Nexus S Stuttering - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Everyone,
I am having some issues with my Nexus S (GSM). This does not happen on the stock rom but it seems to happen on any rom I flash and it becomes very annoying. The phone would be operating normally and out of nowhere it stutters and becomes extremely slow for about 5-10 seconds after it which it vibrates twice and back to normal again. I have also noticed that if the phone is idle it almost always goes through the slow process once I start it up.
If I increase the cpu to 1.2 ghz or higher the problem seems to appear more often.
I am hoping someone will help me fix it because the problem is extremely annoying when it happens during voice calls as it cuts out and the other person cannot hear me. If not I guess I will have to sell it.
Anyone have any solutions or has the same issues?

I think I had the same problem from time to time, but only when I was using a case on my phone.
I would unlock the screen and the device would be super slow for a few seconds, then I'd get a couple of quick vibrations and it would be back to normal.
My guess was that the case was pressing one of the buttons in (maybe volume?) while unlocking and it somehow caused the retardation.
I haven't seen that problem since removing the case -- though maybe it was a coincidence and I'm using a different rom that fixed it? Not sure.
In any event I'm using NSCollab 1.0.39 if you want to give it a try.

Are u doing fresh installs when u switch between roms

I already have tried and still no success. Usually when i restart the phone it fixes it temporarily but it comes back after some time.
I wipe the data, cache and dalvik cache every time I flash a new rom. So yes it is a fresh install...

Nexus s problems

What's up xda forums.had a couple of concerns with my phone. my nexus s stock running 2.3.2 rooted and unlocked. Here are some of my issues so far
While driving and on the phone, sometimes the call drops after making a nasty sound and stays stuck on the hanging up screen and I can't make or receive a call till I reboot.
When turning the phone off sometimes and turning back on, the screen hangs for a while and 4 seconds later ill feel the phone vibrate 2-3 times and go back to normal in which its not lagging.
When opening my gallery the phone takes about 5 seconds to show me my thumbnails of my photos.it does this every time. Also when I take pictures it takes about 10 seconds to see the photo I took. When talking on the phone I drop alot of.calls or I hear the person sound like a chipmunk lol.
Is my phone messed up? Is the stock rom messed up? I flashed a stock image thru clockwork after I tried a alpha cm7build. Was it corrupted or is my phone a pos. My nexus one never gave me this many problems.
Any help would be great

Well, yeah, most of your problems have been mentioned by someone here at one point or another. Some of them have workarounds, some are waiting for fixes from Google.
I think if you try a few searches with the search button in this and the General section you'll find already lengthy discussions on most of those issues.
These problems started after you flashed back to stock?
Try clearing caches and reflash I guess.

Maybe even a fastboot oem unlock again to force a TOTAL WIPE of the phone. Be careful, sdcard contents are wiped too.

The only major issue I've had only happened once, and it happened for the first time yesterday: Without me touching the back button it started flashing and going back through the app I was in at great speed. It was rather frustrating but its only ever happened the one time.
What some people forget is that the Nexus One also had a lot of problems apon release,
All was ironed out by google

Im gonna try this right now. thanks for your help
I was able to make one of the problems repeat.. seems cause of the case i have everytime i hit the power button my thumb seems to hold down the volume rocker right in the middle. i then unlock the phone while its still tying to catch up from something.. cause 4 seconds later it will vibrate 2-3 times and the phone is back to reg speed.. there something wrong with my rom or can ya make this happen too?
Yup I get most of these issues too, it really spoils the experience. Next time I'm not gonna get a google phone straight upon release, it's really not worth the hassle. Also does anyone have problems with the wifi? Mine is horribly weak its a joke, struggles with wifi from my bedroom which my laptop and old Iphone 2g handled fine

If your phone has reboot issues please help out

For those of you who are experiencing the random reboot issue on the stock rom, would anyone be willing to do a factory reset without installing any apps and testing for a while to see if they still have the reboot?
I want to find out if this issue is a problem related to specific g2x's, or is triggered by some kind of software installed.
The reason why I want to test this out is because I have gone through 6 phones(waiting for 7th), and I can not recreate this problem on any of them running the same restored nandroid backup.
Also, for those of you who have gone through multiple g2x's, have you had phones with reboots and also ones without the issue
Since it seems LG is not recognizing this as a known issue, it most likely won't be fixed in the update they announced. Therefore its up tous to try find the cause of this issue whether it is device specific or due to certain apps installed.

6 phones? Did you ever once suspect the software?

I thougjt I clarified in my original post that none of mine had the reboot issue and I was not able to recreate it either.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
If it a software related issue, it couldn't be the ROM since some people have this issue on other roms. It could be the kernel but all g2x's come with the same kernel out of the box IIRC and only some people are having the issue.
EDIT: wow I'm really inaccurate typing in portrait mode

I never had a reboot issue in Arizona and I just got back to Ohio today and i have randomly rebooted 4 times today and I had to do a battery pull this morning... crack that nut for me
I went through 2 G2x's.
First one stock, rooted, and CM7 - all ways would reboot.
Second one, stock, rooted and CM7, all ways would reboot, so I tried it stock and CM7 without any added on apps - same results both stock and CM7.

It seems that people who are getting reboots, are getting reboots across multiple g2x's, while people who aren't getting reboots, don't have the issue across multiple g2x's. So there must be some kind of installed software related thing that is not playing nice and causing the phone to reboot itself. There isn't enough info in order to make a definite diagnosis to the source of the problem yet which is why I made this topic.
I feel that it's definitely software b/c I've been running the leak without any reboot issues. They still need to also fix the kernel too

what is confusing me is if it is software, why is it only affecting some people? the leak is running a different kernel so that could possibly be why you aren't getting reboots, but something must be triggering it that the people who have the issue have down/installed etc.

Orrrrr...perhaps it related to the network somehow? Strength of signal or need for the phone to switch between 4G/2G? Or perhaps trying to go to the ever elusive 3g (since I still haven't seen a report of someone actually seeing 3g in the notification bar). Maybe folks with reboots are in fringe areas and the phone oscillates between 4g and 2g and doesn't like it? Maybe those folks use their phones differently...leave BT on all the time and run apps that access GPS regularly. Or any other number of possibilities.
It's too easy to blame an app.
I know that one of the barcode scanning apps caused my phone to lock up, and sometimes reboot.

Thats why I'm asking people to participate in this experiment. By eliminating variables one by one we can try to single out the cause.
EDIT: also, the 4g signal shows for both 4g and 3g. The only way u can tell which one you are on is by going to "about phone". UTMS is 3g then there hspa(+).

Mine actually rebooted randomly very often. It didn't matter what rom I had (Stock, Eagle, CM7). I tried everything.... factory resets, removed apps, etc. It's just very random when it decides to reboot. Sometimes when I'm using google maps, sometimes when I'm trying to text, or when I'm playing with an app. It got so annoying that I had to return the phone.
I noticed that the times my G2x has rebooted was when it got hot. For example, if I charge it, talk and surf at the same time it will start getting hot and either freeze or reboot. Sometimes just charging it will freeze it.
I'm trying out a new battery and so far the phone seems to run cooler...its 25.2c right now and I've been playing with the phone for a while...with the stock battery I dont remember the temperature below 27c ever...sometimes with heavy use I would see it go as high as 43c...
it's only been one day with the new battery but I'll let you guys know how it behaves the next few days.

Well android leaves apps open. There is no exit button on the apps that kills it. I religiously kill tasks and check to see what's running. Is there any type of reporting app that will tell you what was running at the time of the reboot like maemo/N900 has?
As far as I know, I have not had one reboot. Has not been a full week though. If it was rebooting in the night, I guess I wouldn't know it.
Hell, I haven't had any real probs. My Gps was way off, but I rebooted it outside and it's been dead on since.
I love my G2X.
I just got an exchanged phone due to reboot/shutdown issues. I did not install any 3rd party software, and i had a shutdown that required a battery pull while it was on the factory charger.
Not sure if I should keep exchanging until I get one that works or not...

Keyboard lag

Has anybody been able to get rid of the keyboard lag that sometimes plagues this phone? Especially when texting
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I turned off the popup on keypress. It helps but it still lags. It seems worse when the message I'm typing starts getting longer.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I thought I was the only one having keyboard lag (among the screen not being always the most responsive). It's ridiculous especially when I factor in the random reboots (most of the time I have to pull the battery for it to respond, and the last reboot cause my phone to COMPLETELY reset...as in I had to set up everything again as if it was the first time I turned the phone on), and how it takes 2/3 seconds for the lock screen to kick in (when I press the power button to wake my phone it shows the screen I was last on before the screen locked) -- which might not be a huge issue for some, but I've never had this issue with any of my other phones, and the low ringer volume which really irritates me.
I have bleeding but it's nothing to noticeable and doesn't bother me right now because I dont really ever notice it.
I should receive a new one tomorrow and I'm hoping none of these issues are there
--- BTW, sorry for kind of going off topic. I apologize, meant no harm.
Yeah you are correct, the longer the message is, the worse it gets
I believe that I read that its a kernel issue
And to the above, what reason did I give them in order for them to trade it out?

I told the rep about the 4 reboots I had since I got the phone...which was 3 days before I called in, and how the last reboot seemingly wiped my phone and had me log in all my information as if it was the first timed I'd ever turned it on.
The rep told me I was his 3rd call that day for this issue but there were no notes on their system about problems with the phone or any updates to correct the issue(s)...needless to say, he sent me out a new one.
I will be getting it today. Hope it doesn't reboot. The bleeding I can deal with in all honesty, but if it reboots and the volume is as low as it is on my phone now I will have to return it for good and get another phone...and I don't want too.
Can you change the title of this thread to reference the gingerbread builds. Just so people don't get confused. This only applies to the leak gb and roms using it.

Help diagnose what's wrong with my Inspire

So I've been experiencing these weird bugs over the past couple months on many different ROMS and what not. Here's what happens:
1- Sometimes (I'd say every three days) when I power up my phone it boots and shows the homescreen but it's extremely laggy for about 30 seconds, it vibrates for about 3 seconds then acts normal.
2- Random parts of the screen become unresponsive. This happens daily, for example, when typing a text I can hit the t, f, h, and b keys but for some reasons the g will not respond. If I hit any other key it will vibrate as I have it set to do, but not the g, it will not vibrate or enter the letter in the text. And it isn't always the g, it changes letters each time.
3- The vibration feedback on the letters lag or go off an on. If I type a few words quickly it will vibrate maybe every other letter or not at all then catch up with one long vibrate.
These aren't major but they can be annoying. Any help will be much appreciated!
Bump. Anyone? Now everytime I text some of the letters are unresponsive and the phone vibrates erratically.

I've had about 6 different ROMs over the past few months and it has only started happening the last month or so. I just restarted my phone and now everything is back to working fine. I thought maybe it was glitching because of water damage but the indicator on my battery is white as ever. Could it be something I installed?

Very possibly. I just got done removing an app that started messing with my head, by way of weird **** happening with the keyboard.
Thing is, I hadn't yet run the app even once, but it decided to install itself as a service, nonetheless.
I had to check running services to figure out it had loaded without me even giving an initial run of the app.

I had similar issues when I first got the phone with the stock Rom before rooting or flashing roms. After I started flashing I never had the problems again. I recently went back to stock for the ota and the problems were back.

I've experienced this. I'm stock, but a thorough wiping of the area with a cloth (or shirt) made it responsive again. Weird, I know.
Try doing a FULL wipe before installing a rom.
I have had the same type issues in the past when trying to short cut and not do a full wipe first. The Full Wipe 1.3 makes it very easy and it seems most of the little bugs you are describing go away.
I for one will never flash a rom without doing a full wipe. The time saved troubleshooting is so well worth it!

Seriously. Every single dev recommends a full wipe prior to a new flash.
I've seen it mentioned often by devs that 99% of all problems people encounter are caused by left over **** from the previously installed rom, not to mention countless instances of "wiped this or that and reflashed...problem went away" by members in the rom threads.

Hi all,
Today while I was listening music and typing messages, all of a sudden the haptic feedback of my NS suddenly become very weak...
Weak as in the vibration was not that distinct anymore. It forced me to perform a reboot to make it normal again. Anybody experienced this? I have encounter this the 2nd time already.

Has happened to me as well on stock and deck's t and u rom.
Rebooting fixed it on stock and flashing back to r worked on decks.
I've not noticed it on the Nexus yet, however I did come across this issue on the moment as well as the epic.
Just like anything the battery can only pump out so much juice, the more you run the less everything is getting. so if you have 100% of your voltage and 3 pieces of hardware pulling from it screen, cpu/gpu, and lets say vib, that means you would only be getting 1/3 of full power to each.
Its hard to say exactly what it was unless you were running logcat, monitoring power consumption, and other factors.
Now, the odds are its a software glitch.
yes ive also experianced this only once awhile ago i felt it while typing messaging all the sudden it was just like boom 5% vibration no clue why though
Yep...its happened to me many times. Usually a reboot always fixes it.
Its few and far between, so nothing to really worry about I would guess.

Now that you mention it i am sure i have had this a few times.... never really thought too much about it though
I've also noticed it, although again its rare enough to not bother me, and a reboot always fixes it. Just one of those little fixable bugs I guess.
thanks all,
good to hear this. actually its not that annoying cause this seldom happens.
after owning NS for 6 months this happens twice only so its alright not much of a big problem
