I'm new to the android world. I recently got a Samsung Galaxy S 4G from Tmobile and I wanted to know where I can find more information about rooting my phone. Also, what rooting would do? Basically all the basic information about how rooting will enhance my phone and what I'll be able to do with it that I can't do now.
Thanks!
you can search google for what rooting will do.
for the dev stuff on this forum, search for the bible thread and it will link everything you can possibly want to do with this phone.
once you read and have an idea of what you want to do, let me know if you have any specific questions and i would be glad to help you out...
please read...

HI,
I recently took this phone from my frend who brought this from US.
It unlocked to any carrier. I have read couple of places about S-Off.
Not sure what it is all about. Before rooting & installing custom ROM I need help from the folks who have done this. There is no removery mod installed on this phone. I dont want to brick this piece hence need rooting instructions from the folks.
Regards
S-on? Then use this.

Hi Nick,
I did read it couple of places but wanted to keep myself on the safer side. I know folks on xda provide real help in getting this done. This was the reason I floated my question on Inspire 4G Q&A. I had already visited Teichopsia link before.

In truth, we can't make the instructions any simpler than the step by step that was already beautifully done by attn1. If you read it and still don't understand, keep reading it until it makes sense and read the effin manual included with the hack kit. While rooting, if anything goes wrong, follow the manual and don't make any assumptions or redo anything.

Darunion said beautifully....the only thing that I can add up is that the Hack Kit is the only game in town. DO NOT try anything else or might end up with a messed bootloader. Read as many times as necessary and then go ahead...if you get stuck do not stop or close anything, just re read the manualĀ“s troubleshooting section and if are still stuck hit the IRC channel...but do not stop or atempt anything....welcome to XDA...:good:
I used Ace Hack Kit. It was actually surprisingly easy and didn't take that long.

Ok considering your situation you should root it. The process is very simple. It's a one click root.

Here's a video to help: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...m6DWCA&usg=AFQjCNEDETg2nq8rDBQWfKvlh9APF40fiw
It will root, unlock, install clockwork mod recovery, and superuser.
After that flash a rom. I will say I use the Rom called "Android Revolution HD 6.3.1" and can hotspot when ever I want, even without the AT&T account.
Video for that is here: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...4dTCCA&usg=AFQjCNE6rGAT6Z8pN9omO8UshYbzAup5cQ
As always I take no responsibility if you brick your device, or if you damage your device in anyway. Hope I helped.

There I know some of that information is of no use to you, but it has a tutorial. Figured that would make it easier.
Also hit the thanks button if I helped.

Hello! I have a simple question for y'all.
I have a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket that I recently updated to ICS 4.0.4 (I727UCLF6). I was wondering how I might go about rooting said firmware/whatever to run Superuser? I don't care for a custom ROM, just stock with Superuser access. I am familiar with using ODIN as I once ran a Superuser-enabled Gingerbread. Might any of you be of help and point me in the right direction? I would greatly appreciate it! Google has failed me in finding the information I need and it looks like a lot of the old forums are down.
If any of y'all can help, please do!

SKY ICS 4.2f6
Okaaaay... well, my apologies for ending up in the wrong forums. Sorry, I did not see a listing for the Skyrocket when looking through the different threads and such. My bad. You'll have to excuse me for not knowing my way around.
So, I see a fair share of folks makin' "oohs and ahhs", waving the good ol' e-peen about and in general being rather boisterous about a simple mistake... anybody here able to link me to something of use? Once again, I apologize for not being able to navigate the forum with ease. Perhaps a few more friendly faces and less folk simply looking to add to their post count commenting on the most mundane of errors might be of help? I would imagine there's got to be quite a few folk here who can be of service. Also to the poster who mentioned the SKY ICS, I don't think that's what I'm looking for. Though, I very well could be wrong. Still trying to get a hang of this. Perhaps a guide or walkthrough of sorts? As I said before, all I want is to root and run Superuser.
Thanks in advance!
No read the stickies up top read them all understand them then you can try and root
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
Check the stickies in this section on how to flash a recovery. From there, you really only need to flash the su files. A zip can be found in the Paranoid Android post in the development section that contains just the superuser files, but at that point you can also flash any number of roms as well. Your call.

Fair enough. I suppose I'll tear through those and see what's all in them.
Noticed that ICS is now ready for download for T-Mobile Galaxy 2, praying for a port to galaxy blaze, anyone going to try and port it?? If not, any opinions on best custom rom and tweaks would be welcome!!
Sent from my SGH-T769 using xda app-developers app
LOL, another thread for ICS on the blaze? I believe this has been covered a number of times now.
Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I understand it is possible to port ICS over from another phone however that requires creating a kernel from scratch. Doing so is extremely time-consuming and difficult and there's no point for a dev to work on that when we're slated to get an official release on our phone in the (hopefully) near future.

This type of comment/question doesn't belong here in the "Android Development" section. Please use the General section for this. Also please familiarize yourself with the 'search' feature. As someone else stated there are like half a dozen threads about this already. Also please read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1699450
I would also ask our community to NOT respond to these posts when they are in the wrong section. If someone can't read or help themselves by searching and learning from what is already posted here their question doesn't deserve a response. Not trying to be rude here, but seriously there has been 2 of these kinds of posts in the dev section in the last month.
Then don't be rude.

Hi,
has anyone ever rooted a T-mobile MOVE 2.2.2 phone?
I have found extensive topics about rooting other phone models, but found only one topic about the MOVE model: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16049789#post16049789
Could anyone confirm whether the "GingerBreak-v1.10.apk" actually works?

The MOVE obviously is not a very popular phone (given it is still on Froyo lol and I've never heard of it. I pretty much know every brand name phone so...), so it is doubtful that an actually user can reply
If you want to take on this tone, then allow me to ask you why you even posted this in the first place? You post when you need help, NOT to confirm if something is working or not when you have not even tried it. XDA is a dev forum and you will always be wondering if something (such as a ROM, recovery, mod) works, is compatible with your phone, if it helps in x or y way, etc.
The best way to answer your question is to try it yourself, and that is why my answer answers your question.
Given the fact that someone else used it and is the only source you could find, isn't your question answered? Thus this thread is useless and could you explain how this thread has any purpose?
In simple words, don't get fresh with any member who definitely knows more about rooting than you.

I recommend quoting people when replying to them. That way they get a notification because normally people don't subscribe to threads like this.
Again this is a question probably more suited to the HTC One section. However, I'll help you.
Rooting is just giving yourself (end user) elevated permissions. The actual root directory is locked for you to access when you get the phone. Essentially rooting will give you freedoms to install and work apps that normally wouldn't e.g Internet tethering.
To answer your question, rooting will not make it slower. Because you haven't really done anything to the phone other then change permissions. You won't even know a phone is rooted unless you check. Rooting can actually make your phone faster via kernel tweaking apps. However, To really make your phone faster you need to flash a custom rom (google it).
And your last question. This forum is for development. Almost everyone has their phones rooted with a custom recovery. That's why they're here
