See if something comes up there. If anything will, it's likely to be Broadcom. From there, download it, reboot, and you should be wireless.
Make sure your hardware switch is not disabled as well, as that would directly effect Ubuntu's ability to pick up wireless networks.
Can you post the output of "lspci" from terminal?

i'll let u know.. thanks

Wifi Tether to Ubuntu 9.10

Hey everyone, just finished installing Ubuntu to my dell mini 10v netbook. I really like it so far but I have hit a problem that may be a potential deal breaker. Has anyone running Ubuntu 9.10 been able to tether their phone to their computer?. It does not seem to connect to my phone running this app for me. It sees the SSID, and i tell it to connect, and then I just get that circle thing for a couple of minutes then it gives up and connects to my main router if its in range.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm not sure if its Ubuntu or the app, it worked perfect with XP
I don't run Ubuntu on my netbook so it may be slightly different, but I have it working great on mine running Arch Linux. Wifi tether uses an Ad-Hoc mode where most routers/access points use Infrastructure mode. You may have to tell network-manager or whatever controls your wireless settings to use Ad-Hoc. If that doesn't work you could set it up manually through the command line or make a little script with those commands to do it so you don't have to type them in every time.
thanks for the reply. I did some searching and came across this page http://www.ubuntugeek.com/creating-an-adhoc-host-with-ubuntu.html and i hooked my phone up to my windows computer, copied the info verbatim to my ubuntu netbook setting up a manual connection like that page suggested and it says it connects, but my phone doesnt show anything is connected and it wont go online
I am able to tether just fine via my Dell mini9 running Ubuntu 9.10. Are you able to connect to other networks?
yeah i can connect to my home fios router just fine
FoxRacR17 i was having the same issues with my dell 1501 laptop.. Looks like your laptop might be using the bcm43xx chip-set from broadcom which doesn't support ad-hoc fully native yet on all cards.

I was having issues trouble shooting WMWifiRouter and Ubuntu.
I couldn't pin down if it was Ubuntu or WMWifiRouter which was having the problem connecting.. I could see the Ad-Hoc network in Ubuntu when i would try to connect it would just hang. I played with all the settings in WMWifiRouter to no avail.
Turns out it was my wireless driver.

I had to revert back to Ndiswrapper.. But it worked!!! Those having Linux issues check the driver.. I didn't have a windows box with wireless to check.. So took me longer hopefully this might save you some time!

Try Ndiswrapper from the windows drivers on HP's site. Let us know the results..
I'm having this problem with an atheros 5G chipset
Thanks for the replies guys, i got it fixed. I saw people saying to try the netbook remix version of ubuntu so I went ahead and installed it. At first it wasnt detecting any hardware drivers so it wasnt even giving me the option to install drivers for my wireless this time. But i went into terminal (with my ethernet cord plugged in and netbook connected to the internet) and issued "sudo apt-get update" and it went thru and downloaded a bunch of stuff that took a while, and then i went back to restricted drivers and this time I had TWO options for my wireless card, one that was licensed propitiatory from broadcom themselves labeled "Broadcom STA wirless driver" and one that was licensed as free and labeled "Broadcom B43 wireless driver" I installed the STA one and now my netbook connects perfectly to my hero and i can go online again thru my phone. Hope this helps you guys out

[Q] USB tethering on SK4G?

just wondering if there is any way to get usb tethering working on Linux. My last phone (LG Optimus T) worked out of the box, but my SK4G has never tethered. I've tried on Ubuntu, Debian and OpenSuSE to no avail. FWIW I just tried tethering on my old phone and it does not work either, but that could be because I am running an unstable ICS build. The last time I used it, I was on Cyanogenmod7.1 and everything was fine.
Could it be a kernel module is no longer present in the generic Linux kernel? Weird thing is though that I just built the latest kernel and made sure the Android modules were included and still, no tethering.
PDA Net works fine on OSX. I don't have a Windows install to test with though so I can't confirm whether it works on Windows.
I do believe PDA net works in Windows, but I've never been able to do any kind of usb tethering in Ubuntu. I was under the impression it just doesn't work, unless someone else knows a way?
All you should need is a generic "NDIS" driver. Not sure if one exists for *nix or not, but I would think one would.
The Sidekick is just really not a good phone when it comes to drivers and things like that.

...but for USB Tether that shouldn't matter. The generic ALL SAMSUNG PHONES driver should work, and on top of that, the generic NDIS driver should work with ANY android phone. (again, there is a generic Microsoft NDIS driver for windows, not sure about *nix, but I'd be very surprised if such a thing didn't exist)
not to split hairs but incorrect on all accounts. There is no need whatsoever to use NDIS drivers since Android support is built specifically into the Linux kernel. NDIS is not really a solution that is used anymore. The vast majority of regular ethernet and Wifi NICs work out of the box with the exception of some that have proprietary kernel modules that aren't shipped by default with distros due to licensing conflicts.
that being said, USB tethering is a whole different ball game. And as far back as Ubuntu 9.10 USB tethering has worked out of the box on Android phones. But since I think 11.04 (probably with kernel 2.34 I believe) it has ceased working. I came across a kernel patch for the USB ethernet modules used by Android devices, but I have yet to have any success with tethering, even on the patched kernel.
As I said, I don't have a Windows install on any of my computers, we're all Linux and OSX here. PDA Net works just fine on OSX.
wired tether doesn't work on my old phone either, but that may be because it's running a very bleeding edge unstable ROM.
Interesting. All I know is my CarPC uses tinyXP which includes no drivers. I downloaded the microsoft NDIS driver (just a .inf file), and it allowed my USB Tether to start working. I hope that clue helps you in your search for a solution.
UPDATE: Actually, I guess this most recent reinstall I did use samsung drivers. The drivers I used are attached in a zip. I know it's not *nix drivers, but maybe it will help you find the right thing.

Share USB connection over Wifi/Bluetooth. Possible?

Is there an app/program or is it otherwise possible to share a usb device plugged into an android phone with a desktop computer, or vice versa over wifi or bluetooth. For example plugging a DSLR into my android phone and having it show up on the desktop computer as if it were connected via usb. There would be a ton of uses for this if it is possible. It would change your phone into a sort of wireless USB port.
there is software USB Network Gate with Win and Linux versions which probably could help you, but I don't know if it will work with Android...
I had run into USB Network Gate in my search for something similar for android. Seems like a great tool. If only it were able to run on android and was a bit cheaper.
Anyone know of something like this that will run on android?

How to set up the wired USB LAN adaptor?

Now I want to use a wired USB LAN adaptor on my S4 to access the wired network. However, after I insert the USB LAN adaptor, it powers up but cannot connect to the LAN. There is no connection. How should I set up? Thanks.
love to help.
I would love to help.. but I need a little more information first... like what android version ie. 4.4.2. (Found in Settings.apk under 'about phone'.)
Second which type of Computer are you trying to utilize? Like Windows 7 Home Premium or Mac OSX leopard/snow leopard. Or even Linux like redhat or Gnome.. this will allow me to rule out software/hardware issues and focus on the exact circumstances your in.. thx bud.

He's trying to connect his phone to the network with a USB ethernet adapter.... I think you completely missed the point of the post.
Well if so thanks for the info.. I was simply trying to narrow down the source. In which way did it seem as though I missed the point? The point was he/she had trouble with their phone connecting to a network.. right? Well in my experience.. most home networks are routed through a PC.. so my obvious conclusion was the other end like not the phone... idk I'm kinda new here and am doing my best.. lol anyway thx.

Connect emulated device on Linux to a car (Android Auto)

Hi!
I'm trying to establish a connection between an Android Virtual Device and a car. The goal is to run the AVD on a Linux laptop and connect it to the car via USB. Ideally the AVD would recognize the car's HU (and also the other way around) which should make it possible to use Android Auto.
I read a lot about the Android Open Accessory Protocol and how the connection is established. I also found posts about people tunneling USB connections from a Linux host to an Emulator using the command below:
emulator @AVDname -qemu -usb -device usb-ehci.id=ehci -device usb-host,vendorid=0x----,productid=0x----
Some also say you need to build a custom kernel beforehand so that USB on the Emulator is enabled in the first place. So far the Linux machine doesn't recognize the HU at all, which makes it impossible to use the USB tunnel since I don't know the vendor and device id.
The HU probably acts as host and expects a device, so does the Linux machine. This is somehow where my progress stopped.
Does someone know if that kind of connection is even possible with a emulated device? Do AVD's support the Accessory Mode in the first place? Is there a way around this Host to Host problem?
Any hints or ideas would mean a lot to me!
