Hey, sorry if this has been asked before, but I did do a search and came up with nothing. A buddy of mine was telling me about editing the build prop on his vibrant to increase data speed. I wanted to do it but wanted to get some input first so I don't mess anything up. Does anybody know if this works or if it's even relevant for our phones? I'm running cm7 #124 and faux 4.1

This is the post that I was referrencing:

He says that his data speeds have improved since applying the tweaks. My question is if this will work for any gsm phone. Has anybody tried this or know a little more information? I'm not a noob, I just don't know anything about editing build props. The info that I could find only pertained to the Vibrant, HTC Inspire, & some threads on a Motorola forum.
There are many factors to consider such as coverage in your area. And, what works for some may not work for you.

I'm running Android Revolution ver 3.3 and am debating whether or not to change ROMs yet. My hesitation is the future patch for 4G speeds...
Will the upcoming patch require that users flash a brand-new ROM when AT&T/HTC releases the new patch (assumed to be a ROM) to support 4G?
Or, will this be a radio release for this change? Since they said it is coming out this month (April) I want to ensure that I don't waste time upgrading multiple times over...
the only people who NEED this patch are folks who are not running a rooted ROM with a modified build.prop. In other words very few people here at XDA.
And, how would we check to see which ROM's are and are not running those modified build.prop's? Some ROM's mention it some don't...
Thanks for clarifying this though. I'm glad to know that many are already running the modified file. Hopefully I won't have to worry on it for my or my wife's phone!

run a speed test. if your upload goes faster than 200kbs you're good to go.
Also, the "patch" is for HSUPA, not 4g

You may also want to look into the thread I have linked below. It goes into detail on the data speed related build.prop settings. It is pretty simple to edit them yourself as long as you are rooted. Just use Root Tools and in the build.prop editor find (or add if needed) the values you want to change, edit them and save.
Editing build.prop for faster data speeds.
Personally I am using these settings and seem to only be limited by the network itself. As far as I'm concerned, I'm 4G ready, still waiting on ATT though..

I tried to post this as a reply under the dev's post, but unable to. Anyway...I just flashed this ROM but I'm having some issues, so I'm looking for some assistance.

Anyone else experience these issues or know of a fix? Thanks for your help!

Well, for one thing, that rom is obsolete.
This one is essentially the same thing, but more current:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1057060
You should move to that one. I'm running it as I type this.
Make sure you flash it according to gtg's instructions, and that will help eliminate unknown weirdness happening.
You may need to flash the RIL that corresponds to your current radio, as the one included in the rom is for the 04.14 gingerbread radio, I believe. This is easily accomplished by way of gtg's RIL flasher, also available under his section in rom manager.

Thank you...new to this. I traded for this phone only to find out later that it was rooted. So now I'm experimenting with it a little. Mostly want it to be faster, improve battery life and the reception somehow. If you have any other recommendations let me know. I just searched the free ROM's on CM.

Mine's always shown HSDPA. I assumed it was my area, but it might be something else.
Read through the inspired ace thread and see if others have had the problem. Usually when I don't see other people mentioning a particular issue, I tend to think it's something with my personal set-up.
I don't have any experience with radios, apn's, the build.prop file yet, I'm still absorbing all the info surrounding these subjects, but I've been suspecting something isn't quite right in those areas, in my set-up.
You may want to do some similar exploration.
As far as the Google search bar, if you're talking about the widget that's on the stock home screen, it still exists in this rom, you just have to go to widgets and re-add it.

I've read the entire thread on this ROM, nothing covers it so I started a new thread....we'll see what I get back. No way for me to email the dev since I'm new to the site.
I read about all you guys downloading 2, 3, 4, and 5mbps. I average 1.5mbps
downloads (lets not even talk about upload speeds). The only way I see yall numbers if I am on wifi. I am in south La below New Orleans near the Gulf. I know I am not in the 4G area (yes we have 3G) but seems I should be getting better. Things I have tried and done. With all this changes and with stock phone/ROM my speeds have not changed. I am using the speedtest app for testing. I have tried different times and places etc...
Check with ATT and I am on the 4G plan
On the Gingerbeast ROM (have not tried any others)
Tried the Gingerbeast radio and ril
Tried the recommended ATT radio .06.06.30_M with recommended ril 2.2.0079HM
Tried the recommended ril for the ROSP ROM HTC-RIL 2.2.0018G with the ATT .06.06.30_M (currently running)
Also configure the APN for the recommended ATT phones (tweak the APN and added MediaNet
Well my speeds have not changes (if they did it is very minimal)
Just looking for any wisdom or suggestions as to what to try next. Maybe this is the best we can get down here also.....I dont know anyone that owns a Inspire to compare it to down here.
thanks
Call ATT and see if they're having tower issues in your area. They may be severely degraded.

If you can flash a ROM, radio and edit APN setting you can edit your build.prop. It's really easy to do with RootExplorer

Don't be intimidated because it looks all codey. Just make a backup and go for it, it's the best/fastest/easiest way to learn.
I'm running the latest honeysense on my inspire. I was reading about flashing different radios and changing the clock speed. What are the benefits from these modifications and where can i find a good guide on how to do it?

Well, there's a lot of info regarding over/underclocking. Searching will provide you with probably more than you'll know what to do with.
As applies to the ROM you're running, the best and most relevant discussion would likely be in the honeysense ROM thread itself.
I know browsing through pages of posts doesn't sound appealing, but it really is a good idea when it comes to this stuff, to get a feel for what others have been doing in this area with that particular ROM.
Now, as far as radios, often times there'll be a radio recommended for a rom, that recommendation could be the result of any number of things.
The stock OTA radio often ends up working the most reliably across a lot of roms. If you're not experiencing any issues with signal quality/data speeds, there really isn't any need to mess with it.
Even after flashing a new ROM, if performance in these areas seems to be degraded compared to your previous ROM, this can often times be addressed by making sure the RIL of the ROM is matched with your radio.
RILs change with each new ROM flash, radios do not. So a mismatch is a common occurrence and can cause radio performance issues, yet is easily remedied by flashing the appropriate RIL.
The inspire only radio thread has all the radio/rils/recommendations/instructions you need...over in the dev section.

RE: Overclocking the CPU
I think this is about the most elegant solution....I'm a CPU guy...so maybe overly weird I do not want some "App" running my over/underclock...This works...and 52 steps should be enough to figure out what works for you in conjunction with something like Llama to toggle the other stuff...JMHO....It is available on a few ROM's now i believe....run adb command though n actually see what clock steps are available: for some reason my cpu is missing a common speed step :-o. . bad qualcom bad

As some of you have come from the captivate know what I did there with Rom Q&A threads. I am doing the same here. In an effort to clean up the site. All Rom related question shall from now on be posted in the proper Q&A or will be deleted on sight.
I feel like I'm posting incorrectly here but this thread says CM Q&A so if i am I sincerely apologize but here goes nothing...
I'm running Cyanogenmod 7 RC1. Before i installed CM7 i did a wipe of data and cache.
The google navigation app works for about 2 or 3 minutes then loses gps signal. I have to exit navigation then bring it up again and it will immediately get a gps fix then disconnect after another 2-3 minutes. I have really searched around for a fix and i'm not even sure which one to try.
Below are the threads that i have found that may fix the issue. I don't believe they will since the problem isn't getting a fix which it does. It it just losing the fix after a brief period of time.
If i use MapQuest it works flawlessly. It just really bothers me that i can't get a stock app to work...
Which one is the most viable? If non of the threads below will help can you politely point me in the right direction?

When that occurs to me, pulling down the notification toggles and toggling the gps off then on fixed the issue. the gps stays locked for the rest of the trip

This is how it works for me as well. Just toggle GPS off and back on while still in the navigation app. Should come back up and stay on from that point on.
Thanks for your responses guys...I wish there was another way rather than that. I guess it's a small inconvenience for what is my favorite rom.

I definitely liked this rom but for some reason it seemed to drain my battery more than other roms. Not sure what it was but I will try it out again when they update it

I believe that isn't supported in CM7 but i'm not sure. That seemed to be in the sense based roms if I understand what you're asking

There is a way to quick search the phonebook with the stock CM7 dialer, but there's an extra keystroke involved. While the dialer is up on the screen, just press the search button on the bottom right of your phone. Then you can quick search through your contacts.

I had a issue with mytracks and GPS. It seemed to cut out frequently and when the trip was done it logged me as going almost twice as far due to zig zagging in my track.
Very low data speeds in CM7, what gives?
I'm new to android and to rooting. I understand that CM7 does not support 4G, but I'm not even seeing 3G speeds when I have it installed. My speed test results are averaging in the 0.4 - 0.5 mbps range down, and similar or some times better up.
On ANY other rom I see better speeds. I'd be ok with similar speeds to what I saw on my Iphone 3g, but when I tether right now on CM7 it makes me long for the good ole days of dial up. Seriously, I frequently see sub 56kbps speeds.
I WANT to use CM7. I love all the tweaks and features, but the data is so slow! Any suggestions to how I could fix this and get back to my 1.5 mbps 3G speeds?
Radio: 26.06.06.30
RIL: HTC-RIL 2.2.0018G
Kernel (What ever came with the phone? Ive not changed kernels that I'm aware of)
Thanks,
Tom

Did you make sure the APN's are correct? There is a APN thread in the dev forum.. If you are in 4g area you should see faster speeds than 1.5Mb.. Iam in dallas and see 3.5Mb down 1.1Mb up.. Either way, make sure the APN settings are correct.
By chance has anyone's phone gotten laggy at random or where it'll temporarily hang/freeze in the later builds?

Something this severe hasn't happened to me yet. I might see a little sluggishness from time to time, but it doesn't cause the phone to hang or freeze.

+1 on one7dchevy's suggestion. CM7 works with HSPA+ / 4G just as well as any other ROM (I've seen speeds up to 6-7Mb/s), as long as you've got the right APN config. Link to the APN thread is in my sig - be careful though, the OP of that thread is a real jerk.
BTW the radio version you're using is just fine - and the RIL that comes with CM7 works fine with that radio.
Posted this question over in the CM forums but they seem to get alot less traffic than here. Figured I'd give it a shot.
Flashed this device a while back. Now it's randomly losing GSM signal, wifi is fine. When I attempt to scan for a network provider it just errors out.
It's a AT&T device, Inspire 4g
It's running: 7.0.3-DesireHD
baseband: 12.39.60.19P_26.06.04.06_M
RIL: HTC-RIL 2.2.0099HM (Jan 27 2011, 16:12:49)
Having to swap to and from airplane mode every few hours to maintain signal is getting old. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as this is my daily handset and I'm missing way to many calls. I've confirmed with my gf's captivate that it's not random network outages.
I even rolled back to an old nandroid backup where this didn't happen and it continues to happen.
