I have a Samsung Charge, and I have noticed that every time I receive a new GMail message, I get two notifications.
I started turning off various notification sources, but I still get an audible ring & phone vibration whenever a new GMail message arrives.
Where is the mystery / duplicate notification coming from?
Thanks,

Which notification sources have you turned off?
The GMail app has its own notification source. And, I *think*, you can set it per account (not sure).
There is also Sound setting Notifications, not sure if GMail leverages that or not.
Are you using any third-party email applications?

I have my GMail set for "Email Notifications" disabled. I would think that would be enough to prevent getting GMail notifications.
I also have ADW Notifier installed, but it doesn't really have anything about displaying notifications other than the number bubble. Regardless, I uninstalled ADW Notifier, and didn't see any difference.
I also have K-9 Mail. I turned off all notifications on that, and also saw no effect. K-9 doesn't even interface with my GMail, so I don't see where it would make a difference anyways.
I don't have any other apps that should be associated to my mail programs.
Bump.
I have found that I only get the "Notification That Can't Be Killed" now just with new GMail messages. No other "mystery" notifications are occurring.
To see if I could fix this, I started using the TouchWiz Email application to consolidate all my email accounts, including GMail. I got rid of my K-9 mail app.
Now, I get a silent GMail notification from the TouchWiz Email app (which is what I want), but it seems like I still get an audible default notification tone from Google's GMail application whenever new GMail arrives.
I can't figure out why the GMail app Notifications are occurring. I think I have them all disabled, but I must be missing something ...
Please help ...

I have found one solution to fix this problem, though it shouldn't be necessary:
I purchased "Bloat Freezer", and "froze" the Google Gmail system application.
I'm curious (though, I didn't see many responses to this thread), has anyone tried turning off their GMail notifications in the Google GMail app?
I am wondering if turning off GMail Notifications even works on the SamChg.
I'll try later this evening when I'm not at work.
I actually always run my phone in silent mode, I am kind of against ringtones, chimes, etc. and thus have never had any issues with Gmail notifications because I've never needed to really turn them off.
I'll report back.

Thanks, burningembers! I'll be interested in what you find out.
BTW, I don't know if this is important, but I am running the Debloated v.4 ROM.
Sent via my Borg implant over the VZW network.
I have another nugget of information on this problem.
I unfroze the GMail application, and set my SamChg to sync my GMail again. However, in the GMail application, I set a different notification tone than the default notification.
Now, when I receive a new GMail, I get 2 audible notifications: One for the newly selected notification tone in the GMail application, and a second tone that is my default notification tone. Sometimes, they will play simultaneously.
I'm guessing that undesired, second "default" notification tone is generated as a result of the Google "account sync" itself.
How can I turn this off? And, again - Can anyone test this out for me to see if it is a global problem, or just my configuration?
Thanks!
I've noticed that sometimes when I get a message, the messaging app doesn't show any notification of it. Notifications are on of course, I'm just using the stock messaging app. The only way I realize I receive these messages is that I have my vibration for new messages done by Tasker, which still vibrates when the messaging app fails to notify me. It seems to just miss messages randomly, maybe the messaging app is being killed due to low memory? I don't have a task killer running.
Is there any way to fix this?

What are you running? What rom, what mods have you done?
I'm running NexusBeam 4.1, with eugene's kernel, no other mods
I have the same problem. I'm running stock ics 4.0.3
I'll get text messages but it wont notify me even though i have notifications turned on in the messaging app settings.
I'm guessing this is a bug with the Samsung calendar. I've been using the Google calendar since I've had an Epic Touch (S2) and had this issue on that phone also. After installing the Google calendar, I disable the Samsung calendar by going to Settings -> Set alerts & notifications -> Off. The problem with this is that every time I reboot, the setting resets to "Status bar notification". Because of this I end up with double notifications. Is there any way to make this setting stick? I'm thinking I probably need to uninstall the Samsung calendar or have a script run at boot (Tasker?).

You can go into settings - application manager - then disable calendar
or
just use root browser and change the touchwiz calendar SJFKDL.bak
I knew it had to be something simple. Didn't even think to look in the application manager. There is a check box for Show Notifications. Unchecked it and no more double notifications. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
This isn't a permanent fix unfortunately! I'm having the same trouble and every morning or throughout the day I have to repeat that process and it doesn't stay disabled. Please advise ASAP
Running Adrenaline 2.3. Just did a clean flash to fix some issues. I installed the Facebook app and it's showing the number of notifications on the app. It never used to do this. I have all notifications disabled in the app and I've turned off notifications in App Manager for Facebook as well. Not a big deal, just a nagging issue, but if anyone has a way to get rid of this I would appreciate it.
I've had an issue for a month now, which started as
- Gmail notifications not appearing in my bar or lockscreen, then weks after
- Hangouts not notifying me of push messages, and now
- Outlook (new install) not providing any notifications from day 1.
I looked everywhere and found unrelated issues:
- no push notifications,
- delayed push notifications,
- Google issues with some push notifications...
Mine is specific to:
- I get a vibration of a push notification (not sure which - Hangout, Gmail, or Outlook)
- wake up my phone to see a blank lockscreen
- unlock phone to see no notification
- access each of the 3 apps mentioned to see where I just received something.
- That something is unread, and newly received, so no, I didn't just syn by opening the app. it was there waiting for me.
- I did get Facebook messenger, LinkedIn and various other app notifications though... :/
Today I solved the issue. What is it? Not Light Flow, Not Buzz Launcher, not any specific app I installed. Android Marshmellow 6.0.1 running stock MMB29K.G390FXXU1BPLB from Samsung.
Going to the notification settings (found when you drop down the notification bar at the bottom left, you have the ability to toggle specific apps notification. Seems some unrelated apps that I didn't want notifications, which I had selected "block" had impacted my vital GMAIL. Hangout, and Outlook. I wouldn't think the apps were the issues, but the controller for the block/unblock ability. So if you have stumbled upon the same issue as me unblock the apps to fix the issue. Very frustrating month for me...
