Hey people, this is my first post ever, but I've lurked for awhile so hello!
Anyway, I had the sensation a few weeks ago for 12 days then decided to return it because I wasn't too high on sense and coming from my rooted and rom'd vibrant it just didn't seem like a drastic improvement like I was expecting.
Now since htc has promised us an unlocked bootloader and the devs are so close to cracking it anyway...I have a small dilemma lol...
I was holding out for the hercules which is ironically coming out around the same time the sensation should at least be opened up finally, so here us my question...what would you guys recommend? Wait for the hercules which most signs are pointing to it being a better performer stock for stock, or get another sensation and patiently await root (again)?
I like the hercules for what it is and could be, but the one thing I REALLY appreciated about the htc despite all its shortcomings was the qhd screen. I despised the speaker and call volume, and its general performance as an actual phone...but I will be keeping my vibrant for that regardless.
With all that said, what you guys think?

Why do people reply with useless off-topic post?
Anyway, there's quite a few bugs right now with the Sensation, I for one am definitely selling mine. The price tag is too high for such features.

Yep this thread may be redundant and maybe he failed to search but your comment isn't so brilliant either. It's his first post, he likes XDA enough to use the premium app and his reward for making his first post was to read your comment. Look above your post for the professional way to handle something like this. No offence...

LOL @ "professional way" XDA has become so cluttered with pages and pages of useless threads because some guy bored decides to start a "should I buy phone X vs phone Z" thread or "what wallpaper should I use?" thread...Meanwhile the important threads are lost in the clutter on page 8... simply locking the threads still take up space... so BOOOOOOOOOO

Well...I don't consider my thread an "important" one by any means, just a simple innocent question. Either way, I've always felt that with internet forums...why do half of you even waste the time replying to a post if you're not really saying anything that will contribute? Does it make you feel cool to call me a newb and call my thread pointless? If so, great for you...but your reply is a waste of time and effort as far as I'm concerned.
Anywho, excuse me for not searching XDA blah blah...just trying to gleam perspective from the few people I'd hoped would at least give me their perspective...

Wait and compare.
That hercules is a myth highly doubt it comes out believe the hype if you want . Buy a phone for what type of user you are Plus in two months from whenever you buy a phone a better one will come out ,its impossible to keep up . I wish they slow down so developers of app and games can keep up to many non compatible apps for new phone . The one thing apple do good is have one os so every app and games are compatible. Android got like six versions that aren't interchange with certain apps ugh.

I'm confused on where you read or got the notion that the Hercules would be a better performer stock for stock? It's not even out, not one has touched it. It could be a friggin Vibrant all over again (yes, owned it, GAVE it away, POS, don't care what you think). Vibrant sucked, EVERYTHING I've touched that is samsung sucked. I've never used a samsung phone that I liked but that is my own opinion.
That said, get the sensation, unless you like touch**** UI and if you do, once we have S-Off, I'm sure some idiot will port that POS UI to our phone so you can have it that way.
Sense 3.0 is a resource hog, that is why it can SOMETIMES feel laggy. Once we have S-Off we can start flashing some of these streamlined ROM's and I'm sure it'll fly. Maybe even get a Sense 2.1 port which will be even faster. And one day, CM7.
You wanted some opinions, there ya go.

Sweet...an unbiased opinion at last...
Well, personally I'm not a bandwagoner when it comes to smartphones (because they ARE just phones moonlighting as computers nowadays), but I would think that the less complicated UI, extra 200+mb of RAM, 16gb of Rom as opposed to 1gb of the sensation, a slightly larger screen(with lower res obviously), and the capabilities of an unlocked bootloader out of the box would indicate that the Hercules PROBABLY is better stock for stock then the sensation IN SEVERAL ASPECTS...just saying.
Whether or not it IS better is subjective obviously I know, but they will both be very versatile when unlocked, it just seems as if the Hercules might be a tad better statistically, and I'm pretty sure it's a better PHONE based on my experience with my sensation...as the speaker, call quality and call volumes, and ability to hold a call just were not great at all and frankly any other phone probably can't be much worse then mine was. Whether it was my particular phone or not, dunno, but it kinda sucked and I was pretty disappointed. It seems as if these are not isolated problems either as I see negative stuff being posted about the sensation all day long on here...but I still liked it as a multimedia phone/web surfer/great camera/etc.
As far as samSUCK as you say, my vibrants been fantastic for me. It wasn't all that nice stock with all the issues we all know they had, but it was GREAT once I started running roms and very few phones when it first came out could top it storage wise with 16gb of stock memory plus 2gb of rom in addition to an SD slot. The Hercules just seems like a better bang for the buck overall but I still appreciate the sensation for what it is and what it'll hopefully be capable of. I would love to own both, and probably will...

Your still guessing at statistics. Nothing has been released. It very well is possible it will just be the Infuse but you know T-Mobile, they like to change stuff up so this is all hearsay. You do know that the Infuse does NOT have the SGSII's processor, right? As for 16Gb of built in storage, yeah, it's nice BUT, when you go over that, and I do, it's actually more of a pain (in my experience) to add an SDcard and figure out how to tell the phone what goes where.

Since nobody wants to give you a straight up response, having been using a Fascinate from the beginning, based on that cycle, it is probably a year out if I had to guess. That's if people are actively working on it I suppose. We just now got it working well on the Fascinate...look at the Fascinate launch date, make a few assumptions, and do the math. Unless something huge happens I would expect it to be a long time, if ever. The one saving grace for this phone is probably its similarities to many other phones like the GalaxyS line and NexusS. Nobody knows when.
Likes the poster above me said, there's no definitive information. I'd say that's the worst thing about the Charge. Not the low RAM or the lack of official GB it's just not a huge scene. Look @ the Galaxy S2, not even released in the U.S. and it's already got Cyanogen. Kind of sad to see such a beautiful phone not getting the attention it deserves.
I'm not expecting much in the way of Charge development. I kind of knew when i got it as a replacement for the fascinate that it was a holdover till March (my 20 month upgrade eligibility). At least i got a better camera, front camera and LTE for real nice chatting video.

Galaxy S2 got Cyanogen first because Samsung sent a phone to one of the devs a few months back.
I love my Charge! Came from the Fascinate and had plenty of time to try out CM7. The GPS on the charge is lightning fast right out of the box, touchwiz camera and video player are by far the best available. CM7 definitely offers more control, but the TW camera alone is enough to make me stay.

While true, that should make everyone feel even worse about the dev scene for our phone (that the manufacturer cares enough to get dev for one of their phones but not the one we have).
That said, I've never had a phone with CM. I'm completely happy with the stuff put out by Danalo, Nitro, and I'm sure I'll like kejar's stuff whenever I try it out.

I can tell you when CM7 for the Fascinate got stable and MMS finally got fixed, o tried it out, and compared to all the other Touchwiz based roms, its ridiculously fast. The BML/MTD implementation is above and beyond any TW deodexed, debloated, voodoo ext4 type of rom. That's not to discredit those roms, but a stable CM build with a good kernel literally turned my Fascinate into a whole new device more than a year into its life.
So its going to be released pretty soon.. what are the odds of the Captivate getting some love?
http://techcrunch.com/2011/10/19/in...axy-nexus-and-ice-cream-sandwich-android-4-0/
Unfortunately, I'm going to have to go with 'Nil.'
The chances are non existent. It just makes business sense for for these updates to take forever. I do understand there are some hardware issues with the updates but in the end the average consumer is going to purchase a new phone or use their upgrade in order to get the latest os. If they keep updating old phones to the newest stuff people would hold onto their phone longer. I mean, ths is the first phone ive ever owned that I could flash custom roms onto. Before this I was locked into the operating system and whatever user interface was on the phone when I purchased it. If I hadnt found this forum or custom roms I would be frustrated by the lack of gingerbread and probably would have used my upgrade by now.
No hope. Most of the features aside from the UI wont work anyways due to not having the hardware (NFC) or lack of CPU and RAM (Camera features).
Just get a nice theme
they have it up and running on fascinates, as of 5AM this morning
We didnt even get official GB and we want ICS.....lol so greedy we people are...
Hell yeah Well rogers got the official gb , but att, com'on, forget about it.
First, do a little more searching. There is alreadya thread open for this topic.
That said, we will never see an official update. Our only hope of seeing it is from a port, courtesy of a device that does get it, or wait on CyagenMod to start on CM9.
Be patient. It'll be ported eventually.
I find it amazing that somone already has it somewhat running on their fascinate. I guess all the great Cappy dev's have jumped ship
Well, i'd be surprised to see ICS for our captivate. Even if cyanogen mod is getting ICS, i probably won't jump because of the superior call quality and slightly (if not better) battery life on captivate ROMs.
I thought there was some sort of court ruling forcing google to push the same version of android to all phones that were capable. I could be talking out of my ass though.

Um I did? - and even the XDA board didn't give me the topic yet so meh.
And someone has this starting to run on the Fascinate?? The Captivate is THE phone that seems to get the most love besides the Vibrant for this range of devices.
And I don't care how we get it... as long as someone is able to wedge it into the phone.
You know, it's open source.
Any of you asking for it can take a crack at it

Nope, not even in the ballpark. Google has no legal obligation to any phone. What you are thinking of is how Google made the main phone produces agree to try harder to keep the phones up to date (up to one and a half years past release aka 18months). But that did not extend to the carriers...
Else they have to stop using the "Android" name and Google's apps

If you actually go poke around the Fascinate forum there's one guy who claims he has it running but hasn't offered any sort of proof. I think he's just looking for attention, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

Well, it is a 3G phone, so there shouldn't be issues getting the radios working. I do find it amusing the type of the support these cheesy phones get though.
I don't want to get off topic, but I am curious what sort of CIQ and other potential spyware has been implemented in ICS. It seems a good opportunity for Google to embed CIQ deep within the framework, but alas, who knows.
The main two features of ICS that I think I would like, but don't need, is USB OTG and WiFi Direct.

You already know. Yes, we are eager for ICS/CM7.1/CM7.2/CM9...and everything under the sun that a working RIL would enable us. But, having said that, I think the vast majority of us place FUNCTION in front of FEATURES.
We, Android enthusists with the skills to flash but not actually dev, are like children and will never be satisfied. We need a healthy meal, but are going to whine to have candy for dinner every night. As a dev, you're more similar to our parent in this metaphor... Don't take it personally when we metaphorically say we hate you--we don't. We love you. We need your help to eat at all, so make sure it's the best meal you can provide.
Besides, if the RIL never comes, who bought this phone for Ice Cream Sandwich anyway? I bought this phone for 4G.

imnuts, please don't take my post or the title the wrong way. I am in now way at all saying anything bad about what you do for this phone. Your work is very highly regarded in my book. I was just pointing out how crazy it is with all these ICS ports coming out now. I can promise you that I am grateful for all the work you do for us.
If you want an AOSP ROM, you shouldn't buy a Samsung phone.
Twice bitten for me. Neither of my Samsung phones has had an AOSP ROM.
As a self-proclaimed nube, I am generally curious what advantages we would see on AOSP anyways.
Is there some super-spiffy amazing bad-ass feature that I don't know about?
Humble 5.0 is great for me. I will try Infinity if/when its ready.
ICS in particular has WiFi Direct and USB OTG as I mentioned above, which I assume that CM7 wouldn't enable.

AOSP tends to offer a faster experience, and better battery life. It does this by not having any carrier or OEM bloat anywhere. There is a lot of stuff added on to the stock ROM that cannot be removed. To give you an idea, a heavily debloated TW ROM for the Fascinate is usually ~160MB, give or take, where as a stock AOSP ROM is <100MB for the same Android version, GB in this case. That would mean that even the best debloated/cleaned up TouchWiz ROM is still going to have about 40% more useless junk in it than a stock AOSP ROM, and that junk slows down the system and drains the battery.

I keep hearing we won't have ics because we have a 4g phone but the bionic just got ics port... Maybe we still have hope?

Bionic got ICS support because Kejar has a Bionic probably. I'm just glad we are on the eve of GB finally and that Imnuts and Imoseyon can get to business with some code.
Over the years around computers I've learned one thing, the next OS is always easier to use, easier to program in and what not, but it is always more complex and requires more hardware, more RAM and shortly after release the end user experience isn't all that much better than it was 6 months earlier. You should see DOS 5 run on a quad core monster processor - wow!

I agree with what you're saying mostly, but your post almost sounds like you expect Imnuts and Imoseyon to develop and post their work when they have zero obligation to develop and/or share any of their work in any way. If I wasn't so hard-pressed for cash, I would donate more to the devs. I will when I am able though.
One should also remember the short life cycle of smartphones. I am already looking forward to the Galaxy S III mostly for the display- SAMOLED III.
Also, I would like to be able to watch 480p Flash content in the browser without having to overclock, hopefully 720p Flash in the browser with the GS3.
Of course I would like my Charge to blaze along at its maximum potential, but there is a thin line between spending and wasting time on dated hardware. If you want the the best experience on a device, then it would be best to buy older hardware that it well-developed, like the Fascinate. I am willing to sacrifice for the perks of the Charge, like the SAMOLED+ display and 4G.
So, i opened this therad because there no persons pushing and Developing custom AOSP Roms for the Galaxy Tab 3.
I'm opening it here because the Android Developing forum is a bit AFK.
Also, my first question is,
Why we are not using the Android x86 source, put a little bit from samsung open source and Tab 3 binaries it, and compile it?
Its so hard?
We are the xda-developers, we can do it!
Curious..

Yes, I'm asking myself the same, the Galaxy Tab 3 is such a famous device and out since July, but still there are nearly no ROMs out. Are there any ROMs planned or will this device soon be moved to the low activity section? CyanogenMod officially supported the Galaxy tab and the galaxy tab 2, but it doesn't seem like they are planning to support the galaxy tab 3?
Is there a special reason for that?, I'm just wondering?

you know why we need developers who want to put some time in this device and at the moment we don't have much dev's around here so wait...

The most device development I've done to date has been a simple android app, but I'm willing to get dirty on this one. I just came into possession of one of these devices over xmas, and I never let a good device go to waste. I do have 17 years of programming experience in multiple languages including C++ and Java, and a lot of web-based languages, so I'm hoping to come up to speed relatively quickly.
I'll poke around here and on the net over the next few days and see if I can teach myself, but if someone could point me in the direction of some quick start tutorials for building custom roms, I'll get started.

Anthony, I think one thing that is holding people back on this device is a good recovery. The ones available now are painfully slow. I'm guessing there is some power saving mode on the x86 chip that needs to be tweaked to get it performing well. Once that was fixed, it would be a lot easier to experiment with ROMs. -- Bud

Anthony and all, hi and hello. Thinking of shaking the rust off, as I also just came into possession of a GTab3, 10.1 inch, over this holiday season. I haven't built anything in a long time, but anyone who ran a Vibrant a couple years ago around here, should recognize my handle. I maintained a rom for the Vibrant for quite a while, from Froyo to ICS, then life got busy.
Popping into here today, I'm kinda sad to see there's not much if any in the way of development on this device. Happy to have root, thats a start. cduced was right, we do need a better recovery option, at least one that is faster, though what we have now is workable. TWRP may be slow, but it's something. We were always hung up on doing pure aosp source build for the Vibrant, because Sammy is not known for making their kernel source easily and readily available. Working from an existing zip to kang it is easy, but really thats just the same rom, maybe stripped and repackaged. A source build is the desirable outcome.
Though I haven't begun looking into things for this baby yet, and my adb and build tools are far out of date, I am very interested in working towards a better set of options for this device. 4.2.2 still? I can't believe Sammy hasn't released a 4.3 update, that's sad, but goes to show the lack of support they give their devices, to anyone who's been there you know, but you also know, determined devs can make it a better world.
Anthony, and anyone else interested in trying to improve this device, feel free to PM me, I'm thinkin' we should make a Google Hangout or something, make it easier to communicate.

Hey I want aosp on this device too! At the very least, id like a custom kernel that I can overclock to reduce lag. Ive never created a rom, but I dont think roms are the issue...id be interested in porting roms that already exists...x-note for multiwindow features, or pac-rom for a highly customized device.
Are you still up for the projects? Lets heat these forums up!!!

It's ok I have already seen and tried them . I understand the concept of work on something new and the lack of dev it's just that I was surprised because I thought tab 3 was like the others tabs so the development was more evolve.no problem.
Not to knock it, but whats been released in the threads, is nothing more than the deodexed build already up there, with some bloat removed. Even the install scripts have, or had, the same text as the original. So really, nothing new. I am looking into possibly kernel cooking for this device, that seems like a good point to start.
No promises at this point, I'm looking into it though.

This is true but there is finally a bit of interest and may come up with some new goodies..... the reason they all have the same updater.script is because of the recoveries.... they need a little more work to get them to work with the x86 architecture
