I know it is "outdated" but its upgrade time and $.01 on Amazon... - Thunderbolt General

Hi all,
Wife is due for an upgrade and knows basically zilch about phones. Its down to the D3 and the Tbolt. We do NOT live in a LTE zone yet but rumor is it will be deploying next summer out here. She likes the Tbolt screen but isn't thrilled with no keyboard. However it is $.01 on Amazon right now and that is pretty hard to beat especially for a 4G phone with over 512 ram and HTC build quality.
So if you guys/gals had to pick a phone RIGHT NOW out of Verizon's lineup, would the Tbolt still be it? I know I ask this on a biased forum lol. Anyway, she has left it up to me to pick the phone and at the expense of sounding like a cheap husband... the price alone has me leaning strongly towards it. The Revolution is automatically out being a LG product and the specs suck anyway, Charge has a great screen but terrible amount of RAM, D3 is not 4G but the keyobard is effing sweet (pentile screen tho)... DX2 felt slower to me than my old DX (plus pentile sucks again) so that is out.
Oh, we are both grandfathered into unlimited data so getting a LTE phone is pretty enticing. Speaking of that, when LTE does deploy out here... bye bye Comcast rofl. I may just keep my boost flashed Epic for the foreseeable future as my primary phone for unlimted calling and buy a beat up Tbolt on ebay used on my primary line to hotspot our house for literally 2-3x as fast internet as stupid Comcast which is the only half decent provider out here. Verizon refuses to deploy fios out here for some insane reason...

Why not check out the Bionic on the 8th?
It will most likely cost $300 with a new contract and it is 4G of course, but its supposed to be very nice. There is a video on YouTube of someone playing with a Bionic and the new Blur looks really awesome.

I would never rely on mobile data for home Internet. As long as you don't need reliable service I guess it's an option. Clearwater was good until the network got full due to the evo. Friend as a lte hotspot as their only Internet and they say it sucks, constantly drops signal.

If I had to buy right now, I'd check out the Revolution and Charge, but probably go with the Thunderbolt again (especially if I was paying and it was only $0.01!). The Bionic looks nice I guess, but honestly the performance of the Tbolt leaves little to be desired for me, and I really can't see the Bionic being $300 better. The only other thing I'd want out of the TB is a physical keyboard, but unfortunately there isn't a 4G verizon phone with one yet (or on the immediate horizon that I know of).

Yes, I would still get the TB again. You are not going to get near the features on any other phone for the price. One penny. You are going to sign up and get a 2 year contract anyway.. why spend $200 - $300 extra for not that much more if at all? Besides, is your wife going to be a power user and require root, etc? Doubtful. I think she will get used to the key board, especially for the price.
I can say it .. "no brainer".

Revolution has very little dev support.
Droid charge seems very laggy and IMHO I hate the look of it.
Droid bionic will almost certainly come with an encrypted bootloader.

I am confused when I hear people say this.. I am rooted and use cyanogen.. But even the stock rom performs good as far as I am concerned. Are you talking reception or speed of running apps?

Re-read his post. The performance "leaves little to be desired" meaning that it's perfectly good.

Saying this phone is out dated is false. Name a phone on Verizon with ask the same features and currently out. Most of the complainers will complain regardless of phone because they have the want of a phone hacker but not the knowledge or will to make the phone do want they think it should. That and well, some people are just never happy because they don't realize the phone they have is really more of a computer that also happens to make calls. i'm sure everyone knows someone they its never happy with their PC either
also, the phone isn't Jesus--it doesn't perform miracles and it doesn't rise from the dead if you kill it

I would again go with the TB but the Droid 3 is tempting for me since it does have the slide out keyboard. I came from the Droid 2 to the TB because I wanted to be locked into 4G before it was capped (Which I did successfully). Now that I have used 4G, there is no looking back but when a 4G phone with a slide out keyboard is released I will be all over that. Until then, I will stick with the TB as others have stated the speed is incredible. I use the debloated stock ROM and have no problems what so ever. Don't even need to OC it, it is that good.

The big question is what do you need your phone to do. While the Bionic will be newer, and may have some new features, are those features worth $300. Most phones out now are perfectly capable, especially the Tbolt. If you don't game, or need the biggest %#$, the Tbolt is a great phone. It comes down to UI, which one do you like the best? I prefer sense, hence, I stick with HTC.

I would buy a D3 for her. I'm sure she's just going to text a lot so the physical keyboard is a plus and I doubt your wife will care about the screen size that much. Also are you gonna root it too? I think the D3's stock Tom is a lot smoother then the Tbolt.

Be aware the getting a phone from Amazon.com (or Wirefly or Costco or.....) involves an additional ETF if you change your plan.
This isn't a bad thing as long as you're aware of it, just be sure you read the terms carefully and understand them before signing.

SO, do you REALLY love your THUNDER bolt???

I just had to ask you guys/girls. I went to the store and this old lady in a wheel chair told the sales guy " I want the thunderbolt, where is it?" This thing is HOT?
I love it. Really a good phone...
I don't get 4G here so I think it's alright. Not the best. I'm coming from TMO and had a G2. I hate the battery life on this phone. It idles at 100+ma with the screen off as appose to my G2 which was around 30ma and my Nexus One at 3ma. But the display is really nice. I guess I'm just remorseful for leaving TMO.
Edit: just realized that all the other g2 find I was comparing this to had custom kernels so its unfair to compare both.
Phone is awesome, definitely worth the cash

How do you measure that? Also, you can turn off 4g if its not available in your area.
I like the phone...but seeing how I am right on the line for 3g and 4g, I have yet to be able to fully experience the speed possiblities. The problem I have is battery life, coming from TMO and a Vibrant and an HD2, both which were far better. I'm still experimenting with settings however, and i'm sure once I root, and a few custom ROM's come out, it will be tons better. Nothing but good things can come from a piece of equipment like this.
I love most of it.. There are minor annoyances, but I don't think I've ever owned a "perfect phone". I've gone past the point of no turning back (returns) and I'm happy about it.
I left T-Mobile this past Sunday. After I heard the news of AT&T buying them out, I knew I had to move on. I was using the Galaxy S 4G, which now for sale.
Anyway, I feel that I made the right move. I really love the Thunderbolt very much! None of the phones @ TMO has anything on this bad boy. Can't even tell you how much faster the TB is over any of the 4G phones I had on TMO.
Yes I know Battery Sucks, but Cant Expect Good Gas Mileage out of a ferrari... I can look at other phones and specs, but I have tried everything, and there isnt anything that this phone doesnt do.
And of course the 2 biggest reasons for me getting it:
- LTE, amazing in Orlando, Fl
- Talk and Surf, I literally needed this, and use it a lot when I drive with maps and talking.

I recently sold my iphone 4 (att) and converted to android. This is my first handset. I have been LOOOOOVVVVIIINNNGGGGGG this phone. Now that i can set my phone to stay on 3g or 4g battery has improved much and the LTE speeds ive gotten in NYC are amazing. Was bored of iOS. Really loving the tinkering with this phone. Now waiting for that easy root and cyanogen Gingerbread ROM
I am in love.
I came from ATT and the Tilt2
I love VZW.
I love Android
I love the TB

I left Tmo today also. I sold my g2, and im moving on. It breaks my heart to hear that the idiots at stupid T & T are going to corrupt Tmobile. But whatever i guess...business is business.
Im picking up my thunderbolt tomorrow from work, and im not going to look back anymore. I do miss my G2 and wish i coulda used it for Verizon, but whatevs.
A lil FYI guys!
My settings currently:
LTE only
extended battery
11 hrs off charger
47% battery left. being using it a pretty good amount also. Seems cdma/lte must be what is hurting battery life.
P.S. - yes i love my thunderbolt and could never imagine returning it for a bionic or anything else in the near future honestly.
Absolutely happy, great phone, network, and best community. Can't wait for future updates! More to come!

Well, I just rooted (ADB Method), went perfectly, debloated, running MikRom's Perfect Storm (seems great so far), and I am tethering my laptop using wifi tether and getting ridiculous speeds. Yes, I think I love my Thunderbolt!
Only thing that could make me happier about this phone is if android had as many quality apps and games as iOS.

Yeah I love it, it was worth the wait and I'm not even in a 4G area but its what i wanted, screen size, processor, ram all to my liking and I'm anti Moto now because of eFUSE with the DX and such. X was gonna be my choice but I canceled that pre-order when I heard about the eFUSE. So HTC it is and Tbolt is just to my liking. Rooted in under 5 days and running VirusROM R1B2 and loving it.

[Q] Should I buy a TB out of contract?

I am really really sick of this Droid 2 that VZW replaced my Droid with. I'm sick of Moto services invading my phone and slowing it down. There's no true ASOP build. This phone sucks balls.
I was set on buying an Incredible 2 OoC b/c it was cheap at $440 and saving my upgrade till later, but where I'm moving to next week already has LTE towers.
Do I really want to wait 2 months using this laggy trash? And possibly end up getting a TB anyway because the other phones coming out suck.
Or do I want to get a TB and save my upgrade till later in the Q4 2011/Q1 2012 when NFC Ice Cream Sandwich phones come out.
Don't want a Charge, poor build material choices.
Don't want a Revolution. Bing...
Does it really matter? Not really... You just root and you can put whatever you want and however you want.
Motorola tends to lock their bootloaders and make it hard to do what you want.
Samsung stated that they'll never lock it that way(Not in those words, but given the sense that they will leave it open)
HTC has been locking down their devices, but not as tough as Motorola does.
So basically pick a device with the hardware you want, and make sure it's root and you can install custom roms/kernels.
The T-Bolt is a great phone, and it has excellent community support. I have absolutely no complaints about my phone (aside from the battery life).
That being said, the Galaxy S II that's coming out looks sexy as hell. It might be worth the wait to hold out for that. Honestly, it's totally up to you.
There was talk about tiered 4G plans, which is what made me opt for the early upgrade to the T-Bolt (hoping to be grandfathered in to unlimited 4G). I haven't heard much on that front, but it's still a possibility.
wait a few months
from everything i've ever read about samsung phones, their software support is absolutely horrible. slow updates, faulty gps etc. i've heard a ton of people complain about the issue, and it seems to be the case with all their phones... never had one, but that's the impression i get.
the thunderbolt is a decent phone, but all it really has over the droid x is 4g. the t-bolt screen might be a little better, but not much. in day to day use it's not faster, the battery isn't even close and the build quality of the DX is equal or better. if i were you i would pick up a DX on craigslist for $175 and save your upgrade for a few months. The dx has even more dev support than the T-bolt and it's the best phone I ever had.
bottom line is, if you really want 4g speeds right now, really really bad, then get the thunderbolt. if you can do without that for awhile i think you will be really happy with a DX, especially after using the Droid 2, and you'll spend less than half the money.
the above is just my .02.
Show me a HTC or Motorola phone with latest software on it
Not you fat Jesus
I bought mine off contract and am very happy I did it. Yes there are a few issues, but nothing a little root cant fix.
Though waiting a few months for a better phone won't hurt, the TB is a great choice.

I just have to say that this cracks me up every time I see you post it.
Once you get a taste of 4G, you will never want a phone that is 3G only. So if you are moving to 4G area and don't want to pay full retail, I suggest you get a used Tbolt from craigslist and use it until something comes along that you like better, then sell the Tbolt
i love my TB, i have it rooted with das bamf NTE 1.6.3 and its about the coolest thing since MP3s.. as with others, the battery life on this thing is fkin AWFUL!! i have the extended battery and i still dont feel like its enough, however i use my phone probably more than i should or more than others. either way the LTE network is retarded fast and i'd never want 3g.
First off I just want to say I owned a droid 2 and it wasn't that bad. I jumped to the thunderbolt just to lock in the 4g rate. The bigger screen is a nice plus but other than that is the same thing. I wasn't overly impressed as other owners of the droid x and 2 have stated is not that big of a jump.
Before I end let me just say other than software wise android phones are exactly where I want them. I don't need a dual core chip in my phone and 4g is. good enough for anything I would ever want to do with my phone. I'm sure most of you will disagree but that's just how I feel. Flame away!
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I picked up a TB on craigslist for $350. The custom roms still seem a bit premature, however they should evolve over time. Nonetheless it's an amazing phone. If you have a desk job or spend a lot of time in your car, the battery life is not much of an issue. Just stay plugged in.
Got my TB off Craigslist for a fascinate trade plus 150$. I love it so far.. 4g is amazing..once you.have it you won't want to go back.
Roms are not bad. I'm waiting for a complete cm7 or sense 3.0 rom but other than that das bamf runs fantastic.
If you have the cash and want a great phone with a growing dev community, go for it.

Thank you for all the input.
It's funny the other 2 forums told me I'm a moron and this one says Buy a TB!!!
I use over 2GB of data a month so the 4G unlimited (Hopefully grandfathered for life) makes it very tempting since my upgrade isn't till mid July which is around the time the rumors of tiered data plans landing. I'm also not to optimistic about an actual new phone coming out then. Maybe the SGSII but I really hate the fact that it doesnt have a search button. It's a damn Google phone and I use the search button all the time, for GOOGLE, not Bing!
I didn't even think about craigslist. That might be a good option.
As for a cheap DX. No way. It basically is a D2 minus the keyboard. I like the keyboard, I can sacrifice it for a 4G newish phone but not for an X. and I hate the Blur invasion, and locked bootloader. My D2 has been running custom roms. They're just too laggy and buggy still. Fab, Kejar, and Rummy are awesome, but they all had DXs and the D2 ports were just not good. Most of it I blame on Blur still having to be in there. I've been running GB stock blur and custom and for the first time since my D1 ADW launcher gets kicked out of memory and has to reload when I hit home.... I hate it.

(Q) thunderbolt or charge

OK folks,
I have been a member follower of these groups for a longtime now. I love the android environment. I bought a charge yesterday that is giving me problems. I have not even begun to hack and am having lockups, robot voice, slow response, etc.
I have just factory reset before I take it back but wanted to know what the groups feel about the 2. I am looking for opinions with a reason. Please don't flame either device or me.

I'm actually thinking about getting a charge. The product designer needs to get fired for making the tbolt. Not enough testing was done and it surprises me.

Honestly if you can live without the charges screen, id go with the thunderbolt. In my opinion it has much better build quality, and the dev. support behind it is amazing, and will only get better with time. I dont think as many devs. will jump ship to the charge seeing how it isnt that much different then the fascinate. But thats just my two sense, both are great phones either way and are going to have their quirks.
def thunderbolt. faster, more support so far on xda sites, and samsung has been lazy with their updates..
Last week when I finally switched from Sprint to Verizon, I literally played with working models of the Thunderbolt and the Charge in the VZ store for 45min. I played with the app drawers, apps themselves, the cameras, hell I could probably have told you how many squares were on the back of the Charges battery case. After the 45 min there, I went to Best Buy and played with non working models for another 30 min (im VERY indecisive when it comes to new phones). I only went there because of my Silver reward zone membership and I had money off from the Zone rewards. In the end I chose the TBolt. I was very accustomed to Sense for one coming from my Evo for almost a year, and while sure the Charge as the Super Amoled screen, I like the screen on the Tbolt more. Touchwiz felt like a childrens coloring book in terms of the range of colors used opposed to Sense. The TBolt also feels good when held, actually feels like a phone while the Charge felt like a cheaply manufactured toy with a UI to match.
I read one review that I ended up agreeing with that said "The Droid Charge isnt worthy of the "Droid" name at all. Its nothing more then a Galaxy S class phone and Verizon needed a Droid branded 4G phone,so they slapped it on that (LTE radio) and bam, the DROID charge

I kinda feel the same way about the Thunderbolt TBH. I've had mine since Tuesday (the Thunderbolt), and I am really disappointed with Verizon's 4g initial lineup. The whole thing feels like Verizon had to rush there LTE network out, by annoucing it last year when they did (what Nov or Dec) and then they had to force out LTE phones, and none of them seem ready. I feel like we are all there test subjects, the problem is this isn't a test environment, and they are making some serious cash off the tests...
I am still torn on what to do. I have basically another 12 days before my 14 days left and I might switch to the charge within then.
Then again it doesn't matter for me...as LTE won't be in my area til later this year (as only based on Verizon press releases), I am only going this route to try for the grandfathered LTE...and kinda made up my mind this is the last phone I will ever buy on contract...

There is a n64 emulator on the market. I love it.

Main reason I didn't go with the charge, is because I had the fascinate. And Samsung's customer service, and updates for the phone are almost non existent. I will never go back to Samsung because of that fact. HTC is great about keeping there phones up to date. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, Samsung has a long way to go in terms of US software support before I'll own another one. I went android for the development community and no or long delayed updates/source code stifles development. Heck, most of the developers won't even touch a Samsung device.

I could not have said it better myself. It's a great phone, and with all the dev support behind it, it will only continue to improve. T-bolt all the way.
I'm not a fan of the physical buttons on the Charge, and while Samsung was on the list of companies who would consistently update their devices at Google I/O, I'll have to see it before I believe it.
love my thunderbolt, hate the battery, but love the phone.
love my tb and the way the charge feels.. all plastic and they want 300? I would pass plus look who makes it.

I feel the same. Phone is awesome, but battery sucks so much Coo-Low.
I got bamf remix 1.6.3 with the 4.7.7 kernel and while the battery is much better now when on standby, if i start using my 4g is like my battery has a leak... drains so fast.

Yeah I still have 6 days left in my trial, but im liking it so far. Only issues I have are signal strength. Guess I LIKE seeing full bars but in my house, backyard even, I sit at 0-2 tops. Tho my area is slated in the new June 16 LTE rollout (Menomonee Falls WI), im still on the fence because of the little to no bars issue. This is strange tho because even with this, I can get 1.9-2mb download speeds on speedtest lol
reason's to buy the thunderbolt:
(1) the charge is cheap plastic
(2) it took team cyanogen forever to get sammy phones to run CM
(3) touchwiz vs sense isn't nearly a fair fight
the thunderbolt is heavy, but it's a solid "i'm a $250 on contract phone" heavy
Thunderbolt..just the battery blows. but from stats and everything ive read id go TB
I wouldnt buy a samsung made phone other than the Galaxy S2 or Nexus S. The former wont be out on verizon until probably winter sometime and the later probably never will be (but you could buy the version made for sprint and probably activate it for use with verizon).

Thunder bolt is a bust

To: ALL
I got the TB first week of its release. I was its biggest fan, defending it, learning everything about it, rooting , roming, kerneling, tweaking. Everything like a normal flashaholic would do.
To set the Hate straight, I adore HTC because its rooted in my DNA and I support my countries products. But OMFG the Thunderbolt is a bust. I know our natural reaction is to defend it because most of us are locked up for 2 years, and maybe some even spent cash to buy this phone out of contract. God bless you.
But this phone has not lived up to the hype. not one bit. This is not the phone of my ****ing dreams. all i see is the potential for this phone to be great. While we are waiting for this potential to happen, other phones are slowly coming in and smashing our Dreams..
The sooner we can be honest with ourselves is when we can finally appreciate what this phone is. Its average, maybe its better then the older phones, maybe this was the next gen android, but this is the pre alpha next gen android.
If i was going to buy anything based on potential and speculation i would buy this phone for $100.. if i were to buy a phone of my dreams, then i would pay $250..
1st round BUST.
I like the TB but have three advantages over most people.
1. I didn't have any expectations going into the purchase. When I found out that Verizon was going to tiered pricing I just looked at the available phones and picked the TB. A colleague has one and he had good reviews. It replaced my ageing Droid Incredible and has done a fine job of doing that. Not having expectations makes a phone better. I didn't set the bar higher than the device could live up to.
2. I don't change ROMS. I'm happy with the stock phone based upon #1 above.
3. I'm in a situation where I don't have to worry about contract length. If I want to change in a few months, I will. It puts a lot less stress on me to make sure the phone performs. I'll probably have a different phone by the end of the year.
I love my Thunderbolt. Now that I'm running CM7 and a custom kernal it great. I had an Eris for 18 months, I know pain
Plus something better is always going to come along within months, it's the nature of the industry.
I have had my Tbolt since Launch and Im have been happy with it. I never experienced any of the issues that were reported around. Its done everything I could ask and running strong. I only rooted to have the wifi teather..
My only peeve with the bolt is that the screen won't turn off when I'm in a call.
other than that i am ok with it.
And i qualify for an upgrade within 6 months (didnt pay full price for the bolt either). hopefully vz will get a LTE nexus phone.

The TB is still the best LTE phone. For verizon in general though the DX2 and Droid3 are not bad options especially if you are not in a 4G area

damn I've never been so happy with a phone before, does everything short of getting me off.
I love my TB. If u think its pre alpha or whatever u can wait. But in the end ur always going to be waiting cuz there is always going to be a phone thats better then the last one.
So far the pros have outweighed the cons. Not many smartphones will deliver 35+Mbps download speeds. I at times get data speeds that is faster than most peoples home wifi. Of course its not perfect. It also has things I don't like. But I intend to keep it until the next HTC with LTE is released.

Add me to the loving my TBolt since launch group. It's still the best LTE phone on VZW IMO. That could change when the Bionic drops, but by then I will have been enjoying this phone for 6 months. I'm a patient man, but not that patient.

I've got no patience. I bought my TB on January and since I've bought a INC and OG Droid. I haven't even received the droid but I want a Droid 3 now. I'm actually thinking of selling my Glock for the Droid 3 but I know in 6 months I'll feel bad for doing it.
Edit: The Tbolt is a great phone I'm just bored already.
I got my Thunderbolt about a month after release and other than the battery life I have had no complaints. There will always be things that it owuld be nice to change on any phone.....(hence rooting). But even the things I can't change are still ok to me. I got in before the tiered plans started and when the bionic comes out I am seriously considering it but if I don't get that and I wait a bit longer these things I know for sure when I get a new phone.
1) It will be a 4G LTE phone. 4G is exceptional in the Spokane area and I am addicted to the download speeds. After playing with my sons phone and my wifes Droid X, I will happily stay with 4G
2) I want a same size screen. (Just cant imagine squinting my eyes to see my phone screen again
3) It will have to be a VZW phone because other than AT&T nobody else has as good a connection to me
4) I gotta be able to root it because crapware\bloatware sucks

Upgrade or Stay with the Captivate

Hey everyone,
My contract with AT&T just expired and I may switch to Verizon to go for the Galaxy Nexus or Razor Maxx. However, I like the Galaxy SII that AT&T only offers. I currently have a Captivate and love it. I just want to know if anyone has any opinions on the SGSII or Nexus. Thanks

I still have my captivate but it just collects dust after getting my att sgs2. I'm pretty unsure why you would even have to consider upgrading to a phone that is 100 times better then the captivate.
Well the Captivate was the first Android I had and it's so versatile. And I see developers are porting ICS for it. But I can't argue with the power and awesomeness of the SGS2
if I were you I would try an ics ROM. I would recommend docs Master ics (v3.1)
My cappy is blazing fast. I'm talking 0 lag!
MC 3 runs completely smooth with not a hint of stutter or lag. That's with no over clocking! When I oc/live oc it with nstools, I can get it up to 1500mghz.
Run it for a while and wait for the sgs 3.
Hope this helps you on your decision.

I'm loving ICS and the anker battery on the cappy, it changed my decision on wanting to upgrade now. My upgrade was eligible last Oct, but I holding out till summer when all the quad-cores come out (I HOPE!!).
Yea, I guess waiting is always an option, especially if more powerful phones are still to come! I'll look more into ICS and see what I can do, I'm on Serendipity 7 right now and it's pretty laggy, at least for me.
I went from a Captivate running S7 to a SGSII. To say the SGSII blows away the Captivate is an understatement. I have felt zero need to even root the phone yet. It is great out of the box. Fast, stable, great battery life. Not one force close since I got it 6-7 weeks ago FYI, still running 2.3.4 Gingerbread. If you get one, don't update to 2.3.6. It has battery drain issues.

FC out of the box was never an issue. Why anyone would buy a new phone that is only running GB is beyond me. If I was in a position to switch carriers I'd go with the Nexus, you're getting the good stuff that everyone else is just trying to catch up to.

Well isn't the sgs2 slated for an ICS upgrade? I know Samsung said that the captivate won't get ICS. And we all know how much of an ordeal it was just to get froyo, let alone gingerbread on it, so it'll probably be the same way for the sgs2, but it has better specs than the Nexus
If I were you I would upgrade in a heart beat. Hardware-wise the Captivate just can't compete with the dual-cores phone you mentioned. And the battery from the Maxx is a beast!
Keep in mind that AT&T is now charging doubled the upgrade fee (from $18 to $36). Switching to Verzion can easily get you free activation + free shipping via some online retailer in addition to their "Twice the data, same low price" data promo, which is quite a deal unless you got grandfathered with AT&T previous data plan.
I also loved the Galaxy S II, only downside is no 4G LTE with the exception of the Skyrocket. Rumor has it that Skyrocket HD is coming to AT&T, with a full 720p Super AMOLED screen upgrade from a 480x800. You might want to wait on that.
Just my two cents.

What he said
I still love my C(r)aptivate. I loathed it something aweful because of the utterly fail GPS, but all-in-all it's still a fantastic phone. Seeing that I have the LG Thrill as my main phone(I use nav a lot and needed better gps or i wouldn't have) which just came out and is still on FROYO and a phone that came out last July already has Gingerbread...It's nice to know that it is still supported. A lot is to be said about not having a contract being held over your head too. Personally if I were you I would keep the Captivate and leave my options open. Some awesome phones will be coming out Q3 this year. I'm looking forward to the Tegra 3 powered HTC Endeavor. Bide your time and know you can jump ship to another carrier any time you choose. IMHO
Yea, the GPS was a huge fail, I actually sent back my first one because apparently the first manufactured devices were "defective" but even after I got a new one my GPS didn't improve much. The captivate is under powered, but it sounds like some pretty awesome phones are in the works and not having a contract allows for some breathing room. I guess I'll just see which carrier releases the most desirable phone in the next few months or so and go from there.

No it's not, if anything call it "outdated." The device is getting close to two years old! When it came out no one was honestly considering a PHONE having a dual-core CPU. In all honesty they don't need it! Quad-core is just ridicules... The ICS ROMs we have now show that the phone is by no means under powered.
As to the other idea, all I can say is that AT&T seems to be getting more and more greedy, their practices more sleazy... Or at least being faster to jump on ways to improve profits and reduce costs, of which we the customers are seeing no benefits...

Improve profits and reduce costs as in raise rates and reduce services. Or Promise a technology, then abandon it before fruition. I liked the falsely advertising a technology ploy. I've been with this phone service since it was Cingular, which in my opinion was a far better company. It's been getting harder and harder to renew my contract. I find myself peering over the fence to see how green the grass is on the other side.

I know what you mean here... I've been with them since Cingular as well and I know the prices will go up over time, but their service hasn't improved one bit. One big bonus of Verizon is the coverage they have nationwide is FAR superior to AT&T's. When you have to sell a Microcell to imporve coverage in your customer's houses, you know you need to upgrade your service. Verizon will probably end up having the better LTE network too, as AT&T never went nationwide 3G, as Verizon did looong ago
I'm switching to Verizon as well in March. Why? Att and their throttling madness .I get throttle every month right around the 2gb mark 2 weeks into my billing cycle after that data is unusable. I just sold my Sgs2 skyrocket yesterday using the captivate until my contract is over .
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
I got the captivate the second day the phone came out, so I have the phone with all the problems. I ALMOST upgraded to the SGS2, until teamhacksung's ICS rom came out. It runs so smoothly that it actually makes my captivate usable! I would suggest waiting for the SGS3; thats what I am doing. Why buy a phone that has been out for a long time (SGS2) when the upgrade is just around the corner!
No matter how good these ROMs get, it is impossible to fix my terrible GPS, connection dropping issues, battery drains, and random crashes.
I just read an article about the throttling and how inconsistent it is at various data limits. I just can't believe they get away with it. It just shows how inferior their network is to Verizon if Verizon can handle it smoothly. Yea the SGS3 is worth waiting for. I think I'm gonna try ICS on my Captivate for now and hopefully that will hold me long enough. I just hate that it doesn't have a front facing camera.
Cappy still rules!
1. On stock ROMs - they don't cut it. XDA matured to fix all bugs and shortcomings of manufacturer ROM.
2. May be skip AT&T upgrade alltogether? See what they did to GSII Skyrocket and Note? Bastardized and downgraded to Snapdragon old chip.
3. Get GSII from ebay, may be? It is around 500 now.
