Replacing Broken SLCD - HTC Desire S

I'm looking at replacing the screen for a Desire S, and I was wondering if anyone had good references for sites to buy spares and/or tutorials I can follow.

There is a link to a good guide on youtube in my thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16832887

Desire S also comes with SLCD? i thought it was AMOLED only?

No only the original desire used amoled in it's early models but then they switched to slcd. The desire s has always used slcd

I am very keen to find out how you get on. I too need a new slcd screen due to water damage. The digitizer is fine so just want to know where the best place to pick up a genuine screen replacement.

EBay is your source! Dont forget to tick worldwide at your search. Otherwise you wont see the cheap-ass china stuff

So those who have had Multiple Sensations

Have you notice any difference with the screens. similar to the mt4g issue?
Im coming up on the end my remorse period thinking about doing a exchange because of the unresponsive lockscreen issuei had yesterday. Just want to make sure there isnt a bad screen version out there.

All I can say is ask for one thats made in China. But Most HTC phones are made in Taiwan and the screens they use there are made from the brand Sharp. And the ones made in China are made from Sony. I might exchange it too. My mytouch 4G that was made in China had better viewing angles, deeper blacks, and the colors being more vibrant. And everything opposite from the one I exchanged that was made in Taiwan. If you do exchange it, take pictures first. Then compare it to the new one. Make sure u ask if they have some made in China. I feeling they do. Post your reseults after comparing them.

mine is made in Taiwan and the screen looks great.
good viewing angles.
no problems.
made in Taiwan vs. China was MT4G issue, not sure if it follows on the Sensation.
I am on my third one and there is an obvious difference.in screens and overall performance. This last one has much better viewing angles and more vibrant picture. I had the Mt4g for a short time and it took five of those to get a decent screen. This device screen reminds me of the fiasco that took place with the Mt4g Seems HTC just cannot get the displays consistent. Mine is from Taiwan made on 6/3/11. So far except for a couple of minor glitches this one(the third) seems good. I really do like this phone, I hope it continues to function flawlessly so that it is a keeper. I probably would not go for a fourth go around.
Seems like most of the devices that has a shipping date starting in June is better.. mines has the shipping date of 5/24 and I have the crazy WiFi issue.. now I know what date to look for. Thanks guys.

Good to know regarding ship dates to look for

Mine was shipped 5/30 from China and I have no problems with it. Great WiFi signal and a beautiful display that is extremely bright in direct sunlight. It's actually there best display I have ever used in direct sunlight. I thought the Super AMOLED was supposed to perform better in sunlight but my Vibrant didn't look any where near as good. The G2X I compared her to couldn't hold a candle in direct sunlight.

So if yours was made in China, it confirms what the other person has said: that the Chinese made screens are better, because it could be a different supplier, maybe Sony. I just hope that if I go back to Walmart to exchange mines, they have some from China.
Just exchanged my Sensation because as I said in another thread. The battery was not charging. When I traded it in they gave me a Taiwan version and I do not notice a difference in the display besides having a dead pixel so I exchanged that one as well. The one I exchanged that one for was lag heaven so I exchanged that one. I just got my 3rd one today and they were all made in Taiwan.
I can tell you guys this. While the screen might not be different besides defects. The sped of the device differs. I have had 4 of them and all 4 have ran different. This 4th one is the fastest one I have gotten so it's a keeper.
Anyone else find this strange?

Save it for HTC support. If they say it's defective, have it replaced through them.
I called my local t-mobile store because my device has legitimate problems (like wrecking SD cards, the touchscreen only working when it feels like, and a general inability to associate to any WiFi network) and they said they're out of stock because a lot of people have exchange theirs and they have to send them back to the manufacturer.
How do you know if it's made in taiwan or china/
How do you check where and when your screen was made?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
if u look on the back of ur box on the white sticker it tells u where the phone was made
The box my phone came in says Made in Taiwan. Does that mean my whole phone, screen included, was made there? My screen is gorgeous, no complaints here. I had the bad mt4g screen and the viewing angles blew. For people who say their screen is made in China, how do you know? Does your box say China? Or Taiwan like mine?

Desire S or something else??

I'm going to buy a new HTC phone...I've been thinking of Desire S although it doesn't have sense 3.0 but available with custom roms. Is this a good choice. I thought about Sensation but its outta my budget. Any suggestions( must have a large screen and resolution with good sound quality). Pls suggest a good one.

I've seen deals online in the UK offering sensation on T-mobile at same price that you'll get the desire s for which was £25pm for 24m with no cost for phone.
so look around more, if you want big screen then Sensation might be for you , as desire s is mid sized screen which is why i own one.
I suggest that you go to a shop and decide which one of the two feels right in your hand/pocket.
I cannot stress enough, do not get a sensation. There is an epic problem with dust getting in under the screen. I do not usually take too much notice of things said on forum's as they are usually only a few people moaning about isolated cases, but this is different. I had one from three in the uk, it had dust, sent it back and the second one was worse. Also, sense 3.0 is laggy and unsmooth compared to 2.1, and in general it does not feel any quicker than the desire s. When i sent the second one back i got a desire s instead and it feels a much better product than the sensation. Smoother, better battery life and a nicer size too. Only thing i miss is the screen resolution of the sensation, but it's not that big an issue really 800x480 is hardly cramped!

No! There is an even better deal than that! I got mine from talkmobile for
£15 handset, £25 a month for a 1 year contract!!
I get 300mins, 1000 texts, 1gb data! It is a special tariff and will be expired soon.
I also get £46 quidco cashback and NHS 40% discount.
So for the handset and data plan, im paying just over £200!!!
What a deal!
Great phone, proud owner for about a month now and it functions great.
You do mention a big screen. The desire s is only 3.7" while most phones are 4-4.3". You might want to compare different sizes in a store.

They are big. I personally think its much higher quality than the Sensation.. (Just because its aluminum doesnt make it a better build quality) infact i think that about Samsung compared to HTC anyways.. Sammy makes strong light devices.
Even with a lower resolution the Amoled + screens are far superior to the LCD screen HTC uses and the Note has an HD version of the AMOLED + Makes me really want one.

Lower resolution ????? The galaxy note has a 800 x 1280 pixels screen and it's not super amoled +. It is super amoled ( without the + ). Anyway this is not the place for such a thread! XDA has changed a lot in the last year! I miss the old days!

I dont have hard time carrying the sensation in the pocket, its light and thin (reasonably) i couldnt be more satisfied with the phone, but tht 5.3" screen, the specs, stylus and a HD super amoled screen sound sooooooo damn appealing... It really makes me wanna sell the sensation.. am i alone in this dilemma guys?

Or in this case, get a tablet. Id rather spend the $600.00 on a tablet rather than a new phone thats only edge on my current one is a larger screen. That is exactly what I did when I saw the GN. I got an Ipad. Ive got my Sensation on my hip and my Ipad in my lap. Now I have it all...iOs and Android.

Yeah, it's very good. It just simply, works. No waiting for this or that to come out for it or waiting for some dev to fix something that apple should have fixed long before releasing only to have that one dev go buy a completely different device and forget about you.
Android has better hardware but piss poor work ethic from the manufacturers.
Apple has much nicer looking products with lesser hardware, but they make damn sure that your never notice the lesser hardware. This iPad 2 is fast! I am typing this on the on screen keyboard. Something that was a pain in the butt on my dads toshiba thrive.
Android needs to finish what they start. I got tired of waiting for others to make my android devices what they were advertised to be. I got tired of having to devote most of my time learning how to do something on a forum that was supposed to work straight out of the box.
I love my sensation, but not all the drama that I have gone through to get it to where it is today. A lot of buttkissing devs and being *****ed at for eta asking has pushed me closer to apple. If it weren't for tmobile having me by the balls, I'd have an iPhone. People will say to go get what you want, but that is so dillusional. We wind up stuck with what we have and then have to deal with the issues. I was disgusted to see the sensations early problems needing fixing and then watch Htc come out with four clones of the sensation each new month rather than fix and finish what they started. Finish what you start!
Matt
Samoled is amazing, better than Sensation screen but also takes up that much more power. Sensation screen is also great not take away from that. 5.3" is a bit much dont you think? I had the vibrant it felt bigger than our Sensation with its 4.0" . Also I didn't really appreciate the plastic but it was/is really sturdy. I don't anyone had their phone break. I also have to say if the Note's glass is anything like the Vibrant's then you will be happy. That screen is almost impossible to scratch. You could literally take a key to it without a screen protector. Wish our sensation glass was like that. And lastly, touchwiz isn't bad at all. Give it a chance, with all the modded twiz launchers and alternatives its a fun device. Also theirs a sense look alike launcher I used for a couple days on my vibrant. So all in all it comes down to preference. But I have to say one thing, Samsung sucks at updating android versions. We got froyo 2 months after gb came out. And its not about to change either.

Agreed.
One thing I do notice however .... the phone seems to be the benchmark the other manufacturers shoot for or want to beat.
Then there's the guys who like to say they have a better option then the Sensation.
It would seem this phone set a new standard.
This is a phone... That is a phone... They do pretty much the same thing. Why make so much of an effort for a bigger better screen with a juvenile u.i. Atleast wait for something like a quad core and impressive games/apps exclusive for the quad. I swear i dont see anything that the sensation does which the desire hd couldnt. IMHO, these frequent minor updates dont make much sense and also ruin the fun after updating to a much more capable phone which is just better at everything.

Hi, a phone is a phone is a phone ? Except when it gets silly looking a becomes a "phablet !"
I run a Samsung Galaxy GT-S5570 (mini) yes its small, but it does what I bought it for...
However if you are a power user I would choose a Droid Razor MAX its got a 31 or 3300Mh/amp battery, plenty juice to run your apps or WiFi all day-then some.
Then again if you just want a smart Droid that can do it all, I can't see past Samsung's range.
Check which flavour your new phone will run and if its going to get a newer version.
Hope this helps, good luck happy hunting
P.S. Don't be afraid to ask a salesman to boot up a fresh one,if you see one you fancy and the display version is dead or a dummy.

I'd say the odds of the screen breaking would be far greater than those of the Adreno failing. In fact, I've never heard of anyones mobile's gpu being broken, whereas I've come across countless of cases of broken screens etc.
As far as I know there is no difference between the screens, but if you get an XE screen, you'll end up with red buttons. Furthermore, the screens are apparently manufactered by two different companies, being Acer and Sharp. This won't affect the compatibility, however. Source
ohh thanks now i can sleep again best forum ever
