Buy used 16gb TF+dock or wait? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After getting enough money (through the HP Touchpad fiasco), i can get the tablet I really want. Theres someone nearby willing to sell me a 16gb TF with dock for 425. Nothing is wrong with it and in perfect condition.
Should I get it because its cheap, or wait for the TF 2 thats supposed to come out in the next few months?
Im wanting to be able to use a tablet for school and because I'd have one within the next few days. This is the reason Id buy it now and cause its cheap.. I dont really want to wait, but I do because the hardware will be much better
Advice please. If you were in my situation

Something else- is there anything I should be aware of software wise, firmware or anything before buying a used one?

Try to figure out if the dock has the "bad" chip that causes battery drain. There's a thread out there that has more info, but the current owner should know.
If the tablet is a B7O, it may not be rootable (as of now), and B8O and beyond are all locked for now.
The TF2 may not be out until Q2 2012. Nobody has any solid info on it, so I wouldn't wait.

Owner said its B50
Is there anything that he should "look" for maybe model number of the dock? He hasnt rooted it yet, so my guess he doesnt mind the battery life on it how it is.
Thanks for this information!

So the B5O was the first run, I believe. Should be just fine, ask if you can play with it for 5 minutes just to be sure there are no physical problems (dead pixels, sticky buttons, etc.) The speakers may be out of balance, but I think that can be fixed through software. The battery drain issue is one where the dock won't let the tablet sleep correctly, it's a well-known problem that affects some docks (not tablets themselves).
I personally don't have or want a dock, so it wouldn't matter to me except I wouldn't spend as much to get both. I got my TF for $300 used, it was in like-new condition with the box and everything, which is good because I wouldn't have been patient enough to save up much more than that.
I say go for it, then root it and put CWM 3.2.0.1 and Prime 1.8.4 on it. That's just my opinion, of course. You can just leave it stock as well.

Alright, thank you again for the great info! Im not new to android, but new to tablets with ROMS and updates.
He said he bought it a month ago and the screen is perfect and no issues.
I want the dock or at least a BT keyboard because I find typing on tablets a little odd. Plus itll be nice to have the sd card slot and 2 usb ports Im not worried as far as battery- if my phone gets a days worth, dont see how a tablet cant when theres no 3g connection.
Whats the easiest root guide on here? seems a bit confusing with different methods. If I upgrade to the latest OTA (that fixes netflix) which method would I use?

I'd wait.. 425 for a used TF 3 months from when the new TF is supposed to come out... doesn't really seem worth it to me. I mean, I love my TF and everything, but I could definitely use something else for 3 months. Also, after reading about all the build issues and stuff, I'd be worried if my TF was used and I was unable to file a refund or whatnot.

Where did you read that the TF2 is coming out in November?
Regardless, I think three months is plenty of time to enjoy something, and a long time to wait. And it might be longer. And the first Tegra3 tablet might be loaded with bugs anyway. Might as well have a TF, use it until the TF2 (or something else) is actually released AND tested in the real world. Just my opinion, but I've seen a lot of people drop a lot of money playing the bleeding edge game.
As for rooting, try the one-click method first. If that doesn't work, use the "pure root" which is what I used. I actually don't know much about NVFlash at all, it might be a good alternative, but they all get you where you want to be and I am more comfortable having CWM like my phone has.

I read it was rumored to come to India in October.
3 months would be a long time to wait, and plus if I want to use it for school (taking notes, papers on the fly )
When the first android 3.0 tablet came out, there were a lot of bugs and even the TF at its release was buggy. So I wouldnt doubt if 4.0 tablets or TF2 had bugs. I wonder if the TF2 will be compatible with the keyboard dock now.. At least then I could sell my TF to eat up the cost for the new one.
Edit: Something else I could do and want to get your thoughts on. Buy a new TF off amazon $380ish, I know its new, but it may not be compatible to root. This way I know the battery is in the best shape for me to condition it initally. Then I could just buy a BT keyboard/mouse- both of which would be cheaper than buying the dock. Then again, I'd loose the 2 usbports and sd slot.
Decisions decisions!

The problem with waiting is thus:
1. No matter when you buy there is something better around the corner. When the tf2 releases maybe the iconia 2 or galaxy tab 2 will be a few weeks ago and have a better spec.
2. New released product is usually more buggy. If you wait until a device had been in the market a little while there is a good chance that many bugs or early manufacturing problems will have been sorted. Case in point, the bugged power chips on some transformer builds.
3. Tf2 will be quad core tegra 3. On paper it will be more powerful than tegra 2 but at release time little if any software will be optimized to take advantage of the extra cores. For the first few months of tegra 3 there will be zero advantage to having a tegra 3 device in daily use.
I know all this from experience - I jumped on a dual core phone as soon as they released and right now I cannot notice any speed advantage over my previous single core phone. Because I have a Htc Sensation with the new qhd resolution some apps look messed up because they haven't been optimized for the new display. Got the phone and then realized if id waited a little longer, which would have been fine because it doesn't feel any faster than my old phone, I could have jumped on a nexus prime. Also there are other masters which won't concern all users but for a habitual hacker like me they are annoying. Thing like the fact that no one has really figured out the optimal way to deal with the new dual core architecture yet.
Ok enough ranting about my problems, hopefully I've given you something to think about.
Edit: if you are going to get a bluetooth keyboard instead of a dock, you might wish to consider a different tablet such as the acer iconia - at least then you will get a usb port.

I went through and bought it yesterday Its really nice thats for sure.
Is there an option that turns off the automatic wake when you open the TF/keyboard?
Also, I didnt like the Iconia. The size is just awkward for me and I couldnt get past the screen, being able to see "grid" with the dots. I do like the usb port on it though, but i have two on the keyboard and SD car slot
Typing on this keyboard is super easy. Still hesitant to root it or not. Not sure if theres the extra incentive to do so.
Now to figure out the market and install apps (find them in the market first)

[Q] G Tab or just wait?

I looking to buy a tablet and from everything I have read and tested at Office Depot (viewing angles) the G tab seems fine to me. I am sure it will be faster after I root and load new ROM.
But with all of the new tabs coming (xoom and so on) at this point should I just wait. I know the xoom seems very high to me (800.00) not sure I want to pay that much. I know I don't want to buy another tab for 2 years or so. So maybe the xoom would solve that issue.
Thoughts?
David
If you are willing to root the 'g' tablet and install one of the community developed ROMs, I say go for it. The 'g' tablet was bleeding edge when it came out, is still at the head of the pack and will remain a strong platform for another year and a half to two years.
The price is right and unless you always have to be right at the bleeding edge, you will not be disappointed with a 'g' over the time frame you are looking at (and perhaps a little beyond).
Wait for Xoom to Come Out and Then Buy GTablet
Given how active the developers are, I'm betting that within a couple of weeks of the release of Xoom there will be a XoomLite Rom here for the Gtablet. So I'd wait a couple of weeks until the Xoom comes out. Take a look at it in a store and if it is really $800, unless there is something in the Xoom hardware that you can't live without, buy the Gtablet. Then put the ROM of your choice on your Gtablet (I use TNTLite) and keep checking back for what I expect will be a version of Xoom for our Gtablets.
If you are a tinkerer- get the Gtablet now. Seems all of the devices have quirks coming out, but one common thing is some form of dual core chipset. Quirks are there in one combo or other:
1. Overpriced
2. Proprietary connectors
3. No USB Host
4. No USB
5. Did I say overpriced yet?
Example is the Xoom. Costs $800. My Gtablet and 64gb iPod 4 cost $86 less than that.
My next tab will be the iPad "2". I love the app ecosystem and the game & app quality is AMAZING. I have my Gtablet and Incredible for Android fun and for Flash & internet function. Game emulators too.
BTW, my next phone will be either the Thunderbolt, Bionic or something similar on Verizon. No iPhone and the Xperia Play will likely have proprietary connectors, no microsd (Sony proprietary) and be locked down, so no dice for me.
iTunes may suck butt since a forced interface, but a lot of apps rock hard! Real hard.
Please forgive the slight tangent of my post.
If you're still unsure, then your best bet is to wait. You may even want to wait for the new 10.1 inch samsung tablet. I believe it will cost more than the Xoom but its another option. Here are some specs for that device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953341
I just bought one yesterday from office depot after looking at the tabs in general for awhile and
Buying a archos 7 first. I got rid of that because it wasn't what I thought. I think the g tab is the coolest
toy I have ever had. If you want just a giant cell phone without the phone then wait for the Xoom.
The new Elocity A10 is coming out, but the 4gb is more money than the 16gb Gtablet. For the extra money you get a (supposedly) better screen and backlit buttons. But, since it hasn't been shipped out yet you have no idea about the quirks involved.
The Notion Adam looks cool, people that have it seem to like it but who knows how long it will take to get your hands on one. I would wait and watch since it is a new company.
The Archos 101 has it's pluses like a ton of codecs, but it has bugs and also supposedly has a bad screen. The price is nice though.
The Xoom is $800 and requires a month of Verizon service. It is a great looking tablet, but if I were going to spend that much I could get a good computer with money left over.
You can wait forever for more tablets tablets to come out. When the iPad was announced I kept hearing over and over that a better, cheaper Android tablet was on the way. Here we are, nearly a year out and there is nothing that competes.
Were I think the G tab excels is price point. Especially if you can get the $279 price. It has a great following on this site, a good set of hardware and once it is rooted it flies.
Buy the gtablet...better yet buy two for the cost of one xoom! We'll get honeycomb too.
If you're willing to wait, also consider toshiba's tablet. http://www.thetoshibatablet.com/
I like that it uses a full SD Card slot for cheaper/larger storage options (>32gb) and has a user replaceable battery.
vpad10s ?
I've seen a lot of comparisons between the Gtablet and other tabs, but what does everyone about the vpad10s?
From the specs and all, it looks like a dual boot Gtab, which has its own appeals.

Dual boot would be great if the device would at least come with Android 2.2 but instead only having 1.6 makes it deal breaker for me.
And then there's the Touchpad, the HP/Palm WebOS tablet that's due out this summer:
palm.com/us/products/pads/touchpad/index.html
Was in the same boat...
I was torn between waiting and getting the G...ended up with the G-tablet and no regrets once I figured out how to encode high def video so it would play.
Wth TNTLite installed, this thing really hums, and frankly, I was expecting a seriously bad screen, and while it's not a 90 degree viewing angle, it looks fantastic when you're looking right at it (and frankly, if I'm using it, I'm looking at it).
Not to mention that at the price they're going for (and I had shipping and taxes to get to Canada), it is still soooo much cheaper than any of the alternatives with same specs (The Elocity A10 for around the same price only has 4GB onboard).
Hope that helps...
You can always wait for something better, but for us it was a matter that it seemed like a great deal for the price. I had the FCs with the stock TnT apps but after installing the vegan rom everything is great.
Would of loved to have gotten a Xoom, but considering we got 2 Tegra2 based 10' tabs for the same price, and they do everything that we need I am satisfied.
Thanks everyone for your posts.
I have ordered a GTab from Amazon (should be here tomorrow.. you have to love prime). I have not ordered a keyboard yet nor a sd card. But have a 6gb card that should work for now.
If all goes well then I will keep it. I will try the xoom when it comes out, but for the money and features of the Gtab and for the use I need (really just notes in meetings and browsing the web) I think I am good.
Another question: I want to use either a USB keyboard or a RF keyboard/Track ball) what ROM do you suggest?
And if I wanted to make a backup of the current ROM before I upgrade what do you suggest? Or should I just use one of the manufacturer ROMs listed in the dev forum?
Again thank you for your help.
Up until last week, I too, was torn between waiting for the Xoom, or 'settling' with a lesser tab like the Galaxy Tab.
I picked up a Viewsonic G Tablet at Sears for $399, rooting it 30 minutes after unwrapping it, I've no regrets. My reasoning was as follows:
1 - Wanted it to be Android-based, so no Ipad.
2 - Galaxy Tab at 7", a little too small.
3 - Tegra2 based, should be Honeycomb-ready, no need for a rear camera.
4 - Xoom, even if Wifi-only version is released, I doubt it would beat the GTab at price.
This should last me until maybe the next gen of Android tablets arrive next year.
Currently running Vegan 5.1.1 ROM, with full market, all the apps I could want. This is so much fun!
Really was an easy choice for me. Price plus fun of rooting and flashing roms while I wait for honeycomb. The gtab rules and my friends that get to play with mine can't put it down. I can't put it down ;-)

Gtab Vs. Transformer

Hey all, I have had the Gtab now for about two weeks and have been loving it. Running CM7 nightlies it has been smooth and crash free.
That being said I have been eyeing the Transformer. I am kind of a freak when it comes to having the latest and greatest when it comes to smart phones and when I got into the tablet market I wasnt sure if I would really use it much over my android phone.
Well after two weeks I can say I am hooked on tablets now and love having one. The only thing I am not liking about the Gtab is the weight is a little on the heavy side, it is pretty thick and the screen isnt that great but really doesnt bother me that much.
But being one who likes to get the latest and greatest the transformer is looking nice to me.
I am just curious if any of you transformer/Gtab owners have any opinions on if it is that great of an upgrade to warrant it?
I have read over at the Transformer section and it seems like it has its share of issues from poor construction to rom issues. And it being so new there isnt much on the dev side.
Amazingly my local best buy has them in stock but before I jump ship I was just hoping to get a few opinions.
Thanks!

One word - Netflix.
If you want the latest hardware/software and you want it to be the thinest and lightest I would tell you to hold out a few weeks for the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 which is lighter/thinner/faster than the new iPad 2.
If you do decide to go for a newer tab, be sure you're ready to dump that one in the fall when the Tegra 3 (Kal-El) tablets start rolling out. It will be a quantum leap forward (5 times the capacity of Tegra 2).
Have Both - Mini Review
GTab - Owned Since October of '10.
Ran custom since pretty much day 2. Started with TNT-Lite, then Vegan, tried CM7 (didn't like the phone feel), running VegaN Ginger RC-1. Love pretty much everything about the tab except for the screen, and lack of backward facing camera. The Screen also has its uses, as in public places, it has built in privacy.
I have crawled through every nook and cranny of the OS, as it is wide open, a hacker's dream. The negatives are the lack of custom accessories. My case is a Solo zippered folio, which works however adds bulk, The dock never officially got sold in the US, and Viewsonic / Tap N Tap not going to include Nvidia, or Malata has pretty much disowned us owners as there is no ginger hardware acceleration (Yet).
I cant wait for a stable Honeycomb port to bring it to the next gen.
Transformer - A1 - 1.5 weeks old
Have not rooted yet, as updates from Asus are still frequent, and root for the last update is not quite there.
Pros: Gorgeous screen, Honeycomb though not polished feels better than ginger, or froyo on the tablet format. built in GPS - location works better than wifi only on the Gtab.
Cons: Lots of apps do not scale, and have not extracted spare parts from the sdk yet. Google Voice app not available in honeycomb, honeycomb does not have SMS capability , No easy USB access, you either need a gender changer, or the dock.
I am happy, however not ecstatic.
I will be keeping both, as the Gtab will probably get handed down, but lets just say currently the A1 is a inside the park homerun as opposed to a Bomb over the green monster. and the Gtab was a legged out triple, or a standup double.
There is a Google Voice app available for Honeycomb, unofficially modified to work -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11955195&postcount=75 -- I use it daily for texting
I owned a gTab for a few weeks, and now own a TF. The gTab's advantages are a lower price and a USB port, and that's pretty much it (ok, it's probably better for tinkering too). Not knocking the gTab, it's a solid device for the price, but if you're willing to spend an extra $100 or so, you'll be happier with the TF if you're serious about owning a Honeycomb tablet.
However, if you're happy with the gTab and can live with its screen, Honeycomb doesn't have a whole lot to offer right now over 2.3, aside from some apps that are tablet-optimized using HC APIs. You'd probably be better off waiting for another point release from Google, and the inevitable price reductions, or enhancements added at the current price points.

Thanks for the link. Installed OK testing it now.
Thanks for all the tips and input. I think I will hold onto the Gtab until later in the summer. The Galaxy looks tight but after owning a Samsung android phone I swore I would never buy a Samsung product again. Will run this Gtab out until something in a descent price point and awesome features roll out.
Thanks!

Technology is always built to be disposable. I always keep that in mind & realize that if one can get past the "need to have" factor, then waiting, no matter how painfully it weighs on ones psyche, is not such a bad thing. I know people who feel that they must have the "latest & greatest", only to find out that they don't. Meanwhile they're spending cash like it grows on trees. Just my thoughts.

Not quite true in this case. There is a real difference in the OS. 2.2, or 2.3.4 (unofficial) are really phone OS's even CM7 feels like a phone interface even after Mad Murdock's tablet tweaks. 3.0 has a tablet feel, and better multitasking. That said different strokes for different folks.
If you can afford it then I suggest going with the transformer.
Transformer is definitely a better polished product. You can tell that they put a lot of work into designing it. Also, Asus is wonderful in their support of the device. Viewsonic just sucks in this department.
I'm keeping my gtab because it is a lot more hackable than the transformer. However, the transformer does look and feel better.

Or just wait a few more weeks for something better than that. Or wait a few more weeks after that for something even better. Or better yet wait till the fall for tegra 3 tablets.
If you want the latest and greatest, you will just end up not buying anything at all. What's the latest and greatest today will be out-dated by tomorrow.
This is why I tend to buy things slightly outdated for the cheaper prices. They work just as well.
Exactly, that's what I mentioned in my last post. Technology is meant to be disposable. There is always that "latest & greatest" moniker that hangs around & if one waits a bit before jumping onto that wagon, they can get that item at a better price. The other benefit is giving it time to have all the kinks worked out as well as having hand at any mods & tweaks.
I bought my GTab after researching here knowing that there would be better tabs over the Spring and Summer. However I also knew that these would all essentially be the initial tablet launches for the vendors and Android OS for tablets.
So I decided to get a solid yet cheap GTab because of how extensible the guys here at XDA have made it. I felt that if I waited until the late fall and winter season the true next gen of tablets would come out. I know at that point there will be the "next" thing on the horizon, but I feel it will be a good time to jump in completely with the higher end tablets.
I am extremely happy with the GTab despite the screen. My kids will get an excellent hand me down for watching movies and playing games on trips when I get my next tablet.
Yeah, going to hold on to the gtab and use the saved money to buy beer and bbq lol.

I waited past Christmas to get a tablet and it was painful. Checked every day for something to come out. Finally stumbled across g tab and pulled the trigger in February. Have not looked back or forward. You will never have the latest or greatest technology changes every 6 months point and case, those who bought the first galaxy tab now have an outdated item. The price drop astounding.
G tab beats the rest in price and useabilty, without regular inputs tabs are useless by any maker. I'm not going through a cloud or service to have full access to my own files. Anyway the single thing that satisfies me after that is hack ability. Every time I flash a new rom have a new tab therefore I have a device that never loses my attention satisfying the need for me to go out and purchase something else for now. When I get bored with G tab I simply flash another rom. I like the new rom flavor of the month club. More than likely i would be quickly bored with another tab. The next path for tablets won't be just for consumption already been announced. I 'm there already.

I agree with this guy. I understand the "if you always wait you'll never end up buying anything" argument. But I only believe that when you don't know for sure what is coming down the road. We know for sure that the Tegra3 is coming this year and it's going to be awesome. I think we know enough about it to wait for it. Unlike the people who are waiting for the iPhone5 because nobody knows when that's coming or what upgrades its going to have.
Gtab is my first android tablet. At first I thought I'll be using the tablet mostly for games and videos. Now I found out there are plenty of games that are simply wouldn't work on tablet (either crash or the screen is very tiny).
I'd wait until most apps are mature enough on tablet before upgrading.
If you upgrade now what you'd get is only a better screen and a slightly better build quality. Performance wise I think GTab is perfectly fine (and honeycomb is coming to Gtab as well).

I never used the USB port on my gTab, so I wouldn't say any tablet without it is useless. If I need a file off my networked drives, I can easily do it via a file manager, so the lack of a USB port isn't really a dealbreaker for me, and probably also not for most tablet customers (judging by the fact that the TF sells out immediately after it's in stock anywhere confirms that).
The gTab was the best value tablet until the TF was released. But now I can't really recommend someone buy one for any more than $250, but I would say hold on to the one you have if it's working for you.
Edit: Just saw that the new Toshiba tablet is due out next month, HDMI + USB + removable battery for $429. Only has 8GB built-in though, but it also has a full-sized SD slot, so bumping that up will be cheaper than microSD.

You may want to hold off on BOS until the notion ink devs get their hands on that new HC update that is supposedly coming down the pipe soon. Roebeet has put BOS on hold until something pops over at notion and he gets some decent stuff to work with for the Gtab.
I went from CM7 to BOS a couple of weeks ago. Took me all of one day to figure out I wanted my CM7 back on my Gtab but that was a no go because of the new v1.2 bootloader. I just went ahead and installed Roebeets Brilliant Corners for full functionality until BOS is mature enough for everyday use.
Stick with CM7 if you like what it offers, at least until BOS is fully functional. I just received my Asus Transformer earlier this week and I do realize what HC has to offer. I love it and I do want it on my Gtab as well, but will have to wait a bit during the bug squashing phase of things.

[Q] Will you be getting Asus Prime?

News are out with most specs detailed about the Asus Prime. Will you be getting one?
In my personal opinion, Asus Transformer is better looking (brown is more inviting than cold aluminum), it has better proportions, it doesn't look like iPad2, and 4 cores aren't necessary.
Why aren't 4 cores necessary? Because tablets aren't PCs. They are consumption devices and they are used for couch surfing and Gizmodo reading.
Games don't make sense on tablets either because the dynamics are so cumbersome. So even if the Prime will be pulling games like Shadowgun, is that really important? Every game I've played I ended up getting tired of trying to properly position myself so that I can used my hands for both controlling the game and holding my tablet.
Anyways, Transformer pulls HD video and really... what more could you need?
well, if it gets more power it needs more power...
so battery would be the first problem...
and, sorry, i dont need more power
(had my TF two weeks
and will you get the new keyboard ?? i have the keyboard of the TF101, never used it..
I'm waiting to pick one up, because after getting my tf101 at launch, the old lady wants her own.
Unless someone wants to buy my rooted b50 TF101/dock for the price 9of a Prime, I will not be getting the Prime. For some of the tasks I use my TF for, the Tegra 3 would probably be useful. For the cost it is just not worth it. If there is a follow up to the Prime next year or ditto the year after, I will ****ly then u0grade to the then current device. I'm waiting for the 3rd or 4th Gen, and to see if there [i[will[/i] be, before I invest further.
Right now the only reason I could see to upgrade would be if they blew off giving us ICS, and by the time it is worth it to me to upgrade for that, both the Prime and Android 4.0 will be outdated.

ACtually if you read the technical reviews of Tegra3, then you'd know by now, that the prime (tablet alone) will last longer on battery than the TF101 - well it's just paperform, so the first tests will reveal.
But I won't get one, maybe the summer next fall
just bought a secondhand transformer so I don't really see me getting another tablet until next year.
The answer is: maybe. I probably could buy it for my company (less tax to pay then) but I won't unless it's really much better than Transformer in regards to playing movies for example. As a game developer I also don't want to have the fastest device out there so I can test on more slower devices (I bought old used phone for that reason). But I want to make 3D games next year, so maybe targeting Tegra3 with it won't be so stupid, I don't know yet.
Well ... I really want to get one, but I will wait until it has been rooted, a 3G version is available, and other Tegra 3 Tablets are released, so the price will drop!
...But the problem when waiting for Tech always is, that you are then dealing with an maybe outdated product ... maybe I will end up getting a Windows 8 Tablet
The Transformer Prime should be getting Windows 8 / ICS Dual-Boot ... I would buy it immediately.
As I'm going to install ubuntu on my TF soon (I tried it before when it was not simpleton-friendly and you had to fix wifi and stuff yourself and I was too lazy to figure it out ), I doubt I'll need a TF prime to satisfy my curiosity with new things. But to be honest, I like the copper/brown feel more because when I see that kind of metallic finish, it just brings that disgusting metal on metal sound to my ears (or head, since technically I don't actually hear it, just the memory of it).

I agree, the brown is so much friendly looking. The aluminum is so cold and unpleasent, it also looks quite bad - not to mention how easily it should scratch.
The current transformer's back is so nice, its not cold, it doesn't scratch, its easier to grip and most importantly it's not a fingerprint magnet!
I would like a pink version. Pink is my favorite color.

Lol... I'm sure you could use one of the disassembly guides, and then have the case professionally spray painted.
The current dock keyboard won't work on the new prime?? I thought they said it would?

I have seen a lot of things saying it won't. Yet another reason I won't be doing business with Asus anymore
I'm passing. My TF does all I need it to do right now and I cannot see a compelling reason on the horizon to dump what works.
I got my tf on launch day. I think the prime is exactly what I want build wise. Much thinner, I like the look over the LV-ish brown, dock is slimmer. I really can't wait for it. People are saying its more expensive but its really the same price. It starts at 32 gb instead 16gb for 499 which was what the 32gb tf 1 was. I wont get it on launch day (can't afford it but would if I could)
When I got the dock for the tf I never thought I'd use for anything more than battery power and a stand to watch movies on in bed but the more time I used it, the more and more I used the dock and now can't see having one and not have a dock.

I have to say "Yes, please!" I personally don't own a tablet yet so for me I think it is a good buy. Also after using a friends for a few days some of the docs, pdf, spread sheets ran ok but, I wish it would be a little faster. So I am hoping that the prime will make some of that more snappy.
Been hawking the web just to find a preorder, i really want one. My wife already hates me due to my droid phone compaired to her Iphone. Now I cant wait to see how this stacks up to her ipad. She is starting to hate apple hoping this will be the nail in the coffin.

[Q] Would you recomend the TF101 after nearly 2 years?

Hello all
I have been given an opportunity to buy this tablet with the dock for not much money. It's second hand but used lightly and in great shape. The price is about 25% lower than the price of a NEW Asus Nexus 7 16GB in my country (no google play store here ).
My main concern is that it could be outdated. I had an Tegra 2 device (optimus 2x) and it was a pain to load any custom roms on it. I could only load Gingerbread roms on it. Sold it very quickly.
Is the TF101 showing its age? Does it run smoothly and are your batteries in good condition after this period? Any problems with apps? Games?
This would be my first tablet, so i'm not very much informed about them. I have been in the market for one a long time (1 year) and this is the first good opportunity I have seen. I would use it mainly for writing at college, some web browsing (flash running ok?) and casual gaming.
So would you recommend it now?
Any problems I should know about?
Only if you get it VERY cheap. And I say that as a TF101 owner.
The Tegra2 SoC is ****. It cannot play back standard 720p scene MKV-files without recording. Much less 1080p. XBMC and similar products don't want to support it because it lacks NEON-support which makes it easy to offload video-decoding to the GPU. Only thing I've gotten to play in a watchable state (but with occasional stutter) is Futurama.
It has also been plagued by unstable firmware updates, random reboots and sleeps of death. Asus has completely abondoned it and no further firmware updates are expected.
Your only chance of getting this tablet past ICS and onto JB (and whatever comes next, whenever that comes) is through third-party ROMs. If you get a model you can root. You may or may not be that lucky. Asus never unlocked the bootloader for the TF101.
So yeah. Unless you get it very cheap ($100 and less, keyboard dock included), I say no. Not worth it. There's much better things you can buy these days.
Its about 270 USD, but keep in mind that the nexus 7 is over 380 USD :crying:
Basically you will be paying 75% of the price for 25% of the goods.
You will be paying almost full price for a discontinued product instead of one still receiving updates, and one being ensured good support, both from AOSP/Google and from the Android community.
At this price, you will regret buying it.
Again: I say this as a current TF101-owner.
Get the serial number, and make sure it is Not a 3G variant, haggle it down to 200-225 and it would be worth it IMO.
ONLY if you rooted and made it custom though.
I have a N7, and I had a TF (until it died)
Personally they work nearly the same except for video playback. Videos with the proper kernel did work, just not HD without stutter. Games and other things are wonderful. (Of course assuming you rooted and rommed it, both of mine are/were)

I'm going to disagree with all of you guys about the 200 USD Price... That's completely ridiculous for an used TF101. I got my TF101 2011, last black friday, at bestbuy for $249.99 and with all the cases and other stuff I got for that device it came around $270. (This is without the dock and it was brand NEW).
Now this device is outdated and I see listing on ebay for the device used for around $75 with dock. NOT Worth it; you can buy better stuff.
Clocked at 1.5GHz mine plays practically any 720p scene release I throw at it.
DTS support can be a pain but other than that, no issues.
I'm not exactly sure what and how much of it you need to smoke to find them on Ebay for $75 with dock though, docks alone go for that price or above.
I bought my TF101 from a friend and we both looked at current eBay prices. I agreed to $200 for tablet and dock and I agree that someone must be high if they think they can get that for $75 on eBay. Just doing a quick search, I see one without a dock that's at $177 with 6 hours left and a refurb with dock at $275 - these prices are pretty typical of what I've been seeing, too. Refurb's a bit high in price, but not ridiculous compared to the $250-ish average we'd been seeing.
Additionally, using the awesome eValuator app, $220-260 is average and that goes to $280-299 when I search "TF101 and dock".
Even the ones that are broken and won't power on are still going for over $100.
To the OP, I would recommend making a choice depending on if you want a 10" or 7" tablet. I don't think 25% less is a great deal if you really only want a 7" tablet. I was actually looking at the N7, too - when I was shopping, I went with the TF101 because I liked the keyboard dock, I trust my friend that nothing is messed up with it, and I wanted the 10" size. I'd tried some 7" tablets and since my phone is 5" the 7" tablet wasn't a big enough difference to appeal to me.
I also appreciated how easy the TF101 is easy to take apart if I want to replace the battery. I think it's a great design and I wish newer tablets still had these features.
I've had this for maybe a month and I have no complaints. I have watched Netflix in HD on it for a few hours at a time and had no issues - I don't know how this differs from other video playback, but perhaps I'm not picky, I thought it looked fine (and there wasn't any stuttering). I don't really play any intensive games on it, so I can't comment on that. I'm on stock ICS rooted right now, but going to mess around with ROMs.
Best Android tablet from it's time, hands down!
If you can get a refurbished one (they seemed to be everywhere at one point) then it's worth it. I found the tablet and the dock at different stores for under 250$ two different times and haven't had any issues with them whatsoever (I have 2). B&H had the refurb dock for 99$USD I think newegg was 120$CDN... but that was a while ago.
I'm running JB 4.2.1 and overclocked to 1.6GHz, watching 720p mkv natively in mplayer without any lag or issues. The dock makes it a must once you get used to it and learn the hotkeys and the extra battery time kicks ass! The USB ports means I can connect a usb to serial adapter to connect to devices at work, no need to carry around the laptop... or just connect external ntfs storage or whatever.
Overall I'm very satisfied, the only "problem" I have is the lack of updates from Asus but oh well, there are some awesome devs working here to bring us the best. I'd go watch the other forums on xda to see how active other tablets/devs are, compare your choices to make an informed decision.
My wife owns a Nexus 7, I own a TF101 w/ keyboard dock.
I'd take the TF101 hands down.
That isn't to say the Nexus 7 isn't a wonderful tablet. But I use my TF101 almost as much as a work computer; the larger screen and durable build, the nice speed even if it is a dual-core instead of N7's quad, the 1.5ghz (overclocked via EOS 4 Rom) speed.... I love this thing.
I love my wife's Nexus 7 mainly because it is small enough to fit in some pockets and very light.
You have to figure out what you want from your tablet and proceed accordingly. I'm a firm believer that trailing edge technology often is a much better deal than chasing after the newest (the minute you leave the store it too is trailing edge!).
The price range on these is almost NEVER below $200, and that is without a keyboard. The poster w the neg comments early on is either badly misinformed about everything he mentioned or just trolling. Easiest way to test that thesis? Go to either Amazon or Ebay (w/ sales where time is almost out) and note the price ranges there. Even Craigslist, where I got mine for a steal ($225 w/ keyboard). Read the other comments, make a list of what you expect from your tablet, and go for it. Both tablets are great in different ways.
And did I mention my wife says she sorta covets my TF101?
One add'tl edit.... The TF101 has TWO SD-Card slots, a mini-HDMI output, TWO USB ports (on keyboard), and a few other jingles. Nexus 7, like its competitors (iPad, Nook, and KindleHD) have few to none of them. Just another thought...
Price range without keyboard for NEW is $150ish (Not misinformed at all). Newegg was one of the sites that had this deal. Also, I got mine for $250 new in 2011 (That was when this tablet was good/ at the top of the market)- it was a black friday doorbuster. The BB Mobile store near my house had stock when I went in.
There are better tablets out there that will go on sale and I personally wouldn't buy a USED TF101 unless if it was $100 or less.

Yes.
Newegg has the TF101 for $250 refurbished right now, and the dock for $99.
Big sales really can't be used to determine going price and market value. eBay averages are really the most accurate measure of what people are currently asking and what people are willing to pay.
I just cashed in a a Newegg super deal a few days ago, myself - and that's what it was, an awesome super deal that was way below the market price.
If a person wants to hold out for a super sale that may or may not happen that's their choice.

Remember, I am not from the States. Prices here (Croatia) are much higher.
For example, I can buy a 9.7 inch Prestigio multipad with 1 GHz and 1 GB RAM for 350 USD - USED.
I'll probably buy the TF101 I found and live with it. If not, I will sell it for profit, because I can probably make some 50-100 bucks of it.

Yes, misinformed troll creating and hosting CM-builds for the TF101 community, that's me. </sarcasm>
I'll keep my tf101 until I stop setting value in it, but Asus/nvidia seriously oversold the thing and I'd be lying of I said I was 100% happy about it when I got it delivered.
It gets better with Roming though.

you, my friend, are a liar and/or a fool. you will NEVER find a tf101 "under $100" unless it was broken. you will also NEVER see a new one for $150. period. look at ebay....cheapest place to find anything most of the time. good luck finding one with the keyboard for under $275. and good luck finding one without the keyboard under $200. USED. most of them listed that are $100-$150 are BROKEN. learn to read. cracked screen...chipped case....sound doesn't work....the $100 to $150 ones are severely abused transformers. if you can get one for $250-$300 with the keyboard dock, you have a good tablet that's worth the money. period. if you're not completely retarded and can follow basic instructions from this very website, you can then put the newest CM10 nightly build on the tablet, overclock it to 1.5Ghz or more, use "swapper" to make a 1GB swap partition, and you have - in theory - a 1.5Ghz, 2GB ram tablet with 2 usb ports, a keyboard, an sd slot, micro sd slot, hdmi out, the newest android OS....and in the 10.1" form factor. you can't find that ANYWHERE else on the market. people on here that say otherwise simply don't know what they're talking about. stock, it's a good tablet. modded, it's by far the best buy for your money and will smoke most others on the market that are three times the price (you know, the big goofy white ones) in performance, features, and all-around look and feel.
Just to update you guys... I have bought the tablet today. I like it pretty much. Finding the screen a bit awkward when using in portrait mode though.
It's kinda heavy, but I'll get used to it, after all, it took me some time to get used to a 4.65" mobile phone screen. I rooted it and I am still using the custom rom, as I usually do with all the stuff I buy. Eventually I will put a custom ROM on it because I had some serius hickups and a reset.
As far as the price point goes, I think that I couldn't have bought a better tablet for this price. I paid about 270 USD for it and it even has some of the plastic foil on it. Not even a scratch.
Now im off to find a custom ROM that has the ability to use all the buttons on the keyboard and thats overclockable.
Google Now and pinch to zoom in emails would be great too.
Thanks to all of you who replied, you helped a lot! Including the poster with negative comments.
I know you've already bought it, but I wanted to chime in that comparing my TF101 to my son's Nexus 7, I'd take the N7.
I liked the TF101 a lot, but as others mentioned, the stock firmware had become unstable. I had apps crash and freeze, even when I wiped and reflashed it. Unfortunately, the 4.2 ROMs are okay but lack some features. For example, I've seen some complained that the dock keyboard isn't fully functional. One of my complaints with the custom ROMs that I've tried is that Google Talk crashes anytime I try voice/video chat.
I'll still use, but I admit that I covet a newer tablet with the quad core.
Keyboard dock and Google Talk fully working here on 4.2, although I'd rather use Google+ Hangout for video chat.

Keep tf700 or wait for tegra 4?

I bought the tf700 about 2 weeks ago from best buy using the 50$ coupon that best buy messed up on. I actually bought it for 419 w/ tax going up to 450 which also includes the dock. Is this a good price for this? Well I have 2 weeks left for a full refund and I'm still debating if I should get a refund and wait for tegra 4 tablets or just keep it. There is slight flex on the screen which makes a clicking noise when I press on it but it doesn't really bother me. At first I was looking into ultrabooks but I gave tablet a try. Besides it's hard to find i5 ultrabooks for under 500. Help me decide!!

That is a good price IMO.
I'd say this is a factor of your budget and how much you use your tablet. I got the first Android tablet, a Motorola Xoom, on launch day. I had it for a few months and used it a lot then decided to sell it prematurely in order to wait for the next best thing which in my eyes was an HD screen. Well I ended up having to wait almost a year before I got my next tablet, a TF700. That entire year I was kicking myself for not holding on to the Xoom until I actually had another tablet in my possession.
So I guess you have to ask yourself how important to you is having a tablet? At that price I'm guessing you could probably sell it for a ~$100 loss a few months down the road. Who knows though the next generation of tablets might take longer to come out, like the delay we had on the 1080P tablets. With that in mind, if I were you, I'd keep it!
$450.00 for tab and dock?
I'd say that's a good deal.
If the click bugs you trade that in for one that doesn't click.
Just picked up a TF700 myself and I was literally asking myself the same question. I've got a little less than 60 days to return this to BBY if another tab is announced for release soon.
I guess, there are a few things to consider.
1) Is the better performance/battery life of the new device going to be significant? If they jack up the resolution like the N10, it will probably be closer to par with the TF700.
2) Will a new tablet have any hardware issues (e.g. TF-Prime GPS & Wifi problems)? The TF700 is a mature product and it's limitations are well outlined. If you buy a TF700 now, you know exactly what you are going to get.
3) What new features will be on this Tab, and are they worth waiting for? TF700 has SDXC, mini HDMI, a dock with full USB, Full HD, etc. It's a good feature set. TF700 is a bit low on ram with only 1GB, I'd rather have 2GB. It's missing an integrated LTE modem that is said to be in T4, but TBH, I would always buy the wifi version anyway. Better battery life, I wouldn't pay for the extra data plan, and my phone is now tethering fine (thanks TrevE). N10 like resolution looks impressive on paper, but not so in person. I have good eyesight, and the difference isn't noticeable. It's an advertising point over the ipad. Google needs to stop chasing Apple and build more hardware features into their tablets that Apple didn't already do a year ago, but I digress.
4) Are there any applications you cannot run on the TF700 that a new tab would fix? I picked u the TF700 because my Touchpad (running CM9) keeps crashing skype; which I use daily. I run a somewhat recent nightly, and since the Camera fix (thanks for that Dorregaray) being able to use skype at all is awesome. However, having to reboot the tablet 6 times in a night and constantly mucking up the conversation is real pain. Since using the TF700, I haven't had one hiccup in skype. That is worth a lot to me, but a newer tab won't make it better.
Anyway, those are the things I've been mulling over. I will need to see what the new Transformer will look like before I make any kind of decision.
Edit: FWIW, I paid $468 for the tab & a 32GB micro sdxc card. I think you got the better deal.
Have they given a release date for any Tegra4 device? I thought one was shown at the last electronics show but it was still a development model and didn't mention anything about release times or price. You could be waiting awhile and in meantime if you keep the TF700 start stashing away some money monthly for the next wave of tablets. That could help on any loss you take or cover the difference to a model with more storage.
----------
1 - I don't think anyone can tell what the performance and battery life will be like right now. New devices and cpu's are marketed as more performance while reducing energy needs but the tech community needs products to test before accepting what is said as fact. Are Tegra4 chps supposed to run at the same power that today's Tegra3 chips do but have the better performance? That is a performance improvement while reducing the power needed if they were to make a Tegra3 to equal that performance. Someone may have a better answer regarding power saving but remember a bumped up screen size will probably draw more power anyway.
2 - Again probably hard to answer. Until the product hits the market we really won't know how it performs and what problems it may or may not have. It is a risk you take by buying the next and greatest device. Prime was the next and greatest device and we know how that turned out. We can only hope they get the message after 3 devices that they need better I/O components.
4 - As far as applications I think many people have issue with games that are released or already out and "not supported" by our device. It will take some time once a new device comes out for companies to tweak the code or whatever they do to have the games run on the device. That is done on their whim. Why some haven't not done now on the TF700 (Gameloft and EA) is a question I don't think anyone truly knows. Some guess it's screen resolution and they don't want to change the code to render the graphics properly for our device.
But really you can wait and wait and still not be satisfied because something else is a few months away. This technology is moving fast.

Well, I had really wanted a "Wayne" (Tegra 4) device, and was waiting for that to launch to replace/augment the touchpad. The marketing slides showing kepler tech integrated into the SoC is actually a little bit exicting to me. However, I took advantage of a time limited offer to get the TFI at a reduced price. I use google docs for invoicing clients, and the Touchpad wasn't handling that well enough for me to do it on site. I found myself just waiting to get home to do it & emailing an invoice back. The TFI with the keyboard dock provides an excellent solution, and I had considered getting an ultra book for this purpose, but at about half the price of the ultrabook I was looking at, while fulfilling essentially the same purpose, having the same size profile, and better battery life, well it seemed like the better bargain.
That said, if I could get my hands on a next gen transformer within the next 60 days, I'd likely trade this in, in a heart beat.
My opinion the TF700T is viable for a while longer.
Glad the FHD tabs didn't shoot of into a numbers game as quick as I thought they would.
All I can say is after the "lobotomy" lol...my tablet has been a satisfying adventure.
It's smooth no jitters, games well (light gaming), plays my Xfinity downloads without a hitch, wifi connects stays connected, gps is quick,
browser is hanging in there...etc.
Just for a bit of comparison:
I've side by sided the tablet with my 2 year old HP AMD A6 notebook, and for what it is the tab has about the same amount of annoyance that a Win7 notebook has.
Not comparing Windows to Android just noting all devices big and small can of course suffer glitchiness.
Once the system settles in and with a little restraint as far as collecting\installing poorly written apps the Infinity remains a buy at least for me.
Hopefully when the newer tabs start popping perhaps some of us hold-outs will benefit from a much better selection of HD tablet applications.

How did you get the 60 day refund period? On my best buy receipt it states 30 days hassle free returns. Also it's a little weird that my tf700 freezes and randomly reboots. It doesn't do it frequently but once in awhile it does that.....very weird. This is actually my second tablet because the first one had slight flex but the current one actually makes a small clicking noise too. Honestly it doens't really bother me but ASus def needs to work on their quality control
Personally, waiting for the next tablet from ASUS (I assume you want a Transformer tablet) will be a very painful experience. Our tf700 was announced at CES 2012 (in January 2012), but only became available for sale at least 4 months later (depend on your location). Given the fact that ASUS has not announced any successor to our Infinity yet, I am inclined to believe if there is a Tegra 4 tablet from ASUS, it will only be available to us on the second half of the year. I have been waiting for the Transformer Book for many months but it is still not available. To me, waiting for something that is not even announced yet is a waste of time and effort.
I would strongly reccomend this tab to anyone who needs something with similar functionality to a netbook or ultrabook but I am looking forward to see what will come next. I would love to see something with a little more power hit the same nitch and with about the same price point... I'm actually waiting on the razer edge tablet to see what it turns into. anyways, I plan on hanging on to my TF700 even if I do get an ultrabook or the edge.

How did you get the 60 day refund period? On my best buy receipt it states 30 days hassle free returns. Also it's a little weird that my tf700 freezes and randomly reboots. Premier Silver. Drop enough cash at best buy and you get side benefits, like a doubled return period. Most of the the other benefits are less useful. I don't bother with the complimentary Geek Squad services, for example. Even if I wanted or needed their services (I don't), I still wouldn't use it. Mostly, that's just an opportunity for them to come into your home and look for things they can sell you.
Honestly. ...maybe a extra gig of ram would make this tablet perfect for me. The resolution is ideal for me and the speed is great (running CleanRom) and it does what I hope to get from it. And I use my note 2 for the extra stuff (multi window, nfc sharing etc). And to top that, the mobile giants still have not made 100% use of the quad core as it is and until then, asus infinity is a keeper.

Tegra 4 isn't shipping until QTR 3 2013. Given that time frame, I'm reasonably happy with my purchase. If the SoC isn't even shipping until then, you won't see devices until QTR 4, and that's nearly a year away. No doubt there will be better performers from Qualcomm sooner than that, but even so, I'm happy with the device I have for now.
searched but haven't even found rumors on a successor - had the TFPrime before and since it got nicked I am waiting for sth new to play with.
Have started considering the Samsung Tab Plus (whenever announced) given the higher res. Still seems that the TF700 has enough muscles and the add keyboard (+battery) is clearly a plus...
Anyhow - have there been any news on the TF700 successor that I missed
Its becomming a bit rusty given the time its already in the market

I have to agree about the extra gig of ram. But in response to the OP's question, yes that is a very good price. You could always dualboot it with rabbits' linux so as to gain some of the functionality that you would get with an ultrabook. The infinity will not become redundant for a while yet in my opinion so I say go for it.
For tablet with awesome dock integration the tf700 cant be beat. You also got a great deal on both. As far at Tegra 4 devices in particular Asus ones, no one knows yet when they will actually release one so you will have to play the waiting game. Vizio is the only one I know of that is coming out with one but not sold in the U.S. and doesn't have a keyboard dock option.
As someone mentioned the tf700 is a good laptop or netbook replacement. So if you're not going to play high graphic games on it like gameloft games then its a good tablet. But I do recommend you unlock and install custom rom on it as it lags quite a bit in stock form.

The price is good, considering you got the dock with it.

Unless the device has a battery-powered dock, I'd suspect battery life is going to be on par at best -- expect it to be worse. This may not apply if the new device carries one of those funky new battery design which last for a week and are charged in 10 minutes, but those will only get on the market in about two years, they reckon.
2) Will a new tablet have any hardware issues (e.g. TF-Prime GPS & Wifi problems)? The TF700 is a mature product and it's limitations are well outlined. If you buy a TF700 now, you know exactly what you are going to get.

Obviously true, and very significant remark. Any device will have its issues, and given the fact that the TF201 suffered from some of these as well, I'd not expect the next Transformer to be faultless either. :S

And the N10 has both QA and availability issues, for example.
Following your digression for a bit: Apple had already lost the innovation game in the tablet and smartphone worlds a few years ago. All they have done is increase screen size, and (sometimes) resolution.

If anything, the older device will probably support more apps altogether -- if you have experienced the transitions from Froyo to Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich to Jelly Bean, you have noticed that we lost a lot of apps along the way that were pretty good in themselves, but just weren't given the TLC to update them to function on the new version. Backward compatibility is less of an issue when the programmer takes it into account when developing his/her app, but too often an app is just hacked together and subsequently, essentially, abandoned.[/QUOTE]
