[Q] Worth buying now?

Is it worth buying now or just wait for Xoom 2 or I should buy Galaxy Tab 10.1?
I have iPad 1 ,but I don't like it ,it not very productivity just game. I am now considering buying an Android Tablet.
Should I buy Xoom or Galaxy Tab 10.1? I also like to flash new ROM. Which one have more custom ROM?

Good question. My two cents...
Presumably, Google will release the source code for Honeycomb sometime soon after the release of Icecream Sandwich. It's also a (I believe widely accepted) presumption that a new model Xoom will be released soon, especially with the Christmas season approaching.
Not that Google and Motorola should really ever be expected to have their **** together enough to coordinate this correctly, from a marketing stand point it makes the most sense. It would make sense that the new Xoom would have the new OS in it.
However, two great things will happen if that's all true; three price of the Xoom 1 will drop considerably (it already has dropped pretty far), and new Honeycomb ROMs will be popping up with far better customizable interfaces and capabilities than Icecream Samich!
This is all speculation on my part, and I may be completely ignorant of some key facts, but it's the reason why I have no interest in a new tablet or Icecream Sandwich.
My last experience with this sort of thing was when I was loading my Droid 1. Even though updates were open source (TRUE O.S.), and always highly anticipated, they never really contained anything so mind blowing that I ever felt it was worth jumping to a new custom made ROM that had it.
My advice is to get a Xoom now, or just when the new one hits the market. I'm no expert and would love tosee what other members say.

But then again I wanted a solid tab experience and the Galaxy didnt cut it for me.
Build quality is better on the Xoom IMO - and I was lucky to snag a new one at $449.
A few things that I like about the Xoom:
- Screen quality is great on my unit - even though its an AUO.
- Sound quality is the best of any tablet. Im assuming you are using this device for media consumption and you wont be disappointed with the speaker layout or sound.
- Build quality is top notch. No Flex. Gorilla Glass.
- My unit is Wifi only (I have a tether plan if needed) and the battery life even on Stock ROM and Kernel is fantastic (rooted).
- For business use I like this tablet a lot. I can have clients sign .pdf's with ease and handle Office docs easily with QuickOffice and Repligo (Worth the $20 for a business professional)
There will always be something better because of the push to create with Android. Do yourself a favor and buy this now (if you play with it and like it of course) and if you need to upgrade in a year or so then do so.

I echo those sentiments.

i agree too, i bought mine even after i found out that motorola is preparing a quad core tab for release soon, but if i kept waiting for the latest then i will never end up buying anything, and i understand that every open source tablet with android is supported with updates for 18 months maybe ? i remember i read that somewhere, so motorola and google now as one company will support updates for us till october 2012 so i am pretty sure we will also get ICS

I just put my TP on e-bay. Now my TP had a OC 1.7 dual core with a gig of ram and a great GPU and IMO the best speaker system you could want. Once honeycomb gets put on it it will rock and be one of the best tabs there are right now IMO.
But i still sold it. I need HDMI out, SD card reader and the accessory support. I got a wifi only xoom for 310 shipped on ebay.
So really its up to you lol

I bought my xoom 3g second hand for 275. Loving it. But if price wasn't an issue, I might have gone with a galaxy tab 10.1 because it is a lot lighter which I think is important for a device you are going to be hold up to read a lot. Samsung manufactures excellent screens as well.

Xoom is better imho...you got a fantastic deal. Enjoy it and don't look back.

The XOOM is so lame I would say get an iPad2, there still isn't a better tablet in terms of pure processing power. The productivity apps are more robust than anything on Android. OpenOffice, QuickOffice and the like just fall short for anyone who is serious about getting work done. Android is still too juvenile at this stage. IPS isn't much better but if you're determined to make that mistake, the iPad 2 is the smartest way to do such a dumb thing. It's more expensive than a XOOM but costs less than the ASIA EEE Slate (the Win7 one) or the Lenovo Thinkpad X220. Those are powerful tablet like machines that are great for the enterprise.

I couldn't disagree more. There's nothing juvenile about the Xoom or android. The Xoom is for people who enjoy making the tablet their own. But YMMV.

Sorry man, the iPad is really good at many things and really bad at many things. Most importantly though, the iPad is the dumbest way to do a smart thing (usually, there are exceptions). If you are truly smart, you don't need preschool level hand holding, or ridiculous restrictions, to get things done.
Android is far more likely to be used by smart people than an iPad. Sorry but it's true. This doesn't mean there are no smart people using iPads, it simply means there are more dumb people using iPads than there are dumb people using Xooms(or other Android tablets). I say this because it's simple logistics. If you are dumb and you are looking at tablets, the only guidance you are likely to get is to buy an iPad. Just go into most retail outlets and watch what they push on the inexperienced.
Also, I agree that the best tablets will be the tablets that run a full OS. However, we are at least 10-12 months away from Windows 8. I wouldn't recommend a Windows tablet until Windows 8 is released.
Having said all this, I don't really like to call people dumb. Less experienced is a more appropriate description most of the time. There are, however, some people who really are just dumb.
I have had the iPad, several crappy and cheap Android tablets, The Nook Color, Acer Iconia A500, HP Touchpad, and (as of yesterday) the Motorola Xoom.
I chose the Xoom because I think it will receive the most love from Google in the future. This is for obvious reasons. I also chose the Xoom because it has accessory and dock options, expandable memory slot, and HDMI out without any proprietary adapters. I have just started to mess with this device but I do like the feel of it and it seems to be very well built.
My initial impression, in comparison to the Iconia, is that the performance is much smoother. One of the things about the Iconia was that the stock rom was very laggy at times. I haven't noticed this with the Xoom yet. Also, there isn't any add-on crap on the Xoom either. I prefer mostly stock Android, and the Iconia had a couple (in my opinion stupid) enhancements. This may explain the difference in performance. The only cool thing, I will miss, on the Iconia is the full size USB port.
I look forward to seeing what I can do with this device. It should work well with my SGS II.

Yea..im gonna wait until after Christmas and grab me a Xoom. mainly cause i don't have the money now lol. Or else i'd grab one now. But im happy playing with my Flashed GTab for the moment.
Don't know why i NEED a Xoom. Maybe the sexiness of it. Im not a Flasher. (Mine was already flashed when i got it). So Xoom already having 3.1 and upgradeable over the air right? Should be good enough for me.

Is 370$ good price for the xoom?
I will study in college soon and i am wondering if the xoom will suit me?

It's quite a good price. I think it should suit you fine.

Don't misunderstand. I recommended the iPad 2 for business solely because of the raw power of the cpu and the gpu. When combined with the robustness of the productivity software, it's a smarter choice for business for the money.
This isn't an emotional choice. If I had what I wanted, it would be something as powerful as the A9 processor with that gpu running win8.

What tablet?

I'm looking to get an android tablet and I've narrowed it down to 3. Asus transformer, Acer iconia a500 or Motorola xoom I've chose these 3 as they are fairly cheap and look set to get much cheaper as new tablets come out. The only problem I have is all reviews I read are heavily biased towards an ipad2. I would like some honest opinions from people who have actually used the devices, rooted them installed custom roms and also what apps are like running as I've read apps don't all work at full screen on 10" screens.

The Asus Transformer Prime has the best stats, but I think you're referring to the eeePad Transformer in your list (which IMHO looks like crap from the reviews I've read).
From the 3 you listed, I'd go with the Xoom. But seriously, why not just save for a couple more months and get the Asus Transformer Prime. You'll thank yourself later!

Did look at them and they look nice but its not a matter of saving I just don't want to spend that much on what is really just a toy for me (can't see it replacing my PC). What I'm more concerned with is the report I read that a lot of apps don't scale up to the big screen. Is this true or was it just another apple fanboy slagging of anything non apple.

The whole belief that honeycomb is unfriendly to apps total BS. I have had a Transformer since April and have rooted it and am running Revolver rom and even before i rooted it it was extremely slick. The home screen isn't very good but install ADW EX and you get the best homescreen experience ever. I have over 100 apps on mine and they all work great and look beautiful. You will, of coarse, find some that aren't that great but that happens everywhere.
Now as a transformer owner i can honestly recommend any android tablet to someone ( Who actually knows abut android) and you will enjoy it. I would suggest you get the Prime though because it's much better and you get more for your money. Asus is really great with updates so you shouldn't have to root it for a while
Also also on it being a toy, it can totally replace you destop, you can get the keyboard dock when you want and make it a full on ultrabook

The transformer is my favourite so far in my opinion it looks nice. I love android so its nice to know it runs nice. Thanks for letting me know about the apps it was my main concern. Now which one to chose? Hmmm.....

If you are going for first generation tablets the transformer is the way to go but with CES this week you should wait to see what comes out of there

One thing I forgot to ask if I replace my PC can I still perform adb functions for my phone or do I still need windows.

I also have a OG Transformer, and I like it a lot. It's fast, good looking and the dock is very cool. If you can find it for 300 bucks just buy it.

I have a galaxy tab 10.1 and I really like it. My wife has an ipad2 and here is my take on these things. The galaxy tab is every bit as good as the ipad in many areas. internet browsing, email, etc. Where it falls behind the ipad is the apps.
My wife has Hbogo on her's, but I cant get it on mine. My wife has directv app which can watch some live tv, my same directv app doesn't have this feature. There are some great apps for the android tablets, but not nearly as many as the ipad2. The android apps don't seem to get all the attention as the ipad's.
I still like my tab a lot and I am hoping the apps will catch up.

I've owned a Xoom, Galaxy Tab 10.1, and the original Transformer.
If I had to choose between those three I think I would pick the original Transformer by Asus. Best experience I had out of the box.
Galaxy tab 10.1 was a very close second.
Now it is all about the Transformer Prime for me though. All I have to do is find one for sale.

kidding....but honestly if you can find one for ~$100 it can be quite possibly the best tablet available. Android is quite stable, even though currently its running gingerbread.
But I would wait, like someone said above CES is right around the corner, and who knows, ASUS could be like Sony and drop the price on the prime by $100. But if you are really set on a tablet now, do you really want something that is over a year old.
I would also consider that you take a look at the Tablet S with their recent price drop.

Not kidding.
Seriously, take a look at the forum for them, CM7 is coming along, CM9/ICS is progressing, and webOS is solid. At least consider it. 1.2GHz dual core, 1GB RAM, 10" screen, wireless charging dock available. The TouchPad had sold more units than any android tablet. The iPad is the only tablet that sold more units period. The cheaper than dirt price helped, but all those units out there mean there is a large userbase, and plenty of support.

have been looking round for a tab, while the transformer prime seems best its now almost double the cost of the xoom, even though the xoom is quite old, it seems anything else around is still tegra2 or dual core similar spec hardware to the xoom, so i dont see any point apart from the weight in getting anything newer or more expensive, is it still a good option guys? you can get one for around £260 in the UK where as the transformer prime would be £499 and the original transformer maybe £350
i just returned a scroll extreme as it was just soooooooooooooo laggy!! i dont want anything with huge lag like that again

This late? I wouldn't buy the xoom today at its current price.

So I'm the first to respond...the original Xoom is a wonderful device and is even better now than it was when it was new because it has ICS official update, and best of all, the most fantastic developers and real bleeding-edge advances in Xoom software. It's so well built and sturdy that the bit of additional weight doesn't matter. In my opinion the Xoom is still the best tablet available, as everything works well and there's tons of additional functionality with custom roms.

The xoom is built like a tank and with it's specs what else out there is better for the money. I have two of them and the last one I picked up for $315 U.S.

Picked up 32 gb wifi only xoom a few months back with original box and 5 cases (4 still sealed) for $275 off craigslist. Didn't think it was too bad and I'll be keeping xoom for awhile

I only got my Xoom about 3 weeks ago, £280 from PC world. Been an android guy for a year now so did my research to see what the community support was like. Noticed that we're getting official CM9 support, that made the deal even sweeter. Still team EOS provide excellent support on AOSP builds. Even in terms of specs, great screen, great processor, can be overclocked (and stable). In my opinion this is still a great buy!

So what do you guys suggest?
My requirements are, good support by Dev community and which wont brick easily...

Hi I just picked up a Motorola Xoom WiFi 32GB via a pricerunner.co.uk search. This got me a £5 discount making the delivered price just under £245. I tried to upgrade to ICE/Android 4.0, but managed to “Brick” the device …so be warned and be patient.
Fortunately I manage to resolve this issue with the help of some XDA forum links, YouTube and Motorola site itself. I will try and write up the details of my problem and solution in another thread.
I am now back to the original Android 3.2 version and so far I am very happy the XOOM.

the Xoom has great community support and as far as I know the galaxy tab 10.1 does too because that was another option of mine and community support is a big factor when I buy a new product both I believe are getting official CM9 support. i can't speak for the TF101,I don't know much about that one

I have all three and the best will be the one you can find at the best price. All three are near similar hardware with each having an advantage/disadvantage to the others.
Community/Dev support I would have to say the Xoom wins though...as well as being difficult to brick. Google "Experience" device really makes the Xoom a great device.
(I use the Xoom, my wife is using the Transformer and I gave my mother the Galaxy Tab).

in my opinion, its the best tablet for the cost.
main cons are weight and potentially out of date hardware. that hasn't stopped it from being the first official device to receive 4.0.4
would love if i could get a 2nd one as backup.
HD dock is wonderful. it even works with my otterbox.

Xoom is the best overall tablet. Newer tablets have shinier items, but considering the durability, functionality, support and overall user experience, I don't think you could go wrong buying a xoom.

I do have a Xoom either and I think it's a good choice and you won't regret buying it. It isn't expensive for its quality and it runs very well and smoothly especially with CM9 ICS.

Actually, the Xoom has a better frame rate than the Transformer 101. You could search for the thread that proves it somewhere here in General or Q&A (sometime last summer?).

If you can find one for a good price I think it's a no-brainer. Great build quality and great active devs on XDa. What more could you possibly ask for?

check craigslist in your area, or look on ebay. do your research and you are sure to find a great deal!

I've had Xoom since almost release day. Wifi at start and chose it over the galaxy tab just cause it felt more rugged. Tab was nice but felt cheep. Haven't regretted it one bit. Now I own 2 xooms, wifi and 4g, wifi one my son mainly uses. Got my 3g/4g on Craigslist for 400, came dock, leather case and original box.

based on your guys opinions here and elsewhere, i ordered the xoom and should have it in my hands tomorrow. really excited about this device! i even changed my sig already

I can't try any tablets out, cause they din't release in India still now,nexus 7 might come out next month,,,but might be overpriced here :/
Actually i'm asking my uncle whose in USA to get this for me, and only Asus tablets have international warranty
If nexus 7 comes out with 32 gigs ill get that then.

The newest tablets I can compare for you is this and the GNote 10.1
GNote 10.1 runs faster and the s-pen is great
TF700 is a bit laggier but amazing res and yes, a lot of apps aren't that great for 1080p

Lets ignore the higher than average build quality issues, since you can just pick a place that will let you return many times until you get one without visual hardware flaws. (make sure you do that.. pick a place with a good return policy)
I am seriously disappointed in this tablet. (it's my second one) It's really slow and really choppy. I would NOT spend my own money on this device. But that's your decision to make. I shouldn't have to unlock and void my warranty to make my tablet work at an "almost" acceptable level. Running Cleanrom 1.0 makes the tablet way better, but still nowhere near the level an expensive device should be at. I'll try Cleanrom 2.1 tonight.
When I say really slow and choppy, this isn't even with games or items that really tax the resources. This is while using things like Pulse reader.. or pretty much anything that has to scroll or requires multiple touch actions in a row. like open email, scroll to bottom to check something, and press delete all in pretty quick succession. You have to pretty much pause between each screen touch so the tablet can keep up or you get "Application Not Responding". This is likely related to the poor I/O. I helped out a previous employer and was given this tablet as a gift.. I keep it because depending on how you look at it, it wasn't really my hard earned cash that paid for it. I'm sure there are many people out there who love their tablet... But compared to my much older and much lower spec Acer A500 this thing sucks. If you dont NEED the keyboard.. try the Acer A700 instead.
The screen on the TF700 is very nice (the serious light bleed is only really noticeable at start-up). I have had no issues with blurriness or general ugliness. Obviously with the high resolution things must scale and any applications built with low quality graphics will be fuzzy when scaled. This is not an issue with the tablet, but rather with the App developer. Any high res screen will have the same issues until all app devs convert to higher quality graphics.
After dealing with my friends terrible TF201 (prime) and now this TF700 (2 of them).. Which proves ASUS is either not capable of fixing the performance issues, or simply doesn't care. Either way it will take a lot for me to throw any cash toward ASUS in the future.

I would love to get the note 10.1, but sadly it doesnt have a international warranty.. and i makes no sense getting it from India as its around 40,000rs(800$)
So,i'll be getting either T700 or Nexus 7 or yea ipad mini(though am not intrested in apples products).

Honestly, i don't know why so many people say bad things about this tablet. No device is perfect, they all have their flaws... you just have to choose which ones are most important to you. Since I've gotten this tablet I've experienced nothing but good things... apps and games are fine and will only get better. Speed is fine with the browser2ram apk installed... and the look and feel of this thing is just amazing. Don't let all the negative comments here mislead you. I was worried when I bought this tablet then came here to read only negative things, but after taking the leap of faith I have no regrets.

Acer and 2-3 more compaines are coming out with 1080p tabs + htc butterfly which is a 1080p phablet.
So, i assume all these "might" lead to a quality full HD app's?
And does the nexus 7 support OTG

I think it's a good investment. I love the **** out of my Inifnity. Yes, there are some QC issues like light bleed (very little in my case) and screen adhesive issues (again, very little for me) but I still think the price is justified. This is why stores have return policies.The best thing a consumer can do in this case, is to give the company as much feedback as possible. The majority of consumers don't realize how much influence they really have. Even the iPad has issues like these. Granted, Apple customer support is probably a lot more responsive. I still think people should not go into the tablet market, being so young as it is, and expect perfection.

I wouldn't recommend this tablet. I have had it since it launched and I waited too long to return it.I waited for JB to be released on it. It ran ok with ICS but now that it has JB its pretty sluggish and choppy compared to other tablets in the Transformer line that run JB(which was a huge letdown considering the hardware in this thing). And as of now, there nothing optimized for its 1080p screen. This tablet is just a little too far ahead of its time. If i could make any recommendation, I would say wait until the Nexus 10 is released.

Yea nexus 10 will be too late(and probably when it comes out i wont be able to get it, cause next year my uncle might not come down to india).. now i'm looking into nexus 7,ipad mini and ipad 3 :/

That would be the A700...take it from me a former owner.

Hey guys, for Christmas this year I was planning to get my mother a low cost "premium" 10inch Android tablet. She has previously been using a Viewsonic G-Tablet, mostly to just peruse shopping websites. She has been pretty great at navigating it, but the crappy screen, heavy weight, and just plain SSSLLLOOOOOWWWness have me wanting to get her a more name brand and reliable piece of hardware.
So that brings me here. I have been eyeing the TF300 for a while and Best Buy having it on a Black Friday sale is making me close to pulling the trigger. However, just looking over some threads here i'm seeing a few people cursing this tablet to death. So I want to check in with you guys, is this a reliable, low cost, quality option?
Don't forget, all I really need this thing for is solid web browsing, responsiveness, Google+ Hangouts, ease of use, and email.
Looking forward to everyone's input.

Yeah man get it..its been great so far no issues at all..google top 10, 10 inch tablets,its in the top 3 most of the time..(this is simply my opinion from my experience)

Ha, I'll probably get flamed for saying this but... get her an ipad. I love my TF but it's only because I've been rooted and unlocked since day one and have spent a bunch of time trying out new ROMs. Oh, and I run the stock browser with the 'ipad user-agent' because it just works better because people actually care about making sites ipad-friendly.
It seems like not everyone has the same experience with these, so it's hit-or-miss as to which you'll get. If it was me, and my wife wanted a new tablet and I didn't want to have to mess with it every time she complains of issues, I'd go with the ipad.

I'd say only go for it if the keyboard is a major selling point for her. If she can live without the keyboard dock, I'd get her the nexus 10.

I would go for it. Why not?! For what you're mom is going to be using it for is great. She's not going to be entering the Dead Trigger video game playoffs, and she's certainly not going to breach national security with it by hacking into the main frame of the NSA. (She's not going to, right?)
I know if I were to get this as a gift, I'd be saying COOL! Plus I'd be thankful that it wasn't an iPad2. Mom will love ya for it!!

I think that you have 2 solutions:
The first:
You bought an IPAD 1 or 2, cause it's simply efficient for someone who don't need the same need as us.
And the IPAD is 3G & Wifi.
Second:
You buy a TF300, you will unlock (or not), root for her.
I don't know if in US there is a big difference in price between the TF300 and TF700.

I wouldn't get it. its freakin slow unless its rooted with a custom rom. then it rocks!

Not to mention it is killer to pay that "Apple tax" when I know I can go Android (she is also familiar with Android, currently using a Samsung Vibrant as a phone and like I said the Viewsonic) and get a better product for cheaper.
Now the Nexus 10 crossed my mind on announcement, but I think the price makes it slightly TOO premium for my wallet. $350 minimum plus tax and shipping for the Nexus vs $280+Tax and out the door for the Transformer on Black Friday. I'm currently using the Nexus 7 to write this, but she isn't a fan of the smaller form factor.
I'm curious about the poor I/O performance I've seen around here, how exactly is that manifesting in day to day use? Don't forget, she's coming from a Viewsonic G Tablet running a custom Froyo rom (JB too unstable). Surely we're looking at a huge speed increase, even with bad i/o performance? Just website browsing on Dolphin should be speedy right?

If you don't root or anything, stock browser doesn't perform too well. It hangs. Using other browsers helps but I only use chrome really and that's not even that good. Certainly worse than the nexus 7. The I/O issues do get annoying and there is lag in some places. Have you looked at the Note 10.1?

I/o is terrible and affects normal web browsing. if you flash a custom its fixed but on stock it blows. I love mine rooted and custom.
if you flash cm10 stable + custom kernel its freakin fast... otherwise not so much,...

I have a stock tf300 and have no problems browsing using Dolphin. Dolphin is quick enough for me and it never crashes, even with lots of tabs open. Your mother will love it compared with what she has got now.

disagree about stock... my mother and wife has one and stock it frustrated BOTH of them. Flashed CM10 AND UT's kernel and they love it now.
