[Q] Looking for a good car charger... - Galaxy S I9000 Accessories

Hi I'm looking for a real car charger. I use my phone as a gps system with google navigation (wich is very good and free).
I Have a car charger but it doesn't work when I use the gps and increase drstically the phone temperature..
Some advices for this ?
Thanks.

I use an cheap, ebay 2 socket usb car charger and retractable micro usb cable. Works perfectly fine for me. The phone usually does get a bit warm when using GPS but not drastically.

thanks for your answer i'll try one

I use an old charger i had for my hero with a usb mini/micro adapter i got on ebay for $0.50 plus post.
Charges fine no matter what the use.

i use USB socket with stock usb cable~

Yeah he's right, switch off your phone, using IT KILLS YOUR BATTERY!!!
No seriously, just use it man, charge it as many times as you want to a day!! Don't be afraid to use your device to do the things it's made to do! Much easier to just charge your phone while using the inbuilt GPS rather than messing about with external GPS devices.

bluetooth or wired GPS?

Hi!
I am still unsure if I should get a bluetooth GPS or a wired one.
The wired ones are about half the price of the bluetooth at the moment.
I wonder how the USB GPS are powered? Do they need a seperate battery or do they get their power from the XDA over USB?
Can I put my XDA in the cig-lighter for power and the GPS in the XDA without needing any additional batteries?
Thanks for help!
Dominik
You cant use a usb gps with your xda, you will need a serial gps, I have been involved with gps navigation for pda's for some time now. I cannot see that a bluetooth gps has any advantage over a wired system if it is for use only in the car, the xda needs to be powered for anything other than short journeys so it is still wired even if you use bluetooth. I am about to sell my xda2 as bluetooth was the main reason for getting it however I think my xda1 with 64 meg ram and 256 sd card does all I want it to, I will be using a dirt cheap digitraveler gps which I can also use with any other computer with a serial port, if no serial exists on the laptop I can use a usb to serial adaptor. Having said all that, if the person uses the gps away from the car then bluetooth is a bonus as the gps is self powered, but so is the digitraveler, though larger and heavier it runs on 3 x aaa batteries and could be used away from the vehicle. Its different strokes for different folks so buy what suits your needs. By the way the Fortuna GPSmart and the Holux gr-230 can be used as a wired gps using a cheap optional cable/charger, or as a wireless bluetooth gps, both run at a fast 38400 and are very good at the task of locking to gps.

Hi!
I have an XDAII. Do I need a serial or USB GPS for it?
So, with that wired GPS, is the setup stated above possible? Like no batteries in the GPS, connected to the XDAII being charged by the cig-lighter itself?
If not, I would have to charge two devices at the same time during long travels....
Thx
Dominik
You could buy a cheap haicom gps, with all the serial gps kits you get a lead with a lighter plug connected, the same lead powers the gps and the xda/pda. Have a look here and use the drop down box on the haicom ad, choose xda, very cheap, very effective and powers both xda and gps. This is for use in car only. For less than £50. Also you can obtain various leads for it that will allow you to use it with another pda/laptop/pc etc.

Will it power and work on the XDA II.
Yes, make sure beams in unchecked under settings/connections, in tomtom choose tomtom gps then choose com1.

help with lead, not even sure what its called!?!

Hi
Ive got a emtac GPS bluetooth reciever and this comes with an in car charger. The charger lead splits into 2 with one side going into the emtac and the other should go into the XDA II
However the connecting lead is missing. So I need a lead that goes from the split into the bottom of the XDA II - I already have a XDA II power connector that goes into the bottom of the XDA so its just the lead to connect the 2?
I hope I have explained that????
Any help would be great
cheers

It would be very unusual for a bluetooth wireless gps to be supplied with a lead that links the pda with the gps, if you have the car charger for the gps and a car charger for the xda then all you need is a double adaptor for your lighter socket to take both chargers. If this doesnt answer your question then try here and look at all the different leads, if your gps uses a standard mini usb plug then you can use the Fortuna lead to power your pda and gps a the same time. If you are going to be using a cable that links both I wonder what the sense is in buying a wireless gps because it rather defeats the object.
hi
thanks for the response, i can see your point about connecting a BT device to a BT XDA with wires - sorta defeats the object!
However I suppose it is saving on chargers?
I already have a 4 way in car adaptor, but one is taken for charging my phone, one for my BT headset, one for the BT GPS reciever and the 4th can only be used for an actual cigarette lighter, meaning I am one short for my XDA
So if I can get the lead to connect the GPS power to the xda then im fully charged!
My car looks like spaghetti junction with all the wires!
cheers

My solution to the lack of aux jack on the car dock.

I agree that having an aux jack on the Nexus One car dock would be pretty sweet, but it is what it is, and I wanted to move on... Here is what I did:
Nexus One (duh)
Nexus One car dock (...)
Kensington LiquidAuxbluetooth car kit: us.kensington.com/html/14484.html
Micro USB cable
Plug the Kensington L.A. into the accessory outlet, and connect the audio output plug to your AUX on your stereo. The L.A. provides a USB port to use for the Micro USB cable. (for charging)
Plug the micro USB cable in this port and route to your car dock.
Once you pair your phone with the L.A. place it in the car dock and setup the audio to be whatever combination you would like. I personally use the dock for calls (because the mic is better) and the L.A. for audio.
One accessory outlet, (no splitters) one wire coming from it to the dock, audio routed through the AUX in your stereo, and (IMO) really great call audio thanks to the dock and noise canceling, which still works with the phone in the dock...
Just sharing my experience, YMMV, IANAL, OMG, WTF, BBQ...

+ 1. That looks like a really good solution. Another benefit you did not mention is that by powering the Car Dock with the Micro USB cable, you do away with the spiral lead that is on the Car Dock power supply. So easier to route and hide.
Any issues with charging the phone and powering the car dock? Isn't the car doc charger higher output than regular chargers and perhaps the one on the LiquidAux?
how's the music sound quality?

No issues I have noticed so far, there is no additional <warmth> on the LiquidAux I have been able to detect, and the phone charges just as quickly as it would when plugged in using OEM adapter. And yes, losing the spiral lead is a nice bonus...

Sound quality for me is great, there is no interruptions, etc I have noticed. But I suspect that this would be a YMMV kind of thing based on the car stereo used and the distance / path (if that even matters with the relatively short distance) between the LiquidAux device and the phone...

Another question for you... Does the remote work with the phone? I'm waiting for mine to get here but I had read from many reviews that the control did not work properly with the iphone, just wondering if the nexus one had the same problem.

awesome writeup... Even if this thing doesn't work to pickup calls I don't care, I always have a bluetooth headset for the car anyhow. I think I'll get an extra socket and mount it all under the dash out of sight.
Even thought you can plug in a wire to the headphone jack I want a solution where I can stick the phone in the holder when I get in, and pull it right out without messing with cables every fricken time... Most the time I don't plug my phone in right now just because of that very reason.
With a nice setup like this I'd plug my phone in every time I get in the car... awesome, Thanks!
Just ordered mine off amazon.. seems like a great price for the product.

The media functions work fantastic with the Nexus, the iPhone does not support track skip, where the Nexus does. I have not been able to get the phone button to start voice dialing like the iPhone does. I have not actually had a call while driving to pickup yet, so I can't say for certain whether that (pickup incoming) works or not...

I have call audio go through the dock, yes. The LiquidAux has a microphone, but it is quite far away from the the speaker's mouth IMO. Additionally, the dock still uses the extra Michael for active noise cancelling and is quite crisp and clear for calls. (I have so far made several outbound calls with great results.) The music pauses, audio routes up to the dock for the duration of the call, then the music resumed on the car speakers automatically...

OEM Car mount

Is there any benefits of the car mount specially designed for the infuse???
Also do get better gps accuracy with it?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Yes, the OEM car mount has a special GPS chip in it that allows for more accurate and faster locks......... oh wait.
In all seriousness, the benefits:
-GREAT build quality. You won't understand until it's in your hands.
-Samsung car dock app. Once you figure out how to navigate it, it's worth the download.
-Pair the dock with the scosche car charger and you'll actually be able to use Nav and other features on the phone and still keep your battery topped off. (Thanks Entropy)
-Mount it anywhere with the included plastic disk. (Adheres to any surface)
Thanks this really help

Is it adjustable in any way? Will it work with any types of cases? How about a simple skin like Zagg or Bodyguardz?
Because the phone is a large phone, the dock is also fairly large in comparison to other docks I've used.
It is fairly adjustable, but it is only plastic so it does have it's limitations.
I don't believe you'll be able to use any cases with it unmodified, as it's a pretty tight fit. I have a case for my phone that I just remove when I put it into the dock.

There's a possibility that even with a high-current charger, any of the kernels in use might still allow battery drop when combined with nav.
I really need to do some nav testing with one of my non-charginghacks kernels.
However - I love my car dock! It doesn't affect GPS reception, it's fully passive in that regard, but it's still great. My only complaints are that only the stock media app gets routed to the external audio, and outgoing calls only ring on speaker, not on a BT headset. I'm pretty sure these are fixable.
I'm debating picking this up with my FAN discount over my lunch-break. I'd deeply appreciate a response to my question/concern about BT usage. In regard to the following snippet from Entropy -

- my Questions are: Will it impact my usage (I use BT streaming for audio and BT for all incoming/outgoing calls. Works seamlessly as is, but I need a holder of some sort, AND I need to get around the nav-sucks-battery-dry-with-USB-cable-charger-connected issue!
Also:
Would I be better served with a generic phone holder, and a Samsung USB data/charge cable (on order) and a D1-D2 shorted USB adapter (my $1 Woot Belkin isn't, apparently - I understand the Amazon Scosche is and the Griffin dual-USB can be modded easily)
Is there a cheap AC-USB charger that works? My car has a very accessibly AC outlet, and only one cigarette lighter outlet!
TIA!
(ps: no mods/roots/other kernels for me for NOW! Sticking with stock.)

I really haven't played with Bluetooth much at all, and I haven't ever tried A2DP streaming.
As to charging, there is no difference between the dock and a D1/D2 short adapter, other than the fact that it'll take the phone about 10-20 seconds (i.e. when the battery polling interval is up) to detect charge input after mounting on the dock. There's stuff in the kernel that delays Vin checking for a period of time after any dock is detected. If you insert into the dock and then turn on the car, voltage is detected instantly. The reason for this is that the phone sees the resistor on the ID pin and uses this to detect a dock/charger, instead of D1/D2 shorting. In fact D1/D2 become L/R audio out when docked and the D1/D2 pins of the charger cable are completely ignored (they're not connected to anything, since D1/D2 of the phone go to the 3.5mm audio jack.)
Unfortunately, after further investigation, even with a high-current charger you are at risk of battery drain with navigation. This isn't a flaw with the dock itself, it's a flaw with the phone's charge circuitry design. CPU/screen usage seems to be counted against the charge current limit. It's just that the most likely usage scenario for exceeding 600 mA of usage is when the phone is docked - navigation with screen at max brightness. I'm not sure if there is any way around this problem without at least root.
Options are:
1) Bump up the charge current limit. I still haven't released this due to wanting to do more research. Don't want to fry people's batteries.
2) Limit CPU speed to 800 MHz when navigating... Nav works fine with the CPU throttled, heck my last device was a 528 MHz MSM7200 and it was fast enough for Nav. Some people have indicated this alone was enough to get them under the 600 mA limit. I think root is required for this. I'm not sure if there's a way to do it w/o root.
3) Combine 2) with an undervolt kernel.
I'm probably going to email some people at Samsung with my charging observations this weekend.

THIS!
Thanks, first of all!
And as a nokia user, I continue to be amazed what old Nokia's could (and still) do with lower MHz until the ultra-inefficient VM-within-VM Java (ick) Android OS came out and begged for more power (GHz and WH!)
Oh well, off that soapbox now - but I already miss my nice Nokia 6650 (200MHz, 20MB ram and seamless Ovi Maps with voice navigation and satellite imagery and traffic). Sigh.
But the screen on the Samsung Infuse beckons, and so does it's charger. I think I'll hold off on a dock purchase for now!

That isn't THAT hot for electronics. Especially if the sun was shining on the phone/dock. It'll probably come close to that even when fully powered off since it's black.

128F isn't that hot. 128C should've tripped a bunch of battery health alarms and probably would've crashed your phone.

Also, if the CPU is running and the screen is on, CPU and screen usage count against the phone's charge current limit, so will significantly reduce charge rate. (Samsung noobed that one...)

I can reconfirm the inadequacy of the charging logic - (just for another datapoint - Entropy's comments are gold here!) ...
With Waze or Google Maps/Navigation running, background music streaming (Pandora etc) OR a phone call underway (50/50) and a relatively high brightness setting the whole time (65% this morning - it was SUNNY!) my setup *LOST* charge on my 50+ mile drive (from 78% to 73% or so). All sound over Bluetooth the whole way. WiFi off, GPS (duh) on.
My Setup: Cheap Woot!ed Belkin 9V-USB 1A adapter with an Amazon-sourced Samsung original data/charge cable and the Samsung car dock.
Workable - at this rate it would lose ALL charge AFTER my rather substantial gas (diesel!) tank is empty.
BUT the new kernel or a charging fix would be great because then I don't have to remember to enter the car with a fully charged phone, or conversely, worry that I may leave, and thn run out, since charge was depleted en route!

Indeed, I answered my own question/concern here, so making a small contribution ...
I was impatient and picked up the dock and tested it on a long drive this morning.
I did NOT install Samsung's car dock software.
BT works great for A2DP streaming while the phone is in the dock. I don't care for or use the headphone out on the dock itself. Haven't tested it.
As soon as a call is made or received, sound starts to come out of the Infuse' speaker (presumably because I don't have anything plugged into the dock's headphone jack!). My car display shows the call in progress, but says it is set to 'Private' and gives me the option to go Handsfree. One flick of a steering wheel button, and all is well - sound resumes from the car speakers, and the car mike is reactivated.
TODO: Start music streaming via Bluetooth A2DP, make or receive a call and finish conversation over speakerphone (without switching to car BT), and then wait to see whether BT streaming resumes, or whether it continues to stream and playback over the phone's speaker.
I'm liking the dock a lot, so far. Not super strong, but nice-looking, seems like it'll serve my needs (as long as I don't break it!)
I wish I had picked it up with the 25% off email for accessories, but it isn't TOO pricey. And I did get the Infuse for 49, so ...
If you use SetCPU to limit CPU to 800 MHz when on AC you might be able to maintain charge. Someone else had success with that.
It's also apparently possible in theory to use a program called "Tasker" to implement application-dependent CPU profiles, such as drop to 800 when running Nav.
Once we get GB up and running and stable I'll work on stepcharging, it'll be a LOT easier in the GB kernels and safer than my current setup (straight charge current boost to 800 mA)
tasker is a nice app, but it is a pay app so it's not for everyone. i use it to set my phone to speakerphone when turned down on it's face and other things. i never tried the underclock with it, it i know you can run scripts with it so sure if you have an oc/uv kernel it is certainly posible, i have to check if there is actually a underclock feature in tasker for stock kernel users.
underclocking did help me yesterday, the phone is plenty fast at 800mhz and i was able to navigate with google and stream pandora the whole way home starting with a dead phone (i had to plug it into the dock just to turn it on)
i dont use samsungs car app, the normal home screen is just fine and tasker can setup your bluetooth for you when triggered by the dock if i remember right. you can use xcaliburinhands "galaxy dock sound redirector" if you dont use bt and want to use audio out from the dock.
in theory you can use an alternate home screen app for the dock setup with destop visualizer for larger shortcut buttons and use tasker to launch that for a completely custom car mode.
I am on MIUI rom, and just now I got the car mount. As mentioned, i cannot listen to music through the audio out port. Is this fixed? if so what I have to do? I dont have a BT in my car, so i cannot use bluetooth. Thanks in advacne
the dock is great if you like the car/home app. I have one, i use it on trips. The only con is that you have to take your phone out of the case to snap it in the dock.

I've been using this one, and it works pretty well for charging and using OTG at the same time. But it won't recognize USB devices unless the charger is plugged in, probably because it has a built-in hub.

Thank you for the replies and suggestions, looks like the one im gettting is the same one by @primaleph
Y OTG cables do NOT work with the Shield. I tested a bunch and it's either charging or gamepad but never both simultaneously.

Well actually they do, very2 slow, i hooked the OTG i bought to my charger, my tablet and my printer, then started doing some typing work while listening to some tracks on spotify max volume and at about 20% brightness,, after i finished and checked my battery it went up from 95 to 97, also tried the same with a usb attached, so for light loads it does charge but for gaming, even i lose charge when playing games such as vain glory while the tablet is directly charging so im sure its still gonna drain but probably not as fast as not charging at all, or another thing is not all OTG Y cables are configured the same me and @primaleph just got lucky with the ones we got and yours are probably the not compatible ones
A printer?
Anyhow, it doesn't show the lightning symbol if two devices like charger and gamepad are simultaneously connected. Whereas, using just one of the devices works.

Yeah i use an app called printershare, it allows me to use printers directly via usb connection cause i still own those old printers with no wifi connection costs 10 bucks for the license though, i tried with my old usb gamepad and it also charges and gamepad works, i think you need a more powerful charger, i use a tronsmart quickcharge 3.0 with a 2nd port with a max of 6.5V 3amp output which i use to charge it in OTG mode, 5V 2amp chargers should work but sometimes the power cuts out on The devices being connected, happened to me while on a boat trip, boring 2hr ride, me and GF wanted to listen to some music but we both own over the ear headphones not those little earphones, i charge my shield with a powerbank that provides 5V 2A output, plug it in the OTG and use a usb soundcard with with two audio jacks so we both could listen and throughout the trip there are times the soundcard would lose power which was pretty annoying,
Heres a screen recording where it is charging and i attach devices one by one to my shield tablet
