[Q] Internet connection problem - HTC Desire S

Hello all
I'm having some internet issues right now. I can connect internet pretty well on wi-fi but when using network I cant open any web pages no matter what browser I'm using but I can use other internet related programs (Facebook, gmail , market etc.). This is the second time this problem occurs. First time I was using stock rom then I changed to virtuous unity and the problem was solved but now it started again. Anyone experienced this before? Or what can I do to solve this?

Could be kernel related
Swyped from HTC Desire S using XDA Premium

If its kernel related what can i do about it?

Have you tried flashing the Unity V4 kernel from here?....

You should always try to provide as much information and details as possible, for example....
All of this can be got from Settings->About Phone-> software
What ROM?,
What RADIO (baseband)?
What Kernel?
Can be got by rebooting to recovery
what HBOOT?

Sorry for missing details.
Virtuous Unity v.1.31.0
20.28I.30.085AU_3805.06.02.03_M
Kernel unavailable
HBOOT: HBOOT 6.98.1002
Radio from bootloader. 3805.06.02.03_M
I think these are enough, I'll try to flash new kernel but before that i want to ask that if i'll lose anything? Or what will change?

Having the same experienced with you. Got problem with MMS too. Just now, I've called my network provider, it said that I need to tick "Data enabled" first if I want to use internet connection. If untick it, we cannot use the internet connection. Don't know whether working for you or not, but seriously working for me.

One more thing, u need to setting APN manually. I mean, for 3G and MMS.

I don't use that ROM myself, but, I'm aware that they've released a later version about a week ago, so I'd be tempted to perform a full factory reset and then any additional wipe instructions that come with ROM installation which you'll usually find in post #1 and then upgrade to that.
I'd then apply which ever kernel that they recommend in the ROM thread (or you may find the new version comes with the new kernel). If you then continue to get issues try posting in the ROM thread as well as updating this thread as this may bring you more results....

It might not be related with rom because same issue happened before when i was using non-rooted stock rom. Anyway i going to apply new update with full wipe. I hope it wont occur again.

Issue with the newly released update for Desire S ?

Hi there. Recently I reset my phone and while setting up I got an alert for update for my Desire S, about 35 mb. After updation my current version details are :
Code:
Kernel version now is
2.6.35.10-g2ee27f5
[email protected] # 1
Wed Jun 8 19:20:03 CST 2011
Build number is
1.47.720.1 CL 78999 release-keys
Software Number
1.47.720.1
The problem I am facing is frequent network disconnections even though the network strength is good. The interval is not fixed. Sometimes it works fine for 5-6 hrs, sometimes keeps getting disconnected every half hour. I tried removing battery, sim card and re inserting, nothing works. Anyone else facing this issue ? What can I do to solve this ?
network disonections?? wifi or mobile network?

Mobile network. I did not test WiFi. I tried giving manual network selection as well as automatic, problem is still same.
If u want data connection always to be on, you have to make sure that in settings this option is ticked. I have dutch language, so I don't know how it's called exactly, but has to be something like "keep data always on"

The issue is not data connection. If I tick "keep data always on", it is like telling I want to be continuously connected to my GPRS/EDGE connection. My issue has nothing to do with mobile internet. It is the basic network connectivity. Simple GSM signal.
My girlfriend has the same problem after the last update and i have heard more complaints, i want to unlock that one and put some custom ROM flavor on it
What's your baseband (radio) version? Maybe an update of that will help...
Check developer threads on how to do that. You'll find the latest radio versions as well as older ones there for download. Hope this helps.

I am sorry I did not understand that. If you are talking about the frequency then my carrier frequency is 1800Mhz.
The "radio baseband" is simply said the driver for GSM, WLAN, Bluetooth etc.
You can check the version you got in the phone info... should be in-between "android version" and "kernel"...
I assume you don't have S-Off, right? In case not, you can't update the radio, so my above post is useless.
I'd suggest to try a reset again (holding vol down and power when booting the phone and then do a factory reset, not the reset via >> settings >> privacy), or bring your phone back and have it replaced in warranty...
Sent from my Desire S using Tapatalk
since your signal was good before update its probably a radio issue if so you can s-off your device & try a different radio or you can do a factory reset
@original poster.
I can confirm I have this issue since the last update, exactly the same symptoms as you. In the previous 4 months of ownership I never had this problem occur even once. I have read several reports of this issue on different forums. I personally haven't done a factory reset because it takes too much to reconfigure my phone. On another forum a user claims to have tried a factory reset and it made no difference.

Ok. The baseband version I curently have is
Code:
20.28I.30.085AU_3805.06.02.03_M
I have S-ON. After reset, should I install these new updates again.
The updates should be installed already, so no need to install them again. I'd suggest to backup your apps and sms with "my backup" first, so life is a bit easier when setting it up again. ;-)
The reset via bootloader takes quite some time, so no worries if your phone seems not to be doing anything for several minutes!

Oh ! So even if I reset, the updates won't be rolled back ? So if the problem was with the update, the issue will still remain ?
if you dont want to do a reset you can s-off & then go back to a older radio
if you want to have s-on then you can follow this guide & return to a RUU with the older radio in it
S-Offing your device is a good alternative, that's true. But if you're not into this, then you better leave it. Check out the developer section for this ("Revolutionary").
So... Yeah, system updates will still be there. However, a "deep reset" can help because everything is initialized again from scratch. No guarantee that it will be ok afterwards, but it's sure worth to give it a try!
However, before doing a reset via bootloader, check out if thereis an RUU for your provider. If so, use the RUU instead of a reset in bootloader. This will flash your phone software completely new. Run the program, and it will tell you what to do.
If there's no RUU available that fits you, then do the reset via bootloader.

Interesting. After reseting the phone via bootloader, network issue seems to be fixed. I will check for few days and post back here if the issue exists.

I can`t enable internet in MIUI

After installing MIUI I can`t enable data transfer (2g/3g internet). Data transfer is turning on, but there is no 2g/3g logo and internet. This happens after installing all MIUI stock and custom roms. APN settings is correct, before it was ok. I`m installing via Clockwork recovery v5. Device is G2x (P999)
What should I do? How to enable it?
I believe for the g2x you should see an H next to the bars, that is if you are in a good service area.
Otherwise I think it also shows G, and E.
If it doesn't have anything at all, then I'm not sure.
Does the internet work when you go inti the browser?

I'm having the same issue....
im using rg2x right now and the only way to fix it is with a hard reboot every time i turn my phone back on
try reflashing the faux kernel it worked for me to fix a problem i had not being able to turn my wifi on it should work for you too
what i have a problem is the backupp app does nto work for me im runing rg2x miui by richie
Yah I have the same problem, I notice it works but when you use WiFi then your done w/ the wifi and shut it off the regular cell data never comes back on - You have to completely reboot the phone...I'm using SINGH-UI - same thing

I had this problem before, go to ur APNs and go to authentication and make the authentication "None" instead of "Not set". That will enable ur data

Hey go to SETTINGS->MOBILE NETWORKS->ACCESS POINT NAMES-> in here select option button in your android phone, in the menu select NEW APN, you will get the APN settings as seen in this. In the link ACCESS NUMBER = SERVER in mobile.
As I am not allowed to post link for first ten TIMES! will guide you through
google search -> "vodafone apn address" the third result will be GPRS APN Settings with Username and Password - Modem Unlock. Click it and follow the method above mentioned.

Wifi error/not working Sensation ICS 6.5.1

When I first booted up WiFi worked for about 2 minutes. Found my home network, connected...appeared all was well.
Then suddenly it stopped and now it'll just read Turning Wi-Fi On... indefinitely. Eventually it'll say error.
Originally superwiped before flashing ROM, flashed the suggested radio.
I tried clearing cache and dalvik, didn't help.
My phone hates wifi apparently. Wi-Fi being junk is the reason I rooted in the first place. Was hoping this'd fix it. The fact that it's "intermittent" makes me wonder if it really is a hardware fault.
Any ideas?
Android Version: 4.0.3
Sense: 3.6
Android Revolution 6.5.1 by mike1986
Kernel: 3.0.16 SebastionFM #1
Hboot- 1.27.1100
Radio- 11.22.3504.07_M
Tried a factory restart w/ sim pulled, still nothing.
The odd thing is how it worked at first when I booted up..then stopped functioning alltogether.
I had the EXACT same thing happen to me this morning. I went to bed last night and wifi was working great. This morning when I took it off the charger I noticed that wifi wasn't running. Tried turning it on an it wouldn't turn on. I thought it may be a glitch so I tried restarting. No change. Realized I had fastboot checked so restarted without it. No change.
If I go to the Settings menu under the icon to switch on wifi it says error. When I try and turn it on it has the message about turning on wifi for a few minutes and then the switch turns off. I also noticed that it is draining my battery VERY fast (most likely because it is continually trying to to turn on wifi)
Not sure what happened or what would cause this. I'm running ARHD 6.2.1.
I was planning on upgrading this afternoon after work to 6.5.1. Hopefully this new wifi issue doesn't get in the way of that...
Any help would be appreciated.

You need to update your firmware first!
In ARHD thread Mike1986 states: 3.32.401.x firmware is required! So go to this tread and get the necessary firmware and you wouldn't have any wifi issues.
I'm also running 6.5.1 and have wifi on for almost the entire day without any problems!
Thanks for the reply BioTeck. I can't speak for BrokenWiFi but for me I've been running on 6.2.1 for about 2 weeks no (with the suggested firmware for that version) and haven't had a problem. Then all of the sudden this morning it started having this problem.
Any suggestions on what I can try? This evening I plan on upgrading firmware to latest as well as upgrading to 6.5.1 so I'm hoping that helps but are there any other suggestions I can try?

If I were you I would try to flash the latest version of ARHD 6.5.1 and see how that goes? For me 6.5.1 is rock stable, fast and it feels smooth!

I did update it originally.
I decided to go through again...I just downloaded 3.32.401 from that thread...flashed it, superwiped and installed ROM. Still no dice. It reads all the same as it did before in the "software information" area.
I don't think I could have booted w/o that firmware correct? I'm coming from gingerbread originally...
Am I missing something?

Strange.... Apparently it's an ICS bug and has been posted here!
[09Jan]Turning on Wi-Fi gives an error after flashing hacked Kernel
This seems to happen if you flash the 4.0.1 kernel on a 4.0.3 ROM, make sure you've flashed the correct kernel for your ROM base and cleared both cache and dalivk after flashing.

On the ARHD thread, there seems other to have the same problem. Some of them solved the problem by reflashing. Perhaps you can try that as well and post this problem in ARHD's thread as well...

This happen to me way way long ago, back during the series 3 ARHD. After going through many things, a simple rom reflash fixed it for me.
I was never able to figure out why. I asked around in here and else where and there were some talk of it back then with a few tips for solution, which did not work.
As far as I could tell, that was the only time ever that I flashed a rom without turning off wifi before rebooting into recovery. I have since then diligently turn off wifi before flashing anything. Never encountered the problem again.
P.s. I recalled reading something about how the wifi is stuck on "On", while the rom trying to turn something that's already On, On and errored itself.

Wanted to update on my progress. I solved the issue on my phone:
I was messing around with it today while waiting for a meeting to start and I found where the wifi settings, etc are stored. It ended up being a corrupt/invalid wpa_supplicant.conf file. All I had to do was pull that file out from the directory and turn on wifi and *poof* it worked again. When I turned wifi on it created a new file and everything has been great so far this afternoon.
In case anyone wants to give it a shot who is having wifi issues you can find the wpa_supplicant.conf file in /data/misc/wifi/ directory on your phone. Simply cut/rename the file and put it somewhere else. If you have wifi passwords you want to save, you can open the original file using a text editor and copy the settings over to the new file.
I believe the cause of my issue was actually Titanium Backup. Looking at the last time it backed up my wifi settings was back when I wasn't running ICS yet. Yesterday I did restore an app using it and must have accidentally restored that old backup. Their formats are different from Gingerbread to ICS apparently and it was causing errors.

Unfortunately after reading your latest post, Broken WiFi, I don't know that the fix that worked for me applies to you but just in case --> Are you using (or did you use) Titanium Backup to restore any of your apps? Is it possible you have a corrupt file as well? Obviously you are wiping out that file when you superwipe so I don't think you have the same issue but it is probably worth checking.
Funny, it worked!
I had a feeling the supplicant was the problem..
In my last rom it wouldn't let me touch anything in /data even though I was SU and S-OFF.....
So I'd just delete the one in /system... but it never helped.
Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooohooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Seriously, I've spent like 15 hours troubleshooting this...reading every thread on the net.
Never thought to try and delete the one in /data in this rom.
THANK YOU so very very much.
I can't post in DEV, but maybe you could let some people know over there that it's a fix.
I copied wpa_supplicant.conf from gb miui and it seems to be working for now, will test it some more..
Sounds like hardware..I had a problem with what turned out to be the battery cover, it has the antennas built in to it.. changed this and was good again. Worked for me..

After deleting the above suggest file, my wifi no longer says "turning on" but says error. If I hit turn on, it reverts back to constantly saying "turning on".

One thing you might try doing is deleting it and then try restarting the phone. That would be the next step I would do. If it doesn't work then you might have to start looking into a hardware or rom issue.
After you try deleting and then restart if that doesn't work I'd back everything up and try flashing your rom again.

I've reflashed rom and firmware many times using different kernels and techniques etc. I can't believe it to be hardware related as everything was fine with version 6.3.1 and firmware 3.30... then updated to 6.5.1 and 3.32.. fine again however a couple of hours later WiFi was off and continued to say "turning on". I'm going to try to downgrade to 6.3.1 and 3.30 again to see if that helps..
I've having the same problem. I updated to firmware 3.32 and ROM ARHD 6.5.1 last Saturday and WiFi seemed to be working until yesterday. Today it won't work at all - I can't make or receive calls and had to move the SIM card to a Blackberry curve so I could get some work done.
Tonight I tried deleting the wifi supplicant file posted earlier and that seems to help for one or two calls then it's back to no calls at all. So then I wiped the cache and devlik cache and tried again. That may have helped, but I'm not sure yet.
I'm starting to see a real trend in these WiFi issues. There have been a lot of threads about it lately. I don't know what is causing the problem though.
I had my WiFi shut off again today with the same issue. The fix I posted earlier worked again but having to do this every few days is not going to be acceptable...
I REALLY am enjoying ics and arhd 6 but I'm afraid between this WiFi problem and the fact that T-Mobile WiFi calling doesnt work I might be going back to gingerbread...

[Q]wifi problems in ICS

hello,
i've been trying to get my mt4gs to turn wifi on in ics. when i turn it on it says, "turning on" but just goes back to "off". i tried turning it on via settings and via the panel. i do a full wipe every install -reset data, clear cache, wipe dalvik cache. also not sure if it's related adb cannot detect device when booted but works fine in recovery when in ics.
i've read and tried the various .zip files for various radio/kernel posted by football but still no go. i may be overlooking a step when flashing but here is my device info:
CWM Recovery version 5.5.0.4 also used 5.0.2.7
Baseband: 11.59.3504.00U_11.16.3504.20_2
HBOOT: Unlocked
DOUBLESHOT PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-1.45.0013
RADIO-11.16.3504.20_4
Nov 21 2011
it works using gingerbread - tried OTA Stock, as well as bulletproof and it connects ok, but i need to turn wifi off first if i need to reboot otherwise i get the same issue, wifi won't turn on.
sorry for the long post, and forgive me if i missed an already existing thread. thanks for reading. any help is greatly appreciated.
well what rom are you using
I had the same problem with certain ROMs. Sometimes it would even say instead of switching back to off it would just say error. I used Dark Raider for Vivid and had that problem. I did everything and gave up. I downgraded my vivid to GB and rooted it. WiFi is an essential to me so I have to stay where I can switch it on. I hope there's a fix for this soon.

that's what i've encountered with ics, on gb, if i forget to turn wifi off before rebooting, my wifi will just say error. so i end up having to master reset too.
thanks for the reply.
when you flash a rom, are you restoring a backup in titanium or something?
i have never had this problem and i have tried every rom on xda and rootzwiki
I've had this happen too. I've fixed it by using fastboot and flashing the boot.img from the ROM or Kernel update that I had last installed. My phone is s-on so I have to do that everytime I apply a ROM or am update that has a boot.img in it.

i tried doing that as well, my phone is S-OFF.
It was really frustrating for a while. It was the exact symptom you have described. I kept trying by flashing the kernel with fastboot, then flashing the ROM, and then flashing the kernel again with fastboot. It seemed that whenever I changed something, I had to use that sequence to get it to work again.

i think i will try this method. i'll try with the previous roms i've posted first. i'll post my results later today.
Update
Wifi still no go using ICS. Is there a recommended radio version when using ICS ROMS?
Any stock GB Rom version wifi is ok. Using Bulletproof 1.1 works fine as well. Tried v0.9b WildchildICe and update4 of unofficial cm9 and still no wifi. Gonna stick with WildChildIce rom for now and try different Radio combinations.

U got the problem solved? I have exactly the same issue each damned time
When you flash, try mounting system and data in recovery prior to the flash. There used to be an error where wifi would hang as described if those were not mounted upon flashing. Couldn't hurt to try.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement

Try this. Go HERE. Go down to the 3rd post. Look for GanOptimizer & follow the instructions. No promises but sometimes that will lock it on in ICS.

[Q] wifi issue on JB roms

Greetings guys. I'll skip the bs and tell you what my problem is. I just rooted 2.20 like everyone else and everything has been mostly fine but when I flash any JB ROM my WiFi doesn't work. I've tried flashing different stock ROMs in which the WiFi does work then wiping from recovery and reflashing jb but no dice. I've also tried fixing permissions and every other solution I've found via search.
Making a thread is a last resort as I know you guys are being flooded but any help would be much appreciated.
Try the 10/25 experimental nightlies CM10. Have heard this fixed wifi issues with most people
Any jb Rom? Are you having the same issue on aokp or miui
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app
Does it say error? When I'm on jb I have to try to connect it like fifteen times than it finally does
Sorry about the delayed response. Was posting from work.

Honestly I haven't tried those yet. That was probably gonna be my next step. I was just set on jb because you know, butter.

I don't get any errors. It just doesn't pick up my router. Although when I disable all security on the router it picks it up just fine. A totally unlocked router is out of the question though.

Are you sure you don't have SSID disabled?
try it using WPA/WPA2 security

Yeah. I spent a good long while tinkering with my router and even factory reset it as well as tried every security type, changing ssid, hiding it, the works. My old iPhone picks up the router just fine, as does my laptop. This leads me to believe the problem lies with my phones ROM. I'm gonna try to flash a couple of the ROMs suggested to me once my phone charges.
So Ive flashed the experimental CM nightly released on the 25, MIUI v4, AOSP Nocturnal Dirty Rom 4.1 as well as AOKP JellyBean. Still nothing. Im sure I'm forgetting a couple too.
Don't really know what else I can do at this point. Ive tried different gapps packages too just in case that could be it. I might have to abandon all hope of running project butter right now. :crying:
Damn shame too, I really really like AOKP JB

Are you on 2.20 firmware?
Did you wipe System and Factory Reset, then flash the Boot.img, then the ROM?

Yeah, that's the standard protocol Ive been taking with every ROM I flash, even ones of the same kernal type. Reboot to recovery>Factory reset>flash boot.img for that ROM>reboot to recovery and install.
I did a complete wipe system and everything just now and still nothing.

And while on JB your phone doesn't see the router, or just unable to connect?

It doesn't recognize it at all. Unless I completely disable any kind WPA/WPA 2 security. Back on stock unrooted Sense it would pick it up just fine though.

that sounds like a legit issue, you should probably report that to h8rift in the cm10 thread and see if anyone else has the issue.
out of curiosity what type/brand of router do you have ?
Update: Now running Cleanrom and everything seems to be working properly. I'm gonna stick with it for a little while until I can figure out how to run JB with wifi.

That's a good idea for sure, I'll do that.
My router is a D-Link.

It probably won't help.. But have you tried updating the firmware?
I had an old D-Link and wifi worked fine on JB based ROMs for me.
a WBR-2310A to be exact
I've had the same issue in every aosp ROMs however on my phone i do get the WiFi to work. It takes me a while but I eventually get it. What I do I turn WiFi on and off, leave it off for a minute or so, re start my phone, after phone starts I turn WiFi on and most of the times it does it, you have to have patience

Depending on ROM an kernel, WiFi scan intervals are up to 5 minutes apart.
Just saying.
