Am I rooted? - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

Hi, I got an unlocked UK Vodaphone Magic yesterday and after much reading around on the site decided to take the plunge and root my phone today. I followed the easy guide in the Wiki (Step 1) and flashed what I later read as to be the wrong rom for my phone but luckily it looks as though all is well. As far as I know everything went okay (no errors or anything My SPL thing said .0004 but now is .2005.)
The phone still boots fine as it did (maybe a little slower) but all functions still work okay. I downloaded a bluetooth app for sending and recieving on the marketplace but when I click the option to turn on recieving within the app, it says my phone is still required to be rooted. Is there an way I can test if it's definately rooted? I have tried a search, but can't seem to find anything relevant. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

**Just to add to this, one point when I was following the guide and got to step 12, after doing that I typed in "adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-new.img" in the command prompt, nothing happened to the phone and the command prompt line didn't say anything at all it just went to the next line so I could type again (at the same point it didn't mention any errors). Don't know if thats normal or not, but I tried it twice and carried on following the rest of the steps.

All normal Leviathon. Try this:
Note: To Test, Just Try Using CPU Overclocker Widget(Its Free) From The Market Before & After Using This... u ll Notice the Change
Steps:
1. Download The Install-Enable-SU-By-Sangeet.exe & Extract Any where By Double Clicking It.
New Fixed Download Link: http://android-latest-build-images.googlecode.com/files/Install-Enable-SU.exe
2. Connect Ur Phone Via USB Cable
3. Run The Install-Enable-SU .bat File.
4. Choose Appropriate options..
5. Rebooting Not Recommended...(UR WISH)

getting a device not found doing this
Looks like mine isnt rooted properly either, yet I can flash roms etc??? The cpu widget is giving an application error when trying to run it....

You can flash ROMs because you got root and then flashed a modified SPL. Unless the ROM you flash has root like the hero v1.1+ ROM then you have to get root again.

Thanks for your help, just about to try the Enable-SU.exe thing. Can't find CPU Overclocker Widget on market place (search reveals nothing), tried another one called OverclockingWidget, but that won't work, because I need root.
Installed Enable-SU.exe fine, this allowed me to enable the recieving of bluetooth files, but whenever i recieve a file of any kind, it gets to 100% and then the phone resets itself? Seperatly from this, I thought I'd browse the superuser permissions icon to see what was in it, there was one thing with a + next to it which I clicked (thinking I could edit it or something) and now it's dissapeared, don't know if this matters or not.
Further EDIT - The more I'm reading the more confused I'm getting (it doesn't take me much), but I was trying to find something on the Wiki on how to flash a rom now (assuming my phone is rooted?) and I stumbled upon a link to the SPL file that I am now running, said something about flashing the radio first? That wasn't mentioned in the guide I followed, should I have done this? Also, If my phone is rooted, where do I go from here? I can't seem to find anything relating to how I now flash new roms apart from something in the Wiki about using the terminal app to gain root again? Sorry for all the questions, I'm sure I'm confusing things when they don't need to be.
My Fastboot Menu thingy reads like so :
Sapphire PVT 32B ENG S-OFF H
HBOOT-1.33.2005 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-10
RADIO-2.22.19.261

Cheers for response. Im confused some apps work and some give an application error. The ones that work a box pops up asking for root access which i allow and in superuser app it is logged in there. Am wondering why some apps arent working and some are? Is there a simple way to check root status from a terminal on the phone?
P.S am using nk02's ion r5 rom. Have also tried fatal1ty's hero v3 but flashed back to this.

Okay I think I've made some more progress in reading, when I took the steps to root my magic nothing was wiped by the way? (Photos, settings etc) Is that also normal? aside from the issues I'm having with the bluetooth rebooting after recieving files and not able to find the CPU overclocker. And this possible Radio issue, I want to try the Ion R5 rom and then later on try the Hero Black rom, so I just name the resulting zip as "update", enter the recovery menu (power on + home) and select update from the list and this will flash the new rom? If I then wanted to try a new rom later, I just do the same (rename the file to update) and re-flash it over the top? If someone could verify I'm on the right tracks or if this incorrect I would be eternally gratefull.

Hi, I've in cmd:
PHP:
uid=0<root> gid=0<root>
So I should be root, but some root-apps doesn't work...is this maybe because they're not ready for cupcake? e.g. OverclockWidget - doesnt't start!
Ah, I have the app "Overclock" I can set the MHz and looks like it works, but when i go back to the app, there are no MHz shown?! Mhhh...I am really root?

Is the app called "Overclock"? or "Open Overclock"? I just tried Open Overclock and that asked me for root access, the program runs (although I have not tried any of the settings because I dont know what I'm doing), but I would assume the phone is rooted if it prompts for root access to run and works? That's what I'm basing mine on anyway.

No it was: Overclock
I've tried OpenOverclock, but there's no hint or message that I have no root...but it looks not too good
Do you have the android sdk and adb installed? so you can check it by typing: "adb shell id" in cmd/shell. Check that the USB driver works with "adb devices".
And try SetCPU, it's MUCH BETTER!

USB works fine
I'll give Set CPU a try
EDIT - Have tried Set CPU, although I have no idea what I'm doing, what is some good safe settings?
I assume that I am deffo rooted then, so how would I use other roms now? Just rename them to update and use the boot menu thing to flash them?

Okay I read up on the CPU thing, tried all settings, doesn't seem to make any difference in speed to mine (even on max settings), i.e reading tweets with twitdroid is still pretty laggy - I guess it doesn't work with all models then?

Simpler instructions for installing modified recovery image

Here are some instructions for installing JesusFreke's modified recovery image. You have to install the modified recovery image before you can install modified firmwares. These instructions are simpler than the existing ones because they don't require the use of adb or telnet.
Firstly, you need to already have firmware version RC29 or RC7. To check which version you have go to "Settings" and then "About phone". At the bottom you will see a "Build number" which will include "RC" and then a number. If you have RC30 or RC8 then you need to downgrade. THAT WILL WIPE ALL THE DATA/APPLICATIONS ON YOUR PHONE. Instructions for downgrading are here.
Now that you have RC29/RC7:
Download 'AndroidMod.zip' from one of the links in JesusFreke's post
Extract 'recovery_testkeys.img' from that zip and copy it to your SD card.
Download 'install.zip' which is attached to this post below.
Extract 'install' from that zip and copy it to your SD card.
Put the SD card in the phone or disconnect the phone if it is attached by USB.
Reboot the phone (switch it off and then on again).
When it has finished booting type the following at the home screen. It will start searching your contacts, but don't worry about that. Also, you won't see any visible sign that the first command worked. Just go ahead and type the second command straight afterwards:
cd sdcard<press enter>
sh install<press enter>
After a moment your phone should reboot itself. To check that the flashing worked, switch off the phone and then hold down the home key while you switch it on again. Keep the home key held down until you see the recovery screen (with the "!" triangle and the picture of the phone). Then press Alt+L on the keyboard and if you see "Using test keys" on the second line of text then the modified recovery image is installed and you can now install a modified firmware.
Cool! Thanks for that... much simpler... anyone else tried this yet?
I'm going to attempt all this later.
Phil
i just tried it and it works. confirmed.
great for beginners!
Hey tried it and it works!! Now how about one on restoring data after backup.
thanks for this just tryed it and worked first time.
First off thanks for all information here. Am I correct that after I downgrade to rc29 I then follow the instructions in this thread and then I can install jf 1.3 rc30. Or do I have this all wrong?

Sweet! Thanks for the reply. I will attempt this real soon. Do you have any suggestions before I begin? After I modify the firmware I will not get ota updates anymore right? Lets say the cupcake update, or any other for that matter, does come out. I would just have to wait untill a smarter person then me converts it to a new modified image to flash to my phone? Is that right? Thanks for any help. I'm sure this is probably the worng place to ask all of these questions. d

in one of the zips from JF is an app that will REsign any update.zip, so when an ota comes you just have to wait for the update.zip to show up then you could REsign it with the dev keys, pretty easy, but it will probably show up pretty fast now that almost every G1 is probably running that keyset.

UPDATE..
Its working now...I wasn't doing it in the telnet client. I was just typing it in randomly and it didnt work that way for some reason.
Ok. I have downgraded to rc29 and copied the two images two my sd card. but I'm not sure if I even have root. When I try to change directory it doesnt happen. I have to have root by installing the modified rc29 right? I did type telnetd at the home screen and pushed enter. nothing happened. I know I'm missing something just not sure what yet? I did install the telnet client from the market as well. I'm not understanding something it appears. Anyone?

use the telnet client to telnet to localhost. *then* you will have root. (note: that's only applicable for RC29. to get root on JFv1.3, just type su in terminal emulator).
To know if you have root access, check the prompt you get. if you get #, then you have root access. if you get $, you don't have root access.

Hi there. I just wanted to clarify that if you're following the instructions I posted then you don't need telnet.

No, you don't need the modified RC29 to do this. After you type the "cd sdcard<enter>" command nothing visible should happen. It works because the bug in RC29 which we are exploiting executes everything you type on a hidden root console, so the cd command works, but it just doesn't show you anything. Then you enter the second "sh install<enter>" command and that runs a script that does all the good stuff and then reboots.

Correct, this is a really good idea! Instead of typeing telnetd to start it as root, you are typing in and running the script that will root your phone-- as root! I'll update my sticky post shortly.

Rogers HTC Dream - froyo update

Question to those who have updating their Dream from Rogers, was it at all slow or where their noticeable improvements?
I have one at my disposal but running stock OS (1.5/1.6 i assume). Anyone have a nice and easy to follow tutorial to update this phone without hassles? Also does updating android OS require rooting the device?
Thanks in advance.

try this:
http://theunlockr.com/category/howto/android_how_tos/htc-g1-dream-how-tos/
Follow instructions. This seems to me to be the easiest guide. Be careful of the Rogers/T-Mobile thing. Seems there are different radio's and such. I don't know anything about Rogers. As far as Roms, I use HTCclay's Superfly TCBY. Lot of memory left on phone. Just try a few to see which you like. Good Luck.
By the way, you do have to be rooted. The guide will walk you through it.

I would say to try the ROM in my sig (the stock ROM)
works for g1 and 32B Magic
he is going to need the EBI1 kernel to go with the rom.
Ok I am reviving this thread because I want to make sure I am following the right steps in doing so. Don't want to mess this up.
Successfully rooted the phone following video I found in the second post of this thread. Can't link you to it because I am still a new member =S! I checked the radio version of the phone and it is 3.22.20.17. Which ROM is recommended? As I said, I just want to get rid of this terrible stock rom from rogers and put froyo (which in turn also allows me to get touch screen keyboard activated) on here.
Thanks in advance.
With that radio you will need to flash ebi1 kernels after you flash the roms.
I completely forgot that Rogers blocked the virtual keyboard with their firmware. That's such bull****.

Now you have more information in the link in your sig. Question: Can you re up the RS link you have there? Also, rooting the phone just means that you have the app called Superuser?
Now I get quite lost the moment you start explaining the options HTC Dream users have. Is there a recommended ROM to download for this phone considering its specs?

Yes it is sad that rogers has done this. Do whatever they can to screw the consumers over. Just found out it is 1.5.
Any help on this?
Ok still lost on trying to do this and want to follow the set up from cyanogen but its really complicated. I don't want to make a backup of contacts and stuff because it wasn't originally my phone.
Do I still need the amon_ra's recovery?

Think of what you need to do:
1) Obtain root access so that you can flash a new recovery
2) Replace recovery so that you can flash new SPL
3) Flash new SPL so that you can be more compatible with roms / kernels
4) Flash a new rom (IE/ Cyanogenmod 6), and a compatible EBI1 kernel (for instance, Brian Crook's ones on the Cyanogenmod website)
Without getting into huge detail, you do it in this order to prevent your device from being unable to boot / recover.
You can flash the new RADIO and SPL from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=831139
Along with that, you use the appropriate supported +14MB EBI0 kernel.
More RAM is good
Well that makes sense.
Now I am following the Cyanogen wiki link (can't post there) and it says to launch flash rec but I can't understand from where I have to do this. Anyone care to help? And how does the Andriod SDK help?

Andriod sdk has the adb component needed to initiate commands to your device from your computer. then you need the android windows usb drivers.after installing sdk to see if you have connection with your device, open console on your computer start>run>type cmd and hit enter at the prompt type adb you should get several lines back kind of an options menu. at next prompt type adb devices. if your device is recognized you will get back:
device XXXXXXXX (this will be an actual number).
if you dont get any devices back with your phone attached to usb then you probably need the driver. just google it.
as for flashrec I dont believe I used this. I used exploid to gain root and install 1.33.2005 spl
Where do I get the android driver for windows (7 64bit specifically)? Adb command aint working in my cmd.
So what do I do about flashrec? Man updating this thing is driving me nuts. So many unexpected curves.
I also have Windows 7 64bit and I didn't need a driver it just works for me. Please tell us exactly what you are typing in and what output you are getting. You could also try the instruction to install the usb driver here:

Does the zip file for the android SDK make a difference if I can't install it through the .exe? It keeps saying that it doesnt detect the Java SDK when I try to install.
Yes, you can use the .zip. Extract it, run setup.exe, install Platform-tools, cd to the platform-tools directory then you can use adb. Fastboot is in the tools directory. That was just changed in the 2.3 sdk update so I don't know if the guide has been updated yet.

I've tried all methods and nothing seems to be working. Any suggestions? If you need more info just ask, but like i said, i've tried like three different ways and none work. I'll edit this post soon and add what common errors im getting
I couldnt get it done with Visionary r14, instead of getting the option screen when I opened it, it went straight to the rooting phone screen and just didnt work
I found r11 and used it instead and that solved my problem, the rest of the process went easy

I had the same problem. I used one way to turn S-off when I had the myTouch 4g with the radio 0.85.xxxx. When I had my phone swapped since I made up an excuse to get the good screen, the radio was 0.86.xxxx. I tried to follow the same steps as I did with 0.85.xxxx, but wouldn't work. So I ended up trying the ULTIMATE GUIDE TO ROOT and it worked. I put everything unlocked even SIM. THen I used VISIONary r14 to have it root then perm root.

I couldnt get it done with Visionary r14, instead of getting the option screen when I opened it, it went straight to the rooting phone screen and just didnt work
I found r11 and used it instead and that solved my problem, the rest of the process went easy

I tried r11 but it didn't work so I went to r14 with the ULTIMATE GUIDE TO ROOT and it works. So I guess each is their own.
Ok so I'm still having trouble with this. Can anyone tell me what I need to download for the sdk kit? I have a acer aspire one laptop either a d150 or a150.i don't know what the difference is. Running windows xp sp2 or 3 lol

Dont even bother setting up the SDK. It is a pain in the arse!!! Use this method if you need to set up ADB.
Thank you I was looking for something like this

Seriously people, don't you read threads? The rooting method is very easy and does not require ADB or the SDK. I've rooted *5 PHONES* on the first try by reading and just following the damn directions.
You temproot, run a couple of commands in terminal, reboot, temproot, permroot, and go on your merry way.
If this doesn't work follow the guide for gfree and that will do it.
Here, I made a SUPER-STEP-BY-STEP guide. If this is still too complicated for you then you really shouldn't be rooting at all, as it requires some basic knowledge of how to use a computer and the phone. And I mean BASIC.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225
This one is pretty damn easy, takes all of 10 minutes. Use the Terminal Emulator method.
Read the first post all the way through before you start to make sure you understand the entire process. In a nutshell, here's what happens:
*Download root.rar and extract to be a folder called ROOT on your sdcard. The ROOT folder should not be inside any other folders, so it will be sdcard/root.
*Download a file manager from the Market. Linda File Manager is my favorite.
*Download Terminal Emulator from the Market.
*Download the Visionary.apk file from the link in thread.
*from home screen - MENU, SETTINGS, APPLICATIONS, ALLOW INSTALL OF NON-MARKET APPS. Make sure the box is checked. ALSO UNCHECK FAST BOOT.
*Open linda file manager, navigate to visionary and click on it to install.
*Reboot. This will take a minute.
*Open visionary, check the box for SET SYSTEM R/W AFTER ROOT.
*Hit button for TEMP ROOT. Give it a minute.
*Open Terminal Emulator and type THE ITALIC COMMANDS, pressing ENTER after each.
su
*You should get a prompt for SUPERUSER PERMISSIONS. Click ALLOW. Back in Terminal, continue with these commands, typing them EXACTLY as they appear and pressing ENTER after each line.
cd sdcard/root
sh root.sh
*Now just wait a few minutes.
*When it's done, shut down the phone.
*Hold volume down + power until you get to a white screen. If it says S-OFF near the top then you're almost done. If not, repeat the previous steps until you do see S-OFF.
*Reboot.
*Open visionary, make sure SET SYSTEM R/W AFTER ROOT is checked.
*Click TEMP ROOT.
*When done, click ATTEMPT PERM ROOT. This might take a few minutes. Your phone will reboot itself when done. (I think)
When you boot back up you should be permanently rooted and you are ready to install a custom ROM if you like.
*To verify that you are rooted, open Terminal Emulator and type su. If you get the # sign and a notice that superuser permissions were granted, then you have succeeded in rooting your phone. Congrats!
Installing a custom ROM is another procedure so do a search for the guides on those procedures.

Assuming you're doing it correctly, some phones have trouble. Look for the guide titled ULTIMATE S-OFF, CHECK OUT EVEN IF ALREADY ROOTED.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
The gfree method should do the trick.
I got it working after 4 hours -__- I'm not sure if it had anything to do with it, but once i removed the sim card it seemed to work. Got s-off and permroot and even flashed cm7 nightlies afterwards with no problems, then put the sim back i n

SLOW DOWN, read the directions CAREFULLY, and make sure you understand the entire process before starting. I probably read the guides 20 times from start to finish before I rooted.

[TOOL] PERMANENT-ROOT (Fixed Links!) & Temp-Root (v2) for any MT4GS (Windows)

As far as I can tell, these are the only detailed instructions here for obtaining Permanent Root (and S-OFF). Hit THANKS if you feel inclined...
Just to be clear, this is not my basework, but I've assembled all the pieces and instructions to make it work for the MT4GS! Thanks to revolutionary, modaco, teamWin, eugene373, idanfima, coolbho3000 and wisefire for the easyfrevo part!
Temp Root:
You must have the USB drivers installed for your MT4GS. (If you don't have them, you can always install HTC Sync for the Sensation, plug in your MT4GS, and it will install the correct drivers.)
You MUST exit from the HTC Sync application for this to work!! (Right-click on the icon in the taskbar, and select Exit)
You must also have USB Debugging enabled. (Settings, Applications, Development, USB debugging)
Click-For-perma-temp-v2.zip
As of this update (23 Feb 2012), this has the latest SuperUser.apk...
Unzip, and run the batch file (Run_ME_Fr3vo_ROOT.bat)...
You'll get errors like "An error occurred while running the exploit (-1) (errno: 14)", but if it also says "Exploiting device" afterwards, then it was successful!
This is temp-root, meaning that you can run apps that require root, but it'll go away when you reboot. Run the script again to get root back.
Permanent Root: (thanks to ikhzter for helping with some of the instructions!)
NOTE: If you don't have ADB working (or don't know what ADB is), please download the drivers and files for the temp-root above, and be sure to save the revolutionary.exe into the same directory as the temp-root solution. Make sure you have HTC fastboot drivers as well (if you don't already), which are on the Revolutionary page.
Or use the tools provided here: Click-For-ADB-Windows.zip
(Zip contains ADB.EXE FASTBOOT.EXE ...)
Thank you Team Revolutionary! If you would like to be one of the first to get PERMANENT root access, then download the new Revolutionary, instructions here:
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
Revolutionary version 0.4pre3 or later will work with your MT4GS, but it's still a developer preview... Don't come yelling if you mess up your phone. (But do share your results, so we can collectively solve any issues!)
You'll need your serial number (Settings, About, Phone Identity), HBOOT version (only 1.44.0007 is supported now, but you can check your HBOOT by: Settings, Power, uncheck "Fast Boot", then power off, hold down volume down as you power on, the HBOOT version is at the top of the screen). Be sure to write down your Beta Key! (Or copy it to your clipboard so you can paste it into your command prompt.)
Note: you can also enter bootloader by issuing the command "adb reboot-bootloader" if you have the ADB & drivers installed (follow the Temp Root instructions above for drivers and ADB).
YOU MAY NEED TO DISABLE YOUR ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM- Norton is flagging up Revolutionary as a Virus when it isn't.
With the phone switched on (not in HBOOT, just the regular home screen), run the revolutionary Utility you just downloaded from http://revolutionary.io/ and if it has found your device it should read
"Found your device: myTouch_4G_Slide..." (If it doesn't, see DEBUGGING, below)
Once you have entered your beta key correctly, follow any on screen prompts or actions from revolutionary and wait for it to S-Off,
You're done. Your Device will Successfully have S-OFF.... If you have S-off, your hboot will now be 1.44.1107
Revolutionary will now ask you to Install clockwork recovery mod after S OFF. While you may choose to let Revolutionary do it for you (easiest, but it installs an older version with some USB charging issues), you can always do it manually, which I show below.
Hit THANKS!
You now have S-OFF on your MT4GS! Woo hoo!
Next, we'll flash the latest ClockWork Recovery (v4.0.0.9 without the charging problem) if you didn't do it above: (Thanks to Paul O'Brien / Modaco!!)
Download the ClockworkMod image file from here or here (direct mirror)
Turn off the device.
Boot device into bootloader (power off and boot while holding down the volume-down key, then select FASTBOOT with the power button)
Make sure the device is in FASTBOOT and not HBOOT
Connect the device to the computer via USB.
On your computer, open a command prompt/terminal and run:
fastboot devices
You should see something similar to:
List of devices attached
HTXXXXXXXXXX device
Write the image to the recovery partition ('fastboot flash recovery /path/to/<recovery>.img')
Do a recovery reboot to test (power off and boot holding down the volume-down key, select recovery)
Now you can flash the latest SuperUser. (Thanks to ChainsDD!)
Go to http://androidsu.com/superuser/ or download it directly here.)
Copy this file to your SD card root folder (main folder of your memory card)
Start clockworkmod recovery (hold down the Volume-Down key while turning on the phone), select Recovery
BACKUP YOUR ROM USING CWM BEFORE ATTEMPTING ROOT!
Navigate to "Backup & Restore" using the Volume Down button and press select (power button to select) then select "Backup"
Select "install zip from sdcard" after backing up
Then select "Choose zip from sdcard"
Then select "Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip" (or whatever file you obtained from above)
Then select "Yes - install Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip" to confirm (some have had to flash this a few times)
Then go back
Then reboot.
You're rooted!
I highly recommend going to the Market once you've rebooted and install "Busybox," which many rooted apps will assume is already installed.
Download "Root Checker" to make sure everything is done correctly!
Please help with these instructions.... provide feedback if I can make something more clear!
NEW! Video Instructions:
DEBUGGING:
If the Revolutionary exploit hangs or seems to be taking a very long time... or if it fails altogether, then please install my Temp-Root solution above first. Then, try the perm-root again.
Try installing the same drivers that I listed on the first post for the Temp-Root solution. Also, make sure you've exited from HTC Sync on your PC. (it will say "out of date" if HTC Sync is still running)
And make sure you have USB debugging enabled.
If Revolutionary still fails to find your phone, re-verify you have all the drivers installed, (uninstall and reinstall) and try "disk drive" mode and then "charge only" mode.
Still can't figure out how to get fastboot to work? Try this post for a quick solution.
For those having GPS issues after this process, try installing "BusyBox" from the Market and then installing the app "FasterFix" from the Market.
I certainly welcome feedback... and I appreciate your THANKS!
My phones:
HTC G1
HTC Nexus One
HTC Sensation
HTC My Touch 4G Slide
Tested this just now. Working just fine without any problems. Thank you so much!

Aw, man, your use of "perma" in the subject threw me.
I downloaded ChiefzReloaded's link for the Linux version of this script (hsi thread here was closed for some reason, but he posted the same thing at RootzWiki) and converted it to Windows and ran it for mine. It works great, as does your version. But as you point out, it doesn't get rid of the S-ON. We'll have to wait for those awesome Revolutionary folk, I guess.
Many thanks for bundling this up so well for Windows, multi-uploading it, and posting about it here. You rock!

The history behind the title:
For other devices (Sensation, EVO 3D), an earlier version of this method yielded a temp-root that went away after a short period of time even if you didn't reboot. The solution was to leverage the "/vendor/bin" directory in the PATH, which made the root "stick"... permanent until the next reboot!
And so was born the term "perma-temp-root."
Worked for me. I actually needed root access to run Titanium Backup since I had to wipe my phone too. haha thanks!
Very cool of you sir, thank you
And we inch closer to permaroot for S-ons...can't wait...
works for me too. Well done .

It seems to me that some of my writes to the data partition still remain after reboot, which surprises me. So apparently not everything is lost after reboot. The "root" status is certainly lost though.

Changed some auto run settings for apps and rebooted. The changes stuck. Thank you.
So on this post they've got the Sensation S-Off. I'm wondering if this will work with our myTouch 4G Slides:
http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...s-off-tool-released-for-htc-specific-devices/
No, not yet; it checks for the phone type before it does anything, and the Doubleshot / 4G Slide is not yet supported. They're in the process of examining it to figure things out, though. There was some trouble with the US T-Mobile Sensations at first, but that was overcome.
Unfortunately, the XTC Clip apparently won't work on the 4G Slide, so let's hope they can get it S-OFF'd. They're pretty much our only hope.

It could be a start since the sensation and the 4g slide has the same guts.
With temp-root, when you run titanium to uninstall or freeze stock apps, do those apps reappear when you reboot?
I know you lose root during reboot, but I wonder if uninstalling a stock app will be replaced after reboot.

It replaces them after a reboot. My guess is that it does a hash check on the /system partition and then if it fails it reflashes it.
If you freeze them, they will stay frozen after a reboot. Not as great as an uninstall... but better then nothing
You can freeze apps with Titanium Pro, but if you dont have Titanium Pro(about $7), Easy Freezy is on sale right now(about $2). Works just as good https://market.android.com/details?id=com.modaco.easyfreezy
PS: Temp-root worked great! Wonder how hard it would be to package this into an app that you can have run when the phone boots. Kinda like the temp-root app VISIONary made for the G2.

BEST Guide for Returning to Stock ! (Add to guide thread?)

Here are the directions and files used to fix this problem (do not type any of the "quotation marks"):
1. Download the .zip file from here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YUYEMJNM
and put it on the root of your sdcard. (Do not unzip the file). Then rename it to PD15IMG.zip .
2. Download the miscnew file to your computer (uploaded as attachment to this post). Unzip it and place the miscnew.img file that was in the zip onto the root of your sdcard. You can delete the .zip file after you do this.
3. Boot your phone up like normal and connect your phone to your computer.
4. Make sure your sdcard is NOT mounted (but make sure those 2 files were copied to your sdcard).
5. Go into adb and type "adb shell"
6. Then type, "su"
7. Then type, "dd if=/sdcard/miscnew.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17"
8. Once this is done after about 5 seconds, turn your phone off and unplug from the computer.
9. Once the phone is off, hold down the volume-down key and the power button until you arrive at the bootloader. Once there, the phone should automatically start checking that .zip file you downloaded to the root of your sdcard. After its done checking, it will ask you if you want to continue, and just follow the prompt to say "yes" and YOU'RE DONE!
This guide was made by travisjames and was just put into my own words. His guide was a derivative of Apache14's OTA and Radio downgrade guide for the T-Mobile G2.
Also, thanks to Clarknick27 for tipping me off on how to get back into my phone after it was unbootable.
***Please click "thanks" if this helped you!
Ignore/Wrong thread...
two questions-
if i used gfree, do i need to undo gfree 1st? (you make no mention of rooting techniques, and if this undoes all those or not)
second, my phone, about a month ago, lost data connectivity on the usb port-- in other words, it charges fine, but i can not get any computer to pick it up any more to transfer files are use adb, which is a royal pain. -- can i use terminal emulator to accomplish your commands, or am I SOL ?
thanks
Yes, you need to undo Gfree.
Yes, you can run the commands from Terminal Emulator.
Added to Wiki.
thanks jack,
would the syntax be exactly the same as above via term em?
Yes, just skip the "adb shell" command.
Is this to undo 2.3.4 GB update and take it back to 2.2.1?
How do I undo gfree? And if I just run the pg15img will I keep root? I need a way to return to stock but rooted.

First question, Here is the thread you need to undo gfree (get s-on) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996 (about half way down OP)
Second question, no you will not keep root
witch stock rom do you want rooted, stock 2.3.4 can not be rooted right now
So... to summarize, this would be to revert back to Android 2.3.4, sense 3.5 STOCK, without root, eng. hboot, or s=off.
In other words, if you purchased a MT4G now, or received a replacement MT4G with 2.3.4.... Following these steps will give you this new gingerbread stock state (approximately).
Please confirm. Thanks!

Yes...check the 3rd and 4th post of this thread....
Just curious, so if I flash this ROM in recovery, will I lose root, s-off, etc.?
What I'm trying to do is flash the phone to the MT4G stock rom (which I assume this is), use gfree to sim unlock it, then revert back to my nandroid backup, so I wanna make sure this will not interfere with my root access before I proceed to flashing it. Thanks in advance to whoever answers me~!

You don't need to type adb shell because you are on terminal emulator.
Just type su to gain superuser access.
Then type dd if=/sdcard/miscnew.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17
Make sure you have the file miscnew.img in the root of your sd card.
Absolutely Perfect
I have looked and looked all over both XDA and the Interent in general. I was trying to restore my Glacier (MyTouch 4g) from stock 2.3.4 to stock 2.2. NOTHING worked. It got to the point that I didn't even remember everything that I tried. I followed this guide to the T. PERFECT!!! I am now back to having my phone exactly how I left the Tmo store with it.

Sorry, a complete noob to "gfree". I'm a new convert to GSM as I was with SPrint CDMA for 10 years until a couple weeks ago. I've rooted Samsing phones but never an HTC.
Anyways, I just purchased a MyTouch that had been rooted and loaded with Virtuous ROM. It's for my wife and she wants it back to stock. I tried all your directions exactly but still will not work. I'm assuming it's this "gfree" issue. I followed the link to the other thread but it's not clear on exactly what I need to do in my situation.
When I run the bootloader, it says bad or no such image... I have confirmed I have PD15IMG.zip and miscnew.img in the sdcard root directory.
Can someone please show me in simplified terms. Thanks!

If you are new to this rooting stuffs, i suggest don't go with methods, that have potential to brick your phone.
Just do this simple method, Follow the link in my signature, you will see a Rooted version of the stock 2.3.4 rom.
Just flash the Rom through your recovery.........no big deal.......easy way to get the stock feel.....
Follow the instructions carefully.........Happy Flashing........
Thanks for the great help. One more question -- How do I turn "quick boot" off?
