i would like to install this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098849
now this is where i get confused ??? on the rooting guide he says i can install roms without losing data apps etc but on the rom guide he says i must use super wipe script before installing ? which do i do ? if i have to wipe i dont want to lose apps or contacts especially contacts what would be the best way to backup these and restore?
sorry if this is a silly question but as stated im an android virgin and this is all a lot to take in my head hurts off all the reading !
thanks

Most ROM's will only work there best if you do a full wipe first, the best option is to use Titanium backup then restore everything afterwards is the best option. Or what other tool(s) you want to use to backup the information and settings, contact export to SD then import after
If you just install the ROM without doing a full wipe, 9 times out of 10 all your settings remain, even though it says it is wiping things.

[Q] If I install a new ROM without wipe? ...

If I install a new rom without all wipe written guides, and risk the "brick" or simply the need to do later? I do not want to reinstall all applications, I am going to install a new rom, and I am afraid of my phone unusable. Thanks in advance
Notes: translation with google translator, and I wanted to post here ^ rom, but being a newbie I can not. With regard to questions like, did not answer the question "brick"
If you install without wiping the cahce, Dalvik cache, and data, then you run the risk of your ROM not working properly. It's pretty hard to brick your phone. If you don't want to trouble with reinstalling EVERYTHING then I suggest you check out Titanium Backup Pro in the android market, it will help you out a lot. It can backup all of your apps as well as the data with the app, your contacts, wifi connection points, etc. Not only will it back up everything, but if you buy the pro version, it will also install everything for you as well (Automatically of course.) It takes seriously like 20 minutes to get all your apps back, and and usually it's a bit shorter depending on the amount of apps you have. As always though, before flashing a new ROM/Kernel/Radio etc make a complete Nandroid backup in CWM.

When I first installed a custom rom without a wipe it worked well, for about 3 minutes. I would get random freezes in which the only way to get out would be a battery pull. I eventually thought I broke my phone (since I was a noob) and flashed a return to stock package. End of story, wipe before flashing!

If your not prepared to do all the needed steps to flash a custom rom then maybe you shouldn't be flashing roms.

[Q] Can I flash 2.3.5 with CWM without data loss?

For some reason I find mixed answers to this simple question:
I have CWMv4.0.1.4, I rooted with Ace Hack Kit months ago. I am currently running 2.3.3. I would like to update to a ROM with 2.3.5, is there any way to do this without data loss?
Some people seem to say if you use CWM update from SD card option, you don't lose data, other people emphatically answer YES YOU ALWAYS LOSE DATA ALWAYS. Which is it?
Thanks

The sdcard data will remain intact...the phone data can be kept but it is always best to do a full wipe to avoid bootloops or malfunctioning.
Just make a backup of your apps with titanium backup and restore it afterwards...also make a nandroid backup of your current rom just in case...
I also use SMS Backup+ to back up all my text messages to my Gmail account to be restored after I change ROMs.

[Q] New guy here, I could use some help with ROM

Hello, I got HTC Sensation XE, and I was thinking of upgrading my ROM to ViperS.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671547
I got a few questions about upgrading my ROM..
1. If I upgrade to ViperS, and I am not happy with my new ROM, am I able to move back to the normal Android (I guess this is called ''flashing''..?)
2. Am I able to use every app from the Google play store?
3. I suppose this ViperS ROM will work with my Sensation XE as well..?
4. Does upgrading ROM harm/damage files, phone, or anything?
5. Am I going to have problems with Wi-fi after upgrading? (I've heard some guys have had problems with wifi)
EDIT: More questions:
1. What ''unlocks/mods'' do I need to do to upgrade ROM? By ''mods'' I mean things such as rooting and S-Off etc.
2. Which should I do first? Flash? Root? HTC Dev unlock?
3. Is Super Utility easiest way to root? It seems like it is the best one for it, since 90% happens with PC.
4. Last one, is flashing boot.img = ROM flashing..? Or is Installing .zip from recovery = ROM flashing? The Super Utility has ability to flash boot.img and installing .zip once I have HTC Dev unlocked.
Once again, thanks already.
(Yes I have googled and checked all over the forums, but I want to be 100% sure of everything, I don't want to destroy my quite new phone)
Thanks for help!

Hi,
Follow THIS GUIDE to the letter
1.Make a nandroid backup (in backup and restore in 4 EXT)
2.Should be able to,once you have rooted
3.yes
4.Should be OK
5.Follow the guide above.
I've ran viper for a long time before flashing to jelly bean and I never had any problems with Wi-Fi or tethering. I upgrade or flash a lot and never had any trouble luckily. Yes the play store will work perfectly with viper. I think everything will go fine. Are you s off? If not don't forget to flash boot image. If your s off all you need to do is wipe cash and wipe dalvik and wipe data factory reset. Do this in 4ext recovery then choose zip and install then reboot. You will be good to go.
Hope this answers your questions. Also for any applications you want to keep use titanium backup for that. Remember to do you're nandroid backup before you flash anything this way if you get into a pinch you can always restore your previous rom. This is very important and a good practice to have as a safe guard. Happy flashing. Best wishes

[Q] Wipe data and cache

I am getting desparate with my phone state SGS3, as funny things are happening like it suddenly goes crazy and opens apps after apps etc... Also applications that can not be traced, I am currently on 4.1.2 XXELL4 version, and I got advised to wipe data partition and cache, which as I understand it quite risky process of losing what I have, so do PLEASE inform is there a safe way, like you guys develop programs for us amateurs to do it automatically and safely, regaining our previous phone state?
My intention is to really get rid of junks I have on my phone and get a nice new obedient one I had before?
Thank you
You should make a backup of all apps and contacts ( for contacts you can sync with google) and then go into recovery mode and do wipe data factory reset and wipe cache partition. Finally do reboot system now and then reinstall the app backup and restore contacts.
I hope i help you and i wait for your news.
Hoping you have a recovery mode called cwm, and are aware of it,
You can wipe cache and data
It would get your phone back in state as if it were out of the manufacturer's factory!
All apps you've installed would be wiped out

Thank you so much for your reply, actually I do have CWM on my phone but when I run it is says it should be used with CF-CWM v1.1 or newer and that I am running different recovery and various features has been disabled, so I did not follow your advise yet, can you guide me in this matter also? the one I hace is CWM manger v3.60.
Further to that contacts I have backup but for the rest of my programs will Titanium Backup (not pro version) do for me to call back and restore all of it?

Can you Please also consider my other questions and guide me accordingly, thank you and wishing you great New Year!
Use a higher version of cwm...I'm sure it would be floating around in xda
Also just do a factory reset from settings or flash a new rom that should solve the issue
And Use TB Pro ..(just a suggestion) much more useful and worth the price...That can restore app's data and app alone as you wish...

[Q] Factory reset with flashed ROM

Hi,
I have an HTC Desire S rooted with a ROM using 4Ext Recovery (this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525100)
I want to give my brother the phone but first wipe all data from it (texts, installed apps, phone numbers)
How can I do this without risking bricking the phone? I have looked for advice online but find conflicting instructions.
Thanks
