[Q] Command error on writecid - HTC Desire S

Hello,
I've a Desire S bought from my operator and I wanted to unbrand it.
I did successfully those steps:
-> S-OFF with revolutionary
-> SU with the update su-.... package from CWM Recovery
-> Installed the official and latest HTC Desire S no-rooted rom
When I was reading XDA I've learned about fastboot oem writecid HTC__001 on the Sensation forum to be able to get the official OTA updates.
I did try the tips by doing:
adb reboot bootloader (FASTBOOT USB showned)
and then
fastboot oem writecid HTC__001
But that was unsucessful before and after applying the official rom:
> fastboot oem writecid HTC__001
... INFO[ERR] Command error !!!
So basically, the next OTA update will be from my carrier or from HTC ?
Does anyone manage to change CID ?

Hi,
have you found a solution.
I also want to change the CID to get the official update but have also
command error...
Any solution?

You should really have looked a little harder! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278117

I did not link the problem to simlock.
I bought the Phone in Hong Kong and I can use all kind of cards (HK, German 02, German Eplus).
I always thought simlock will prevent this....
Uwe

does not work
I see a date not an unlock code...
still cannot change CID
now I'm rooted, s-off everything.
Why is this so hard?

Apology for the incorrect link
The only method I know that works is to use an xtc clip

I am also looking for a way to change the cid on a branded desire s. Has someone found a solution?

Anything new about SuperCID??

(Q) Change CID

Hi everyone,
I got a branded Desire S (Vodafone Portugal) and I would like to change its CID in order to turn it unbranded. I have tried the fast boot method of "fastboot oem writecid HTC__001" and it gives me back an error as "COMMAND ERROR!!!" with no real specification of what error it is.
Is there a way that i can change the CID?

Yes I noticed it i already asked the moderation if they could move the thread to the Desire S section.
I need to find this out to? I dont want to root my Desire S, I just want to changde CID so i could put unbranded software to it...?
You can just create a GoldCard and make it work, without root or S-Off.
Earlier today I created a GoldCard and upgraded my DS using the European RUU and I'm S-ON & Unrooted.

Yes I know that works I have a Goldcard. The thing here is that I would like the phone to be completely unbranded without the need os special cards so in case i want to sell it or send it to warranty it won't be noticed that i changed something there. So if there is a way to re write de CID it would be good.
Well i actually successfully installed the unbranded european ROM 1.28.401.1 using the gold card. But now i can't receive OTA updates. Is there a way to get it to work?
Why don't you run the European RUU 2.10 version (RUU_Saga_S_HTC_Europe_2.10.401.5_Radio_20.4801.30. 0822U_3822.10.08.04_M_release_219480_signed) from the following link:

Just to answer your question:
(I may need to be corrected on this one)
Based on my observation and experimentation. The CID that you are trying to change, or the CID that the RUU is checking is actually on the build.prop on your phone.
Code:
ro.aa.maincid
But there are two checks that I've observed. Even though you changed the maincid, the corresponding cwkey should be changed accordingly.
cwkey created on your phone corresponds on what is on the build.prop and I believe is also being checked by RUUs.
And maybe just to be on the safe side, RUUs do check what is on your build.prop. If they are not what your RUU wants, it will not push through. Hence, you need a GoldCard.
I myself don't exactly, by codes, know how the GoldCard bypasses the checks. All I do know, is that it works.

So what that means is the phone has to stay branded? There is no way that we can fully unbrand the phone by changing the CID?
And after we use the Goldcard what happens to the CID of the phone?

The goldcard does not alter the CID. It just tells the bootloader to ignore the CID check when running a RUU.
One way to alter the CID is to XTC clip the phone.
Well i ended up doing what you all suggested and flashed the RUU with the 2.10 european rom with the goldcard in it.
But something went wrong and my Desire S is in a strange situation. For some reason the Goldcard did not work like the first time and gave me a CID error. But it flashed the hboot 2.00.0002 but retained the 1.28 rom i had installed on it. I have used the HTCDev method to unlock the bootloader but everytime i try to flash the 1.28 RUU again (to flash the old hboot again) it gives me an "unknown error" that is actually a security error.
Is there a way to get the old hboot back?

Thanks for reply..my Desire S CID is HTC_001
What does that mean and do you know what HTC_A07 means
Thanks
It means that each device is meant to have different OTA updates.
You can easily bypass the CID check by creating a GoldCard that it will allow you to install any RUU you want to your phone.
I suggest you use a spare SD card or that you backup your entire data from your SD before doing anything.
You can follow the instructions from here (these are the ones I also followed when I flashed the Sense 3.0 RUU).
I'm attaching the GoldCard Tool v 0.0.7 since the vorbeth seems to be down ATM.
Also in the instructions at the point that you're required to visit reviskills.de website, the exact link is: http://psas.revskills.de/?q=goldcard
I hope the above helps!
does anyone have the changelog for this update?
Thanks for your reply guys, I will certainly try and let you know.
Thanks again
000Max, regarding the meaning of each CID, I found in my bookmarks this thread.
Even though it's in the HTC Sensation subforum, it seems to be the same for our devices too

S-OFF and warranty

I am sorry, because this have probably been asked many times, but I have a little more specific question. I have HTC Sensation rooted, and S-OFF. Now I want to send it to the service under warranty, because I noticed there is a dust under my screen.
I know what I have to do, but I dont know which default rom should I choose, so they definitely would not suspect anything. Does it have to be carrier specific or just some random EU rom? I am from Slovenia, my carrier is Simobil (Vodafone).
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
you need to flash one based on your cid which kinda gives you carrier, country info
use this guide as reference
Thank you, i just read this, however I still dont know how to find the right ruu for my phone. There is no Simobil Slovenia on the ruu list. Any other way to find out which rom to flash? The thing is I dont really remember whether I changed my CID at some point or not, so I might not be able to see/find the correct one.
Thanks again.
Ok here is what I found out now:
If i check for CID via fastboot i get this: 11111111 (i remember now, i set this)
But if i check it via application CIDgetter i get this: HTC_032
Q: Is this HTC_032 the true default CID or it could be just the info of currently installed rom, which is Viper 1.3.5 ?

Hi,
CIDGetter will show you your original CID.
When you check it via fastboot, you will get your ACTUAL CID.
If you are s-off,then , you should be able to run a European RUU and get back to stock.
Then, follow the guide ganesh gave you to s-on.

the cid you got via fastboot is the current one you are having
and HTC_032 is the rom cid ..so if you are having stock rom ..it represents your actual cid
Thank you both for your answers. Hmm, so one of you think that CIDgetter gives you original cid, and one thinks it gives you the CID of current rom. If ganeshp is right, then I still dont know my original CID, as currently I have Viper S 1.3.5 rom :// If malybru is right then I have to flash rom with HTC_032 CID and not just any European rom? Again it is important, because I dont want to get rejected on my warranty...

both of us (me and Malybru ) are saying the same thing
cid from fastboot ..gives you the actual/current cid you have right now
cid from cid getter ..will give you the rom cid (in case of viper it is HTC__032)
also based on your country ..i think the fitting RUU is indeed is of European Unbranded one (as malybru said )
if the phone is not linked to carrier (like contract phone ) then European unbranded is the right RUU
It has been bought through carrier contract, but they stopped locking them, but it could still be locked in case it was from old stock... I'll have to try that, so in case it is locked to the carrier, I need different rom? Im sorry for so many questions but im really lost in finding the right rom.

Yeah, but still needed to check. Have you thought about re-unlocking your bootloader? It's been modified in the past which might have something to do with your update problem. If you unlock your bootloader you'll be able to install a custom recovery and then you can install whatever ROM you like. We have the stock Telstra Sense 5 Android 4.2.2 ROM in our development section. We also have a few other Sense 5 ROMs to choose from, ranging from stock to tweaked.

The thing is that it hasnt been messed with.I got the phone from a HTC rep that i know ... he had it in his draw for over six months ...I just wanted the stock update but maybe rooting might be the easier way
It definitely has been messed with, phones that are s-off and have SuperCID don't come out of the factory like that. Somewhere along the way someone has done those alterations to the device.
There is just one problem I've realised, your phone has a SuperCID of 11111111 which has been blocked by htcdev. You're s-off though so you can actually change that as many times as you like using fastboot. If you want to unlock your phone you'll need to change it to 22222222 using the following fastboot command:
Code:
fastboot oem writecid 22222222
You can then check the new CID by using this command:
Code:
fastboot oem readcid
Once that's done you can go to htcdev and go through with the unlock bootloader process.
In order to do the above process you will need to install adb/fastboot and HTC drivers.

No problem ... thanks for that ....I have rooted my one x before HTC_023 fairly basic but my mate swears that the phone came straight from HTC as a Tell us what you think before we send you more kind of thing .. Cheers for the info ...
Actually one more thing ... is it possible to do a RUU update with this to 4.2.2?
There is no RUU for 4.2.2, the only way is to run an earlier RUU and take OTA updates to get there. Since you can't get the OTA I guess that isn't an option though.

Within 30 minutes drive from me no doubt
Supercid and s-off from factory or not still means you are off the official path.
Things I might do:
fastboot oem writecid TELST001
Then try the OTA again
or
RUU back to 1.89.841.9 as a RUU exists for that, then ota forwards to 5.06.841.1
or
Unlock bootloader
Flash Turges 5.08 firmware zip and then take one of the Sense 5 ROMs. There is a stock Telstra ROM even.
PS nag the HTC rep for a more recent RUU, eg 2.40.841.4, 3.17.841.2, 3.17.841.9 or 5.06.841.1 and share with us

I have often wondered the same thing, but I've been assuming that in order to flash TWRP recovery you need an unlocked bootloader.
