Hey everyone, I currently have a Samsung vibrant but I'm looking to upgrade. The G2x looks sick and since the galaxy s2 isn't out for tmo yet I'm trying to decide what to get.
Long story short, does development seem to be slowing for this device? I've been watching some of the rom threads for a while now and trigger seems to be abandoned.
Just wondering because I'm addicted to flashing and if the future is bleek for the G2x it'd be nice to know haha.

Just wait for the sgs2. g2x is slowly dwindled away.

I was also waiting for SGS2. But since the model will have 4.5'' screen, I'll rather stay with G2x. 4.5'' is way bigger that what I can handle
I unfortunately just got the g2x and it development is (compared to active forums) non-existent. Seems no one gives a **** or people that like making roms do not own this phone.
Baleme it on nvidia...
I agree, if nVidia would release their proprietary drivers, the devs could get working again.

What exactly do people want from development? We have a few stable ROMs, CM is going forward. Once you achieve stability or relative stability, development does stop. I don't see a point of having 20 different ROMs with only visual differences, like many other phones here with a lot of so-called development do.

Well said. In the past I have flashed my phones so often (dailies on CM6) that I never got to enjoy my phone. Was flashing it every day (sometimes twice a day) and then dealing with bugs and annoyances in the dailies. Some people are addicted to flashing; but who wants to flash constantly to set your phone back up and then flash it again. Plus, eventually you might brick it. On the G2X I just want to enjoy having a speedy phone with little or no problems, that is why the only ROM I have flashed is the GB update and haven't even bothered to root it yet. So far enjoying my phone immensely just using it as intended.

I came from a vibrant too where I was flashing multiple times a week, constantly tweaking to find performance and stability. then when I got my g2x something felt strange.. took a while for me to realize that it was because after weeks of owning the phone all I had done was rooted it. didn't have to flash anything. it took some getting used to but I can say for sure that I wasn't enjoying my vibrant due to the constant messing around. this phone i enjoy because I just get to use it.

Same here. I never find my perfect rom for Vibrant. Too many rom / kernel / modem made me flashing every other day. Every time I wished that the new flash would give be better GPS / Speed / Battery.
Now with G2x I am pretty happy that I have a stable rom with everything I need.
I say wait either for the sgs 2 or the htc 4g amaze.

It may be dwindled, and flashing can be fun sometimes. But mostly I just want a super fast, daily driver with the least amount of bugs. Most of the roms right now have been about as stable as can be expected with better kernels too. I'm happy for all the effort anyone has put in to allow me to not be stuck on stock...seriously try going back and realize what we have available.

I can't stop flashing new roms! It's like crack. I haven't come across any problems going between like 5 different roms and it's awesome. This is my first android phone and the experience is incredible. Thanks all you devs for all the hard work! I have to go find some thanks buttons and hand out some dollars now. Lol
Will wiping and flashing my phone too much have any negative effects?
Is there such thing as flashing too much?

Very good point. I remember the Inspire forums before the official GB builds came out. There was nothing happening and many people thought it was the start of a downhill path to the end of development for that phone. How wrong they were! Turned out all the devs didn't want to put in a lot of time to another build if GB was on the horizon. As soon as it hit, it was madness with all the new ROMs coming out. Hopefully the same happens here.
Cool I hope it all starts up soon... I will keep my eyes on the dev sections to see what comes up...fingers crossed

Yeah. Pretty much what happened was:
Things slowed down as we all waited for Rogers Gingerbread, as few people wanted to put significant efforts into Froyo. A few (like Bedwa and myself) did so more as a learning experience. The lull gave some of us time to learn and play.
Then Rogers GB came out - there was a heavy flurry of development for a few weeks, including trying to correct the deficiencies of the Rogers Gingerbread release. Correcting some of these deficiencies seemed to be nearly impossible - after multiple attempts, HDMI was hosed, data speeds were crap, and camera performance was blah.
There was also all the *****ing people did at gtg over the data speeds issue which made a lot of devs nervous about posting stuff here. Nopcodex90 almost released a GB ROM but after seeing how many people complained about fundamental uncorrectable problems with Rogers GB, I believe he decided to hold off until AT&T released Gingerbread.
So people started getting frustrated with basing anything on the Rogers release, and we all decided to take a break and have some beers rather than bash our heads against the wall for little return. On top of that LinuxBozo had some stuff come up in RL for a few weeks, and similarly I had the following chain of events make me fall behind on phone hacking:
1) Family visiting for Labor Day
2) Epic flooding (4-6 feet above previous record) where I live - I was living at a friend's 40 minutes away for a few days, then no power for a few more, and no hot water for nearly a week.
3) Nasty sinus infection - I'm just recovering from this now.
Also, thanks to Hellrasier, A LOT of new ROMs have opened up to the infuse. So check out the android development for the Samsung i9000. I've played around with a few and they work really well.
After Gingerbread is officially released more will pick up for the Infuse specifically but until then it's fun to try some of the 10-15 that the i9000 give us.

Hellraiser isn't quite seamless - there are known issues with it such as no audio on the first call without toggling speaker on/off, and all of the typical Rogers Gingerbread warts.
The other known Hellraiser issue consistent across many ROMs is that if the ROM has a "battery fully charged" notification, this notification will stick until the device is rebooted. Does not affect ROMs that nuke the notification in the first place such as Mikey's S7.
But so far nearly all I9000 ROMs work equally well with Hellraiser.
What is Hellraiser? As u can see im on my infuse from Rogers which must be what the I997R stands for.
Can I use this Hellraiser thing on my Rogers infuse?
Please advise...

Coming from a galaxy s 4g the only thing I miss is the super amoled screen.
Every nexus s I ever messed with failed to impress me, they all seemed slow and laggy, so I would say you made a good choice.

Nexus S.
ICS can be easily ported to the NS. With the G2x you have the risk of an ICS not working properly because NVIDIA doesn't release drivers.
I've never used the Nexus but I'll give you my thoughts on the G2X.
I'm a wind customer, and I only twice in about 2.5months now had the phone randomly shut down on me.
However, the stock Android kind of sucked. It's great at the beginning but as you install some more apps and start using it more and more it would start to lag and lag. Turning on WiFi would always give a slow down for some reason. Using youtube was a pain, videos would always be choppy.
2 days ago I decided I couldn't take it anymore so I installed Cyanmogen and the phone has been fantastic. No slowdowns even when doing more demanding stuff.
It's great!

im not to worried about ICS, just that this phone is really fast. atm, my 2 deal breakers between the 2 is:

i just want fast, and snappy. is the tegra 2 worth it? or is the nexus s nothing compared to the G2x?

I've seen the 2 screens side by side and the p999 is brighter on full than the nexus. The darks are slightly darker on the nexus but the whites are better on the p999. NFC isn't that big of a deal right now and I don't think many people or companies would use it in Canada for some time. The p999 is snappy ask the time, unless you are doing some really intense stuff. Battery lasts quite a bit for the usage compared to the u8100. I can't keep myself from using my phone. It is a joy to use.

NVidia is not very big on supporting their Tegra 2 platform and LG is terrible at supporting their phones. Screen bleeding issues seem common, I have a bleeding screen. I get the black screen of death occasionally. The black screen of death seems to be an issue with the OS and not the hardware.
If you don't mind third party support and likely a little screen bleed, this phone is worth every penny. Keep in mind that not every phone has screen bleed and that LG never said that the G2x will get an official ICS release, they just said that the Optimus 2X will. Many people think that includes G2x, but there really is no telling if that is true.
That said, once the Optimus 2X gets ICS (Q2 of 2012), a third party port for the G2x will probably come along whether LG releases ICS for the G2x or not.

Hi, all. I currently have an Epic 4G. But it is broken, (mic and phone speaker don't work at all) so I am entitled to a warranty replacement. This was an Asurion replacement so I talked to them. I asked them to give me a Nexus S 4G instead and I got it without too much problem. The rep I was talking to said he couldn't do it but his boss said yes without hesitation (maybe I should have asked for an Epic Touch 4G instead and seen what happened but I digress). If I am lucky the phone will arrive tomorrow but probably the next day.
Anyway, I am hoping that I can get some advice on this phone. How to root it? What Roms/Kernels are the best. Ect.
Thank you very much!
About which roms or kernels are the best, there's not an easy answer to that. Being the developer phones, the nexus line has a lot of people working on the source. This is good and bad, because there are a lot of cool things you can get on your phone, but a lot of stuff will not work. Often times there will be a tradeoff between getting bleeding edge updates and having a stable system.
That being said, NANDroid backup is your best friend. Before every flash, backup your entire phone's state. Then if nothing works, restore your backup and it is like nothing ever happened.
Well to start off, and always a good impression, is to search for the first request. Shouldn't be hard to find a thread about rooting a NS4G or a YouTube video. Just looks better on you.
As far as ROMS go, well Cyanogenmod is a well respected name in that realm. Also you could pick from any of the other hundreds of ICS Roms. Just make sure you get it from the Nexus S "4G" forum.
Dig around in the forums. Shouldn't take long to find a thread with the topics you are asking about.
Good luck and welcome to the Nexus club.

Unlock boot loader as soon as possible because it will erase everything on your phone including SD card.
As far as ROMs you've gotta use a ICS ROM. There's lot of great GB ROMs but you're not getting a Nexus to be stuck on last year's OS. CM9 Is currently my favorite. Lots of other ROMs have more tweaks like quad and octo locks but CM9 is the smoothest for me. But try em all, why not?
As far as kernels there are a lot of good options. Personally I like Steve Garden's latest. Has the best colors without using Voodoo so there's no annoying green flash when locking. But again, try em all!
Oh... and how to root? Well, it's basically "fastboot oem unlock" "fastboot flash recovery whateverrecoveryyouchoose.img" and flash the SU binary in recovery. Or just flash a ROM.
*if you didn't wipe /system and /boot it is NOT A FULL WIPE* (relax, it's a signature)

It is all depend on how much budget you have. If you have a high budget, I would say look at the Galaxy Nexus instead. Otherwise, the normal Nexus S is good enough. There aren't many 4G carrier available, and you won't need 4G in daily life.
I come from an epic. No regrets whatsoever. The only wins the epic has over the ns4g are the better camera, and speaker. Also the epic seems to get better 3g and 4g reception. Other than that everything else is so much better. Development included.

It has no personality what so ever and no one objects when others ask for ETAs which is something I've grown to genuinely love about this community Hopefully Bhundven and his team successfully port jelly bean (and have TV out working) but I'm sure a few weeks after, there'll be a mass migration back to ics in favor of a more "stable rom." lol Anywho good luck guys, the Samsung Galaxy S 4g will always be in my heart!

I've also been eyeing that phone... I think the One X is too big, and the One S is much closer to the size of the GS4G, which I like very much. I've also checked out the One S forums, but am still on the fence, especially since my phone works so well with these custom roms, I really don't have a great reason to upgrade, other than trying something new..
please report back how you like it (or send a PM if you don't want to clutter up the board here).

Yeah honestly I can't stress to you how awesome this phone is! The display is super bright, the resolution is also pretty good so don't worry about qhd complaints specially since you're coming from the S 4g display. The camera is professional quality and it preforms well day to day. If you don't like sense you can always install apex or a stock aokp ics rom but I happen to like sense personally specially the widgets and customizations. The rooting method, like for most htc phones, is significantly harder. There is another thing called S-off which has hindered development for the phone. There are still plenty of roms to play around with (including jelly bean!) but the installation is pretty tricky so for instance, you'll need to use a command prompt to flash something called a boot image to install any time and it's easy to brick. There are other new terms you'll need to learn of course. Don't let this scare you. One of the best things is the battery life (Both onscreen and stand by). The sheer performance is out of this world for example it can be over clocked to 2.1 mhz! Trust me when I say you won't regret having this phone! I've even heard from some it's better than the one X

Thanks for the info. I think I may get one off ebay when I come back from vacation. I remember being super scared about flashing my GS4G, but after lots of reading I now flash the phone without thinking, so I'll be sure to read up on the 1S.
if I do end up with a 1S, I'll be sure to offer up my GS4G here for development
