[Q] HTC sense style contact merging? - General Questions and Answers

I changed my rom from the basic Desire HD sense to cyanogen mod 7 a few weeks back, and I like it for the most part. There's just a few things I miss. The biggest thing is the fact that I can't merge/link facebook, google twitter etc. contacts together. So I have 3 different contacts for the same person. Is there an app that could let me do this, without all of them needing to have the exact same name?
Also, I liked the sense keyboard alot more, is there an app for that too?
Thanks

Yes, long press on contact hit edit contact.. Then menu-join... There is one issue fixed... As for the keyboard... I recommend SwiftKey, it isn't free but in my opinion the best.. Or look around here for a swype apk... That would be free, or what ever... Just look around. And get the amazon app market, you'd be surprised what you get for free, and they do have discounts on stuff... But keyboards are more preference I guess, some people like to be able to swipe, some like bigger keys and customization like thumb keyboard, some like predictions and functionality like SwiftKey... Idk...

Keyboard Replacements

Hey everyone, just wanted to know what your favorite Android keyboard replacement is. What is it? Also, could you include a .apk for me to DL if it's not in the market or if it's htc_ime, since I already have it. Thanks for the help!

I like SlideIt and ShapeWriter. Swype beta is closed so use these both, pretty much the same. I think SlideIT is great, better word prediction of the 2, but lacks the ability to type numbers od punctuation by long pressing a key. Plus it its $8.
ShapeWriter is free and allows for the long press, so I use it. But the word prediction isn't as good as SlideIT (which was rarely wrong). If SlideIt would add this feature, it would be perfect. Will see how Swype is when it comes out, but these are good.
Before that I used Bettter Keyboard, but I like the swiping input style.
swype is the best!
swype
finally starting to love this. took a while to get used to it, but it really does work well. once it's out of beta, i definitely recommend downloading it.
Okay yeah, I've been using Swype beta (the one they officially released from their website) and my only issue with it is the lack of auto punctuation in many places. I'll try ShapeWriter too but I don't wanna spend any $, especially that much, on a keyboard. Has anyone else tried out the Themed HTC_IME's from XDA? I'm using one now and I love it, but I know that I input text faster with Swype. Any others?

Im currently using smart keyboard pro. It's multi touch, has several themes, and gives you a candidate bar with suggestions while using the droid's hardware keyboard.
Swipe is good too, but I mainly only use it for one handed operation

Right now I've been popping back and forth between Smart Keyboard Pro and jonasl's modified version of HTC_IME.
If you haven't tried the modded HTC_IME I would definitely start using it (it's less laggy and has a buncha new features). It has the best suggestion and correction of any of the non-swipers. Smart Keyboard Pro is still the fastest for me, though, and has the most features.
I have the same one as HTC_IME but I am trying to get the Swype keyboard on Mytouch 3g.
I have Mytouch 3g... Do u have an apk file cuz I have been looking around but I found a trial only n they are not working or are for another model of phone.

i agree. i'm addicted to it now.
i use the SwiftKey beta (i'ld post a link to their page but apparently im to new to do so).... its a real nice predictive text, that doesn't just try to do the current word but as it learns it will try and do the next word you going to write
I use smart keyboard pro because it has text substitution. For example, I can type xxx and have it pop in a long email address I have set up in the prefs. Saves a ton of typing.

[Recommendation] GO Dialer (and Contacts, SMS; Weather is okay...)

I've seen a couple of people asking for alternative dialer recommendations - especially those using non-Sense ROMs (CM7, AOSP, etc). I switched from Android Revolution (with Sense) to CM7 last week and was definitely missing the predictive dialing. Tried a couple of different Market dialers, and found that I like GO Dialer the best. Combined with GO Contacts, it does everything Sense did, and more. Lots of skins available (I prefer the simplest but there are some pretty colorful ones).
This also led me to try other GO Team apps, and I really like GO SMS over the stock Messaging app. It has more of an iOS-style interface (one of the only iOS styles I prefer over Android) with the side-to-side speech bubbles.
I also went with the GO Weather widget - it's kind of a Sense-style clock/weather module, and provides really detailed conditions and forecast info. I don't like the font used, and would love to have the animated weather wake-up function (my daughter loves the windshield wiper), but what ya expect for free uh?
These products could be better, but they're some of the best free apps I've found for non-Sense ROMs.
+1 on Go SMS
and
+1 on Go Contacts/Dialer
I have always been a fan of the Go SMS app, and just recently snagged Go Dialer... It is awesome!
I use Go SMS and Go Dialer, Go Contacts and I'm on a sense ROM.
I even switch to Go Laucher Ex when I'm bored with Sense...I like it better than ADW Ex and I paid for the full version. Go Launcher has a Theme Creator that they released and there are some really nice Go Launcher Themes coming out.
Go Keyboard and Go Weather are still buggy...but I think will be alright once they get it worked out.
Go Widgets..meh.

Havent' tried that - I picked up FlexT9 when it was free on the Amazon App Store, and I love it - great speech recognition, Swype-like tracing, and stylus-type 'writing'. Also numbers and special characters on long-press... I'll have to write up a separate recommendation on that one, or ++ if there's an existing one.
The only thing I miss vs. the HTC keyboard is the directional buttons for moving the cursor around. Without a trackball, it's sometimes a pain to move around a text field...
Oh yeah, GO launcher Ex, Go SMS, and go Dialer and Contacts..
Must haves. Go Launcher is my Favorite.
Go dialer is a must have on asop roms.

I have some trouble getting the international calls made by Google Voice with Go Dialer. Any thought?

Report it as a bug, there is a feedback option.
Agreed. GO SMS Pro, GO Contacts and Dialer are all great applications. Definitely worth checking out.
Lets not forget about Go keyboard, they just added the swip feature to it. Tried several keyboards and Go is hands down for me.
Does anyone know if GO SMS Pro can be themed white on black?

Just have to wonder what go is using as a business model. All this great software for free.

Possibly they are waiting to be noticed by one of the major phone makers. Maybe they will design a phone around it. The GoPhone. lol.

I do not think GO SMS has that capability, at least I did not notice it when I was using it. I am a very big fan of the GO Launcher and other things from the dev team. However for my messaging app I use chomp SMS. Chomp lets you customize just about every aspect of thier software and it retains the droid emoticons instead of replacing them with Normal looking ones.

cm7 keyboard and phone

can anyone let me know if there is a way to add the stock htc keyboard and phone on this rom?
The keyb that came with the rom is extremely difficult to type with, and the phone app, in order to dial a number i have to go to phone, then contacts, then search ...
while on the stock phone app you just only type the first letters of the name of the person and dial...
thks
Smart keyboard and smart keyboard Pro are very comparable to the HTC keyboard. I however, recommend using Swype. As for the search I use the Google Search / search button on my phone to search for contacts. Then when selected it brings up their contact card and can call / SMS from there.
Do a search for HTC ime keyboard I haven't tried it on CM7 but I know it works on other non sense roms.

He means it will not work. Confusing grammar
One dialer is similar to the htc one in that it has predictive dialing or whatever it's called... It's lighter than the other alternatives i've tried too. As for keyboard, i keep coming back to swift keyboard x. Highly customizable and better layout than htc. I can't type more quickly on this than on anything else.
Cheers

Do a search for HTC_IMEI Mod Keyboard in the Market. It is a version of the HTC keyboard from one of the Verizon HTC Droid phones. I've used it on both CM7 and Sense ROMs. Swype is a good one that seems similar to the HTC keyboard also.
I keep going back to Go keyboard. It's free and has some great features (arrows for navigation, keypad, etc).

SMS and Messaging

I'm not sure if this is Ok since there is a similar thread to this but older and not quite the same. If it is wrong please remove this. Okay I have the SK4G and I love it alot, especially my hard keyboard with the special emote, search, and voice button. What I don't like is the stock messenger, it just looks and feels.......bleh. Is there any sms messenger that looks/feels better and allows me to use my special buttons? I know it's kinda "Why not just take the two seconds to type Alt : whatever? Well I like it and would like to use it is all. I've tried ICS messaging from the play store, and the different messenger from Generic Ginger before it was recently updated. I liked both of them, the Ginger one moreso but they don't allow my buttons.
Ik what ya mean I dislike the default messaging system on sk4g but its exactly what you just said bleh and stuff sorry that I don't have an answer for yah

I don't really get what you mean by using special buttons.. doesn't the stock one let you do that? I"m not sure if the other ones do but there are some apps out there that are way better with more advanced features and customizable looks.. the 2 main ones I know of are GoSMS and handcent.. so try them out!
Chompsms is the best.

The contacts kind of suck...

Is there a way to get the contacts back to a more "stock android" feel? The touchwiz format just seems inefficient and the call/ text buttons are just too small... the whoel thing seems like a giant waste of screen space!
I agree, the dialer/contact app is a big piece of junk on touchwiz.
I would recommend just using a different app, which you can easily install from the market. I really love exDialer - I just downloaded it a few days ago and I feel it works really well and looks much better than the regular dialer.
There are many apps for this, a popular one being Go! Contacts, but I found exDialer to be the best looking out of all of them. Start-up time is also very fast, which is important!
I felt the same way until I learned swipe contact from left to right to call and from right to left to send txt.

Yeah I agree. exDialer is based off of MIUI's dialer and it's the best. It also uses the same framework for it's contacts app (it comes with the dialer app when you download from play store).
But does anybody actually use the contact app? I love the smart find on the dialer so I never really have to use the contact app for anything.
