A lot of people acquired the HP Touchpad this weekend due to HP's firesale. It's fairly likely that Android will be ported over to it soon. Honestly I really wanted to get the Asus Transformer, but couldn't say no to the $99 price of the Touchpad.
So my question to you is: Do I wait until the Transformer 2 comes out or should I sell the HP and get the Transformer 1 now?
Depends if you need the dock..
Try to sell it. I'll give you $50 for it. I mean, it is a discontinued device that probably won't get much legacy support. Or buy a TF, use both for a week, and sell or return the one you like least.
i think you're a bit too omptimistic on the touchpad getting cm7. there's a lot of things to be done before a functional android port is ready for the common folk.
assuming they manage to do an insecure boot, they'd still have to implement (or find a compatible) driver for all the components of the touchpad. the android version is most liked going to be gingerbread (as per touchdroid project's set goals).
by the time a fully funation android system is up and running, it might be time for an upgrade. of course, webos isn't a terrible OS, so you would have gotten some use of it, so it's not a total waste...but if you're getting it with an android port it mind, i'd say good luck.

Well I just bought it for $115. I'm sure not going to sell it for $50 when they're selling on ebay for $215.

This is exactly the type of information I'm looking for. Thank you finalhit! I'm really green when it comes to porting an OS, so your timeframe helps to put things into perspective. I won't expect Android anytime soon. WebOS seems to work pretty great for now. I've got skype and hulu running well... and I love the way it integrates all of my photos from facebook as well as all of my email addresses seamlessly. The free 50gb of web storage is nice, and having the same screen as the iPad is great too. LOL, I think I may end up keeping both.... and then sell the Transformer when the TF2 comes out. It was only $286 anyway.
If you are searching for an highly customizable and productor supported tablet you may definitely go for the transformer IMHO..which android is designed for..
However, why do you want to sell your touchpad that you had just buy?..
If I was in you even if I want to buy the transformer I'll wait for news about the new transformer and/or news about an android port for the touchad..always IMHO..
I suggest u wait for transformer 2 wit a kal el processor which is rumoured to be out b4 christmas, and use the touchpad to hold u over til it comes in. I have a transformer and recently acquired a 32 gb touchpad bc I wanted to check out web os. I haven't received my touchpad yet but I've heard good things about web os and it should atleast do u a decent job until the next gen android tablets come out.

Like you, I have them both... TouchPad and the Transformer.
Theys hould be announcing the Transformer 2 in October. I will give the old Transformer 2 to my wife.
As for the Touchpad, I have played around with it (I bought a 32gb one)for 2 straight days. Build quality is excellent. Speed gets a disgruntled "meh". Display is nice. Flash in the browsers is EXTRA Nice (better than Android Stock browser, for sure). Speaker quality is exceptional. Headphone quality is ok, but when I plug it into my car stereo, audio levels go wayyyy down. Game play is good also. A year ago, folks would pay $99-150.00 for a Digital Picture frame. If I can find the stand, for between $30.00-$50.00, I wil l have paid $180-200.00 for a DPF that also plays music, streams movies (get Kalemsoft), surfs the web, plays games, and if they finish the QuickOffice app correctly, types papers.
I think it was and is the DEAL of the century.
I'd say just keep the Touchpad. $115 doesn't really dent your wallet, and by the time the TF 2 comes out decide to get it then. From what I've seen, I think the Touchpad would be a nice couch tablet, especially for the price. Just have it on the coffee table in front of your TV. Seems perfect for those moments when your wondering who that pretty actress is, or when said movie was made, etc. I couldn't see myself using it as a everyday tab like my TF.
EDIT: Anyone know where they are in stock? I want one, my mom wants one, and so does her co-worker, but we'd like to only pay the discounted $99.

Not in stock anywhere anymore. Maybe HP might get some shipments from retailers like costco who shipped their inventory back, so the official hp site is probably ur best bet, but i doubt they will get em.
Is it worth buying now or just wait for Xoom 2 or I should buy Galaxy Tab 10.1?
I have iPad 1 ,but I don't like it ,it not very productivity just game. I am now considering buying an Android Tablet.
Should I buy Xoom or Galaxy Tab 10.1? I also like to flash new ROM. Which one have more custom ROM?
Good question. My two cents...
Presumably, Google will release the source code for Honeycomb sometime soon after the release of Icecream Sandwich. It's also a (I believe widely accepted) presumption that a new model Xoom will be released soon, especially with the Christmas season approaching.
Not that Google and Motorola should really ever be expected to have their **** together enough to coordinate this correctly, from a marketing stand point it makes the most sense. It would make sense that the new Xoom would have the new OS in it.
However, two great things will happen if that's all true; three price of the Xoom 1 will drop considerably (it already has dropped pretty far), and new Honeycomb ROMs will be popping up with far better customizable interfaces and capabilities than Icecream Samich!
This is all speculation on my part, and I may be completely ignorant of some key facts, but it's the reason why I have no interest in a new tablet or Icecream Sandwich.
My last experience with this sort of thing was when I was loading my Droid 1. Even though updates were open source (TRUE O.S.), and always highly anticipated, they never really contained anything so mind blowing that I ever felt it was worth jumping to a new custom made ROM that had it.
My advice is to get a Xoom now, or just when the new one hits the market. I'm no expert and would love tosee what other members say.
Yes...I bought mine three weeks ago.
But then again I wanted a solid tab experience and the Galaxy didnt cut it for me.
Build quality is better on the Xoom IMO - and I was lucky to snag a new one at $449.
A few things that I like about the Xoom:
- Screen quality is great on my unit - even though its an AUO.
- Sound quality is the best of any tablet. Im assuming you are using this device for media consumption and you wont be disappointed with the speaker layout or sound.
- Build quality is top notch. No Flex. Gorilla Glass.
- My unit is Wifi only (I have a tether plan if needed) and the battery life even on Stock ROM and Kernel is fantastic (rooted).
- For business use I like this tablet a lot. I can have clients sign .pdf's with ease and handle Office docs easily with QuickOffice and Repligo (Worth the $20 for a business professional)
There will always be something better because of the push to create with Android. Do yourself a favor and buy this now (if you play with it and like it of course) and if you need to upgrade in a year or so then do so.

I echo those sentiments.
i agree too, i bought mine even after i found out that motorola is preparing a quad core tab for release soon, but if i kept waiting for the latest then i will never end up buying anything, and i understand that every open source tablet with android is supported with updates for 18 months maybe ? i remember i read that somewhere, so motorola and google now as one company will support updates for us till october 2012 so i am pretty sure we will also get ICS
I just put my TP on e-bay. Now my TP had a OC 1.7 dual core with a gig of ram and a great GPU and IMO the best speaker system you could want. Once honeycomb gets put on it it will rock and be one of the best tabs there are right now IMO.
But i still sold it. I need HDMI out, SD card reader and the accessory support. I got a wifi only xoom for 310 shipped on ebay.
So really its up to you lol
I bought my xoom 3g second hand for 275. Loving it. But if price wasn't an issue, I might have gone with a galaxy tab 10.1 because it is a lot lighter which I think is important for a device you are going to be hold up to read a lot. Samsung manufactures excellent screens as well.

Xoom is better imho...you got a fantastic deal. Enjoy it and don't look back.
The XOOM is so lame I would say get an iPad2, there still isn't a better tablet in terms of pure processing power. The productivity apps are more robust than anything on Android. OpenOffice, QuickOffice and the like just fall short for anyone who is serious about getting work done. Android is still too juvenile at this stage. IPS isn't much better but if you're determined to make that mistake, the iPad 2 is the smartest way to do such a dumb thing. It's more expensive than a XOOM but costs less than the ASIA EEE Slate (the Win7 one) or the Lenovo Thinkpad X220. Those are powerful tablet like machines that are great for the enterprise.

I couldn't disagree more. There's nothing juvenile about the Xoom or android. The Xoom is for people who enjoy making the tablet their own. But YMMV.

Sorry man, the iPad is really good at many things and really bad at many things. Most importantly though, the iPad is the dumbest way to do a smart thing (usually, there are exceptions). If you are truly smart, you don't need preschool level hand holding, or ridiculous restrictions, to get things done.
Android is far more likely to be used by smart people than an iPad. Sorry but it's true. This doesn't mean there are no smart people using iPads, it simply means there are more dumb people using iPads than there are dumb people using Xooms(or other Android tablets). I say this because it's simple logistics. If you are dumb and you are looking at tablets, the only guidance you are likely to get is to buy an iPad. Just go into most retail outlets and watch what they push on the inexperienced.
Also, I agree that the best tablets will be the tablets that run a full OS. However, we are at least 10-12 months away from Windows 8. I wouldn't recommend a Windows tablet until Windows 8 is released.
Having said all this, I don't really like to call people dumb. Less experienced is a more appropriate description most of the time. There are, however, some people who really are just dumb.
I have had the iPad, several crappy and cheap Android tablets, The Nook Color, Acer Iconia A500, HP Touchpad, and (as of yesterday) the Motorola Xoom.
I chose the Xoom because I think it will receive the most love from Google in the future. This is for obvious reasons. I also chose the Xoom because it has accessory and dock options, expandable memory slot, and HDMI out without any proprietary adapters. I have just started to mess with this device but I do like the feel of it and it seems to be very well built.
My initial impression, in comparison to the Iconia, is that the performance is much smoother. One of the things about the Iconia was that the stock rom was very laggy at times. I haven't noticed this with the Xoom yet. Also, there isn't any add-on crap on the Xoom either. I prefer mostly stock Android, and the Iconia had a couple (in my opinion stupid) enhancements. This may explain the difference in performance. The only cool thing, I will miss, on the Iconia is the full size USB port.
I look forward to seeing what I can do with this device. It should work well with my SGS II.
Yea..im gonna wait until after Christmas and grab me a Xoom. mainly cause i don't have the money now lol. Or else i'd grab one now. But im happy playing with my Flashed GTab for the moment.
Don't know why i NEED a Xoom. Maybe the sexiness of it. Im not a Flasher. (Mine was already flashed when i got it). So Xoom already having 3.1 and upgradeable over the air right? Should be good enough for me.
Is 370$ good price for the xoom?
I will study in college soon and i am wondering if the xoom will suit me?

It's quite a good price. I think it should suit you fine.
Don't misunderstand. I recommended the iPad 2 for business solely because of the raw power of the cpu and the gpu. When combined with the robustness of the productivity software, it's a smarter choice for business for the money.
This isn't an emotional choice. If I had what I wanted, it would be something as powerful as the A9 processor with that gpu running win8.

I love Android, and especially the community that every device has.
I currently have an Epic 4G Touch (Sprint's GSII) and I have never owned a tablet.
This Thanksgiving break I visited my cousins and lo behold, practically all of them had an iPad 2. It was a very convenient thing to have around, I never really saw a tablet as a useful item. But I see that tablets are really neat now, it's like a phone, but bigger and not as heavy and clunky as a laptop.
And with today's web based world, it's really convenient to have a tablet on your coffee table to just use when chatting with friends, family gatherings or just watching tv and you need to look up something on the web. Or a device to watch Netflix or Hulu on, but your phone's screen is just too small and it's weird to hold it. Blah blah, useful features could go on.
Anyways, I missed the BestBuy sale for $250 unfortunately, and Gamestop is sold out for $300. But on Craiglist, a lot of folks are selling them for $330 unopened because they are bastards and bought them during black friday to make a profit.
I know the Transformer Prime is coming out on 12/8 for $500 but I simply can't afford that. Do you guys think that the regular Transformer will drop down in Price after the Prime comes out?
So I am left with multiple dilemmas:
1. Buy brand new for $330 off craiglist
2. Wait for possible price drop
3. 3D monitor + nVidia 3D vision kit
4. Solid State Drive
When I look into Android products I look into the modding community for the device on XDA, and it looks like the Eee pad has the best one.
So, should I get one or no?
If you could provide me with a link to buy one for under $300, I will buy it without hesitation.
Thank you
I can't give you a link, but I will tell you that you will certainly love your Eee Pad. Keep looking. This week has a lot of good internet deals. You're bound to find something. Otherwise offer someone on craigslist around $315 and see if they bite. Even at $330, its still a great value.

As an owner of a transformer I can personally say that it's a great device. It does everything for me (including the stuff you listed) and i'm not sure how much a performance boost the quad core will actually bring (to me i think the tegra 3 is an overkill in processor power).
I recall asus saying that when the transformer prime is released, the old transformer price will drop to 250 and 350 for the 16 and 32gb models (respectively). Don't quote me on this though.
However, if your interested in the dev/modding of the transformer you may be disappointed. I believe all the models you'll find in the stores today will have a locked kernel which means you can't root the device (until the xda dev's figure a way out)

In fact there's a one click root for all models in the dev section
New models can be rooted now. There is a link in the dev section somewhere. If you can wait untill the Prime comes out I will have 2 32gb for sale. Already rooted, with or without docks. In fact when the Prime comes out like the other poster said I bet you can get a good deal. I was planning on selling mine for 300 without dock when the time comes.

If you buy a transformer retail you can always get a price adjustment if it does drop. Bestbuy extended their return policy for 60 days during christmas. Just an idea.

Save your money and go to Best Buy and price match it with Game Stop for $299. I just bought the wife one for Christmas.
There will be a lot of these for sale as people trade up to the Prime, however I would be very cautious of the Craig's list ones advertised as new in box. They are more likely to be used with the box. The same thing happened when the current transformer replaced the Viewsonic Gtab. Once the prime comes out, you should be able to get a good used TF for $250 or so with some acc.

You should be able to find one for $300. I bought one (excellent condition, barely used) last week with dock for $350 and there seem to be a few at around 320 without dock. Wait a week or so, people who have it at 320+ will not end up selling them anyway and when the prime comes out they'll go in the 250-300 range pretty quickly.
Best buy models are tf101-x1 and everywhere else they are the original tf101-a1. Best buy did this to prevent price matching the device because Walmart and others sold the a1 model, good luck on price matching

Just to revisit the original question for a moment, the SSD purchase might be a compelling alternative. It depends how you use the PC you would be putting it in, but they can pretty dramatically speed up a lot of tasks. Disk I/O is quite often the bottle neck in modern systems, and going from a spinning platter and arm to no moving parts could have a dramatic effect. Again though it all depends on how powerful your system is (if it can take full advantage of the IO speed gains), and what types of tasks you use it for.
Of course the flip side of that is: you may end up using your PC a LOT less if you pick up a Transformer, Prime or original. I know I do. Between my blackberry (email, instant messaging) and transformer (web surfing, google reader for rss feeds, and occasional angry birds or similar simple gaming), I barely have to use my laptop any more.
I got mine during black friday at best buy too. I was hestitant at first and wasn't sure about the rooting because of it being a newer and different model but this tablet is amazing. I love the internet, FLASH!, the apps, and the widgets. I hooked up to my tv the other day to show my roomates and they were blown away. I already rooted mine too just need to overclock it. This is is my first tablet and android device. The camera isn't that great but I did not get it for the camera. I recommend the best buy way. Buy it now and when the prime comes out you can return it to best buy and get the prime.
If I play with the prime and it seems worth it I will probably do that. However, if you want a first generation one there will probably be lots of people selling them on here. Totally worth the black friday mess and being short for rent. Also, if you use your phone as a hot spot with it it's even more amazing. There are plenty of apps to enjoy even without wi-fi and spotify or rdio for music.
I atually do use my laptop less now. Only thing I dont like is the laggyness of the keyboard strokes on this site. I am hoping overclocking will solve it. Dolphin and stock are both fast but I like dolphin the best so far. I'm falling in love with the touch gestures. Made one just for XDA
There are a couple of ways to get it for $299. Call around to the local game stops and see if they have the transformer in stock. When you called best buy you gave too much information.
have been looking round for a tab, while the transformer prime seems best its now almost double the cost of the xoom, even though the xoom is quite old, it seems anything else around is still tegra2 or dual core similar spec hardware to the xoom, so i dont see any point apart from the weight in getting anything newer or more expensive, is it still a good option guys? you can get one for around £260 in the UK where as the transformer prime would be £499 and the original transformer maybe £350
i just returned a scroll extreme as it was just soooooooooooooo laggy!! i dont want anything with huge lag like that again
This late? I wouldn't buy the xoom today at its current price.

So I'm the first to respond...the original Xoom is a wonderful device and is even better now than it was when it was new because it has ICS official update, and best of all, the most fantastic developers and real bleeding-edge advances in Xoom software. It's so well built and sturdy that the bit of additional weight doesn't matter. In my opinion the Xoom is still the best tablet available, as everything works well and there's tons of additional functionality with custom roms.
The xoom is built like a tank and with it's specs what else out there is better for the money. I have two of them and the last one I picked up for $315 U.S.
Picked up 32 gb wifi only xoom a few months back with original box and 5 cases (4 still sealed) for $275 off craigslist. Didn't think it was too bad and I'll be keeping xoom for awhile

the only thing i can see maybe 'better' for the money is the asus transformer 101 maybe just because its a little lighter and can be expanded with the kb if need be, also the connectivity looks a little better placed, and its just as supposed with roms and people using it. These are both £290 ish in the UK?
i mean the xoom 2 is a little more expensive but for that lighter slimmer body you lose the expansion slow, sure you can use the usb host but i dont like that idea, would prefer an expansion slot, the galaxy tab just seem out there with the price, then you have the acer a200 which ones again is similar so im thinking the original xoom or asus transformer in this price bracket is the best option...
I only got my Xoom about 3 weeks ago, £280 from PC world. Been an android guy for a year now so did my research to see what the community support was like. Noticed that we're getting official CM9 support, that made the deal even sweeter. Still team EOS provide excellent support on AOSP builds. Even in terms of specs, great screen, great processor, can be overclocked (and stable). In my opinion this is still a great buy!
I too want to buy a tablet. But I'm confused between xoom, galaxy tab 10.1 and transformer TF101.
So what do you guys suggest?
My requirements are, good support by Dev community and which wont brick easily...
Thanks..
Peace.
Hi I just picked up a Motorola Xoom WiFi 32GB via a pricerunner.co.uk search. This got me a £5 discount making the delivered price just under £245. I tried to upgrade to ICE/Android 4.0, but managed to “Brick” the device …so be warned and be patient.
Fortunately I manage to resolve this issue with the help of some XDA forum links, YouTube and Motorola site itself. I will try and write up the details of my problem and solution in another thread.
I am now back to the original Android 3.2 version and so far I am very happy the XOOM.

the Xoom has great community support and as far as I know the galaxy tab 10.1 does too because that was another option of mine and community support is a big factor when I buy a new product both I believe are getting official CM9 support. i can't speak for the TF101,I don't know much about that one

I have all three and the best will be the one you can find at the best price. All three are near similar hardware with each having an advantage/disadvantage to the others.
Community/Dev support I would have to say the Xoom wins though...as well as being difficult to brick. Google "Experience" device really makes the Xoom a great device.
(I use the Xoom, my wife is using the Transformer and I gave my mother the Galaxy Tab).
in my opinion, its the best tablet for the cost.
main cons are weight and potentially out of date hardware. that hasn't stopped it from being the first official device to receive 4.0.4
would love if i could get a 2nd one as backup.
HD dock is wonderful. it even works with my otterbox.
Xoom is the best overall tablet. Newer tablets have shinier items, but considering the durability, functionality, support and overall user experience, I don't think you could go wrong buying a xoom.
I do have a Xoom either and I think it's a good choice and you won't regret buying it. It isn't expensive for its quality and it runs very well and smoothly especially with CM9 ICS.

Actually, the Xoom has a better frame rate than the Transformer 101. You could search for the thread that proves it somewhere here in General or Q&A (sometime last summer?).
If you can find one for a good price I think it's a no-brainer. Great build quality and great active devs on XDa. What more could you possibly ask for?

Actually xoom is not availiable online right now and the one availiable in stores is a 3g model which is out of my range. So I was thinking about buying galaxy tab..
So what do you guys suggest? Should I go for the tab or spend some extra bucks on xoom?
I really can't decide.. coz both of them almost same...
Peace.

check craigslist in your area, or look on ebay. do your research and you are sure to find a great deal!
I've had Xoom since almost release day. Wifi at start and chose it over the galaxy tab just cause it felt more rugged. Tab was nice but felt cheep. Haven't regretted it one bit. Now I own 2 xooms, wifi and 4g, wifi one my son mainly uses. Got my 3g/4g on Craigslist for 400, came dock, leather case and original box.
based on your guys opinions here and elsewhere, i ordered the xoom and should have it in my hands tomorrow. really excited about this device! i even changed my sig already
Alright guys. Looking to get my mom a tablet so she can stop using my laptop lol. General use is ebay, facebook, youtube etc.
I think something from 8.9 to 10 inches would be ideal, as she can prop it on the table and look at it. as opposed to a 7 inch tablet.
I was looking at the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 for its HD picture, and overall seems like a good general use tablet, but i know the lack of sd card support and needing to be rooted to get google play store kinda put me off.
I dont really want to stick her with an ipad, don't want her tied to sticking with itunes.
but i know since it is not for me, i shouldn't bother tweaking and modding it than worrying about auto-updates etc lol.
Got to be able to find a stylish case for it that offers a lil protection.
I am open for suggestions. I want it to be around $400 . My step dad and I will be going half on it (I dont make that much money but I will put down $200) .
I guess even a Nook HD+ looks decent, but the hardware specs seem a bit dated now.

I bought the 9.7-inch Sumivision Cyclone Voyager II. Not far off your price bracket in the UK.
Cyclone Voyager 2
From a quick glance, not a Nexus, but not far off it.
I heartily recommend the Hisense Sero 7 Pro, which you should be able to pick up at your local Walmart for $149. I won't get into the detailed specs here (Google is your friend ) but it's practically a clone of the Nexus 7 but with front and rear cameras and an external SD slot, all for about 70 bucks less than the Nexus. In a similar situation as yours I bought it for my Mum's birthday and it was a great decision -- it's a great little tab! And there are threads here on xda for rooting and a few ROMs that are being developed.
Good luck with your Xmas shopping!
[Edit: I reread and see you're looking for something bigger than a 7-inch tablet -- I still think this one's a great deal though; you might want to consider it anyway. And you can get a nice i-Unik case for it on Amazon.]

That Sero 7 does look pretty interesting, i may have to get that for myself after the holidays lol.
I may go with the galaxy tab 3 or note 10.1 depending on how much my step dad is gonna pitch in on the gift. Maybe a bit overkill but should get a few years out of it imo.
