So I want to make sure I have the right version of CWM. I have followed the guide for rooting/installing CWM to a T and have installed the recommended version of CWM (4.0.1.4), but I read that it should be orange.
I see everything in blue (and purple at some viewing angles), so do I have the right version? I just downloaded it again from the stick and installed from HBOOT just to make sure and it did not change to orange...
Thanks!
Install the rom manager from the market and update recovery through that.

So now I have 4.0.1.5, but I thought that one had problems? While in recovery and with the phone plugged in I have no charging LED lit up.
I'm confused as the things I have read so far seem to contradict one another.

That's because Mo0oSaH told you to do the wrong thing! Installing through rom manager installs the 4.0.1.5 recovery (the one with the orange writing) which is the one with charging issues. You need the version of 4.0.1.4 with the blue writing and revolutionary written across the bottom (tip: its the one you had originally and can be found in the sticky in the Dev forum HERE).

This is not true for everyone. Plenty of people, myself included, have the .5 version FROM Rom Manager and have found it to work properly!
I actually found that the other, .4 version, DOESNT work properly. It charges, but fails to light the LED AND wont boot unless I pull the battery first.
Before you switch versions, try it out! You may find that it works fine. If not, then switch. Either one or the other should work.

Recovery Charging Issue
Clockwork recovery v4.0.1.4 with the purple writing suplied by revolutionary and 4.1.0.5 from rom manager both have an issue with charging. Your phone will not charge if you turn it off.
So if you flashed it via revolutionary.exe or in post one before i before i uploaded the new updated one.
Post one is now updated with the new clockwork recovery 4.0.1.4 with the blue writing that does not have charging issues.
Just follow Step 2 above to flash the new clockwork Recovery v4.0.1.4 and this will fix your charging issues.
the new recovery is orange while the old one was purple

This is what I read on the sticky. Maybe it's a mistake by the OP. 4.0.1.4 seems to have blue/purple writing. This is the one that I had (and now have again). But at the bottom of the post it says that the new one is orange.
Mistake? Or am I missing something here?

Even though I just got thread-jacked, here is what I did.
Go to the thread for your ROM. Look for an add-on for TMOUS users that replaces the "H" with a 4G icon. It might be that your ROM does not have such an add-on, but I know that InsertCoin does because I installed it.

I just tested it.
I turned phone off with 80% and and put it on the charger. The orange LED came on and after few mins I booted it up and it was on 85%.
So it looks like everything is fine again
To download new CWM just download rom manager from the market and install the new recovery.

Haha do you get paid to advertise your thread?
You are everywhere saying that its an option. Its 128412 easier to do it with Rom Manager, and less chance of screwing things up for newbies
I am really happy that Rom Manager is finally here, and cant wait till we get the chance to download Roms from it - making life so much less complicated for everyone new on here.

So the new CWM from the market will install a fixed version of recovery? I had already changed it through the link in the sticky post, then I installed CWM and it changed the version number. I thought it had put the bad one back on so I reinstalled the version from the thread.
I am so confused.
just leave there your CWM (v4.0.1.4 with revolutionary logo in the background) from sticky post.. i can confirm it's chargning when off and i haven't experienced any problems so far
Can someone who knows for SURE please do a definitive thread on this issue?
There are so many posts and threads with old and conflicting info around, that its too confusing to realise whats going on.
CWM team didnt help this by updating their software, yet giving it the old version number. ...
CWM 4.0.1.5 (the one ROM Manager flashes) has an issue for some users, if you use the phone until the battery dies completely, it will not charge. Use the 08/03/11 4.0.1.4, it has no issues.
Hi all. I have a vanilla HTC Sensation 4G (TMO) and i want to install CM7 and ICS theme. I havent even done s-off yet but i saw the directions on the ARHD DL page. So I am a noob to this though. Any tips/suggestions or things I should know or do before I do this. I dont want to brick my phone but it seems many people have done this so I feel kinda safe. Any input would be great. Thanks!

Follow the steps in: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
It'll give you S-OFF and ClockworkMod (CWM).
You can access CWM by switching off and pulling the battery, then hold volume down and power on.
Then through CWM you the just install the CM7 (or any other ROM) zip file from the SDcard (assuming you've already copied it over).
I have not copied it over but i will do so. Thank you very much. Any other tips would be great but it sounds easy enough.

pullin the battery isnt necesairy, if you go to menu, energy, and thik off the quik boot. you dont have to pull the battery (the less you open the device the better) just shut down the device, then hold volume down and power on.
install the htc drivers (on the revolution site) before installing, connect your device so it can fully install the drivers for fastboot usb an such.
then begin the install proces.

Cool thanks bro. Im s-off about to install recovery
Well i got to tho point where i installed cm7 from sd card and when it boots i get the blue android guy and the loading circle but then it just turns off. Gonna try some things
make sure you do a data/factory reset on recovery then flash desired rom, for CM specifically you need google apps to flash too
so flash CM7, after its done flash GAPPS
then reboot
I didnt have to flash gapps. But i did another wipe and reinstall and it worked. Seems to be good so far. What does gapps do?
it basically gives you google talk and the android market, but if it already came with that then no need to worry bout it, someone probably included Gapps in the CM7 build

Not sure of the exact reason why your handset does it. But in the early days of development for the Desire HD, this would occur when a custom recovery had been flashed.
The reason behind it was, when your handset was stock, turned off & placed on charge the phone would "boot" into a very basic HTC recovery mode to display the orange or green charging LED. When you replace the stock HTC recovery it simply boots up the recovery you have got installed.

Wow, thanks for the explanation. That makes perfect sense. But I thought that issue had been fixed for the Shift? Sorry, been a few months since I had my Shift so I can't remember if it was ever fixed or we just all stopped complaining about it. Or at least I thought it had been fixed on the recent CM7 nightlies. Maybe one of these good for nothing current Shift owners could put down the crack pipe and chime in here
That has never been a problem with the shift. It's weird that it happens to you cause when I was on cwm touch that never happened. I have no idea how to help

It's a htc charging while off issue only for recovery. The htc charging while off mode was used for the older recovery versions of clockworkmod but has since been depriciated and no longer works for ICS based recoveries like clockworkmod touch. No crack pipe smokers here bud.

Yeah I like flash image gui. The main issue I have with the recovery is that it will boot into recovery but if I don't touch anything it turns itslef back off again after about 5 seconds. It's almost like charging off is somewhat working but not completely. Oh well it's not a big deal for me and I'm very content right now with clockworkmod touch. another good way to flash recovery is in fastboot with the fastboot erase recovery command before flashing it.
so the phone works fine but i cannot charge with it off as regardless or rom while it is off if i plug the charger in it boots into recovery mode. IF my battery was to completely drain i would'nt be able to charge it with out a standalone battery charger
due to this fact i'm looking for solutions to the actual problem not someone to say don't let it die. it probably never will as i would just switch it off but still i'd like to be able to turn my phone off and charge it if i wanted to
Has anyone else experienced this or heard about this and have actual useful info, i don't need to be told flash a new rom etc i'm always flashing roms. It's not an urgent issue i'd just like to know seeing as i seem to be one of the only people experiencing this
I think you have an old recovery that doesn't allow charging.
Update to latest 4EXT.

Yes, obviously it's a recovery problem. Recovery that supports charging was done starting CWM 5.0.0.6 (hack) and 5.0.0.8 or so (official). The latest CWM should support charging too. Personally, I fail to see even one smallest reason not to upgrade recovery.

i had the latest cwm touch and couldn't charge, 4ext is alot better though, the free version has nearly every rom manager premium feature i'd switch if i was you, well i did switch lol
Okay, thanks. I'm not changing ROM often so I guess I can stay with CWM. The only prob that I have is that it boot to recovery while charging (when off) but I also doesn't shut down my phone when charging, so it doesn't matter that much.

You would certainly see multiple benefits from upgrading to 4 ext recovery, especially writhe touch version....even the free version although would recommend that you buy the paid version to support the quality developer

hi all, i am a novice at all this stuff, and i am sorry for posting probably a similar thread to what others may have said but my problem is a little different. i am having a problem with my wifes att network htc inspire 4g. i rooted it last year with the ace hack kit. the problem is that it is stuck in ace hack kit clock work recovery. it will not start up at all unless it is attched to the computer, and thats when it will go to cw recovery. it will vibrate 3 times and blink a red led and the screen goes blank unless i press the volume down button but it doesnt stay lit up only when i hit the vol down button. then when i hit an option by hitting the power button the phone resets to cw recovery again. if i try to acess hboot, it vibrates 5 times and lights up yellow. i have tried wiping, formatting, and everything but reboot to cw recovery again. from the posts that i have read similar to this problem, everyone says to get another rom and flash from hboot. being that i cant get to hboot any other ideas.

If you wiped and formatted, then you've probably erased whatever ROM you did have. At this point I'd probably use the ACE Hack Kit again, using the option to return everything to stock.... then use it again to re-root the phone. Then I'd install 4ext Recovery instead of CW. Then use 4ext to flash another ROM. I'd recommend Ice Cold Sandwich, found in the DHD development forum.

I believe the phone had froyo installed when it came factory but I updated it to the att gingerbread before I rooted it. The phone worked fine till just recently. Was there another update from att recently? Any who that's where it is stuck. No error codes just the lights like I explained above. Thx

Best guess is to flash a ruu.
Try uninstalling the htc drivers (if you have them) and install them again to see if the computer recognizes the cell.
