[Q] Gtalk video FC on all roms - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been installing various roms on my brothers nexus s 4g and I am having trouble finding one with working video chat in Gtalk. I found one rom that I could get video working on but it wasnt full screen and he said it was on his stock rom so he was hoping to keep it that way. Every other rom I have tried including this one just force close when you click to initiate a video chat with someone. Any help is greatly appriciated and thanks a ton for all of your hard work!

try going to the phones main settings, applications, manage apps, all, talk.. then clear its data. then either open your terminal emulator and type..
su(press enter)
fix_permissions(press enter)
or boot into recovery and fix permissions there.

Get the latest gapps and flash over. Should fix it.

I got the newest gapps and it is indeed working now so thank you very much for the help in that department. However, when you make a video the person you are watching is in a small window and on the stock rom it was full screen, Is it possible to get that to work as well?

Hmm... not sure. Did you wipe dalvik and cache after flashing gapps? You might want to do it again if you didn't. I've never seen the screens opposite to what they should be.

I can't remember if I did or not so I'll have him give that I shot. Just the video of the person you are talking to is not full screen, the window that shows you is normal... If that makes any sense. Thanks for the help ill report how it goes

That would Hapsburg if the person is using a wideangle cam. It would also be the same as turning your phone 90 degrees.

Yes, its finally here Part 1 of 2.
In this video, I show you how to root, unlock and s-off your Inspire 4G.
Youtube kinda screwed up 2 of the scenes (all black, no image). I'll reupload the video again tonight. The hard parts are all working luckily

I'm picking up one of these tomorrow. Its good to know I can make these changes.
thanks for this! i was so lost
Thank you r34p3rex, I am waiting until part 2 to do this. So I can make sure I have sound to my phone.

Tinny I'm working on rooting the stock ROM right now Hopefully that will fix the problem
r34p3rex... Dude you are bad ass..
Very nice video, this makes this process seem much more doable! I'm coming from an LG GW620 (where the most difficult things I had to do were superoneclick and fastboot), and picked up an Inspire last night after looking around this forum all day yesterday. Excited to hear about your progress on rooting the stock ROM
stickie
Should be stickied in development area.
r34p3rex,
Question for ya, I want to root the phone just to have access to the files to change some stuff around and to get rid of that crappy bloatware. I like the HTC Sense 2.0 the Inspire has and want to keep that. Should I just wait to root my phone until more roms come out. I mean I dont want my sound messed with to keep the UI, But I want to keep the stock rom.

If you want to keep your sound quality while retaining root, try out this rooted stock ROM i posted earlier: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=958021
Some people have had problems with WiFi though, so YMMV

Hello,
I have featured the same guide at AddictiveTips and just came across this excellent video of yours. Started editing my guide to post an update mentioning you had made this video that demonstrates the entire process...but when I tried embedding it, I found it disabled. Can you please enable it? I have included a link to your video in my guide for now but an embedded one would be even better.
Thanks for all your awesome work!

Everything worked for me except the sound fix. I didn't get any errors but I still don't have sound. I'm not sure what to do now.
Edit: I flashed a different ROM and I have sound now.
Can't seem to root...
r34p3rex, I need your help on something... at 13.55 into your 1st video (part 1), you typed in '/data/local/tmp/root' and got a message that the "file Exists"... I did the same thing but I get "not found". What did I do wrong? I need help with this, cuz it seems that it did not root. Very concerned about this. Thanks!
hey great guide i didnt have any problems until i got to video number 2. For some reason i cant get the radio to flash. it says that it updates but nothing changes. i noticed in the video that the radio showing up on your phone and mine are different. not sure what im doing wrong. any help is appreciated
Interesting...
I just tried for sh*ts and giggles plugging in a 3.5mm jack and turning on the radio and then putting it in speaker mode and I have sound. I just don't have phone sound... Hmmm. Oh well.

ICS Perfection

I have been here reading about the glitches folks are having with the ICS leak such as shutdown-reboot freeze, freeze on mms deletion, battery consumption and others. I am happy to say that I have not experienced any of these glitches, other than the contacts tab missing from the phone app (and thats is not even technically a glitch). I have been resistant to flashing any of the new CWM Roms because this original oneclick version runs so perfectly for me. Is there anything from my phone that the Devs might want to look at to help narrow the cause of these issues that others are having?
Same, no issues here. This is the first leak that I have had no problems with.
Same here no issues except for shutdown :-(.... Im trying to fix though

First flash I had no home button, second flash (current) my home button is a little laggy, all the other buttons vibrate isntantly but home has a very slight delay, doesnt really affect anything. everything else seems to work, except google wallet for me.
first flash was perfect, i borked it trying to import AOSP pieces haha
second flash was no home button, factory reset fixed that, still have the reboot problem though.
sometimes when i use rynga or viber i loose the incall sound so i have to restart the phone to fix it.. and i use them but then i loose the sound again

So when deleting txt messages it doesn't forceclose on you either? You must be the only one cause its happening to everyone that's reported issues with the release.

Nope, no FC on deleting mms or sms. I will make a screencast video to show the normal operation. I was hoping that maybe some files in my phone would be useful to a dev to get it fixed for others. The only thing I have done to it other than install basic apps is to root and add GO Launcher with ics theme.
Can anyone confirm that tethering (non-AT&T approved) is working with the leak? That's the one thing keeping me from upgrading from the GB from I'm on.

Is this better? And to be clear, I never said it was a "fix" or "workaround" in any way. Read the OP, and you will see that this is the one click method install with no mods other than root and Go Launcher. I stated it worked on it's own correctly.

Unless you want all of the world to have "Peggy's" number, I'd take that down pretty quick
Scott, thanks, lol. I am SO tired tonight. I edited. Now could you edit it from your quote please? Thanks again.
I have done some further reading and noticed the people not getting these problems are the ones such as myself who did no kind of wipe before using Odin and oneclick solution to upgrade from GB to ICS. I did no wipes only because I got ahead of myself accidentally. Maybe this time it paid off for me. Has anyone looked into the possibility that it is the initial wipe process causing the issues that are being presented?

So I watched the video, and since I had this problem was skeptical. I noticed you used delete threads from menu. I was def getting force close when long pressing and hitting delete thread. I tried it your way, and it worked fine. Then I tried it with long click and it works now too. Problems that fix themselves, don't get it. But I'll take it

[Q] 4.2 camera crash on AOKP M1

My Fellow android enthusiasts
Firstly, I would like to apologize in advance, as I have already asked this question in the 4.2 GAPPS section. re-posting it here since it is device specific (or may be). I am less than 2 hours into the forum so please excuse teething mistakes
I am stuck and need your help. I am running a rooted (of course!) VZW GS3 16 GB. I am on AOKP JB-milestone 1 ROM, Kernel 3.0.48. Android version 4.1.2.
Now I love the new camera and gallery. I have grabbed and flashed multiple versions of the same (android police, droidlife, the whole GAPPS 4.2 package... and multiple more).
In every version I have tried, I have had the same issue.. everything works (video, panaroma, stills during video, photoshpere viewer, gallery effects etc..) however, the most BASIC function, the one of taking still pictures DOES NOT WORK!!!.
The moment I take a still picture, the camera and the gallery crash, and I have to reboot to get them working (as previously) again. I have tried and tried and tried, multiple versions, complete rebuild, everything, no effect. I am at my wit's end, and seek the asistance of your prodigious intellectual faculties to help me put of this jam...
On a side note, I have not yet figured out a way of changing the storage location to external memory card in this new camera.. cant find the setting...
Please help me out friends..

Its a known bug on at least AOSP roms on the galaxy S3 that taking regular pictures without first touching the screen to focus causes the camera to flash. Also i believe using the camera flash causes issues as well. You just need to touch to focus first.
THANK YOU!!!!

You're welcome just glad i could help you out!
I'm having the exact same problem on the GSIII for AT&T, just to clarify after some guess and check. You have to hit the shutter button immediately after tapping the screen to focus. If you wait till after it achieves focus to hit the shutter button, it'll still lock up. You might want to have a standby camera app in case you want other people to take a photo for you and don't want to explain the bug in your camera app.
Thanks for posting the problem in such detail. Google took me straight here. And cheers for answering so quickly!

THANKS matt6800 - that solution works. Kinda sux though! So is there any fix yet?
Another wrinkle to this:
EDIT: not a new wrinkle! Discovered that my photos were in fact saved at the beginning of my gallery, not lost
adamt19 said:
Another wrinkle to this:
If you take a bunch of pictures using the workaround (touching the screen first) and then forget to do so on the next picture, the gallery app (camera) will freeze AND if you reboot (to regain access to the camera) you will lose all the pictures you took since the last restart.
This burned me badly with a bunch of vacation photos, which I seem to have lost forever due to an incomplete understanding of the consequences of this bug.
So hopefully this prevents others from realizing it before its too late.
Its more than a force-close!

That's a ***** of a bug. I had no clue it was that bad, I stayed away from it when I found out if I forgot to touch the screen I would have to reboot cause I knew I would inevitably forget to touch it. I wish there was a fix for this. It'd be nice to use the new camera.

for those who really want the 4.2 camera, and are VZW, try these two TW ROMs (i know, they are not AOSP, but at the moment, these are the only two with working, unglitchy 4.2 cameras):
rally rom, has working 4.2 camera and other 4.2 gapps. This is a stripped down (432MBs) ROM, quick, and smooth.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2025739
SYNERGY ROM: this one also has both cameras and galleries, so you can pick and choose which one works the best for your situation:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792499
SYNERGY was just recently updated and the dev team is really good about answering questions.

Thanks a lot, Matt. that solution also worked for me!!!
I'm so happy that i could revive my camera app now!!
Thank you again!!

[Q] Sensation Freezes when launching camera app

I've seen this asked before but with no resolution but I was hoping someone could help.
Whenever I attempt to launch the camera app, my entire screen goes black (but still back lit) and sometimes even will vibrate the phone when I touch keys. At this point I have to pull the battery out, as the phone no longer responds to anything.
I snagged a LogCat of when it happens and have (what I hope is) the relevant part of it. If anyone can be of any help, please let me know.
I can't post the link to the logcat here (I'm still under the post limit for outside links), so I an always PM it to you.
Oh and I'm running Bruce2728's nightlies of CM10, just in case (but this was happening when the phone was on the stable CM9 build too).

Video camera
Been using Liquidsmooth for the past couple of days and I've been getting decent battery life and 95% of the apps I've tried have worked great. I'm seriously considering this for my daily driver. The only thing is the camera. Open camera or other camera apps on play can take pictures, but they can't take video. The apps throw error messages like "this mode isn't supported" when changing bit rate or frame rate or resolution. Basically it seems the app is unable to get any information about the physical video camera from the OS.

I seem to be having camera and WiFi issues. For camera, I can't use apps like Google translate. I get an error "camera has stopped' and it FC's. As for WiFi, it has trouble turning on and off. I usually have to restart my phone, otherwise it says " turning on/off WiFi" forever.
You have to use Open Camera to take pictures, sorry video doesn't work some say vivavideo works. As for wifi don't turn it off and when connecting to a new network hold the wifi notifications toggle and wait for it to connect.

Noticing some things that are causing battery drain. When I look at the Battery usage the apps or services with the highest usage are things like Google Play Store or Browser and Bluetooth. Turning off bluetooth stopped that. I had to Force Stop the Browser and Google Play Store. They both had 'Mobile radio active' times above 2h 30m even though I only had maybe 20 minutes of screen time. I did download an app that took about 30 seconds though. Something about the apps are keeping the mobile radio services going.

I have to link it because it doesn't show up in play store searches for some reason.
Attempting to use the phone while connected to my car bluetooth doesn't use the bluetooth connection for sound or mic. The bluetooth is connected and it says Phone and Media audio are both available. The phone becomes unresponsive and eventually asks if I want to wait or stop.

Upgrades are fine. We're not getting Lollipop OTA though.

Awesome, thanks for the info.
Do I still need to use Safestrap or can I flash it just like any other ROM?
-I hate question and answer threads, but I understand and appreciate their purpose. To that end. I must ask. Is 01-29-15 the latest build. If not where could I find those. I've looked so far on android file host and drdevs and g+ liquid.
I'm running 01-29-15 and I don't think people are getting my messages. SMS. Calls go out fine. I use selectel so it could be something with that. I hope I backed up everything I needed. and did a nvbackup.
Sorry if this has been asked, even sorrier if it's been repeatedly asked, but I do search both liquid threads and the other sites to be fair..
EDIT:
SMS works for me. Sorry about that but couldn't get anyone to reply back quick enough. I have settings turned on to get delivery receipts and to use a "dark" theme, Nether are working. Is this an issue.. And Please don't think I'm *****ing. I know this is early still in the ballgame and we're lucky honestly to have something this nice up and running. And to have a couple choices
Now on to the question of where to find the latest builds.
Thanks again

I think if you are using SafeStrap you can only flash TouchWiz Roms.

Yes 1-29 is the newest. LiquidSmooth is being rebased from CM 12 to Slim-caf so that Layers will work 100%, so I cannot build until that is done☺. Sorry for any inconvenience. New builds hopefully Monday.

Thanks man but no rush. I didn't mean to sound like I was asking for an ETA. But thanks for all the info.

No problem. Better then one of the others on the main thread.
LiquidSmooth d2usc/d2vzw maintainer

You are absolutely correct. If running safestrap your bootloader is locked down. If you attempt to run anything other than touchwiz BL roms you will brick the phone

And @Orion116 thanks for being a maintainer for LS, even though I've moved on from my S3 I still have it and use it on wifi
