One week and volume button just broke. - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well, I've owned my transformer and the volume button just broke. It I push Vol. down it just keeps going down even if I push it once. Sometimes it even acts as if I'm pushing the Vol. Down button for some time. Other time it will go down one level and back one level.
Kinda of pissed at how fragile the buttons where.
I may go to Best Buy and try to exchange it tomorrow. Not sure what to do yet.
Anyone else experience this yet?

Go back to Best buy and do an exchange ASAP. Exactly the same thing happened to my power button but i had to RMA it because my one month warranty had expired by 4 days . You're lucky that yours is only one week old in that sense so i would suggest do an exchange pronto.

Checked the dates today was actually day 13! I promptly took it back and got a mew one. Just installed Audio Manager and plan to avoid using the volume buttons.
I'm glad it happened just before my 14 day return policy ended, but it has shaken my confidence a bit. Man I hope the power button doesn't break!
I thought about Getting a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, but the lack of a MicroSD card is just a deal breaker for me. $100 more and no MicroSD card, some on Samsung.

Glad you got the exchange. To be honest I'm still scared to press the power button too many times. Even after the repair it feels little flat but oh well I still love this tablet.

Yeah, Me too. I have installed Audio Manager for quick access to the volume controls with out having to use the physical buttons.
The power button I have no choice but to use, and I'm a bit fearful now. If that breaks, that would be a hassle!

+1, I also always feel that the power button will stuck someday

I have my TF for quite a while now and I dont have any of this, mabay a glitch in later builds of the tablet?

Nope. I have an early one and the power button is half way gone..you need to push it 4 or 5 times to make it work. It's just a really bad design/cheap build.

Is there a software button to shutdown and reboot the TF. Anything to avoid using the physical bottoms as much as possible?

I'll be exchanging my TF for another at best buy after my display developed a black line all the way across the entire screen. Its near the bottom and most visible on white backgrounds. Its visible at all times. Just seems like a bad display. I've had my TF for about 3 weeks. Interesting how it showed up now...

Do a search for shutdown in the market.
Quick Shutdown (app)
and
Reboot (widget) working fine on my TF (gotta have root for both)

Thanks but don't I have to be rooted for this to work?
After my exchange I got a B7 device, so no rooting for me.

HELP!!! Power Button Not Working!!!!

The power button suddenly quit working today. I left it in my grandparents car while we were in church (boring) and after church, I tried to turn it on, but the power button didn't do anything! So when we got home, I plugged it in, then the screen came on as if nothing was wrong. I tried pressing the power button, but nothing happened. Is there any way to reboot it without the power button (and no I am not rooted, I'm keeping my tablet stock, unlike my DInc )? Do you think it's a hardware (button) problem or a software problem? The button clicks when you press it just as it always has, so I don't know what the problem is
Thanks in advance
Sounds like black screen of death. Nothing serious, just hold power button for 10 seconds, then start it again and it should be fine.
Otherwise root and flash netformer 1.4r2, which may or may not fix the issue.
I already tried that. Lol. The power button itself isn't responding to anything
I had same problem yester day in school. I put my transformer on the desk and nothing else. When I wanted to turn it on nothing happens. In house i put the power cable to it and it worked, but power button isn't working...
You can probably find a widget or three that will allow you to reboot.
DO you have ADB setup? You can ADB reboot.
RMA time?
Mine had the same problem shortly after I purchased during the summer. I ended up having to send it in to be repaired under warrenty. According to the repair sheet they replaced a daughter board.

No one can help you except Asus. Sounds like you need an RMA.
I had a similar problem with my volume button exactly two weeks after getting my Transformer. I promptly returned it to Best Buy and exchanged it for a new one. Luckily I was still within my return/exchange period (by the skin of my teeth).
I now try to avoid using the hardware buttons as much as possible. I use the audio manager app to control the volume and plug the device in to turn it on (I try to use the power button as little as possible). I'm not rooted so I have to use the button to turn of my device.
Those buttons always felt a bit flimsy to me and I see it as the biggest build quality issue with the Transformer.

You don't need Root to have a screen button to turn off your TF.
All you need is the free app 'Screen Off and Lock'
It's an excellent App with a lot of amusing tools for switching the screen off.
I have it installed on my non-rooted Samsung Galaxy SII. The Market says it is compatible with the TF.

Yeah I I'm trying it out. I clicked on your thanks button.
I'll eventually root my TF and try out an app that will allow me to shut down my TF without using the hardware button. My TF is a B7O but I think it an early rootable version.

Good luck with the root and many thanks for the Thank You. Each vote comes in handy when my surgical team check my votes at the end of each week.
My wallet then goes into hiding.
You should find one back to you.
Just letting you know that my power button died while the unit was still quite new. I ended up having to send it back for repairs to the dreaded Texas center (at my cost I may add) but they got it back in about a week and it seems to work, at least for the time being. Between that and having had to have my dock repaired this has been the most problematic tablet/computer I have ever owned. It is actually a pretty nice unit in many ways, but build quality seems to be pretty abysmal. What worries me is that if it has so many problems when it is new, what will it be like when it has a bit of age on it? This has also prevented me from rooting it until the warranty is over, since if something like this goes wrong and you can't restore it to stock they won't fix it.
I had the same problem after I got a new cover. The power button did not do anything while in the cover, when I took it out of the new cover the power button works perfectly. The new cover has magnets for closing it. I belive the magnets were causing interference. Everything is good now.

[Q] Power button hard to press

Hi,
My transformer has the power button which is terribly hard to press.
I was hoping it would have turned softer after some usage, but 1 month after, the power button is has hard to press as the first day.
Is that normal?
I' like to avoid RMA the tablet: it is perfect ( no light bleeds...)
Thanks for your suggestions
I just found this app https://market.android.com/details?id=cz.destil.fixbrokenpb to replace power button with volume for switch on... It will limit power button usage to the strict minimum (unfortunately I cannot totally switch off or reboot with it).
It will allow waiting before rma the device, hoping asus assistance getting more expertise in operating on such devices

If it feels like it's alot of trouble then it's probably broken. - If you're within a retailers return policy then act on it ASAP.
Otherwise, do a RMA because that's not normal and app should not be required to simply ignore the matter. Cross your fingers you get a newer hardware version during the RMA process
I think you already know the answer but want someone reconfirm what you should do so I'm suggesting that you do an RMA because you shouldn't settle for less.
Thanks.
Unfortunately I'm out the 30 day policy, but I'll try asking Amazon anyway (never knows).
Otherwise I'll go for an rma.
BTW, does anyone knows how much time takes for an rma in France?

When I modded my tablet I noticed the button can *easily* get mis-aligned. It is a simple plastic cap with trim edge. If you push it at an angle (e.g. sideways) it can slip a little sideways resulting in this problem. It also has a slot in the center (behind button) to align, if yours has been bad since day 1 it might have slipped out of the slot, too.
When I re-assembled my tablet I put the side with buttons together first after carefully realigning and my buttons worked great.
I think this can be a common issue. If I was you, I would try using a pencil eraser to grip the button and slide back into position. It can be easily fixed by someone with skills & tools to disassemble and reassemble the tablet.
Whatever choices you make.... good luck

My power button has a strange behavior: whem i push it, i clearly hear the click (not as loud as the volume one, but button here is smaller and finger is all over the button), but nothing happens.
Tablet is covered by warranty, so i'll avoid opening it: let me try the chance with Amazon, then the standard procedure with Asus.
It's just a pity: no light bleeds, no speaker problem, mic working, display perfect, just fixed the flash perfs...
I do hope rma will not break anything.
This is why I love Amazon
I wrote to Amazon this morning and... SURPRISE!
They replied they apologize for my problem, and an order is underway for a new tablet with shipping for tomorrow morning
Then I've the postage paid for returning the defective unit within 30 days...
This is why I buy almost everything from Amazon
Great service!
Yes, I also had the power button stop working. And, to make matters even better, I got into CWM (or CMW or whatever) to tried to put stock OS back on and got STUCK there. No power buttton, no ability in CWM to go to Backup menu to reflash stock, and no ability to reboot from the main menu!
The power button is cheap, cheap, cheap; you may have trouble getting it fixed if you've rooted (because rooting kills the warranty) and can't reflash stock.
Very disappointed with ASUS on this issue.

Sticky Power Button

Just got my white 32gb and out of the box it has a very sticky power button. Sticks all the way down almost every time I push it so the power menu comes up. Anybody else have something like this happen?

I'm having this happen actually. Did you find a way to pop the back off and fix it, or did you send it back?
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus+5+Teardown/19016 If you follow part of this guide then you can see how to carefully remove the back cover and then inspect why the power button is sticking.

Actually after about a week of usage, it worked itself out and was fine. Haven't had a problem since, so I'd say just give it time and see if the problem resolves itself like mine.
Not sure if you've made the choice to unlock/root yet, but if you have, I'd highly suggest installing a kernel w/ sweep or tap to wake features. Additionally, it's (in my opinion, of course) a good habit to utilize a widget or toggle that will turn your screen off w/ a tap as well.
Obviously, if you determine you've got a manufacturer defect w/ the power button, by all means replace it. But the less dependent you are on the hard buttons, the less wear & tear on them. More often than not, these buttons are the first to go the longer you have your phone.

Mine seems to have sorted itself out too. The button doesn't seem to have that satisfying click my Nexus 4 did.
Glad your power button got sorted out. Being a new phone, I would probably send it back, rather than crack it open, but that's me.
On another note... Personally, I haven't touched my power button in a long time. I use "Gravity Screen," which shuts my phone off when I put my N5 in my pocket and turns it on when I pull it out, It also senses the micro-movements of my hands when I'm using it, and prevents the screen from timing out, If I set it down on a table, and it shuts off (due to timeout), I only have to wave my hand over it to turn it back on.
This app literally changed the way I use my phone, which is why I sprung for the $2 (ish) pro version, rather than the free one I linked. I highly recommend checking it out.
I RMA'd my 32GB White because of this as well as a vibration issue.
Sent from my Nexus 5
After 3 RMAs (= 4 different N5s) I stuck with the last phone and fixed the (loose) power button myself because I was fed up with the quality.
It is really no problem opening a phone, especially if you have done it with a PC before.

Power button problem?

Just bought Z5 dual in green.
Still brand new, 1 hour old.
A moment ago, power button got a bit sticky and would not pop back up.
Therefore could not turn screen on.
It has gone away since, only happened once.
But I am fairly sure that after this episode, power button started to make a tacky clicking sound every time I press the button.
QUESTION
does your z5 make this sound, and it's just that I failed to notice it from the beginning? Is this normal?
Was the power button getting stuck once a fluke, and won't happen again? Or could it be manufacturing defect?
Bit of a hassle to go back to the shop for exchange, and wanted to know if this sound is normal amongst other users or not.
Thanks for your replies in advance!
Any comment or opinion is greatly appreciated!
My power button clicks every time I use it which isn't often since I have tap to wake and the fingerprint sensor set up. Never got stuck though.

Just wanted to check, that my button clicks in sensation when pressed, as well as making the clicking sound at the same time.
Hard to describe, but I would say it sounds similar to a pc mouse clicking sound.
If I was blindfolded and someone wss clicking my power button, I could have thought that someone was using a pc mouse
Yours sounds like this too?
Yeah, it clicks at a slightly higher pitch to the volume key click.

Yes, mine sounds exactly like that.
Got the same issue, it's like the power button is sliding down, and you have to push it up to make it clickable again.
Thanks for your input guys.
I went back to sony centre where I got it from, and checked other Z5's
Since they all made similar clicking sounds, I decided to wait and see how it goes.
If I get the sticky power button again, I will return it.
Other than that, it is running beautifully!
It runs cooler than my Z3 too!
I got this thing too and i dont know if take it back to support... I started to noticed it up when i disabled fingertip sensor to unlock it just to check some stuff.
So maybe its my paranoia lol

Since the initial problem, it had not happened or repeated again, so I can say that it has worn in nicely.

In the clicking sound
The Power button is clicky. It is not a fault!
The clicking sound is normal but even mine got stuck once, had to press it a few times to get it to come back up. Yours certainly wasn't an isolated incident.
I have been in a shop checking a new one and the button doesnt need to press so much like mine one. The girl has said me that if i send it to support they wont do anything to the phone because it does work well. Its just a little diference touch...
I will send it to support in december that i wil get a phone from a friend so i can use it while the checking thing
I have a gold Z5 (I know!)
They power button slipped downwards under the casing as I used it. EE were actually really helpful for once and replaced it as I'd only had it 4 weeks. Unfortunately the replacement phone has the same issue. It doesn't affect the function of the button at all, I just worry that it will slide down too far into the body and not come up again.
I don't think EE will replace it again as the guy was very nice and tried a few different ways to log the problem until it was accepted for replacement. It seems to be a problem for a few people, but as long as it keeps working I'm not too fussed! Just thought I'd mention it so anyone else with the same issue doesn't feel alone ?
I am having the same problem, Z5 gold rev2, got the phone on 5th february, wich is now 11 days old, power button gets stuck sometimes, thanks God I have double tap to wake, wich makes things less painful, but I am afraid that this could get worse by the time. Otherwise this phone is such a beatuy! works very well, but this with power button ruins good experience that I have with this device.

I am the OP.
My phone has not become worse. Everything the same, and is working all ok.
From my experience, pushing down on the button AND sliding the power button down towards the bottom of the phone at the same time makes it get stuck in that position. So as long as you avoid the sliding down bit, I never encountered a repeat of the problem.
If it does happen, and I have yet to hear of a power button on z5 that got permanently stuck, all you do is slide it up while depressing the power button.
Everything is still water resisting and perfect.
To add, I've been using it naked, and it is surprisingly scratch-free!

Power Button Sticking

I'm having issues with my power button sticking on my Pixel. Has anyone else seen this?
I don't have a direct response to your problem just an opinion. Seeing as how clicky this power button is, as in how hard it is to depress, that leads me to believe it would be hard to get this thing stuck. I would recommend returning it.
I think every phone is a little different my power button rattles it's loose. I would also recommend replacing it, of the power button is sticking it may get to a point where the phone will keep rebooting it's self until you pry that button loose.

Lol don't worry about that all google phones are unlockable. Even if they have the newest firmware so no need to worry.
I've been having quality issues with the power button on my XL. It doesn't really stick, but it felt really mushy most of the times I'd press it in the past 2 weeks making it really hard to double tap for the camera. At some point this weekend, the button has changed its response... it now clicks every time as it should, but sometimes there is a slight click before I even depress the button, resulting in a slight click followed by the actual click when the button is activated. Really annoying... hoping it fixes itself. I don't want to RMA and risk getting a refurb.

Unless you got the new Pixel from Verizon, you will be able to unlock it. I had the sticking power button issue with my old Nexus 5, what I tried was to use a small magnet to kind of 'pull' the power button out. It might work, but it might damage the phone either, so I would recommend to get the device replaced. I'm not sure if you still retain warranty after unlocking the bootloader (I was told otherwise by Google support, but Google India support is usually complete garbage). It worked on Nexus devices so it should work with the Pixel.

I am having similar problems to the point that I had to download a power button app to mitigate the turn off the screen, as sometimes it was impossible to operate the button normally, it won't clic and sometimes it will. Another thing worth mentioning is that the phone works much better almost perfect with the original Pixel Fabric Case (which I hate) and the problems increase with the buttons exposed when using it naked or with a slim case.

Maybe... Don't soak it, but try dabbing the power button crevices with a cotton swab and ethanol. Let it dry.... Worth trying before an RMA at least.

I'm having the same issue. Every now and then when I push the power button the power off options come up. Sometimes the phone reboots but gets hung and wont finish booting until I tap the power button a few times to get it unstuck. My sales rep from work told me Verizon should warranty an exchange so im returning it for another phone.
