[Q] I can't install any apps! URGENT! - HTC Inspire 4G

I'm trying to install some non-market apk's so I tried both of the answers listed in the sticky thread for sideloading (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033353), but neither of them work.
I tried the Sideload Wonder Machine but it pops up an error saying Device Not Ready. I've already installed the drivers and my phone is recognized in ddms.bat when I tried that.
I also tried Option 2 where it says to run a command prompt in the tools folder and type adb devices and then adb install (apks name), which returns "adb is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."
I bought this phone on eBay and the seller has a 24-hour return policy so I really need to get this working soon because if I can't install apps the phone is basically useless and I'll have to return it. Can someone help me?

What rom are u on? Is the phone rooted? Soff? If you are completely stock and still have froyo 2.2 just update it to gingerbread Wichita already includes the install unknown sources.

There would be nothing gained by returning the phone to the seller, as there is nothing wrong with the phone itself. Sideloading is a software feature, not hardware related.
Just root the damn thing and throw a custom ROM on it. Every rooted ROM allows sideloading by default. Or, as marsdta said, if you want to stick with the stock ROM, just wait for the pending OTA update (or maybe you can force the update) and you'll be good to go.

I'd rather not have to install a custom rom if possible. Don't really have time to research it and I'd probably rush through it and risk breaking the phone.
How do I get the official update?

The official updates can be found from Home -> Menu -> Settings -> AT&T Software Update -> HTC Wi-Fi software update -> Check now. (I think I got that right...)
Alternatively, HTC's own support page for the Inspire 4G should allow you to update manually.
But to be perfectly honest, rooting isn't so hard. I thought about it way too much before just jumping into it and everything is going great so far. Attn1's Hack Kit is really concise and well-written (as long as you read the EFFEN MANUAL) and automates like ninety percent of the job. Do it if you can, you won't regret it.

Thanks, I installed the 2.3.3 update and it's great. I'll look into rooting when I have some time.

Am I rooted?

Hi, I got an unlocked UK Vodaphone Magic yesterday and after much reading around on the site decided to take the plunge and root my phone today. I followed the easy guide in the Wiki (Step 1) and flashed what I later read as to be the wrong rom for my phone but luckily it looks as though all is well. As far as I know everything went okay (no errors or anything My SPL thing said .0004 but now is .2005.)
The phone still boots fine as it did (maybe a little slower) but all functions still work okay. I downloaded a bluetooth app for sending and recieving on the marketplace but when I click the option to turn on recieving within the app, it says my phone is still required to be rooted. Is there an way I can test if it's definately rooted? I have tried a search, but can't seem to find anything relevant. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
**Just to add to this, one point when I was following the guide and got to step 12, after doing that I typed in "adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-new.img" in the command prompt, nothing happened to the phone and the command prompt line didn't say anything at all it just went to the next line so I could type again (at the same point it didn't mention any errors). Don't know if thats normal or not, but I tried it twice and carried on following the rest of the steps.
All normal Leviathon. Try this:

2. Connect Ur Phone Via USB Cable

4. Choose Appropriate options..
5. Rebooting Not Recommended...(UR WISH)
getting a device not found doing this
Looks like mine isnt rooted properly either, yet I can flash roms etc??? The cpu widget is giving an application error when trying to run it....
You can flash ROMs because you got root and then flashed a modified SPL. Unless the ROM you flash has root like the hero v1.1+ ROM then you have to get root again.

Thanks for your help, just about to try the Enable-SU.exe thing. Can't find CPU Overclocker Widget on market place (search reveals nothing), tried another one called OverclockingWidget, but that won't work, because I need root.
Installed Enable-SU.exe fine, this allowed me to enable the recieving of bluetooth files, but whenever i recieve a file of any kind, it gets to 100% and then the phone resets itself? Seperatly from this, I thought I'd browse the superuser permissions icon to see what was in it, there was one thing with a + next to it which I clicked (thinking I could edit it or something) and now it's dissapeared, don't know if this matters or not.
Further EDIT - The more I'm reading the more confused I'm getting (it doesn't take me much), but I was trying to find something on the Wiki on how to flash a rom now (assuming my phone is rooted?) and I stumbled upon a link to the SPL file that I am now running, said something about flashing the radio first? That wasn't mentioned in the guide I followed, should I have done this? Also, If my phone is rooted, where do I go from here? I can't seem to find anything relating to how I now flash new roms apart from something in the Wiki about using the terminal app to gain root again? Sorry for all the questions, I'm sure I'm confusing things when they don't need to be.
My Fastboot Menu thingy reads like so :
Sapphire PVT 32B ENG S-OFF H
HBOOT-1.33.2005 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-10
RADIO-2.22.19.261

Cheers for response. Im confused some apps work and some give an application error. The ones that work a box pops up asking for root access which i allow and in superuser app it is logged in there. Am wondering why some apps arent working and some are? Is there a simple way to check root status from a terminal on the phone?
P.S am using nk02's ion r5 rom. Have also tried fatal1ty's hero v3 but flashed back to this.
Okay I think I've made some more progress in reading, when I took the steps to root my magic nothing was wiped by the way? (Photos, settings etc) Is that also normal? aside from the issues I'm having with the bluetooth rebooting after recieving files and not able to find the CPU overclocker. And this possible Radio issue, I want to try the Ion R5 rom and then later on try the Hero Black rom, so I just name the resulting zip as "update", enter the recovery menu (power on + home) and select update from the list and this will flash the new rom? If I then wanted to try a new rom later, I just do the same (rename the file to update) and re-flash it over the top? If someone could verify I'm on the right tracks or if this incorrect I would be eternally gratefull.
Hi, I've in cmd:
PHP:
uid=0<root> gid=0<root>
So I should be root, but some root-apps doesn't work...is this maybe because they're not ready for cupcake? e.g. OverclockWidget - doesnt't start!
Ah, I have the app "Overclock" I can set the MHz and looks like it works, but when i go back to the app, there are no MHz shown?! Mhhh...I am really root?

Is the app called "Overclock"? or "Open Overclock"? I just tried Open Overclock and that asked me for root access, the program runs (although I have not tried any of the settings because I dont know what I'm doing), but I would assume the phone is rooted if it prompts for root access to run and works? That's what I'm basing mine on anyway.

No it was: Overclock
I've tried OpenOverclock, but there's no hint or message that I have no root...but it looks not too good
Do you have the android sdk and adb installed? so you can check it by typing: "adb shell id" in cmd/shell. Check that the USB driver works with "adb devices".
And try SetCPU, it's MUCH BETTER!

USB works fine
I'll give Set CPU a try
EDIT - Have tried Set CPU, although I have no idea what I'm doing, what is some good safe settings?
I assume that I am deffo rooted then, so how would I use other roms now? Just rename them to update and use the boot menu thing to flash them?
Okay I read up on the CPU thing, tried all settings, doesn't seem to make any difference in speed to mine (even on max settings), i.e reading tweets with twitdroid is still pretty laggy - I guess it doesn't work with all models then?

[Q] eMatic oem folder

Hey xda. Sorry if this post has been misplaced, but I noticed there is no device forum for the tablet I am asking about today, and that is understandable. My girlfriend recently got an eMatic eGlide Pro II XL tablet for her birthday and it is running Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3. I noticed that it had a lot of bloatware and no google play store on it, and she wanted the play store, so I rooted the device for her and installed the play store and it works like a charm. The only problem I seem to have run into is this read only folder called "oem". The path for this partition is /oem/ and there are a few bloatware apps in there. For some reason though, I cannot edit or delete anything in that partition as it says it is read only even though i am using the root functions of ES File Explorer. I am able to modify other system apps though root explorer. I even tried using terminal emulator commands to remove the items but it still didn't work. Is there a way I can mount this folder as read/write? If I can, that would be a blessing, as I could delete the crapware that came with the tablet and the old version of YouTube that is buggy and not updateable thanks to being placed in the oem folder. Thanks for reading all this guys, I know it's a wall of text, haha.
Ematic: What is the browser?
What is the browser that is install from factory.. on Ematic devices ..as it is not "Chrome" [It almost looks like Dolphin], when I tried to do a regular .apk install of "Chrome" from the Google store it dies which almost tells me that it need to be pushed into the device. So am I correct that I need to find a downloadable .apk of "Chrome" for Android 4.0.3 ?

How did you root the tablet? it seems there are several Ematic tablets being sold at wal-mart and I think people would like to know how you rooted it. (I know I would.)

I used a tool called Root with Restore by Bin4ry. It took me a couple times. The first time I did it, all it managed to do was slow the tablet down, then i just performed a factory reset and tried again using the same process until it worked. It didn't take all that long. The hardest part is getting the adb drivers to recognize the tablet. I will attach my adb drivers so you don't have to go through all the rigamarole.
Navigate to wherever your android sdk folder is. Mine is at C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk
Within the android-sdk folder, look for extras, then google, then usb_driver. Make a backup of everything in your usb_driver folder, just in case.
Next just extract the contents of the zip I attached to this post. Make sure USB debugging is on, and plug it in. It should be recognized assuming there isn't some other problem i haven't encountered or forgot to mention.
Once your computer recognizes the adb interface for your tablet, use the Root with Restore tool until it works.

I'll bet that you can get it rooted. You may have to edit those drivers though since I don't think my girlfriend's tablet isn't the same as the one you mentioned.
If the drivers I posted don't work for you, then open up "android_winusb.inf" from that zip file in your favorite text editor.
Somewhere under the "[Google.NTx86]" and "[Google.NTamd64]" sections, add this:
;eMatic egs005
Remember where you put those, cause what goes under those entries is the hardware ID of your tablet. You can get that by going under device manager and right clicking on your tablet, if it is unrecognized it should have a yellow triangle on it or something like that. Go to properties and go to the details tab, then from the drop down menu, select hardware IDs. In my case, two came up. Just pick one. If that one ends up not working later, use the one you didn't try.
Now, your entries should look like this:
;eMatic egs005
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, (your hardware ID)
Next, try to update the drivers on your tablet via device manager. Right click on your tablet like we did last time, and click properties. Go to the driver tab, and hit the update driver button. You'll have to manually navigate to where your drivers are. Select the folder where you extracted the zip to (make sure you have the edited file in there!) and follow the procedure to update the driver.
Next, open up an adb window and type in adb devices. If you have something showing up, congrats! You should be able to try the root tool now. As always, be careful!
eglide pro ll xl
I just bought the eglide pro ll xl also. From what I have read and done to my tab so far, it is already rooted from the factory. It sounds like a lot of the ematic tabs are. I've been researching different operating systems to put on my tab but there isn't anything that says it is specifically for mine. They pretty much just list the types of tablets the ROMS will work for. The question I have is what type of tablet is this. Allwinner a10? LY F1? TREQ? I would really like to know this and a good way to back up my current system so if I screw it up I can go back and try again.

I didn't add most of those entries in the drivers file, it originated as a sort of "fix all" driver that was posted on xda to connect many many types of different devices to adb without hassle. I added a few of the entries using the hardware ID method I described above to accommodate some less popular devices that my friends and family asked me to root.
I think I heard talk somewhere about custom roms for the eGlide, but I have no clue how to flash them, and seeing as how that tablet wasn't mine, I did not want to try to flash one and brick it, lol. I couldn't find any recoveries or any other tool to flash things to it. If you do find a way, all I can say is be careful.
As far as backing up goes, root with restore supports unrooting as well. I never performed that function though, since root hasn't done anything bad for the tablets I put them on, haha. I'm not certain there is an easy backup method since as I said a second ago, no custom recoveries. To be safe, I would recommend a factory data reset before attempting any rooting/unrooting of this tablet.
I hope I helped with my feedback.

I actually installed CWM 6.0.1.2 by Flowish on to my tab and it works great except for the process he has to get in to the recovery. I have to use the terminal emulator to launch it. That's why I am leery about installing a different ROM. If I can't get the thing to boot up properly I then can't get to the terminal emulator to get to recovery to restore my backup. I'm still searching and learning though. I'll figure it out eventually.

Check if there's fastboot for this tablet. There's a fastboot command to boot into the recovery. If not, then I would just not flash a Rom

If you're running titanium then that means you're rooted, right? If you're rooted you should NOT (ie. Never) take a factory ota update. It has the potential to brick your phone.
What ota was it?

read this thread

"1. If your phone does not have Terminal Emulator installed, you will need to use ADB. Download and install the Android SDK platform-tools for your platform. This is a bit non-trivial as it requires the installation of the Android SDK, however, you can find a guide for installing adb here. After installing, open a command prompt and navigate to the "platform-tools" folder within the SDK, where adb is stored. If you need additional help on this, simply ask in this thread."
That site with the guide to install adb has terrible instructions so I gave up.

Dude you are making this way too difficult lol...install terminal emulator from the playstore and run the nv backup command...then never worry about losing imei again.
For Terminal Emulator: The actual "beef" of the command is the "reboot nvbackup" line. Therefore, if you have Terminal Emulator installed, you can just run the command straight off your phone. Enter these two commands from the app:
Code:
su
reboot nvbackup
I had the same problem. Ended up using odin to push the latest stock software which included the update. Now to see if I still get the no sim error. Realizing after all this time I really didn't need to root.

This is without a doubt the reason the update failed (unless there are multiple reasons). If you unfreeze the apps, it should install as expected.

Yes it isnt the only thing that can cause an update to fail. But since he already stated that he had frozen some apps, then it is known that the check will fail and the update wont proceed.
If you don't know why it failed. download to OTA. And when it prompts you to install, say you'll do it later. Now extract the update file from your /cache/ directory. (That's where it was on Motorola's, I think its /cache/fota/ on our S3 ). Copy/move that file to the root of your SD card. Reboot into stock recovery and flash it. Watch the update when it fails it will call out specifically what went wrong. When you let the system automatically do it you don't get that luxury. If you initiate the update on your own through stock recovery though, you are granted that key piece of Intel as to what it didn't like.
Freezing anything in titanium will fail an OTA automatically. It checks system files to make sure certain ones are there, especially bloatware. Also having custom recovery will fail you.
As was said if your rooted you should never both with OTA anymore. If you're coming from a motorola like I did it is hard to grasp that at first. We needed official OTA to update the kernel. So you almost had to do it. Now though. We have an unlocked bootloader here. You can flash any kernel you feel. So OTA are meaningless for us on the S3. The devs steal all the good code and bits and put it in their ROMs and leave out the garbage. No reason to need official OTA anymore then unless you truly want to

For Terminal Emulator: The actual "beef" of the command is the "reboot nvbackup" line. Therefore, if you have Terminal Emulator installed, you can just run the command straight off your phone. Enter these two commands from the app:
Code:
su
reboot nvbackup

Seriously..... That was easy lol. What's the point of step 1
Since I never read the next lines that says " If your phone is rooted and has Terminal Emulator installed, you don't need to do any of this. Simply open up the Terminal Emulator and go to step 2.", I never completed backing up the IMEI probably because I didn't know the Terminal Emulator was an playstore app.... Now I got a backup, I'm unlocked, running a custom rom. Thanks a lot man. You helped a lot.

[Q] FileMate Clear 7" T720 tablet

Does anyone know if Z4Root will work on this tablet? Thanks!
I've been looking for one for 3 days now, I tryed onclickroot and z4root or something like that,, cant find anything Anyone please help!!
I'm still waiting for my tablet to be delivered...I'm gonna try SuperOneClick (crosses fingers)
I got one of these for my daughter for xmas. I spent a few days trying to root it with no luck. I'm not intimately familiar with android (some unix experience), but I tried all the options I could find for rooting Allwinner a10 devices. At first I ran into problems with adb unable to recognize the device for most one-click methods. I downloaded the android tools and was able to connect with the included adb. After studying the scripts, they all use the "adb root" command to gain root access on the device and copy the necessary files. Unfortunately, this command fails using adb from the tools. At first I thought this was due to my adb version, but after doing some research I think it is actually due to the device kernel. I believe it requires reflashing or some exploit to be able to gain root. I was able to install root explorer and I can browse all the necessary directories but I can't modify or copy the necessary files into them. Busybox told me there was an older version installed, but wouldn't let me install a newer version (again I think due to the permissions). Also, superuser would say it installed but the su binary did not show up on the bin directory. As the necessary directories are all owned by root, I couldn't figure out a way to modify the permissions...
I wound up returning the FileMate and got a Lenovo IdeaTab. Got that rooted in no time.
sorry i never saw this post i've bought 2 of these and i rooted them,
i wish i could get a better build for them though, too many app crashes and the internet connectivity sucks
i used a method by Bin4ry called root with restore, v17 worked any ways i have the zip if you would like it

FileMate Clear T720
Thank you very much for being the only person ever to have posted in regards to this tablet. I just got mine for christmas and have been trying to get it rooted. I've tried a lot of those one-click methods, and I've even tried this Bin4ary method. but it just hangs up on "daemon started sucessfully*"
Can you please direct me to the filemate drivers (if needed)
also, I have usb debugging endable, allowing 3rd party (not secure) files enabled. and pulling my hair out (enabled).
Thanks again.
Also, I'm running windows 7 and 8, (((maybe i should try win7))) hmm. i'll get back to you on that. Anyhow, any advice would be greatly appreciated, since returning it doesn't sound very fun.

I laughed so hard. ok your going to have to install drivers by force,
first off do you happen to have android sdk installed? if you don't there is another way but its going to sound weird,
if you do have the android SDK installed:
1. go to your computer manager (by opening explorer, right click on the "computer" group on the left column and select manager)
2. look for any unrecognized item that appears, ( it will most likely be labeled "Clear" with a faded icon and a "?" sign on top
3. right click and choose "Update drivers", it will give you options, choose "Browse my computer for driver software", another option screen will show,
4. at the bottom of the window there will be an option that says "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
5. on the screen that appears there should be an option that says "ADB Interface", choose this
6. choose "Google, Inc.">"ADB Testing Interface version x.x.x.x" (I chose version 2.1.0.0)
that should do it next time you plug in the tablet try running ddms or open the cmd and type in "adb devices" (assuming you have adb installed) and it should show.
if this helps just hit the thanks button
[edit] I am running windows 8 btw [/edit]
ADB interface doesn't show up
Thank you very much for getting me farther, however I dont see ADB interface. I'm looking into it right now. I just re-installed the sdk drivers and will keep at it.
BTW, is it even worth doing this? the main reason I want to do it, is so i can connect my ps3 remote via bluetooth, and possibly a little overclocking. Have you had any luck OC it?
Thanks again Much appreciated:good:

open up SDK manager and go to Extras>"Google USB Drivers"
also install everything in the "Android 4.0 (API 14)" section, I have other options installed if this still doesn't work.
its worth it just for the extra stuff that root comes with like titanium backup, but you cant over clock, if you go any higher than 1200 MHz it will lock up and you have to force it to reset.

Click Here to download ADB universal drivers. they should work better than the google USB drivers.

Rooted With Kingo
I just bought one of these cheap to play with and used Kingo to root it. Worked first time, no problem. The only issue I am having is that the SuperSu binaries are failing to update but root is still working. Titanium is working and Root Explorer so I can debloat. Hope that helps is anyone is still trying to use these

please tell me where in the world you got the Kingo root?
As far as being unable to update binaries, try to find a custom recovery and install. From there, you can inject them via su-binary update.zip and bam!

http://www.kingoapp.com/android-root.htm
That is the link for the Kingo site. The first time I saw it on here there was some question about whether it was safe becase it is not open source and used a Chinese SuperSu app. I felt safe using it on a tablet because I do no banking on it or anything, but the newest posts I have seen are that Kingo is safe. Hope that helps. And if you know where to find a custom recovery that will work with this app please let me know.

[Q] [noobish] Rooting with windrivers or LiveCD

I've read the Ace guide, researched unlocking bootloaders, Rooting, flashing ROMs, and have more questions, but I'll start here.
At the risk of stepping on the grass, I have been researching the rooting of an Inspire I bought used. The phone is already SIM unlocked. However, I haven't found clear answers to a couple basic questions.
1. I'm running windows XP Pro, when I installed the Easy Ace Root Tool windrivers I get a message that says I need WMP 11.
Don't have it, I use VLC.
When I plug in the USB to phone I can browse the files on the SD card in debug mode if I select mount as Disk Drive.
All I can tell is that my USB drivers are loading the phone. What should I see if the windriver is working properly, and can run the root tool from XP?
Note: I do have a new process called PassThruSvr.exe running.
2. The other option is the LiveCD. I've used Ubuntu in the past and have a couple Live CDs around.
What is the procedure for Easyacerootool with the LiveCD (minus the windrivers)? Same?
All I came up with here was http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741824 which isn't applicable to the Inspire.
Thank you for your time and patience. And holy crap, a ton of great work.

WMP has nothing to do with ADB nor Rooting. I have never heard that. Uninstall all the HTC software first and then with the phone unplugged install the driver in the tools folder.
Anyway, the Root Tool won't work in Linux but you can do the process manually.

Okay thanks. FYI, when I install the HTC windriver there is a message box that pops up "..to access files and folders... install WMP 11".
I should have made it clear that I did follow the procedure as stipulated, and with the phone unplugged.
What I found after running EasyAceRoot.cmd, it verifies the connection with my phone. So it looks like its working. Haven't rooted it yet, but will give it a go later.
Thanks
Done, thanks
Thanks for the help glevitan,
I ran the easyrootool, and there was some problem with the SuperSU flash. I re-ran the tool and re-flashed just the SuperSU and all seemed good.
I tried to start Titanium BU and it hung at "asking for rights". I went back and tried to open Super SU and it wasn't responding.
Removed Titanium BU and reflashed Super SU. Super SU seems to be okay now. after I reinstalled Titanium BU everything was working.
Then, I rebooted it again to make sure, and Titanium BU went back to being hung at "Asking for Root..". I do get notification that it has been granted super user permission.
Dunno, any thoughts?

I'm going to post this as a new thread if I can't figure it out. The device or SuperSu doesn't allow root access. Exploring options

RESOLVED - Issue seems to have been resolved. The only thing I did of significance was to boot into CWM recovery and run "Fix permissions". Titanium backup and other root required apps will now run, even after I reboot.
Jees, talk about a steep learning curve.
