I walked into Best Buy last week with every intention of buying a Xoom Tablet, but while I was sitting there, I started playing with the Acer Iconia TAB A500 and ended up getting it because it was cheaper. I've been playing with it for the last week and have been somewhat disappointed in some of it's downfalls. The GPS is probably the worst I've ever seen, for some reason doesn't like to play half of my music, Acer support is, for the most part, non-existent, and I've yet to be able to find a very protective case for it, and as a Paramedic student, this thing is traveling all over with me.
So my question is as follows: Are there any ground breaking differences between the Xoom and the A500?
I've read just about every comparison article written, but I'd figure that I'd come here and ask the people that use the Xoom the most.
Edit: I'm talking about the wifi only versions.
Your comparing the two worst 3.1 tablets on the market. Go with Samsung 10.1 or better yet, Asus transformer.

The US Xoom is a Google Experience Device which means you're always going to get OS updates first. The Xoom is also the ONLY tablet that supports 802.11 a/b/g/n that means you can operate on 2.4ghz wifi or 5ghz wifi. The Xoom is built stronger in my opinion.
The samsung is very pretty but after reading about how users are able to just flex them in their hands with little to no effort and reading reports of the glass popping out of the tablet... yeah no thanks. To say that comparing the Acer and the Xoom is comparing the worst two units on the market is short sighted and ignorant at worst.
I'd definately want the Xoom over any other tablet released to date.
So how's the playback & GPS on the Xoom? I'm been having difficulty with a lot of my 1080p videos on the A500, and the gps can't get a lock to save it's own life. I've updated the A500 to 3.1 and while the 1080p video playback has improved (it's not as choppy), the GPS is a worse as ever!
The GPS works like a charm. I've used it as a giant Garmin a few times. As for the video. I haven't tried anything in HD, but flash video can be a little jumpy. Most videos below 1080p are butter, but like I said, you can get the occasional jumpiness in flash videos.

Your kidding right? The xoom is far better then the galaxy tab, its plastic low Res crappiness. If you don't like the xoom gtfo of our forum. You dumbasses who are just here to talk **** are getting annoying. I'm assuming you own all four tablets and have thouroughly tested their pros and cons right?
The xoom is a very solid, well spec'd well supported piece of hardware.
Oh by the way how are you liking 3.2 on your gtab? Its beautiful on my xoom. Wait Samsung hasn't pushed that update yet? Sorry

Yea. GPS status n tools works well enough to accurately read car speed on my xoom, accurately lol.
The xoom is also pure google, which means its like the nexus line of phones.... you get the latest updates faster, the now 2 year old nexus is still more up to date then most phones you can buy today. So, ice cream sandwich and beyond is all but promised for the xoom. People have different opinions, but I'm enjoying 3.2 right now, before any other tablet. Like the galaxy tab 10.1 for example.

There is no reason to answer like that. I have a galaxy tab and probably I will return it today for a xoom or a refund because of the newton rings problem on the display. But I can guarantee that the galaxy tab display is far superior to any other display actually on the market. Why you say low res? It has the same resolution of the xoom 1280x800. It uses an EPS display and it's much better on brightness and contrast than the xoom one. You shouldn't over react like that providing wrong information just because you like your xoom so much.

i believe he reacted like that because there are a lot of guys coming into this forum to talk crap..... when all is said and done, all these tabs have pretty much the same specs. The 10.1 has no ports or SD but a nicer screen. The iconia is bigger and heavier, but cheaper and has a full sized USB. And the transformer has a nice screen but no USB without the dock. Its all about what's important to the person buying the device. I returned my iconia for the xoom and haven't looked back, and yes I tried the transformer for a few days too. It was nice but having to attach the dock to hook up USB devices was a pain in my opinion. I bought a tab so I didn't need a keyboard and mouse.

Honestly if I lived outside the US and had wifi only I'd just flash the US images and be done with it.
I was actually suggesting the transformer over the gt any day..I was not trying to say don't get it but I just found it odd the compare was zoom vs Acer when two knew tabs are on the market. I own the ts and am seriously considering the zoom..the snapdragon is the killer for me for.

Well I went and returned the Iconia today and picked up a Xoom. It feels like its better built and more solid, and the GPS receiver is rock solid, which was a deal breaker for me. The folks at best buy were shocked that I was returning it for the Xoom, as they all thought that the Acer was the better tab. I feel much happier with the Xoom, its doing everything that I need it to and more!

GPS is one of the biggest reasons I chose the Xoom. The wifi version has a TRUE GPS chip onboard.
It's not assisted (rofl) gps, nor cellular triangulation, but a real gps chip and you don't have to buy the 3G version (cough icrap cough) to get it either.

Its not that. Its like this, I'm a loyal HTC customer, and not a big fan of samsungs phones. But do I go post in the captivate forum talking crap about a product I don't own, when someone needs help with a valid question? No. That's rude and counterproductive

I chose the xoom because I like the nice solid feel, I hate UI overlays and know how google beautifully supports devices they use to launch a new version of android. Also, I purchased mine before there was any competition, Ive played with a few other tabs, the galaxy felt flimsy, the transformer was about equal to my xoom IMO, and the Acer felt.... awkward I guess

Asus Transformer? Are you kidding?
I am on my second TF. There are some major manufacturing issues with this device. The screen bleeds light from around the edges, the battery drain on their dock, speaker issues, Flash 10.3 at 6 frames/sec, etc. IMHO, the TF is not a good device at all. The 32GB TF was $499, the dock was $149. I had to return the device once and the new one, well, it is OK but no better. I think the Asus TF is sexy but overpriced. I got my Xoom for $499 and it just has a better feel and operates better. Once I get my 3.2 OTA update to have a MicroSD, the Xoom will probably be my favorite.
I did and I'm happy I did it.
I just got 3.2 last night. There's not really much use for the SD card. Or, I haven't figured it out, and ive spent alot of time trying, and the only way I can even see files on it was a file manager, but its already partitioned for my evo. So I think I may need to find a new one and try it.
3.2 is even faster and less battery draining, less force closes across all aps, and the portrait home/app screen is now lag free for me. The keyboard feels improved and auto correct and predict seem more intelligent. Zooming apps is nice. Browser is snappier along with most all data using apps. Maybe some updating on that end?

Hi all
Just after a few opinions on which tablet to buy.
I am looking at the TF300T, TF201 and the Acer A510. Anyone got any opinions on which one is best value for money?
I was drawn to the prime originally but the GPS and wifi issues put me off. I then got drawn to the cheaper transformer pad but have been reading that the Acer A510 is a better performer and has better battery life (for the tablet to tablet comparison anyway).
Can't make my mind up!
I am also wandering if its worth waiting a couple of weeks to see what is announced at Google I/O, nexus tablet maybe?
I would definitely wait and see what the Nexus Tab's specs and price are, but even if they are nice they won't compare to either of the tablets you're considering. Also IMO the TF300 is better in almost every way once you add the dock, most likely the battery comparisons you've heard have been just the TF300 v.s the Acer A510 but that doesn't factor in the TF300's keyboard dock battery. With the battery it slaughters the A510, and you wont find a productivity option this good anywhere else. Also having the dock add not only a battery and physical keyboard but it adds a full-size SD card slot and a full-size USB 2.0. I may be a bit biased but as long as you are planning on buying the keyboard dock with the TF300 its a no-brainer.
I would recommend the TF300 if you need a tablet soon. If not and you can afford it you might want to wait for the TF700. At one point I considered the Acer A510 also until I heard about the heat issues. I currently have 2 TF300's, one perfect 32gb, and a 16gb currently at Asus being repaired. And for my smaller tablet I have a Galaxy Tab 7.7. As far as 10" tablets currently available the TF300 is the way to go IMO.

In the UK you cant get the TF300 without the dock, at least not from a shop anyway!! You can import one or use a shady online e-tailer.
My problem is that I am getting fed-up of waiting. I have been lusting over an android tablet for months.
I think I may well have to wait and see what the nexus tablet is. i'm probably not interested if it is only a 7" version. Really want a 10" tablet myself.
I have a nexus S for my phone and definitely prefer the stock android experience and the very active development scene that goes with the Nexus line of devices.
May still end up giving in and buying a TF300 though!

believe me, the TF300's Stock OS is as close to stock android as I've seen on a tablet for awhile, and if you're worried about it becoming outdated, this thing has top of the line specs and will last you for a good long while.
problem for you and me is there is always a better tablet coming in six months.. I bought the TF300 and like it so far. I love having the dock because I use pocket cloud remote desktop alot.
Unfortunalty I know I want a windows tablet when they become available and will prolly buy one too.. If you can wait then prolly when the one comes out you want now there will be a release for a new one and you will tell yourself, should I wait for THAT one?
Get the TF300 its nice.. If i wasnt using a dock though i would do the ipad. I like the screen format better for tablet use..
Just got home from work to find a check from the tax man for £430 so guess I'm gonna spend it on the TF300T then! Thanks everyone for your opinions.

You can't go wrong with the tf300, I just got mine last week and I love it. My brother has the tf101 and the 300 blows it out of the water. My wife has the 7in galaxy tab 2 and it is a great tablet,some of the best speakers of any tablet I've seen, but I like the larger screen. Before I made the plunge to a larger tablet, I had a nook tablet that I heavily modified and put ics on it, a great affordable beginners device.
The 300 is such an awesome device, my only complaint is that I didn't get one sooner.

No one can solve this dilemma but you. It's comparing apples to pears: the screen's resolution is different, the underlying hardware is to a large extent different, the available storage solutions are different, the charging keyboard dock (which I find great) is obviously a definite plus.
Resolution is one area where these two are comparable due to pixel density. Both are at the top of their respective size classes and will have very crisp, clear text. The Nexus 7 is pretty much a mini infinity minus the dock, hdmi and sd.
But the problem is you don't seem to know what you want. If your interest in the infinity is based on it being the 'it' tab, not on any particular feature, it probably isn't a good buy. Think about what you want to do with a tablet, and think about which tablet meets those criteria.
PS Asus is a massive company, perfectly capable of juggling many different product lines.

I just ordered a TF700T about an hour ago on Newegg, it's shipping out tomorrow, should have it in 2 days.
They seem to be out of stock again though. Glad I was able to grab one because of Newegg's notifications!
damn bro im in the same situation especially with the asus hybrid tablet ultra books coming out later with windows 8 and dual booting into android. but i need a tablet now and especially in the fall for school. but for 199$ the nexus is so temping damn
Had the same issue myself and could not decide until i really thought about what i needed it for....just like the person said in a couple of posts above.
Since i really want it for business first (I'm in sales) i realized i really needed the bigger screen and the ability too add removable storage.
i went to my local TMobile store and checked out both screen sizes in other tablets and it seemed that the 7" was a little too small for me.
While, i don't need a camera (since i have one on my phone) it is nice that will be able to take photos of documents and sales orders and email them directly from the tablet.
So I agree, think about what your needs are, and go somewhere to check out the sizes if you are not sure.
However....that said, i bought my wife one instead of an Amazon kindle, and it shipped already, and i ordered it after my 700

Only problem with the tf700 is the res is higher and the tegra 3 isn't powerful enough to run games as well at 1200p.... I'm waiting for a new cpu/gpu b4 I upgrade.... This TF300T is blazing fast and I'm running 4.1.1 with no problems.

All the reviews out there say otherwise. There's a reason they went with a faster version of the Tegra 3.
When Jelly Bean arrives, the screen will be the last of the issues we will be concerned about. Asus just released both devices but you can be sure we will likely see jelly bean in the not so distant future seeing how long they likely had the source code

Asus never announced a tablet that dual-boots into Android. It was a full size All in One desktop computer, that thing could never be carried around as a tablet it's three times the size of the largest Android tablet...

We will see Jelly Bean from someone soon. I think the CyanogenMod team might start developing CM10 for the Infinity, they just sent out a preview build of mostly everything running on the TF101 and TF201.
There were rumors before Jelly Bean came out that JB itself would be equipped (maybe parallels-esque) to dual boot windows for those manufacturers who wanted to put both on a system. Didn't pan out, though back then we though JB = 5.0. Maybe the real 5.0 will come ready to dual boot. But a number of Asus windows systems licensed bluestacks for android app emulation, perhaps that was what he was thinking of.
I am thinking about picking up a Nexus 7 for my son so he wont want to play games on my infinity. I still go back and forth between a 7 or a 10 inch tablet. Not being able to expand the memory on the Nexus 7 I think is a deal breaker for me.

I believe that each tablet has different use cases. The Infinity allows for a little more productivity with the keyboard attachment as well as a incredible screen for viewing HD movies. The Nexus 7 lends itself to portability, reading (love reading Pocket on my Kindle Fire), and streaming content. To me the Infinity is better for me as I want productivity and all day battery life when I'm at school and/or work and the screen is going to be great for watching video on it.

i own both nex7 and infinity they are both great, i use infinity for all my tegra 3 games since it has a much better screen imo and faster gpu, plus has longer battery life with the dock, but on the other hand i take my nex7 everywhere because of the size and with the tab talk app i rarely pull out my gnex i just do it all on the nex7, so i would say infinity if your at home alot or sitting at a desk often and the nex7 if your always on the go and need portability.

Never got the OG Transformer but I had keyboard envy, lol!
I love my Infinity. It's the only possible replacement for my dearly beloved but aging Xoom.
I have had the TF101 AND TF201 and now I have the TF700T. Its the best unit of all of the Transformers tablets and very close to the iPad3 as far as what I ask of both of these tablets to do. I am also sure after the TF700T get the Jelly Bean upgrade that it will make the TF700T better than the iPad3, so much so I will be most likely putting my iPad3 on the eBay block. IMHO get the upgrade to the TF700T.

ilostmypistons: All Android devices are a smooth, and fun experience once you root them and get a custom rom on them. I am waiting out for the developing to begin. I owned the OG iPad, lamented the purchase afterwards, sold it, proceeded to purchase the OG Transformer, have not looked back at another tab since, followed ASUS. In my personal opinion as an Infinity owner, and previous OG/Prime owner, and it is only personal opinion certainly. ASUS defines the Android tablet experience, even if the devices have flaws at production. All devices have flaws, my Gnex has flaws, but while Samsung defines the premium Android phone experience, ASUS defines the tablet experience. Galaxy Tabs are nice, though they ultimately feel too 'phon(ish)' to me. I suppose if you are looking for a slightly limited device, with a highly diluted version of Android...tab away, to each their own, though ASUS defines it to me. The UI is not too heavily skinned, the Android is relatively pure (no less pure then a standard CM custom build) the hardware is intense, and I have used each of my tabs as a standard laptop replacement for about 97% of my online experience.
PS: Oh, and I have YET -knock on wood- to experience any of the defects people are mentioning in these forums, on my infinity, and the Prime defects, certainly not present. I have a C7 model, so relatively recent

Had the tf101, have a tf700 now. Android feels pretty much the same as on the tf101 (same lag spikes when dragging the menu etc.), of course the performance in apps is better, the screen is better etc.
But one thing is bad: On the tf101 the release of the pad from the keydock was really easy. Snap and it´s off. On the tf700 i need some force to release it, it feels almost sticky. And yes, that was from day 1.

Bought the TF300, returned it for the TF700. Returned the TF700 as well. Android just isn't good on tablets - it's all lag city on every one of them. The Asus (or Tegra based) are the worst - more apps crash than normal.
On the Infinity I love the 1920x1200 HD screen. Makes for watching movies, reading and streaming so much more exciting and playing games are visually improved from your standard displays . Love the Super IPS+ , I can take it outside on a nice day and still be productive. The Camera is top notch on the Infinity! The best I've seen for a tablet device. Love the tablet Keyboard dock form factor with added battery life and more memory it has pretty much replaced my laptop. It can handle NTSF for the options of larger portable hard drives, that Windows consumer will love. Love the elegance look. I cant wait for Jelly Bean to hit. Fast updates is also very nice. It has its own issues just like any other tablet out in the market fortunately Asus has the quickest updates I've ever experienced. More then likely Infinity will get JB before Sammy.
So its really up to your needs. I love the Stylus on the Note. I'm an artist and would be nice to have something like that around when needed. Also the multitasking features of the Note is cool to! Infinity can do it as well but you will have to go to the Playstore and search for floating apps like Stickit or Overscreen. Although its hard to pry me away from all the features that I love about the Infinity. Both devices are powerful and fast. Maybe I'll just go buy the Note as well for my drawing needs....

I also have ordered one of these to replace my Xoom it should arrive some time this week. I thought about the galaxy note 10.1 but finally ended up ordering the 64gb version.

Note has pen input
Samsung = high quality
open source, lots of custom roms
Odin = awesome
less expensive
overall very, very good tablet.
If you need a keyborad theres always bluetooth keyboards and i THOUGHT i saw a keyboard type dock tho not as awesome as the transformer's
Personally tho, i prefer the 700, i like that its thinner than the galaxy tab or note, i like the full sized keyboard dock with USB and SD slots, i like how its taken everything i throw at it and asked for more. I also love the extra battery life in the dock.
If you want the keyboard, go Asus. If your not going to use it that much, go Samsung.
I owned the tf 101 and the prime and now own the infinity. I think its awesome especially compared to the prime. I'm so glad best buy exchanged mine. I love the infinity. It's everything the prime should have been. I have zero issues with my infinity as well

I've just started Law school and it's going to be the first year where all books are going to be fully digital in PDF.
I'm stuck between the 700 and the Nexus 7. I already have a VAIO Z, so don't really need a laptop.
My first choice is obviously the 700, but here in Europe they only seem to sell the 64gb version with the keyboard....about 670 to 725 euros which is really expensive. Besides, after buying many high-end devices you quickly learn that in a few months its going to loose its value, so buying something cheaper or midrange is sometimes best.
The device will mainly be used for PDF reading surfing, forums, facebook and twitter. Any advice?

Not only is comparing a Nexus 7 with a TF700 like comparing a bicycle to a tank, but trying to determine what *you* would prefer is simply impossible.
If you have access to the devices at a local retailer, I'd highly suggest you go there and look at the devices yourself. If not, just read up as much as you can about the two and make a decision. But again, nobody can tell you what's best for you...

why spend $500 just to do those things? Most of that can done on a phone like the Note.

To be honest, I don't prefer to 7 inch device for massive pdf reading. The screen is just too small and you soon find it is painful even though nexus has a 200+ ppi.
I would pick tf700 due to its large screen and high ppi.
But it seems it is expensive in Europe, and so may be you can buy a new ipad instead?
Also, note 10.1 is another option.
By the way, I think new ipad should have a better reading experience on reading due to its 4:3 ratio.
Owning both I can tell you having to read for extended periods of time I choose my tf700 simply because its a bigger screen. Hardware wise they are similar but tf700 is a little better performance and its screen is unbeatable. Nexus 7 is easy to travel with and one thing some people don't think of is it is easier to charge on the go since it charges off USB. Also nexus 7 has jellybean now which is so much smoother than ICS but the tf700 will get it eventually.

I disagree. The Nexus 7 actually works as a tablet should. I have a Nexus 7 for my wife, and just bought a TF700 last Saturday (C7 serial) right before I left on a cruise, and stopped using it after 2 days. Constant freeze ups, and keyboard is intermittantly nonresponsive and bad light bleed (I made sure I had .26 firmware). Got to the point where I couldn't change pages in any of the multiple ebook readers I installed as sometimes the creen would regidter the gestures and sometimes not. The hardware may be the similar, but the Nexus is matched to the JB OS(Google made sure of it) and is zippy, especially because of the smaller screen. I want to hold out for JB for the TF700 but I can't see it resolving these issues - It should work out of the box.

I was in a similar situation like you, I use a lot of PDF's and are very e-mail dependent. I tried the Nexus, but it felt to small tbh. I allready own several laptops and tablet hybrids like the Lenovo x220T but since I got my TF700T i feel there's very little need for them in my day-to-day. Most of my reading is done on my TF700. I was afraid that it would be more than i needed at first with the big screen, support for full HD, gaming etc. But really, now it's my most used gadget and I use it both for work and most of the evenings when at home to.
right now the streaming of 1080p movies from my server almost keeps me to distracted from work..
I say go for the TF700 and get the keyboard dock to while youre at it. It's like the mini laptop you never knew you needed but you just can't be without after a while.
I live in France, I got my 32gB version with dock for 600e tax included, you can easily find the 32gb version in Europe.

I agree, every tablet should work out of the box. Every tablet should work, period. It sounds like your wife got a good Nexus 7 and you got a bum Infinity. The Nexus 7 is nice if you want an ereader that's snappy or if you love to flash roms and kernels. Otherwise, it's kind of a toy. Its limited, non-expandable storage and 7 inch screen are both a blessing and a curse. My 15 year-old daughter has commandeered mine and I'm going through crackflasher withdrawl, but otherwise, I don't miss it. An Infinity that has decent hardware, on the otherhand, will just keep getting better and better as more custom roms and eventually, kernels are available. that's the beauty of this device...there's so much to work with, especially if you get the dock as well.

Well it seems that most of the flaws are something which can't be fixed by any magical custom roms or jelly beans. So pissed that my store had only 7 days return policy. Now the unit is in repair..lool. Used it for 2 weeks and now 2 weeks already in repair.

What flaws are you speaking of? It seems that the Zeus V4 custom ROM *does* solve most of the performance issues, so I'm curious as to what flaws can't be fixed via custom ROM?
Obviously the Asus QC issue can't be solved with a custom ROM, but that's a whole different issue!

I would get the nexus 7 and with the extra cash get a ipad . The nexus is a perfect device for on the go stuff . IMO the nexus is hands down the best android tablet out! Its going to get updates first , its silky smooth and it handles everything you throw at it . And it never hurts to have a ipad .

Oops didn't mean to thank you . But if your going to spend a butt load of money on a device don't you want know its going work right out of the box . I love android but we all know the tablet side is not very good . With the nexus your getting IMO the best android tablet at a really low cost . And the ipad is still the king of tablets . I would never buy a iPhone but I have to be real about the ipad its the best out .
