help me decide for an android smarphone - General Questions and Answers

well ive been looking for an android smartphone i was using the lg optimus one the p505 phoenix it was really good but now i want something bigger
i was seeing the nexus one but i ve told that it has hardware problems that is not good so what others model can you suggest me to buy of course the one goes cheaper i meant 100-110 us on ebay

Hi, a phone is a phone is a phone ? Except when it gets silly looking a becomes a "phablet !"
I run a Samsung Galaxy GT-S5570 (mini) yes its small, but it does what I bought it for...
However if you are a power user I would choose a Droid Razor MAX its got a 31 or 3300Mh/amp battery, plenty juice to run your apps or WiFi all day-then some.
Then again if you just want a smart Droid that can do it all, I can't see past Samsung's range.
Check which flavour your new phone will run and if its going to get a newer version.
Hope this helps, good luck happy hunting
P.S. Don't be afraid to ask a salesman to boot up a fresh one,if you see one you fancy and the display version is dead or a dummy.

No to the HTC wildfire s, it will be a downgrade in terms of specs and software, only upgrade is build quality and camera.
The HTC mytouch 4g is a nice upgrade and has a decent sized screen. Its a great choice

Nexus S or Droid 2 Global OR something else?

I like d2g because of the keyboard, but locked bootloader
On the other hand, nexus s got latest android os (although things may change after 1 year, just nexus one),but worse in designing
I dont know which to choose, or u have other idea(eg. droid 3 is coming)
I'm also torn. I would love the d2g but there's barely any community behind it.
wait for dual core phones
I wouldnt use either of those. I would either get the droid x or the htc evo... I have the evo amd havent had one problem with it.

Google has the best camera
It depends what you want. Think in terms of hardware and software. The Nexus S doesn't have cutting edge hardware, but its Google's example of the best Android experience they can offer on a phone at the moment. Phones like the Atrix from CES would be an uber option if you're looking for bleeding edge hardware. For me, I'm undecided about the crazy new phones coming out vs the Nexus S, when considering what Android phone to go with. A dual core phone would be pretty kick ass, but I wouldn't want to be stuck with an older, skinned version of Android and a locked bootloader.

Out right now I would say the top five look like this:
1. Nexus S
2. G2
3. MT4G
4. Epic 4G
5. Desire
If you want updates in any sort of timely matter don't get a Samsung device unless it's the Nexus S, the rest of the phones rarely ever get updated.

I know it's not Android-native, but I think the HD2 deserves mention here
Get a big sd card, and you can have many ROMs to choose from at any time, and its very fast and stable. Not to mention that I have an Android build on my sd card with over 200 apps, and it's still faster than most native Android devices. Not to mention that it also boots Ubuntu, and Windows Mobile 6.5 or WP7 and soon Meego
If you want a very capable, customizable Android phone, check it out!!

EPIC
HD 2 or EVO. Major community support, great hardware.
Anything by Samsung does not get updates.
This thread is going exactly as expected. Let's try it this way...Instead of me saying "GET THE PHONE I USE" I'd that if you don't need a new phone immediately, and can wait a few months, check out the next gen lineup when they come out. there will be loads of comparisons between them and the current gen phones. I say you make your choice based on that.
You don't know what carrier you want to use?
What kind of features do you want?
There is no clear cut "best Android phone". The best vanilla updated phone + best GPU + best screen goes to Nexus S. But no microSD slot and can be hit or miss with GPS issues.
The fastest Android with the best processor, front facing camera goes to MyTouch 4G. But standard OS is "bloated" and the phone can have issues with permanent root sticking.
The best Android with a qwerty keyboard is either the G2 or the Droid 2 Global. But the G2 has a slower processor and less ram than the MyTouch 4G and when upside down the keyboard hangs loose. And the Droid 2 Global has eFuse with a locked Bootloader so you can't fully customize it.
The best Android that has all around "decent" hardware but no clear cut "best" anything is probably the Desire. But the processor/GPU and hardware isn't really the strongest.
You really need to tell people what you want to do with the phone and how you'll be using it.

[Q] Which phone should I buy guys?

Guys I am planning to buy a new phone. I want your suggestions about choosing the right one. I am relying on good battery life and phone which has a good amount of development going on (custom roms, kernels, miui, cyanogenmod, ics etc.) coz I love to fiddle with devices a lot. My current choices are :
Samsung galaxy R
Samsung galaxy S plus
HTC Desire S
HTC Incredible S
These are my options but senior members can suggest me phone in range of 23000 INR ($475).
Thanks in advance guys

Isn't Galaxy Nexus coming to India soon? It definitely has those things (though battery life preferred with custom kernel) and is probably of choice (until the new quadcores come out in a few months anyway) for tinkering. But I'm not sure you can get it for $475, unless they offer it more cheaply there. I got mine for $550ish, and that's considered cheap here.

Umm.. If you look for design and Sense UI, go for HTC. But if you want a performance device then I would suggest Samsung R or S Plus.
Thought for 23k you can even get Optimus 2x or Optimus 3D.
But if your just gonna stick with Samsung and HTC. I would suggest Samsung for the performance. No wonder HTC's Sense UI is far better than any other device out there but its just your decision whether wanna go with Design and Looks or Performance and Built Quality!

2 years ago, I prefer 3.7" phones to 4.3" phones. But now, 3.7" and 4.3" seem too small for me. Just try it first and you'll like it and even want a bigger one. Anyway, the 4.8" screen was rumoured to have a 16:9 aspect ratio.

I see. For that price, you might consider the HTC Sensation. I think the HTC Rezound occasionally gets that low (say with special promotions), but I can't find any at this moment.
I'm not familiar with any of the "cheaper" manufacturers (Huawei or the like) but it might be something to look into.
If your not in a hurry to get a phone. I would suggest you too wait for like till April or May. There are like 20+ phones getting launched by then.
HTC's One series are gonna be available globally by April. Even LG, Samsung, Sony has launched some new phones and they all comes with ICS 4.
So you may wait for sometime and I bet its worth waiting for.

That's actually a good point. Old phones usually take a price dip when their successor comes out. The HTC Rezound is sure to take one when the One X comes out, for instance, similarly for the Samsung Galaxy S2 when the S3 comes out.
So if you can wait, I'm going to speculate that those phones might dip down into your (OP's) price range. (But you should allow for a margin of error ).
If I were you, I would check the forum on what phone has the most development ... That way, you can have a lot of Rom choices hehehe

Which used GSM Android to buy for max $250

Hi Guys,
Which Android phone would you advice me with a budget of maximum €200 ($250)? I'm willing to buy something used.
Mainly I need good and stable WiFi Tethering (Hotspot, not peer-to-peer access point).
Second thing is the speed - I'm upgrading from a HTC Hero, which even after rooting with VillainROM isn't really the fastest...
HTC Desire? Or any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Edit: sorry wrong section, moved question to here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26891627#post26891627
For used phone i think Galaxy S i9000. i have this phone and a very very good device
Thanks for your answer.
Actually, the Galaxy S Advance still fits my budget, so I guess it would be a much better choice than the S i9000?
I'm looking for a 3.7" or 4.0" phone (I'd like it to be usable with one hand) so that leaves me with rather limited choices. I have also found the Xperia Sola, but it seems that it isn't very popular here on xda, and I have read it has browsing problems...
Other than that, the Galaxy Ace 2 seems very interesting.
What would you advice? Or are there any other phones worth considering?
Buy the HTC explorer or Samsung GT-5360 there both good phones.

I used to have a Desire Z (the one with the hardware keyboard) but it started feeling too slow because of lack of sheer CPU horsepower.
I managed to snag a used HTC Sensation 4G for about $250 and I absolutely love it. There are lots of great ICS ROMs for it (outside of any official ICS releases). With newer phones coming out, you should be able to pick up a used one within your budget.
Good luck!
HTC sensations are going for around 250 in my area.

..if you can, go for the HTC Sensation...otherwise Samasung Galaxy S
Thanks so much for the answers
I was looking at these phones, I think I might stretch my budget, but the Sensation is 4.3"... My original goal was to be able to use the phone in one hand, but maybe I'm exaggerating?
Last time I went to a store here I found that the Xperia Sola (3.7") was OK to use with one hand. The Galaxy S Advance (4.0") felt quite large already, but was also possible. There wasn't anything 4.3", but the One X (4.7") felt totally impossible.
If I were to go for the Samsung, is a Galaxy S really preferred over a dual-core 1,0GHz Galaxy S Advance??? Or is it to be expected that there won't be much development for the S Advance?
And about the Sensation - I see there is the Sensation 4G with a 1,2GHz CPU and the XE with a 1,5GHz. I assume the latter would be of preference?
Get the LG g2x
HTC sensation XE. Great phone.

The Sensation XE has a faster CPU (not THAT noticeable) but it does have Beats Audio, which the regular 4G doesn't have.
Of course, if Beats Audio is important to you and you can get a 4G for cheap, do it and just root your device and install a custom ROM onto it. There are lots of them and some of them have Beats built in.

Why?
The folks from the Atrix forum claim that CM9 is usable on daily basis, and the videos of it on youtube look really good (very smooth)
I am actually considering a SGS2 now, because they have dropped in price second hand considerably (I can get a used SGS2 for the price of a new Atrix here), but I'm still not really convinced I'll get used to the size of it...

I've had the atrix and honestly. Idk what the deal is about Motorola but the atrix just isn't smooth. Its not slow, no not at all but I mean it studders on every little action. I don't know how to explain it, its like its not optimized for the hardware.

Which phone should I get?

Well, as the title reads, which phone should I get next? My AT&T contract will be fulfilled in the next couple of months so, I've been looking at available AT&T phones. I currently have an HTC Desire Z and I love the size of it - easy to put in and take out of my jeans pocket. Most of the new phones I see are so big they should come with a back pack for them. Can anyone recommend a late model, fast phone that isn't as huge as the HTC One X and Samsung G3? And, please don't say "Iphone".

I think ~5" is the perfect size for a smartphone - big enough screen to see things and enjoy it, but small enough to still use effectively with one hand.
Honestly, I remember the first cell-phone I ever used and it was WAY bigger.
If you do want something smaller, though - I don't know, I'd probably look at international phones that would work with ATT, or just go into an ATT store or such and look around. The Galaxy S3 Mini is smaller, but I don't know how well it will work on ATT and what you could expect (it lacks LTE, I've heard). It also depends on the performance you're expecting.
have you considered one of those quality Chinese android handsets ?
things like the Newman N1, GooPhone, ZTE V970 etc ?
I think you should go with Galaxy S3. I am also using this phone last some months it's a superb mobile phone bacase it has 4.8 inch Superb Super AMOLED display with saturated colors and high contrast with 8 megapixel camera with autofocus, flash and HD video recording, 4.0 android operating system, Quad-core 1.4 GHz Processor and 2050 mAh battery capacity. You can read full details here:

Thanks for all the replies! I do plan to look around the AT&T store but sometimes its a little overwhelming when I start diving into the specs for every phone.
I was not aware of the "quality" made chinese phones; I may look into that.
Thanks again for the help and if there are anymore recommendations please, keep them coming.

Getting my kid a new phone for Christmas (she has my old Droid X). Was contemplating an IPhone, soley because of the incredible speech-to-text features (something my Bionic is woefully poor at) Sales dude at Verizon showed me what a Samsung can do in that realm....was utterly impressed....no diference from the 'Sirry' IPhone thing (apparently it hinges on a google service)
what's your budget? Desire z is mid range so if your budget is about the same then look at Galaxy S2.
Budget will be determined by AT&T having a phone I will settle with on a contract extension so, I guess my budget will be $200~300.
C
Best phone on the market at the minute (*arguably*) is the ASUS Padfone 2.. but sadly it isn't available in the US (no US release date mentioned yet either).. so would probably say the LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy S3 would be a contender..
I'm not really looking at the IPhone 5 but will the IPhone 5 sync with my google contacts and google calendar? That's one thing I really like about the android phones. From my research the iphone 5 can be made to sync with all my google stuff but how effective/accurate is it? Are there any bugs or issues with this?
