East Coast Earthquake: AT$T 0 - T-Mobile -1 - T-Mobile LG G2x

An earthquake struck the East Coast of the United States. The epicenter was in Virgina but it was felt from North Carolina to Boston.
I was on the West side of Lower Manhattan. Didn't feel a thing. Just noticed that my GPS wasn't working. However, I had excellent phone, data and email service. Those I spoke to with AT$T and no service whatsoever! This is what the "merger" will bring us T-Mobile customers. Less services in general and no service during emergencies. This situation has too many 9/11 tones to it. From people evacuating their places of business to the police and fire departments running Willy Nilly all over the place.
I for one do not want AT$T during an emergency. I know this can happen with any carrier but AT$T is so stressed with bandwidth that unless they build out the towers they have here already, the little amount of towers they pick up from T-Mobile will not help.

It was really strong down here by DC

Im in MD and I lost reception for like 20 minutes.

Did you feel it?

still no T-Mobile service here in Philly

I was having lunch in lower Manhattan with couple coworkers. Three had iPhones and one had a Thunderbolt. The 3 iPhones were dead, no signal of any sort. The Thunderbolt was extremely slow. My G2x made and received calls, texts and was able to read the news about the earthquake without a single problem.
Just thought I'd like to share.

Buddy I was in crystal city about 30 miles from the epicenter and I've been without phone service for the last 4 hours. Att had texting and Verizon had everything. Sprint came back up before T-mo.
I can only imagine what the people in Mineral VA are dealing with.

A 5.8 on he West coast is not he same 5.8 on the East coast. The deeper the earthquake occurred, the less the tremors will travel. West coast quakes usually happen pretty deep under the Earth's surface. The East coast quake was pretty shallow hence the reason it was felt over such a wide area.

Thank you for your prayers everyone! The quake ravaged my backyard in DC.

As much as I hate to admit it, but if you want service all the time, get Verizon. It was the only thing working properly on long island during 9-11. Tmobile cannot support emergency overloads let alone a convention in Las Vegas. Att I'm sure is worse. Sprint can't handle it either but probably better than att

Fast 4G LTE Speeds

I ran tests the next day inside UNI buildings and other places and still seemed to get awesome speeds.
Has anyone seen these speeds anywhere else in the country on AT&T 4G LTE?
I didn't get speeds that fast but in San Jose I was getting these numbers
ping: 60
UP: 27610
DWN: 14919
Where are you getting speeds like that at?
Jeez, where in Dallas are you getting speeds like that? The tower I'm on won't go past 30 down, that is unless I go past the Tom Thumb near me, then it jumps for like 50-60.
Uploads are ALWAYS at 13-17 though.
I have found (at least in Dallas) that when within a few hundred feat of the to were the speeds are insane

I have yet to use apps that would display what you're showing, but I have a fairly good seat of the pants feel for speeds, and yes, I notice web pages loading like a flash here in Los Angeles. I am using the skyrocket all over the West side. From LAX all the way up the beach past Venice and Santa Monica, and inland to Beverly Hills and Culver City, ever since I got this phone I've been amazed.
I'm also on the stupid 2 gig tiered data plan and I blew the lid off that and get automated text messages from AT&T's system informing me of each gig I go over how it's costing me another ten dollars.
The guy I ride around with in a truck all day has a Iphone 4 (the newest one) and his phone browses faster using my wifi hotspot, than it can on it's own. And that's part of the reason I went "over" as I like showing off.
It's an expensive trade off. His 3G unlimited plan is SLOW compared to my setup. I ditched the unlimited in favor of the tiered plan because I like how fast it is.
And no I didn't put the tether/hotspot plan on my bill, I simply flashed CyanogenMod to get it to work.
I should go to ATT store again for more rejection, and see if I can't get a better plan, (but I don't like beating my head against a wall).
Yes. Fast. And if you use it, it will cost ya. A hundred years ago, Jesse James used a gun when he robbed people. AT&T has morphed into a monster with even less integrity.

In Vegas last weekend, I got up to 44.52Mbps down. But, my connection was extremely unreliable. Sat night, couldn't get any data despite showing full bars. Only started to connect after 2am.
Out in LA (primarily the west side), I usually get around 14-15Mbps down, while once reaching a high of 27Mbps in Hollywood.

This was my last one:
I'm in Utah.
That's impressive.
Sprint just said there was an "outage" in Houston.
Yea it sucks here in Wilmington. But in the last half hr got a little better. I believe the towers are over tapped out. They let to many other low cost carriers use their equipment that bog that is for premium customers. Once again the unlimited data of low cost carriers is killing the sprint network.

Blame the iPhone, Houston's 3G was fine until that giant POS came out and ruined everything.
I consider my 3G "working well" if I hit 200k in Dayton, Ohio. Sprint had also promised 4G in Dayton by the end of December 2010....I'm still waiting.
Cincy and Columbus have excellent 4G coverage - I hit almost 11mb down while at a Bengals game a while back - then I return home to my 150-200k speeds

South of boston I get 5 up as a MAX, most of the time it is only 2-3, and 1 down MAX.
It might be a little more useful if people gave their location AND their current radio/ril/DISH combination. I'm using the official TmoUS package with the included radio/ril/and new version of Dish2.

Those numbers in Atlanta are ridiculous! I'm so jealous right now. My WiFi is oftentimes lower than my darn data connection. It's such a joke. In Ocean City, Md. this weekend I got 0.06Mbps down, 0.01Mbps up, and 2904 ping (I can provide pictures if you don't believe me). That's literally with the 4G symbol and full bars. My girlfriend's iPhone 4S was hitting 2Mbps down (and that's 3G), and a friend's Bionic managed like 10Mbps down. T-Mobile was killing me; I essentially couldn't use my data all weekend and there was no WiFi.
ok, i'm in southern California and averaging around 3MBPS down. what radio should i flash? TMOUS, ICS, ARHD.
thanks!
and thats all we ever need folks. For me anyway, lol. I don't need 18mbps or more or whatever LTE is. 5mbps is fast enough for a mobile device. even 1.5mbps... that's just me talking though. haha
oh and the highest I've ever got was 9mbps
I used to get 7-9 down, but that's dropped off to 5-6 recently with the latest T-Mobile firmware. I may go back to the international.

What good is speed when one could only use 3gb a month? I've been on the sideline thinking of switching to At&t but I'm fearful 3gb just isn't enough. I like to stream radio during the day, watch about 5 Netflix movies a week and watch one game a night of MLB baseball using the AT-bat app. Could someone tell me just how much use you get out of 3gb? Unless you must absolutely do those things on LTE; you would be fine. On LTE, you'll blow off 3 gb on just 4-5 netflix movies alone.

And, how I can get 6mb dl's in my driveway and then step in my house and have only edge downstairs with a little improvement upstairs. Definitely need to look for another carrier in February. I too had to dump tmo due to poor coverage. I am in a 42 mbps area and got awesome speeds. But several times per week I'd be somewhere getting no service whatsoever, while my wife sitting beside me was getting full bars of 3g on AT&T. I decided the awesome speeds were not worth the poor coverage.
On the bright side, if you SIM unlock the one S it works just fine on AT&T 3g.
