External Application Caches? - T-Mobile LG G2x

It seems as though all the applications' caches are being stored on my external SD which is a pain because its taking up alot of unwanted space when it could just as easliy be with the apps internally. Whats going on here? How to I make them store their cache internally?

[Q] storage problem/free space -- what is taking up so much??

So starting off with this phone I know it doesn't have the best internal storage. When apps are moved to the SD some of the app stays behind on the internal storage, I know that. I have had 2 shifts. My first one i dropped, cracked the screen, and the insurance gave me a new one. On my first shift at the time I had about 70mb of free space left when I sent it in. Before sending it I made a titanium backup and restored that on my shift I have today. When I restored it I had about 120mb of free space. (NOT THE PROBLEM READ ON)
So the point is something in the system is causing massive storage to fill up over time, and its not apps. I have force moved apps and that only helps a little. Is it a certin cache that I can clear? please help!
At the moment I have 60mb of free storage, that is with the app cache cleared through App2SD
Right I have the following : System ROM 219MB , Internal 222MB , SD Card 8.32 GB . When you long press on an app in TB it should give you the option to move to SD card. You shouldn't have to force move an app. When you restored all your apps did you restore apps and data? Or just the app? Also after restoring with TB you need to make sure the app was restored to the correct place. There's an option I usually check in the preferances before I restore all my apps. It restores to the previous location you had the app. Hope that helps.
I restored the apps and data... This isn't a problem with tb, its a problem with some storage/cache something building up in the system
No I'm not using Tapatalk... I'm using the XDA Premium app, cause I got balls.
My email took up a lot of storage on my old hero because everytime I deleted something it still stayed on a new folder called imap/trash... it was taking up about 50mb so you might want to look into that

In your sd card or internal? There was a folder on my sd called .trashes and it had everything I had deleted on my sd. Where exactly is it located? Ill look in root explorer.

Don't know if your restoring SMS with something. But if your are sometimes that takes up hella space. Did a phone that had over 25MB of SMS messages restore back onto it on internal mem.
i will see, i also use a tool called disk usage. you have probubly heard of it but it maps out everything and the amount of space it takes up. you can narrow the results to a certin cache or whatever. ive seen that apps like pandora are taking up space in the dalvik cache. Its only like a mb or 2 but still. do you know anything about apps storing things in the dalvik?
what is the dalvik even for anyway?
I've been trying to go back to stock today, so I've wiped a few times, but I've got 430MB total space internal, with 366MB free
and.....
i dont understand what this has to do with this thread

I beleive dalvik cache gets recreated everytime you reboot. But, about Pandora is it on the SD Card? Or internal mem? I listen to a TON of music. When I had Pandora on internal it was up to 12MB .So I moved it to the SD card, only 536KB on internal now.
My app is on the SD but it is storing over 1mb on internal
If you have DiskUsage go to the [root required] section and press 'App Storage'
if you can find pandora you will see that most of it is stored in the dalvik cache
Sorry I don't use DiskUsage app. Your right about how much is on internal. Mine reads 1.28MB.
any idea what it is storing there?
Drawing a blank on this, I'll keep looking. See if I can come up with something. But I'd probably head on over to theMikMik and see if somebody there can help.
My biggest space hog when I had problems was email... Try clearing data for email or gmail to see what happens (maybe back up first)

I have both, a aim on the mail app and my gmail on the gmail app

i cleared my cache partition, not sure what was stored there but it doesnt matter cleared up 20mb... is there any other ways i can get more space??? why are apps storing data in the dalvik??
Any other suggestions here? My wife's Shift is having this problem. Constant notification about low storage space. Can't even download any new apps. I have not rooted her phone yet, and not sure if I will; I don't want to have her have to go without for any length of time, and I don't think she wants things changed around so much as she just wants the thing to work, not to have to tinker or troubleshoot.

Did you download a lot of apps? Try moving the apps to the SD Card. The path is Menu-Settings-Applications-Manage applications-Downloaded. Then just click on the applications one at a time. If the button says Move to SD card, and isn't greyed out press it. That should free up some space. If that doesn't work since your not rooted, I would just try a factory reset.
clear the folder /data/tombstones. App crashes and such create rather large files that can eat up quite a bit of space. Also check the cache folder at the root, failed market installs will have file fragments in there as well.

Internal Memory almost full

Nexus S has 1gb of internal memory for apps and other data required. You can also move apps to sd.
My problem is this one: I have only 177mb of internal memory left, and everytime i want to install something from Google Play says it`s not enough memory. I kept the most important apps for me ( ~80-100 apps), most of them moved to sdcard.
What can i do to free up some memory (except deleting other apps) ?
I heard something about creating another partition from sdcard(external-13gb) that phone will consider it`s also internal, but i did not find anything yet on this area.
Do you know anything about this ? Thanks.

How to stop Android from caching thumbnails?

Yesterday I finally got around to shifting my entire music collection to my external SD card, and then I uploaded all my music to Google Drive as well for safe keeping. Woke up the next day missing over 1.5GB of internal storage space. I checked Android assistant and my thumbnail cache was 1.88GB. It's usually pretty high anyway since I have dozens of podcasts, videos, and even some full movies on my external SD card, but now it's ballooned out of control. How can I stop Android from forcing these thumbnails that I don't want associated with my files?
Galaxy S4 stock 4.2.2 and rooted if that makes any difference.
I don't think there's a certain way to prevent this unless someone has a tool for. You'll just have to clear / delete the files as you go along.

The problem is that even after I delete the bloated thumbnail cache, at least according to my settings menu, the internal storage remains the same. So it seems that the space is reserved for the inevitable refreshing of the thumbnail cache that comes every time I reboot or my music gallery is opened. It just annoys me that so much valuable internal space is taken up by something so pointless. If I could find a way to have thumbnails save automatically to my external SD card, I would be happy enough with that.
Hello, I'm not sure how to stop thumbnail caching but try and clear cache its self
Sent from my GT-S5830 using Tapatalk 2
Unfortunately clearing the thumbnail cache does nothing. The internal storage remains the same and the thumbnails are back on reboot all the same.

Apps are not being installed on sdcard but on internal storage

So here I am again with another problem... That I couldn't find any solution for it.
My moto g has 8gb ROM and a sdcard of 128gb formated as internal storage.
Great, almost all apps are installed on internal memory and so is the cached data, for example downloaded musics from Spotify or Google play music, well I hadn't noticed it until today I couldn't update any app because I have no space left....
I found no settings on either the apps or on the storage menu that allows me to select the SD card as preferred storage... The migrate data option on the settings menu wants to move 17gb from the SD to the internal storage (lol).
So anyone with an idea from what went wrong?
Thanks.
I have the same problem. The storage is completely full now, but there's still enough space left on the SD card! The phone is now complaining about limit storage, but there should be more than enough left!
No apps are installing to SD? A lot of your apps aren't going to install to SD plus all the system apps will install to internal.
To move all data and cache to sd...you need to use Link2SD with root access.
Or you could have a look at this, works pretty well for me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/2015-moto-g/general/adoptable-external-storage-time-t3340551

There is a method to install/move apps to SD?

I've been looking for a method to move or force installation of apps to my 128gb micro SD card and so far I haven't found anything that works correctly, is there some method that actually allows moving apps to the SD card? or any custom rom that allows this? would titanium backup "move to SD card" option work?
You can use adoptable storage. It binds an SD card to your phone so you won't be able to use it with any other devices, but it essentially extends your phone's storage space by that much. Make sure you back up everything on your external SD card somewhere if there's anything important on it because this will wipe it clean.
1.) Open the "Files" app (the Google app with the colorful folded rectangles).
2.) Go to Browse.
3.) Scroll down to the bottom where you see your SD card, and tap on it.
4.) Hit the three dots in the top right.
5.) Click "Storage Settings".
6.) And finally, "Format as internal".
Once you've "adopted" the storage space you can move apps to it freely by going to a specific app's "App Info" page, clicking Storage, and choosing "Change" for each app. If you want to move multiple apps you can use something like "Internal Storage To SD Card" from the Play Store, which helps streamline the process; or even go into Developer Options and enable the option "Force allow apps to write on external storage" near the bottom which will force the majority of apps to favor the external SD card over the phone's.
Here's a bit more info on where your files are kept after this process.
If you want to retain separate access to the external SD Card so that you can use it with your computer or other devices while also storing app data on there, I'm afraid it's not very simple to do so. Android 9/10 has made a lot of changes with file access and how things are managed and stored on your device. I'm still figuring it out for myself, too.
i have a question, it will lose performance?
because i think if the phone is using a UFS 2.0, is the same or better maximum speed of R/W of SDCARD?

Of course, the performance of the external drive will be lower.
However, don't underestimate them.
The performance of modern transflash is quite enough, for example, to run games like Doom, witcher or Skyrim(20+GB distros) from them on Nintendo consoles. The main thing is that the card is good. Like the same Sandisk extreme.
Not working for me. I've formatted the SD card as internal, but I can't move any apps to the SD card. When I go to the storage screen for an app, it only displays the total, app size, data and cache. There's no option to change storage location.
Yes, I've rebooted.
Same for me.
App mgr III and link2sd did not works even with Root :/
WTF nobody found a solution on a Android 10?
You don't want the apps running off the SD card as it's bandwidth is a lot slower than internal memory! It's a bottleneck to avoid.
Use the SD card as a data drive only.
Internal memory: OS, apps, temporary data and downloads.
SD card: all critical data, backups, music, vids, etc. Everything you need to fully restore the phone after a factory reset should be on it including copies of the apks.
Always redundantly backup the data drive on at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically separated! Or you will lose your data sooner... or latter.

Yes i know ... All my pictures, videos etc are on SD ...
But you don't reply, do you have a solution?
Like millions of android users, i have not enough space for games in the phone. I don't care about slow speed of game. Genshin inpact for example take more of 7gB !
OS takes 15gB ... App takes often many hundred of mB it's WTF...
App are crazy to cache, and snapchat instagram facebook etc can take 1gB each.
The sd limitation is a programmed obsolescence for smartphones (256 gB of microsd are cheap). All people don't care about low performance of specifics app, it's better than the impossiblity to install then.
Normally we should be able to make symbolic links between linux partititons.
That's the same on windows, i install my terabytes of games on an hard drive because my sdd is not enought ... And it works well.

Be happy for the bump...
You should also post your OS version for solutions.
Maybe a ADB edit could get it.
Lol, I have one game loaded. Most are fair to high privacy/security risks... that could really keep you amused.
I used App2sd earlier with android 7 and devices with 8GB flash , where only 3.5GB we ahve for applications. The result, I was able to install 100 or more apps and games without problem. It will not work in modern android.
I use a script which move all pictures , movies, call recordings to the sd card when I plug in usb-c cable. The card is a place of storing multimedia, nandroid backup and titantium backup.
Modern devices with 64GB+ flash are able to keep all apps inside , of course if all media files will be moved to sd card.

I guess xda developers not the same. It is ****. They can't brake a **** Xiaomi? It seems that I have to buy an old phone not Xiaomi and brake it.
Hi, I know I'm late to this but hopefully it will help someone having the same problem.
Tested on Redmi 9a, android 10
1- After you format your sd card as
SeekerofLight.iz said, download this app from Google store: this app basically shows all the hidden settings on all Xiaomi phones.
2- Open the app and type storage in the search bar located at the top.
3- you will see several results, tap at
"Storage Use: Storage use
com.android.settings.applications.StorageUse".
4- A new window will open with a list of all apps installed on your phone. Tap the app you want to move to sd card then "storage and cashe" and you will find the da** "Change" button we all have been looking for tap it and select sd card.
I've attached screenshots for those who prefer them.
And about performance, there was a slight lag almost unnoticeable but games were playable in general.
