[Q] usb memory card reader ? - WebOS Software and Hacking General

Hi!
i'm a photographer and would be please to directly read my photos on the touchpad with and usb memory card reader ... any project seen on that ?
Fred

I would also like to know about this.
SENT FROM MY DINC2 RUNNING CM7 overclocked to 1.6ghz

I'm also a photographer so this would be very useful for me. It'd be great to be able to backup an SD to the Touchopad when on location.
The other option I'm considering is an Eye-Fi SD card or two so I can wirelessly transfer images. It should work.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'll wait a while to see if it can be done before investing in an Eye-Fi card.

It actually might be possible there is a thread on it at precentral

It's definitely possible, people are doing it.
It just requires several cables (one an OTG), an AC-powered USB hub and your time. I'd rather be able to just plug in one cable/device.
We have the port, just need the OS to use it correctly. As I understand it, USB is USB - data-wise. Maybe one of the talented PreWare devs can write a patch we can load eventually.

Help with USB mass storage

Hi all.
I have a problem with the mass storage hack that we use to convert WP7 to a mass storage device.
It worked for me initially but no more.
Anyone else have this happen to them and more importantly, anyone find a fix for this?
If this is in the wrong place, my apologies mods.

Maybe the Zune software update "fixed" this.
Do you have WP7?
Because I haven't heard any of the other users over in the hacking section mention this.
Read my signature.
I don't think a lot of people use the USB mass storage hack, honestly.
Oh well, I'll have to do some intensive searching tonight.

Like I said, it stopped working.
I also got it working again.
As it turns out, there are multiple places you can modify the registry and you simply have to modify them all and see if it works.
For me, I have 4 control sets so I had to modify all of them and it was the last one that worked.

USB, not SD
i was able to find it after some searching. i need to root and install the 1.4.0 kernal than flash to 1.4.1 and use a usb host adapter. thanks for the replies guys
And make sure the cable is an otg (on the go) cable as it has an extra pin (I think) which lets the xoom know its hosting
Can't vouch for this one working but it shows the kind of thing

USB and SD Card

Has the xoom come out with the software update to use the media card yet? if yes, how is the experience for reading from and writing to the card. Can you watch a video that is on the card?
Also can an external harddrive plug into the usb and can read from and write to the external?
Thanks
Are you rooted?

The answer to all of your questions is YES.
The most recent update enabled read only access to the external micro sdcard UNLESS you are rooted. Then you can have read/write access.
IF you are rooted, you can use the Xoom in usb host mode with a usbOTG cable and access (read/write to) thumb drive, external hard drive, etc, as well as use usb keyboard, mouse, controller, etc.
Wait, without root, you can still use your USB controllers, keyboard and mice. Also without root, you will be able to play videos off your USB drive connected via OTG cable. You won't be able to write to it.
I have not seen one compelling reason to root yet. My Xoom does everything just fine stock.

Great! I'm glad to hear it.
Hi,
I've a Xoom 3G w/ Tiamat 2.2.1..... I do plug devices on my usb port, but nothing happens. When, using the OTG adapter, I plug a usb connected to the computer, then the computer can read the contents of my xoom (so, I think that my otg adapter, which by the way has a Motorola symbol and SKN6252A writen, is working properly).
What am I doing wrong?

So if I have video file that I want to play on my xoom. I should copy to a SD card or thumb drive. If thumb drive I need to have a OTG cable to connect my xoom to my usb drive? I am not understanding and I am at work so my google and browsing is limited (i am just glad they let me have xda).

Yes, you can copy a video to your sdcard and watch it or onto a thumb drive or HDD and connect with an OTG cable. There are a couple of free apps that help with host mode.
I use DVD Catalyst to convert my ripped dvds to watch on the Xoom and it works great with my 32gb class 10 sdhc card.

Are you rooted? If you are rooted and are having trouble using usb host mode, there are some things you can do to help it along. To my knowledge (which is admittedly limited, as I been rooted from day 2) you can't use usb host mode with out a custom kernel or rom which allows it. Stock doesn't give this access as far as I know. BlazinGTI says it's possible, and if so, that is great!

Isnt that implying that without rooting the xoom, you can access these features? Perhaps he meant, the opposite

I seems that he was telling me that I was incorrect to say that this was only possible once rooted. I don't think he's right, but I could be the one that's wrong...

i think you are correct. i dont think these things are possibly without rooting the device.
Wasn't telling anyone that they were wrong. But I am able to access my thumb drive READ ONLY with the OTG cable. Which, for me, works.

but are you rooted? and what thumb drive are you using? how is it formatted?
I don't think I understand this completely, can someone please explain? Can my completely stock xoom read/write a micro sd card, and does the micro sd card have have to be formatted in any way? Thanks in advance.

Your stock non-rooted Xoom should be able to read from micro sdcard to play music/video files, etc. I don't think writing is possible. I've never had to reformat but I think fat thirty two should wouk just fine.

How to use USB OTG devices

Hey everybody so I have a question about external storage. I sadly bought the 32gb as it was the only one in stock but I wanted to take advantage of external storage. In the box there is a USB-C converter thing that will let you plug in a usb but how do I transfer apps and stuff to it. I have root but it won't let me move apps and stuff. Or does anybody know a better accesoriy I can buy that will work like usb-c to microsd? Thanks for any help!

By the way, you didn't do anything special by getting a Google store version pixel. I have RMA'd twice with Google and had a Verizon pixel both time. All you have to do is message them in the settings. It's nothing special.

What do you mean you can't root with a Verizon version? Besides what does it have to do with the USB-OTG

I'm not sure exactly what it is you're trying to do but if you just want to copy files to it, it's as simple as copy and paste. You can't move apps to it. If the drive wasn't connected, the app wouldn't be available. You can use it for TWRP backups, copy files to it from your phone, copy files from it to your phone (that type of thing) but you can't move apps to it.

Question Problems with Android File Transfer

Hi, I have a Mac and a new Pixel 7 Pro, but have been having problems getting the Mac to access the phone as a USB device via Android File Transfer. I started using Google Drive to transfer music but everything just lands in the Downloads folder. Then I found that the cable you use makes a BIG difference. Suprisingly I have been results using a Kindle cable with an Adapter! Anyone have similar experience or better suggestions for File transfer? Photos I can do Via Google Photos & documents/Ebooks via G. Drive, it's the music files that are troublesome...
Cheers, Greg.
I've read that Mac users were having success using USB hubs. If you have one around might want to try.

On your Mac, download Macdroid. Works every time now even with a type-C to type-C cable.
Also if you plan on using Android Flash Tool or Pixel Flasher, you will still need a hub for a type-C to USB-A cable.
MacDroid, have not heard of that one, will check it out, thanks...

OpenMTP ( https://github.com/ganeshrvel/openmtp ) and MacDroid is the best option
I still lean towards OpenMTP because it's free. Donated to the dev already tho, such a good app deserve appreciation.

Exactly. Hahaha. Way too much when main purpose is simply a file transfer.
Google messed up big times with AFT tho. If they want to sway more users from apple ecosystem, they need to make their platform work together better with apple one, but instead, they put halfass*d effort by never updating their app, and let 3rd party dev do the job for them.

Thanks mate for this recommendation. Was forever stuck in trying to connect my Pixel to my Mac. Strangely Android File Transfer was able to identify every other Android device except for Pixel. Finally, gave OpenMTP a try and it worked in one go directly via a type-C to type-C cable [just had to uninstall AFT as it was always conflicting with OpenMTP].
Been using a chunky USB C to USB C cable to connect mine to my MacBook.....works most of the time. I have always found AFT to be flaky on the Mac.....and temperamental.
I also have an Xperia 1 IV and luckily Sony make Xperia Companion for Macs which works a treat
