is there a list of extracted apk's please - HTC Desire S

Ive just got the desire s and a cheap disgo 6000 to use as an ereader and would really like to use the ereader from the phone if possible
thanks

This is the EReader app from my Desire S.
I am not sure that it is designed for larger screens but you can give it a shot.
I am not familiar with the eReader device that you have but I assume since it is running Android to have an access to the Market. If yes search there for a reader that suits you, my favorite is FBReader.

thanks will check them both out, the disgo doesnt have the market but that didnt really bother me as i know how to get stuff on to it without

Best free pdf viewer?

I am looking for a free pdf viewer. The one that comes with the Nexus One isnt cutting it for me. I need a free pdf viewer that can handle large files.

I write about technology, including the Nexus One, at my website.

So this doesnt really answer YOUR question, but you seem like someone who might be able to anser mine. I purchased an ebook and I can only view it with adobe digital edition or something like that. Everytime I try to open it on my phone, the only place I need it, it says I need a password. I emailed the ebook company and they never wrote me back. Its frustrating and dont really know where to go from here if anywhere at all. Sorry to change the subject but just seemed like the right time to present this proble,.
And I am sorry if this is in the wrong place.
repligo reader is good, but not free
I think the quickoffice one that comes with astro its quite good too

I have tried every single PDF viewer on the Market and they are all complete and utter garbage.
Luckily I was pleasantly surprised when I flashed the Desire ROM. Lo and behold, it had a PDF Viewer, one that was actually worth using!
I highly recommend switching to Desire, or trying to pull the files out to make it work on stock Android.
If I'm not mistaken quick office comes on most the roms that will run on the nexus. You just need a file browser that will call it up for you (astro or my fav SUFBS) seems to open fairly large pdf files for me. Not a lot of options but it's better than any I've found on the market. From the sounds of it the OP has already used quick office though. Anyone know of any apps not mentioned here already?
For the ebook file, maybe try aldiko, I didn't like it, but that's why I usually just look for rooks on pdf format to download.

Barnes & Noble App

I searched the hd2 forum, and searched on google and B&N's website with no luck...
Since this is an app i figured theme & app is better than general?
Has anyone else had any luck getting the new Barnes & Noble eReader app to work on the Tmo USA hd2??? I figured it wouldn't work till launch, but... its launch day and still no luck... but just checkin to see if its me or everyone...

Was gonna post this for the 2nd time tonight, but no need
Granted the B+N ereader looks nice but what's the point of it if you can't access ebooks you already own.
Dam I'd pay for a good ereader, all the ones I've tried just don't cut it. The only one that came close was HTC's ereader but that CAB compromised certain functions on my phone .
I just can't believe no one has produced a good multi ereader for this phone, it's a crying shame. It's a good job I have R-Type to play in my down time .
Use Freda with Calibre. A very nice combination. Freda accepts the epub-format. Calibre converts most of the other formats to epub.

i agree. it's stupid that it can support any means except windows mobile. why even include it on the hd2 if it doesn't work?
Luckily for me, I don't have a history of purchases from other e-Readers, so I'm not too concerned about the cost/benefit analysis there... I'll just hope that B&N decides to carryover their application to other platforms and perhaps offers updates in the future.

Android Market is Horrible

As a new Asus Transformer owner and first time Android Market customer I have to say that I am utterly disappointed with the current state of the Android Market. The android market ap is a joke. The website is a little better, but desperately needs a better way to filer aps by tablet/non-tablet or hd/sd aps.
There is no legitimate reason that the market couldn't have a specific section dedicated solely to tablets. Or at least better filter/sort functions that allow you to filter in a more effective way. I was going to post a list of what is bad about the marketplace, but there is just too much. I'm sure that everyone who owns a honeycomb tablet is well familiar with the problem(s) by now. Anyway, just wanted to vent. /rant
Use appbrain (google it), it's much nicer and lets you filter your search.
see here for compatible tablet apps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032381

There actually sholdnt be a tabletsection at all. If a dev programs oroperly their app will work fine on any size screen. Thats the benefit of the way the xml layout in the sdk work. Locations all become relative. You say x is next to y andbelow z. Then let the device sort it out.

Not necessarily true, especially as Honeycomb introduces new layout elements that many app developers want to and should take advantage of to make their apps more tablet friendly. It might still all end up in the same APK in the end, but the developer still should do some tablet specific work to make it more user friendly. It would still be nice to know which APKs have been "tablet-optimized".
They do have a "Featured Tablet Apps" section, which as far as I can tell is just a list of all/most of the APKs that have been optimized for tablets.
I thought some of these issues were fixed with 3.1 according to xoom owners.
I think it's because they don't want people to see how few apps there are optimised for tablets.

+1 internets
I agree
There should be a tablet filter. Even amazon apps suck at it. I download some apps and it FC on me.
You say all apps should work on tablet? Well that's not the case for many apps so there should be some kind of distinction. But, I hear some problems will be fixed in 3.1.
The pop down add won't be popping down anymore, it will just be there when you open it up, more catagories, and when you view an app and go back, it suppose to remember your location.
Be nice to be able to add reviews, but I didn't hear anything about that.
as a poor uesr from china pr
i need an app like market access lol
No no no... there is nothing about an Android app that says "I'm a tablet app" unless it just happens to be written for _only_ the Gingerbread API level (and that will be false the second the next version of Android comes out) which is pretty bad practice.
Using 3.0 classes is possible via reflection while remaining compatible back to 1.6, given that you can have a specific layout for x-large screens you can use 3.0 layout elements there even if your app targets a lower API level. Fragments are available all the way back to 1.6 now.
There is no "Tablet version" switch to detect, nor should there be.
It is up to the devs themselves to support the use cases they want to target, not specific devices, with freedom comes responsibility.
there should't be a tablet filter..android is different from iOS in terms of the layout design and ideally all apps should just run just fine on hc.
I remember reading that Google were going to put extra layers/levels into the current market to provide better touch browse/navigation - which might be nice.
But I don't really have any problems with the current one and the other sites do a good job at simplifying searches anyway.
It will never please everybody, but will continue to get better I am sure.

It's not whether or not they run fine, it's whether or not they are optimized for a tablet, like the CNN app. So I agree, a filter for apps that are tablet-optimized is a must. Until then, I just rely on the Featured Tablet Apps to see if anything new has been added.

yes ideally they should, but theyre phone apps. When they do work correctly, they just stretch. Everybody makes of the ipad saying its a giant ipod touch, but the apps that are optimized for it look amazing. So yes there should be a tablet filter.

Best Word Processor?

What is the best word processor designed for Honeycomb thus far that gives many of the features that MS Word also gives, such as formatting options, spell check, ect.
I'm basically looking for the most complete world processor out there for Honeycomb.
Probably Polaris.. comes with the TF
Documents to GO has been my go-to app since the beginning.
It works flawlessly. Although Polaris looks a lot nicer.
Polaris looks the best but I last I tried I couldn't open a word or spreadsheet document created with it in openoffice or libreoffice (free MS office alternatives), which ruins it for me. I don't know whether they have updated or fixed this issue since I last checked..
Ohh, shoot, I haven't tried that yet. Hmm, I use openoffice on my laptop too, are you saving it in openoffice format or .doc?
I want to save them as .doc files so that I can easily switch between working on my PC with MS Word, and my TF with what ever word processor I end up using.

Wondering this as well. I want something as close as to Office as possible
Check out the link in my signature. Trust me, you are not the first one to ask this question. What is not in the review are the online programs like Google Docs and Microsoft Live Office. Both are pretty cool and the latter looks almost exactly like the real office programs!
What about the new thinkfree app?

This is a very neat UI! I just bought it and if I ever find time I will include it in my comparison. It definitely has a lot of potential although it has many shortcomings regarding formatting and TrueType interpretation. PowerPoint ("Show") seems to be affected in particular.

Since you are the guru on this, please, tested and let us know how is it and what is your opinion.
I was looking at it last night and was close to buy the app, but I prefer for you to let us know what you think.
Thank you
This post is very helpful and seems related.
Also: no one has suggested just using Microsoft Word on your desktop/laptop via VPN. I know a couple of people like to do that.
My plan is to write documents using either the onboard application or Google Docs (depending on which app works better and if I am connected), then use something like TeamViewer or Logmein to do the nitty-gritty formatting.
Thank you for the compliment but unfortunately I don't have as much time as I used to I'll do me best though since I want to know myself! I'll update my comparison thread once I did it!

I've tried a few word processing programs as I've looked for something as good as MS Word or Open Office. So far, I've not found anything that can replace these programs. All of them lack certain key features - including google docs, polaris, quick office HD, documents 2 go. I haven't tried thinkoffice yet, but it doesn't look much better. I just now tried MS Live Office, but it wouldn't work on the tab - i got a page that said I needed to use MS Explorer or Firefox to access it. It looks like the most full featured option, but unless we can get past this browser limit, it doesn't matter on the TF.
Polaris office is the best so far, though I haven't tried to open the documents in open office, so I can't speak to that problem. I used QuickOffice HD up until the 3.2 update because copy/paste in polaris was broken.
help with polaris
I need help. I am a new tf owner and I can not get polaris to work. I have tried two google and one box accounts. When I go to set up the account I get an error message saying that it can not connect to the Web server. I was able to connect to one google account once then I added files to it and could no longer connect, same error message. I even tried creating a new box account and that did not work. Any help would be great

No Movie Studio Vid Editor on my GT6210 (US version)??

Hello,
Has anyone found a good alternative to Movie Studio? I've been using it on my Iconia A500 (10in. screen) and find it worth having. So other than the smaller screen, is there an oficial reason why we 7.0Plus owners didn't get this "standard" app.... or did everyone but me get it?
I've just downloaded a couple .apk's posted here to try to side load the app, but I guess I'm wondering if my GT6210 should have come with it in the first place.
Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Don't worry I'm on the same boat as you...have original tab my 7.0 Plus is on the way as we speak. Movie Studio is a huge improvement that I loved in the other Honeycomb tabs. I'll be sure to update you on if mine came with it. In the meantime, were you able to install a Movie Studio apk you've gotten your hands on?

Yes , I was able to install the "deodex" version from this thread http:// forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=990465&page=2 - look for the file in post #12. But it didn't quite work for me. The UI doesn't adjust for the smaller screen (though the lower screen resolution is most likely the issue), so the video playback window blocks the top timeline and half of each control on either side. This made it basically unusable for me- the only good news is the app is otherwise working --clips imported, drag and scrubbing worked, imported clips played in that oversized preview window- without crashing. So if the UI could be tuned with a little hack-fu......
Anyway, hope this helps ya in some way. Please let me know if you find a solution. Thanks!
I just installed this app -AndroMedia https://market.android.com/details?id=com.techcatmobile.andromedia&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS50ZWNoY2F0bW9iaWxlLmFuZHJvbWVkaWEiXQ.. and so far I like what I see! It's free and looks like it can do the job. I've only done a quick test, but this may even be better than Movie Studio - though it has a small add at the bottom of the screen and the UI lacks Movie Studios modern look, but in some ways this one is more intuitive.
Worth checking out for sure!

Well I'm not sure if you want to install another app to do this, but there are multiple apps which allow you to "adjust" the resolution of your screen which should allow you to view the complete app. I know I saw a nice looking app for this purpose but unfortunately cannot remember it off the top of my head....I've also tried AndroMedia on my original tab which I have until my new tab comes tomorrow but it just FCs but am happy to try it again with the new dual-core! Hopefully we can get this figured out...just one of those apps I reallllly want!!

There are apps that will adjust my screen rez? I'm guessing they must simulate the different resolution, or are they tweaks/hacks? I've heard of the tweaks that change the dpi or pixel density, but none that change screen rez. I'd be most appreciative if you can recommend any reliable ones.
AndroMedia works fine on my GTab 7.0+- no FC's ... yet. Maybe by the time we get this video editor app figured out, Samsung will release a version that works with the smaller tabs, lol. I'm amazed at the lack of any real alternatives to Movie Studio.... isn't anyone using Android devices to shoot video? Or are they not doing anything more complex than 1 take shots...? Not to rub anyones nose in it, but check out what Avid just released for the iPad- http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/avid-studio/id491113378?mt=8 better than iMovie and will export working projects to Avid express! I just started working with it (I need to use iOS and Android for work) and have to say it's pretty amazing. Come on 'droid!
Anyway, thanks again for your input on this issue!
