Looking to get wifi tethering to work on your Tablet, PS3, Network Bluray, or other android phones with your Droid Charge 4G? Look no further than this thread.
Samsung Galaxy Phones: Droid Charge 4g, Captivate, Fascinate, Epic 4g
1. Download Wifi tether 3.1-beta6 http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wifi_tether_v3_1-beta6.apk
2. Go to options>Settings>change device-profile= choose your phone: Droid Charge works with Epic 4G
3. Go to options>Settings>change setup-method = "Softap for samsung (master)
4. Enable wifi-encryption
5. Reboot your phone (VERY IMPORTANT)
6. Start android tether and away you go
I am getting 25Mbps down and 7Mbps up on my hp touchpad!!!!!!!!!!!
EDIT##
Also, each time you start and stop tethering it requires a reboot for tethering to work Again.
I have a GTab, not a Touchpad. Like a boss.
Also, can't wait to see people get v&ed for using too much data.
PS: using your Charge for xbox Live or psn is a bad idea because the ping times are awful for gaming.

4g speeds though?
Yeah 3.1 is insanely buggy, first try and it kicked me off my 4g(had to airplane toggle). Second try it froze my phone up, wouldn't turn on and required me to press home and wait about 2 minutes for the black screen to disappear so I could close the damned app.
So it's confirmed the older ones work with 4g??
Ive been using it for a couple months now and have no issues.

It works without having to do a reboot or toggle airplane mode. And it works with 4G.

The 3.0 pre 14 works fine also, that's what I've been using and it works perfectly.
I wasn't sure what version I was using so I just checked and that's what it is. I tether my iPad 2 and a couple PC laptops using that and never had a problem.
I don't go crazy with the tethering like some posters do however, I really don't want to risk messing up my unlimited VZ data plan........

I was on 3.1 beta 6 which provided the 4g LTE speeds. I uninstalled 3.1 beta 6 (cleared the data) and then rebooted. I installed 3.0 pre 12, set it as the Samsung Fascinate profile and then rebooted. I was able to achieve 22Mbits down and 6 up via the speakeasy speed test and stop/start the app WITHOUT rebooting The key tip is to REBOOT the app after you configure the settings. If you do not reboot, you will be stuck at some weird slow speeds (4mbits down and 9 up).
I am running the Humble 1.51 ROM with the EP1Q modem.

3 or 4G. What ever your phone is connected to. I was on 4G myself and was just as fast as my home internet.
might want to try wifi tether 3.0 pre 12.
worked much better then 3.1. wifi tether would lock up after every use on 3.1. you couldn't turn it on, off, back on and still work right. only would get fixed by rebooting. 3.0 pre 12 doesnt have this issue. you can turn on,off,on,off, etc with no reboots.

If it keeps up, go to your apn settings and create a new one with the apn internet2.voicestream.com and you should be able to bypass the tethering message. If you keep it by default, mms will fail with that apn. You should be able to set the epc apn for mms only and the other for internet. something like that.
You can also try internet3.voicestream.com also. Speeds vary for the two apn's based on my experience.

I just got the T-mobile $30 5GB "unlimited"/ 100 minute prepaid voice plan.
In a short test the built in wifi hotspot feature in the stock Gingerbread Settings tab seems to work. T-mobile does not offer any add-ons for tethering on this plan.
Is it safe to use this built in feature, or should I be looking for some other app (open garden?) to do this?
nope this is what my dad uses and works great. if you have problems with it then get an alternative wifi tether.
clockworkmod tether is still in beta but I have it on my phone and it works great. google it. the software package you install on your pc installs the apk on your phone.
Me and my wife have been using the mobile AP for over a year and we just upgraded to ginger bread and now when we use it we get a message telling us we have to upgrade our plan and then next time we try to use it the Web will not work it just sends you to Tmobile. We tried downloading pda net from the market but you still can't go to sights that require passwords. It would be nice to find a way around this.

I've been testing... Although the newest 3.1 Beta 7 may have fixed the need to reboot between tether sessions, 3.0 pre-12 Experimental is still better. Not only does it not have the reboot issue, it also gives me 4G speed on tether. The latest Beta has me limited to 3G.
Although I feel the user opinions available are better in Beta 7, in my opinion, WiFi Tether 3.0 pre-12 Experimental is the best application available for EP4D tethering at this time. No reboots + 4G tethering speed.

Yup. Since the phone is capable of becoming a wireless access point, being rooted means you're able to do it. Whereas, unrooted, you need Verizon's permission.
Honestly, it's BS. I pay for my data plan (ha, OK, I'm unlimited) and should be allowed to use that data as I see fit. If I'm paying $30 extra per month of what amounts to "internet services" who cares if it's on my phone or on my iPad?
Aside from Sprint and the smaller carriers (Metro PCS, etc), all of these companies are greedy like Wall St.

Hi. I'm having trouble using Wi-Fi Tether.
Whenever I'm tethering I experience frequent disconnects and reconnects on my desktop (running Windows 7 Ultimate). I can see it most clearly when I'm torrenting a file. Every minute or so the connection just drops, and 30 seconds or more later starts up again. It even affects my browsing. When the connection drops no sites will load.
I've tried three different apps: Barnacle, OpenGarden, and the WiFi Tether 3.0 Pre 12 app.
Currently I'm on Tweakstock 1.1 ROM with stock kernel. I was previously on PBJ kernel and Infinity ROM, and then flashed to Eclipse 1.2 ROM, and with both ROMs I had the same issue. In fact with the Infinity and Eclipse ROMs I tried a whole bunch of Wi Fi Tether versions but nothing fixed the problem.
With WiFi Tether, I unchecked the "disable wakelock" section, set the device profile to Samsung Captive, and tried with the softap option both checked and unchecked. Still no cigar.
I had this same problem when I used USB tethering with PDAnet, and later Easytether. I'm at a loss for what to do.
Any suggestions?
Why disable wakelock? Also, it should be Fascinate, not Captivate.

Sorry, I meant Fascinate. I've actually tried both and it had no effect. I don't disable wakelock. I uncheck the box that says "disable wakelock", so that wakelocks are enabled. Either way I've tried it both with the box checked and unchecked, and neither situation worked.

For what it's worth, i occasionally have to toggle airplane mode and restart the app. Could be a similar issue. Tethering is hit and miss, mostly hit tho.

Last night I set the app to run ttorrent (at very limited speeds) and when I woke up it had already disconnected completely, with hardly any data transferred. The thing is normally after it disconnects after a minute of running it will eventually reconnect after a minute. It keeps doing it over and over.
Is it only happening when you're doing torrents? What about just regular web browsing?

Actually I think I've FINALLY got it working. Holy mother of cows!!! I did a cleanup of my computer and apparently I had some weird programs like "Sendori" and "Tages" or whatever. I also uninstalled any programs I don't use anymore and restarted my comp.
First I tried PDAnet (actually uninstalled Easytether first, which had also failed to work properly beforehand), and suddenly USB tether was working. That had me running around my room in celebration. Then I tried Wi-Fi tether, and at first it worked, but then it suddenly disconnected and said "limited access" blah blah. So I restarted my phone and comp and tried again, and it worked!!!
Holy cow I hope it lasts. I'm on tweakstock right now but I'm contemplating if it's worth tempting fate to flash a new ROM. Tweakstock is just too slow for me. My phone worked infinitely better with Infinity ROM and Eclipse.
Sigh... well PDAnet works, but WiFi Tether still has issues. The disconnect/reconnect happens much more quickly, but ultimately it still prevents me from using wireless tether properly.
When I conduct a test on Pingtest.net while using PDAnet to connect my desktop, my overall grade is a B, but with WiFi tether it's a C+ or D, with the test unable to complete the packet loss test.
Could someone here please attempt to run a test on pingtest.net (it's an affiliate of speedtest.net) while on wifi tether and report their results?
Man, I don't know how to put this other than it sounds like you are doing something wrong. Pre 12 and 3.1beta7 stay connected and reconnect after manual disconnect perfectly.
Softap, fascinate must be used.
You should back up and try a new flash. I suggest stock deodexed and debloated ep4d with imo 4 kernel. Also, ping times on phone are identical when tethered or not. If you wanna know ping times, use an app like net ping or ping using terminal emulator. Whwn you ping, ping the address with www. I strongly suggest using www.intel.com or www.google.com
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
Pingtest.net has a "packet loss" test, which is relevant to the issue of a connection dropping. So a normal connection should get an A or B overall, with 0% packet loss.
Anyways I'll try the kernel and ROM combination you suggested.
Try using 3.1 beta 6. Haven't had any problems with this version

Mine works fine
Hello All,
Don't know why, but mine works fine with no modifications.
Rob
Actually I found a fix for it. Install and run Wifi Hot spot & USB tether lite from svtp and that causes Tue stop hot spot to work again.
