(Q) Root explorer R/W mount - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

First time using root explorer and I messed around with the top most directory R/W and R/O mounting option now i don't remember which it was originally set to. Does the R/O and R/W mounting in Root Explorer affect the way android runs and access files? or is it only to set read and write option in Root explorer?

Generally system should be ro

When in doubt reboot your phone, it'll go back to what it should be (RO)

Disabling/altering startup and shutdown sounds.

I read the tip in another thread about how to disable and/or change the Captivate's startup and shutdown sounds but cannot find the files mentioned on my phone. Does anyone have more detailed instructions on how to get rid of the annoying startup and shutdown sounds without using the SDK?
You must have root, then use a file manager (I use root explorer) and rename or delete the sound file:
/system/etc/PowerOn.wav
/system/media/audio/ui/shutdown.ogg

I keep getting an error saying I don't have the permissions to rename those files... I'm using several different file explorer apps and they all give me the same message
Do you have root access? If so change the filesystem to RW or use Root Explorer.

I didn't know how to change it to R/W so paid for the App, well worth the $3 thanks for the quick replies
Still unable to find the files. I am using the default file manager with View Hidden Files enabled and there is no /system directory.

You need to download a manager that has ROOT capabilities or you will not find them.

Easy with ConnectBot to turn off that annoying startup sound.
Connect to local system
su
(Confirm superuser request)
mv /system/etc/PowerOn.wav /system/etc/PowerOn.bak
exit
exit
Done!
Thanks for this LGSilva
I finally ponied up and bought Root Explorer. I found the files and renamed them and everything seems to be working.
Would love to find this info myself.
I cant get access from root explorer. Says read only even with hidden files shown. What am I missing?

Did you allow superuser permission when prompted?

[Q] copy over read only file

trying to move over the recovery file into the bin folder and replace the original using Root explorer. i get a can not read-file only. what am i doing wrong. trying to run the beta cwm3. please help
If you are using Root Explorer there is a R/W--R/O toggle. Once you are in the right folder use that button to switch modes. Make sure you switch back to r/o (read only) when you are done.

How come I cant paste new apps to system/app?

I'm assuming from your title that you did indeed change it from R/O to R/w, correct? If so, then why don't you just try installing the app? Is it a must that the app be located in the system/app folder? Try putting it in the data/app folder. Can u paste the file in but it doesn't show up in your app drawer? 9/10 it's because the permissions for the file are incorrect. Try that and let me know.
Do u have BusyBox installed? Because u need to to write to the system folder
Also make sure it says 'mounted as r/w' if not press the button that says 'MOUNT R/W'

Thats the thin when I enter system/app it dont give me the option to change r/o to rw
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA Premium App
U need to set r/w BEFORE u enter system folder

You have to update your root explorer if you have no option to set read write. You don't have to do it before you go into system. You can do it while there right at the top right. I forget to hit it all the time when editing my build prop.

Adb push w/o root!!!

Can't we push an apk to /system without having to root the device and mounting the system partition????
Found that there are some add ons available for SDK that doesn't need root.
P.S: Not for me, but my sisters phone. Shes pretty rough user and does not want to lose warranty.

I never tried it but i think it is possible bcoz i pulled whole /system folder from unrooted mobile
Just make sure you have proper driver installed

Pulling apps doesn't require root permissions but to push apps we need to change the system partition with RW access. I found somewhere on net that for nook HD and HD+ there are some plugins available for SDK through which they can modify system partition without the device being rooted. Is there any plugins available for other OEMS.

I had pushed fonts to /system partition of an unrooted mobile
i just used adb and pushed the files
didn't need anything else
hope apps can also be pushed :fingers-crossed:
