This topic is intended for those few Motorola XT720 users.
As you well know, Motorola, in their infinite wisdom, have created a gimped phone that seems to have mostly problems about it rather than advantages.
For a start, they have underclocked the CPU from its possible theoretical maximum of 1GHz to a paltry 550 MHz (and the update only unlocked an on-demand setting of up to 720 MHz). Secondly, the included launcher is actually inferior to both stock Vanilla Eclair and most other 3rd party launchers. It is sluggish and never quite feels smooth (especially so when browsing your apps or switching panels).
So what is the solution to the above problems and how to make your XT720 truly fly and feel comparable to most any other high-end smartphone? Simple, I say!
I won't tell you how to do these steps, but I can provide info and know-how-to if people ask me to:
0) Install Astro File Manager from the Market.
1) Root your device. Use Universal Androoter to do this. Try to go for latest possible version you can find. Your phone will not be able to find it on the Market so try Google.
2) Go to http://code.google.com/p/milestone-overclock/ and download the basic program to overclock your XT720. The program allows you to do 'real' (actual) overclock of up to 1.2 GHz, but your CPU will be unstable in this speed. Instead, opt for 1GHz, which is not a 'real' overclock, since the Texas Instr. CPU inside your phone is actually able to run at this speed natively.
3) Download SetCPU or get it from XDA.
Have it 'automatically' configure / find your CPU speed and then set it up as such:
Make sure the upscale governor is set to at least 85. Mine is at 86.
a) Fully Charged / Plugged In: Min/Max at 1000MHz (Performance) [55]
b) Below 40% Min 550 / Max 1000 (On Demand) [60]
c) Below 20% Min 500 / Max 550 (On Demand) [65]
d) While Screen Turned Off Min 150 / Max 500 (On Demand) [70]
Make sure all settings are set to 'Enable' and 'auto-run' is checked.
4) Download Zeam Today Launcher from the Market. It is free. Install it and press Home. Try it once to be sure and safe, but afterwards make sure you set it to 'default' (so that it launches as the default launcher).
Restart your phone and voila. Enjoy XT720 as you never have before.....
I have an HTC Desire and a Samsung Galaxy S and I promise you that my XT720 feels (almost) as snappy as they, and that's a huge difference in improvement, given that I felt that the XT720 was one of the sluggiest phones I had ever have to experience! Now it can finally unlock its full potential.
EDIT: Realised I accidentally posted this in the wrong subsections. This was done unintentionally. Please can some mod move it to the 'General' section?
Thanks for your post, grcd! Just some questions...
Do all 0 to 4 have to be done, & in that order? Or can I choose any?
What is Astro File Manager for? Is it needed to do 1 to 4?
Edit: ok, so 2 & 3 need root. But are 0 & 4 necessary or only recommended?
Edit: ok, I can choose among different file managers for 0, & among different launchers for 4.
& I can't find a single appropriate page on universal androoter on google? Except your post.
Edit: oops, found universal androot! Sorry, noob
very usefull
thanx
My friend just got one of these and I've been trying to find some good resources but can't seem to turn anything up.
Are them any development forums for this model out there? And are there any custom roms out or is the stock rom, rooted, overclocked with cleaned up the bloatware the best you can get?

XT720 bootloader is locked and currently there's no known method to attack it. So, no custom ROMs. For Optimization, check the below link. You'll need to root your phone first (either One Click Root via PC or using Universal Androot apk).
this optimizer script got Busybox, Apps2SD, JIT from Froyo, custom build.prop, removing unnecessary apps and custom themes.
Code:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/motorola-milestone-xt720/74284-guide-milestone-xt720-apps2sd-froyo-jit.html
App2sd is a must, the internal memory for this phone is too small. I even put a class 10 micro sd in it.
Thanks for the optimization link, spiderx_mm! I'll do that too but it will take me a bit longer to be confident in doing that.
Meanwhile, the overclocking++ advice above seemed to help at the start, but little by little, my XT720 was lagging again, & lagging longer & longer. Does this happen to others?
I'm also encountering weird problems, like Dolphin Browser HD 4.2 tabs reloading from the web even for conditions when it's supposed to reload from the cache. So I'm also trying to reverse the process tio isolate the problem, but I have a few questions.
Once the setcpu modifications are done, can I unroot? It seems to me no, because I would think root is needed to change the clock on the fly? But if I simply overclock without using setcpu, then it seems to me that I can unroot without undoing the overclock changes?
While at this, is there an important sequence to follow to reverse the whole process? Do I have to set setcpu to the clock that I want to revert to before reverting the clock? I would experiment on my own except for the risk of bricking
Tia!
@grcd Will this improve camera response and hd video recording quality?
@spider thanks for the link. I'll give that a shot. I'm assuming since it hasn't been done yet, that no one is working to unlock the bootloader?
@reggie you will most definitely need to retain root to use setcpu. The app setcpu is what's actually changing the scaling itself, that's why there's the 'set at boot' option, bc the app has to set it everytime. Because the kernel just has overclock capabilities, but not overclocked by default, you will always need setcpu or a similar app to do the actual overclock. Why would you want to unroot anyways? If your having issues, I would recommend using system panel for a few days and see if somethings bogging your system down, it has great monitoring functions. I've yet to do the optimization, but I can't imagine anything there is what's causing you to have lag issues..

You can replace it with any other file explorer of your like and choice. The basic idea is to get root, and using Universal Androoter is the only way I know of for the XT7220 that is user friendly. Afterwards the rest is simple, using the overclocking app and SetCPU.

I have also been looking into this optimizing script. Will try it and hopefully it improves things even more.

I noticed that too, so my initial excitement wore off. It seems that I was a bit wrong and some XT7220 devices will not happily run at 1GHz without some lag issues. Try lowering your speed to the next step down and see if that helps -- this might mean running at 800MHz, which is a mere 80MHz overclock, but whatever).
The optimizer script might help speed some things further up. But I haven't tried it yet. Also, Apps2SD will definately help as the phone has little internal memory, so the more apps that are there then the slowest things will get over time.
I am not sure of the ways to unroot to be entirely honest, but I guess you have to check FAQs for Universal Androoter to see if the process is reversable. As about the rest, it is quite simple: Just uninstall SetCPU (it might help to return the clock to its normal speed, but uninstalling it will do it anyway I suppose), and then use the Milestone Overclock to return the speeds to the stock speeds. Then uninstall that too.

AFAIK it will not. Or it might, but the differences are negligible. I am afraid that unless there is a custom ROM or a complete kernel hack, significant improvements in the camera department might be hard to come by.
It's very sad how badly Motorola dropped the ball with this phone. I admit I gave up on it and sold it to a friend for cheap.

While update 3053 (December 10) gave me a tremendous improvement in speed and stability, I noticed that after update 3389 (December 23) my tablet appears to be affected with some sort of speed degradation when it comes out of an extended sleep period. Short sleep periods do not appear so far to affect it.
I already had this happen twice out of two tries. The best place for me to see this is when I attempt to use gestures in Dolphin Browser HD v4.2. The browser does not follow my finger as I draw the gesture. Instead of the gesture I draw on the screen I just get random lines.
I can also see a difference in how the TnT app drawer opens and how my screen taps are detected in general or how a website scrolls on the screen.
A power OFF power ON fixes this until the next extended sleep period. In my case the extended sleep period was a couple of hours.

I saw a post last conjecturing that there's a governor, so I did some Googling and found:
http://tegradeveloper.nvidia.com/tegra/forum/cpufreq-tegrastats
I checked on my Gtab, still on older stock TNT, and min freq was 216000 vs. Max 1000000. Maybe if min freq was set to 1000000, you wouldn't see the slowdown?

Download an app called advanced task killer. Kill all the apps that randomly pop on to phone home... Speed restored for me at least...
One of the devs recommended using Autostarts to kill all instances of Calendar. Seems to have done the trick for me.
-=Sent from my VS GTablet (VEGAn b4) using Tapatalk=-
This issue has affected ZPad and now Vegan ROM too for some time, so it's not just in the new 3389 update. However, it happened only infrequently in Vegan beta3 and happens all the time in Vegan beta4, and according to the TNT Lite thread, it is happening more with TNT Lite 3.1.0 to many people too.
And apparently it's affecting the new 3389 update more too, based on this thread.
In Vegan beta4, blocking the Calendar process with Autostarts doesn't change the issue at all for me, though Rothnic and others said that fixed the issue in Vegan beta3.
Vegan beta4 and the 3389 update and TNT Lite 3.1.0 all share the same new kernel I believe. I suspect that some change in the new kernel compile by Tap N Tap has made the problem worse. Just a guess though.

Kernel is the same, that's correct. It's probably a good place to start and I suspect even stock is affected. One step forward, two steps back?
I use a Startup Manager, as well. Lots of the gapps like to start up in memory, on boot. On my old Pandigital build, I would actually delete any apks that I didn't use.
Maybe someone who has 3389 can try setting those min freq values mentioned in #2?
It's pretty easy using su/term.

There's an Overclock tool i the Market that should also work (the name escapes me, at the moment - testing 3.1.1 right now).

Jim, I have been using Overclock Widget to set min 512000/max 1000000 for some time now. The short answer is that it doesn't make a bit of difference to the lag-on-wake problem. I haven't tried 1000000/1000000 for any extended period of time because I suspect it will drain battery pretty fast.
Just some observations and suggestions...
I've been reading posts all morning about 3389 speed degregation and other issues. For me, I installed TnT Lite 3.1 cleanly last night, and I haven't seen any of the issues being reported. My camera works fine. My gtab comes out of sleep and connects to wifi ready for use. Although, I don't use live wallpaper, but Roebeet already said he will address this issue. The only reported issue I see is the Market stars being cut off, which is a known issue with the Tnt Framework. To my pleasure, everything else for me is working just fine.
Last night, my gtab was slow for a while because of the SD scan (I do agree it does take a long time). This morning, I have been taking my gtab in and out of sleep with no issues or speed degregation to report.
I see folks constantly asking Roebeet if they need to do a data wipe to install the updated custom package. The rule of thumb should be yes. It doesn't take long to restore everything. The longest time is to restore the applications from Titanium Backup, and for me with close to 50 applications it only takes 15 minutes or so to complete. I always do a data wipe (factory reset), cache wipe, and dalvik clean, etc. before I install the custom update unless otherwise stated by Roebeet. My suggestion is if you haven't done so is to do a full clean install.

Hi,
Thanks. I'm new to Android, but not to *nix, so was just curious. It may be that VS disabled or didn't include the governors in their kernel? I guess you/we won't know until they provide kernel source, and hopefully their build parameters...

Who here has the problem and does not have gapps installed?
I am running 3389 with the TnT enhancement pack and haven't had the issue yet.

I didn't seem to have the issue until I installed the gapps. How do I uninstall the gapps, can I just reapply the 3389 update zip?
Edit: I will admit that I didn't have 3389 on very long before adding the gapps but I am pretty sure I had at least one sleep cycle in there somewhere. I have never seen this lag before on prior VS updates though and it is pretty annoying.
Rothnic
I downloaded your enhancement pack and installed as you suggested. I lost:
ES file manager
android apps
viewsonic g market
Talk
PHotos
Angry Birds is present but I have lost all of my user data.
The speed seems to be a little faster than pure stock was but as I understand your post the enhancement pack was supposed to simiply add the speed features and the android market on top of the 3389 update. Any idea on how to correct this?

Right this does remove a few things that tnt lite removes. It also replaces some apps. Most of the apps you list you can download from the official Google market that it installs. It also installs galley 3d, which is a better photo app. The viewsonic market isn't needed when you have the Google one.
Also, it doesn't touch user data.

I'm pretty sure that it is the calendar and maybe contacts sync from Google. I don't include those in the tnt enhancement pack, so I think it may be immune.
You could reinstall 3389, then install the enhancement pack.

Is this something a user has to do every time the performance degrades? I'd rather have Viewsonic fix it.

I have just done described in post #2 using the terminal and su. Fortunately path do match, so it was matter of typing it in.

FAQ for [ROM][CM10][Kang][Pyramid][RC][4.1.2]
This is a FAQ for users who would like to start (or just have) with Bruce's amazing ROM and run into issues.
The development thread is frequently seeing already-answered questions, frustrating many others
and drastically blowing up the thread.
Thank you Bruce for your great work and allowing us to experience a revitalized Sensation!
Obviously also big THANKS to the whole CM team, whoever you are!
In order to help out those users and lessen Bruce's workload to follow the thread, this should be a community effort,
so please feel free to post any items that need to be added or mistakes were made (I wrote this up from memory).
I'm bad with names, so I apologise beforehand to not plug every username here, thanks to whoever contributed!
If you are new to the rom: please take at least a few minutes to use the SEARCH feature FIRST with corresponding keywords
before posting a question, chances are pretty good that it's been answered already (many times).
Mods: if I missed to follow any guideline here, please let me know and I'll fix asap.
Q: I'm on a different ROM, what should I do?
A: Read the full first post as it already includes hints for installation.
You should then also check to have a current firmware (3.32 at least).
The first post has 2 different download links, one or both of them will have
the current version. If you do not see it in the first link (the >>>I AGREE <<< link),
just think for a second and click the mirror link!
There's also a link to a current gapps package (install from recovery as well).
If you think you need different versions, please search the dev forum first before asking,
there are plenty of tweaked/inverted versions out there.
Q: I'm on a previous build of Bruce's, what should I do?
A: just install the current build over it, you do not need to manually wipe dalvik/cache as the install does it already.
Q: Do I need a different kernel or can I switch to a different kernel?
A: Bruce included his own tweaked kernel. Other kernels (like tamcore) may also work,
but also may break things that Bruce had explicitly built in.
I haven't yet seen clear evidence that switching to another kernel offers anything, so
my personal opinion is: don't mess with it, just because you read about some fancy
tweak in another rom's thread.
Q: My data icon keeps flickering/bad connections?
A: this is a often discussed issue with unclear cause (as of now) and happened not only
to TMO users in the US, but also in other countries.
Yesterday it was reported, that getting a new SIM card fixed this issue (at least for
several months for another user).
Please search the thread also for more details/investigations by SkipJacks.
Q: There are graphical issues with Chrome?
A: This has been a known issue for weeks and still needs fixing (either Chrome gets fixed or new display drivers are released).
Q: Where can I find the option to dis-/enable the screen off CRT animation?
A: Settings -> Developer options: set "Window animation scale" to "0.5" or "off"
Q: Is it possible to have Sense widgets?
A: No, not the same Sense ones (this is a different software base). Check Play Store for widgets.
Q: How do I enable/disable Sweep2Wake?
This is disabled by default. To change this, it requires a mounted /system partition.
Use a root-enabled file explorer like the free "ES File Explorer", which has extra root
options to auto-mount it in read/write-mode (thus enable that option).
Then go edit this file as text:
Code:
/system/etc/init.d/89bruce
In it are separate sections for sweep2wake, tun and badass governor, like
Code:
SWEEP2WAKE=0
Change the value 0 to one of the values described right there in the file, read carefully!
Some changed settings can be activated by executing it in a terminal.
If unsure how to do that, do a manual reboot.
Q: The default badass governor behaves differently (or you experience lag)?
Proceed as with above answer, but this time change this line:
Code:
BADASS=2
The default is fairly well for battery, but set value to 1 to activate higher max. frequency.
Q: The camera does not have previous picture sizes, like 16:9?
Oct 25 build has the camera options now also list "8 16:9", "8 5:3" etc.
Q: My facebook app displays wrong/huge fonts?
A: Reported and confirmed by many to be a FB app issue after last weeks FB updates.
Q: My facebook app does not sync?
Syncing was removed by FB some while ago, but can be done by other apps (HaxSync?)
Q: Wifi hotspot does not work?
A: this is currently reported to be broken (Oct 25), but Bruce will certainly take care of it
when he has the time. Please do not report this repeatedly or ask him daily, also
follow the release notes.
Q: Call volume or headphone volume is out of whack?
A1: at least once after rom install, use volume rockers to set max volume and then
back down to normal level.
A2: Settings -> Sound -> uncheck "Safe headset volume"
Q: Can I install BeatsAudio?
A: with some extra package installed, probably (needs an extra sense framework),
search the dev forum for it.
but it might interfere with the built-in "DSP Manager" and cause other issues.
Please reply for answers to add... and hit Thanks if this helped you.
See next posts for more...!
Cheers
Tobias
PART 2:
Q: Better Battery Stats (or other battery app) is showing hours of Alarm Manager Wakelocks attributed to Google Services, what do I do?
A1: please read SkipJacks' post (page 1460!) about an investigation we did the last couple of days about it, excerpt:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We used System Tuner Pro to disable some of the start up items in the Google Services Framework.
Additionally we froze GTalk and Gnow (Google Search). And no, you can't just freeze those two apps.
The GSF will still create wakelocks when trying to activate them. So you have to modify the GSF as well.
These are the things that I disabled in the GSF using System Tuner Pro (other apps may work as,
such as ROM Toolbox Pro etc., all available in the market).
gtalkservice.diagnostits.gtalkdiagnostics
update.systemupdateactivity
gtalkservice.connection autherrordialog
talk.talkprovider
settings.googlesettingsprovider
gservices.gservicesprovider$override reciever
checkin.checinservices$reciever
checkin.checkinservices$triggerreciever
checkein.eventlogservices$receiver
gtalkservice.diagnostics.gtalkdiagnosticsbroadcast reciever
gtalkservice.serviceautostarter
gtalkservices.datamessagereciever
gtalkservice.sendxmppreciever
gtalkservices.packageinstalledreciever
gtalkservice.xmppendpointreciever
loginservice.serviceswatcher (You might try reactivating this one to see what happens)
usagestates.statsuploadservice$reciever
checkin.evenlogservice
gtalkservice.service.stalkservice
gtalkservice.pushmessagingregistar
You can freeze the GSF entirely with 1 easy step and that will also kill the wakelocks. But the Play Store becomes another casualty if you do that. Disabling the events above will stop the Google Services wakelocks dead in their tracks, and allow the Play Store to continue working. (Though I haven't tried purchasing a paid app yet)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is based on current 4.1.2 gapps, but may well be valid for previous builds.
A2: In general, unless utterly needed, disable any "sync" settings in individual apps, such as Calendar, Settings -> Google account etc. and don't forget to switch off BT and/or GPS when you don't need it.
Q: My mobile data icon blinks on and off, what do I do?!
T Mobile USA users may experience issues with mobile data going on and off in about 1 second intervals. The "H" will just blink continuously. The problem is how the AOSP framework interacts with the T Mobile USA data network. It is intermitent, and usually cures itself within an hour or two. This will occur in ALL AOSP ICS and JB roms for the Sensation. (CM9, CM10 Variants, AOKP, etc)
While a cure is constantly being researched, nothing final is upon us as of yet. The best thing you can do is turn data off and leave it off for an hour or two and see if it works later. If you must try to fix it right now there are a few things that may help, but understand they are temporary fixes.
Sending yourself a text message.
Calling to your phone.
Making a call from your phone.
Going into airplane mode for a minute then back to normal.
Sometimes these tricks work because they either force the network to either re-register or authenticate your phone. Sometimes they don't work.
If you absolutely positive must have data working right now, flash a Sense or Desensed ROM. This problem does not exist in Sense ROMs.
See this thread for more details about what does and doesn't help.
Q: I have no or issues with WiFi?
A: Read here.
-- BIG thanks to Skipjacks for the above (and me a little )
Q: The dialer/phone or gallery app does not show?
A: Having installed other tweaks or (inverted) gapps may have caused this. Try reverting any changes made.
If this persists, a fresh, clean install should be fixing it in any case.
Q: GPS is not working correctly?
A1: suggested apps to try out: "Faster Fix", "GPS Status" or simialr in market
A2: Settings -> Location access -> GPS source.. there check "Use internal GPS"
A3: "go outside!" (thanks Catnap, that made me laugh!)

Q: I have a problem with feature X! Is this ROM broken?
A: Can you reproduce the problem after a full wipe, install the ROM (& gapps)? If not, it's not the ROM.

Q: What to do about slow SD card transfer speeds?
A1: A solution I would recommend: MultiMount SD Card app
A2: Mount USB from within 4ext and transfer's should be at full speed

Q.: Where did my video/picture/ringtone/music files go? They are on the SDcard but I can't see them in Apollo, the Gallery, etc.
A: Apps will not scan folders for media if they have a hidden file called .nomedia (with the dot in front!) in them.
Certain root apps have been known to put such a file in the main folder of the SD card itself, causing all photos, etc., to vanish. To fix, use a file manager like ES and enable View Hidden Files in the settings. Check the main folder of your SDcard (and others, if you like) and delete .nomedia wherever you want to be able to see media - especially the root directory of the SDcard. Then - and this is important - turn the phone OFF and reboot it (Restart may not be enough). This forces Android to rescan the card and your media will reappear.

Q: I have terrible battery life. After some browsing, phone calls etc. my battery is down from 100% to 50% in just one hour.
A: Do this battery test, charge to 100%. Set display brightness to 100%. Set timeout to 30 minutes. Disable WiFi, Bluetooth, Sync, GPS. Unplug the charger and just leave the phone at the home screen. Touch it after 30 minutes and let it sit for another 30 minutes. If you battery is below <insert a normal batterys percentage here> you might consider a new battery. So it's not the ROM!
(I don't know what actual value is supposed to be there, yikes...)

Q: What kernel should I install?
A: The rom comes with it's own tweaked kernel (3.0.48 as of Oct 25).
You should not install other kernels, that are not explicitly made for Jelly Bean! The rom's libraries (a higher layer than the kernel) depend mostly on having functions and versions to be on the same "level" and could cause FCs/reboots if something is out of sync.
The Linux kernel contains drivers for: Display, Keypad, Camera, Wifi, Flash Memory, Audio, Power Mgmt etc. and as such it is specific to your phone model (different hardware likes chipsets, display etc.).
The kernel is under constant development, so mostly it's about fixing things, but in rare events there may be an issue introduced with it.
If that happens to you, you could either wait for one of the next frequently updated builds or revert to a previous build if need be.
Contributed by aVe2000 (thank him if it helped you):
- start Google Search|go to Settings|disable Google now
- use a tool like autostarts*|disable everything with gtalk, youtube, picasa uploader and (g)maps in it's name
(other tools also capable of that: Android/System Tuner, ROM Toolbox etc.)
- go to the sync profiles|disable all you do not really need (e.g. mail: sync manually)
- dont use any live wallpapers
- dont use widgets that automatically update its contents
- go to Settings|Performance|Processor|choose BADASS and then ... change init.d/89bruce file for badass to '3'
- additionally disable News & Weather with the autostarts* tool if not needed
- go to Settings|Backup & reset|Disable backup data
- disable all location based stuff or turn off as soon as no longer needed
- go to Settings|Display and disable automatic light adjustments

Just to be sure: if you have a rom build before Sept 5 you should also upgrade to the current build.
We should ask the moderators to delete the posts between the first post and the second part of your FAQ... I already requested the removal of my post! If we leave it like this, people will often not realize that there is a second part...
Ask bruce to add ur thread in his op.. also u didnt answer how to get rid of "g-locks"

It's definitely there. The camera settings' 2nd options screen does show you the "Picture size" option, right?
Clicking the "right" arrow will list "8 16:9", "8 5:3" and "8" then.

@tobitege.. i had to install the gallery 2 apk for it.. but after that when i reflashed the rom it didnt go away.. i dunno what happened b4.. will have to c in later builds if it persists..
And yes i m totally unable to get the 16:9 ratio 8mp camera shot.. as posted by someone to flash a file for it.. it didnt work at all for me.. i think it was toryheal or something.. but can u make out y it doesnt work for me??
Also about the battery.. i just examined it.. i got from 100 to 30 in 1 hours 15 mins with screen on all the time wifi on all the time.. played medium games like jetpack joyride browsed the web.. then i continued to use it on n till i reached 2 %.. suprisingly i got 2 hours 20 mins of "screen on" with 4 hours on battery..on 25th oct build without solving the g-lock issue.. do u think my battery is gone or is it a good battery outcome??

Yes, first try flashing again without any wiping. If that still won't work, a full wipe/fresh install might be needed.
I installed bean stalk 2 days ago and really like it except for my swift key 3 keyboard loses its ability to do predictive text. I have to force close it and reopen it to get it to work again. It seems the problem occurs when i uses a text box that doesn't allow predictive text, then it losses prediction util i close and restart it. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing it. Is there anything that could be done or an i missing something?
Oh yes it also has really poor battery life, is this normal? too

The poor battery life is normal cause i have experience with that too.. You have to be patient and let the ROM settle in for a few days.. But on your swift key i suggest you use rapid typing style and change your "spacebar will..." to complete the current word. If you use those options it should work fine for you. But good luck :fingers-crossed: (Hit that thanks button bellow please lol)

I don't think deleting them will cause any harm. Maybe you could move them to a different folder instead of deleting them, then see what happens and go from there. But I'm pretty confident that you'll be fine deleting them.

I've done it in the past, yes. You can add your own ringtones to it and they'll show up, so why wouldn't they disappear when you delete them?

Ok so I did it again right now, just for you, and yes they can be deleted. So it is clear you're not mounting /system as rw.

Where are you doing this from (es file explorer, etc)?
Wakelocks and other small issues
Hey guys, just to input to what has been asked here, I had problems mounting earlier as well, but with root explorer (Rom toolbox) and the file manager that comes with the ROM, but it worked with ES file explorer when I deleted system files. As for swiftkey, I don't have it so can't input for that. Anyway here's my problem (sorry for hijacking the thread, but just posting here as well since there was a reply much more recently than Beanstalk Q&A thread):
I'm new to beanstalk ROM and recently installed the kit kat build posted on new year's eve coming from carbon 4.3. I have performed all necessary wipes (data, cache, dalvik, system) and installed Gapps posted by vaughn in the dev thread. I am just wondering if anyone has experienced wakelocks caused by android system, exchange services and google services? So far, when I searched xda and googled the problems, I only found solutions for google services and exchange services which were to turn off sync (exchange services) and location (G-services), but for some reason my system is still experiencing a wakelock from g-services and I'm not sure how to get rid of it...by the way, I clean flashed the ROM a second time (but wiped my internal sd also this time) to see if that would help but so far it hasn't. I've been running the ROM for 3-4 days now if that's important.
My other questions are does anyone have misaligned icons in active display and also slightly misaligned number in the battery ring icon (i think this was reported in dev thread) and will installing SuperSu fix the problem with V4A asking for superuser rights, but then when I try to install driver, it asks me to check if I'm rooted or have su binaries? Thanks in advance for any help!
I have uninstalled updates for google play services and it updated back and now it seems to have gone down in my battery stats. Now only thing left is android system.
Edit: with new Gear Manager (Jun release), this method doesn't work anymore. The new approach is to install a "contact synchroniser killer" app on the rooted watch. More details are in this post.
==================================================================================================================================================================================
Hi all,
Ever since I started using my Gear 2 Neo with my HTC One M8 phone (using the guide in this forum), I noticed that my watch consumes battery significantly faster than most of the users have been reporting. Even more strangely, sometimes after resetting both the phone and the watch (and I've done this a lot while experimenting and trying to get more stuff working) I had streaks of stellar battery life, well in line with optimistic reports here and elsewhere, but then, after a while, it started deteriorating very quickly.
So I decided it was time to do something about it. I installed Tizen SDK, hooked the watch up and started poking around. The first thing I noticed my watch CPU was, most of the time, sitting on 40%! Well, that doesn't sound right, does it? Then I noticed the log (located under /var/log/dlog_main) was full with messages related to contact synchronisation. It turns out the damn thing synchronises all of my contacts every several seconds. The trouble is I have well over 1500 contacts (that's consolidated from different sources, the number of raw contacts should be well over 3000). So it takes significant time to do this, meaning my watch (and the phone!) are thrashed by these stupid full contact syncs all the time! What's even more striking is the fact it doesn't help when I change it to "favourites only". Apparently, this affects only the contacts displayed on the watch, however, the sync process still takes all of them.
At this point I started poking around Samsung APK files to try and understand what was going on. Apparently, the APK responsible for contact sync is called GOPROVIDERS. Indeed, if you kill it, the thrashing stops, however, other important functions cease working as well. Aside of Contacts vanishing from the Gear, "Find my phone" is gone as well, but, more importantly, notifications stop working. While I could tolerate the first two, the last one was too much to give up.
I started decompiling and analysing sources. Apparently, there is a process running every several seconds that analyses if any changes have been made to the contacts. It uses pretty bizarre logic which seems to be relying on Samsung-specific fields in the contacts. Now, this already sounds suspicious, and, apparently, leads to full sync every several seconds. Obviously, the more contacts you have, the harder you're hit.
An interesting point in all this is that I'm not 100% sure the logic is working properly even on Samsung devices, so it might well be that the same issue is affecting people with high number of contacts using Samsung phones as well. I'd be really interested to see any feedbacks regarding this.
So, long story short, instead of fixing the logic (which is quite difficult in SMALI), I made a simple change which dilutes this logic invocations, right now 1:64. Since then I'm enjoying MUCH improved battery life.
The fixed APK is attached. You're welcome to give it a try at your own risk (you need to enable installation from untrusted sources + reboot and clean dalvik cache).

In the fixed APK the logic is actually invoked 1 time out of 64 attempts. It makes its frequency about every 40 minutes instead of every 30 seconds.

Guys, everyone with abnormal drain, it would be extremely helpful to troubleshoot your root cause if you could send me the log file from your watch that includes the affected time span. In order to do that:
Enable USB debugging on the watch (under settings->Gear Info)
Download and install Tizen SDK.
Connect your watch to the computer using its charging cradle.
Open the command line (cmd.exe), change to the folder where the SDK files are installed (the default is c:\tizen-sdk\tools) and then run the following command:
Code:
sdb pull /var/log/dlog_main
This will pull the log file to the same folder. Then send it to me via PM (ZIP first!), so I could have a look.

The APK file is installed on the phone. It is strongly advised to clear goproviders data before installing it.
I just made a new version of this APK corresponding to the new version of Gear Manager (2.1.14052101), it's attached to this post.

Clearing data is usually available under "Settings->Apps" and then find the app (goproviders) and find "Clear Data" buton.
In terms of installing, you need to enable installation from untrusted sources first of all. Then, you can use any file manager software (e.g. "Root Explorer" or "Super Manager"), when you tap on an APK file, it will ask if you want to install it.

Actually, I think I faced it before. Gear Manager apparently checks if all of its components are installed and sometimes silently reinstalls them again.
Please, uninstall goproviders and install the alternative APK quickly afterwards.
I use Super Manager, one advantage of it is that you can see if the app is already installed (it show uninstall option when you tap on the APK in such case). I saw once, when I uninstalled the original app and then tried installing the new APK, it failed, but then, after tapping on it again, Super Manager showed that it was already installed. What I think happened was Gear Manager silently reinstalled the original app while I was trying to install the new one. Uninstalling (from Super Manager) and quickly installing again fixed it.

I tried that with Root Uninstaller, it definitely silently installs it. Faster then I could install it. And apparently disabling Root in SU uninstalled it, because now I can't re-enable it. As long as I'm not rooted, I shouldn't have an issue right?

No idea mate. Just make sure you've got the right "goproviders" installed at the end of the process. The final APK will reside under /data/app and will be named "com.samsung.accessory.goproviders-N.apk" (where N is a number like 1, 2 etc.). Just grab it (e.g. by "adb pull") and do binary comparison with the file you installed ("diff" on Andoid/Linux or "fc /b" on Windows).
