help a noob - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Need some advice please guys
I have a samsung omnia 7, that is chevron unlocked. I would like to install mango OS on it. I currently have os version 7.0.7004. I have already followed the instructions on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1152422 and have copied over the relevant files (.xml) and I have also got mango ready to install.
COuld somebody help me out?
Thanks

First things first. I would suggest using zune to update to 7392. Make sure you update to that first and still are unlocked. Once you have done that there is a wealth of information in this thread on how to proceed from there.
The main thing you need to remember is in that zip file there is a xap called -Unlock_Mango_XBMODDeployer.xap deploying this file and copying over the file it creates to your Windows directory on the phone is CRUCIAL to keeping the phone unlocked throughout the procedure. Basically it makes a file called CustClear.provxml and this file is located in My Documents\My Ringtones\ on the phone after you run that xap. Be sure to install TouchXplorer.xap on your phone and just use that to copy that file to your windows directory.
And AFTER you have run the update do the provision of that file. On samsung devices I am not sure how you do that but search through this forum and I am sure you will figure it out.
Good luck

Thanks for the reply man!
I was really starting to doubt this commnity.
Can i use any version of zune to update and how do i keep the unlock?
Will zune just update to the NODO one alone and not bypass that and update to the latest firmware?

Okay, so i have updated to the latest build of mango and i have lost my unlock. I followed the instructions to the letter and no joy. Can i get it back?

Remember that custclear file? You have to re-provision the phone to unlock. Hard to copy links via phone but in the developer section there is a walk through on how to do that on a Samsung. It works with the diagnosis code to do it
Sent from my HTC Surround, filled with Mango deliciousness.
Here is that link to how do re-unlock it with a samsung.

How to downgrade with official desktop updater!?

Hey,
I tried to pot my Treo back to WM6 from Vodafone with the original updater, but it keeps telling me that my device is not supported because of language issues (Right now there is WM6.1 working on it in english and I need to flash the German WM6). when I open the installer with WINRAR I can see a couple of *.nbh files (cheeimg.nbh and cheeimg_fw.nbh). Is it eventually possible to just take one of them and flash it? or do they anyway require to have a preinstalled stock ROM to update with them? And why are there so many other files in, when i usually actually just need one nbh file as a rom?
Thanks for helping me understand my phone
bump
i d like to know that aswell. did you fixed the issue by now?
If you want to use the official updater you need to modify the payloads.xml file.
You can find it by opening the official updater, but don't start the upgrade. Opening the updater will extract a bunch of files to your TEMP folder. The payloads.xml file will be in one of the subfolders. The folder is called something random so you'll have to seach for it, but you'll see a bunch of Palm icons in it so you'll know you're there.
You can edit the payloads.xml file with any text editor. Notepad works fine.
If you are changing carriers as part of the update, you will probably need to change the carrier code to the one matching the currently installed ROM. This is AT&T, for example.
Code:
<carrier_codes>CNG,ATT</carrier_codes>
I think Vodofone is VF, but you'll have to do some searching to confirm that.
Then you need to change the revision range to allow the downgrade.
Code:
<revision_range>
<low>1.13</low>
<high>3.00</high>
</revision_range>
Save it when you are done, and then start the updater. It should work. If not, there are plenty of posts here about downgrading ROM's, so search around until you find something that works for you.
And yes, you can extract the ROM's from a desktop updater and flash using the SD card method, assuming of course you have successfully HardSPL'd your phone. You need the CHEEIMG_FW.nbh file, but must rename it to CHEEIMG.nbh before putting it on the SD card.
You don't need to Hard-SPL in order to flash official Palm WM ROMs from a MiniSD.

[Q] Better guidelines for flashing vox

im a noob so theres no way ill manage to flash a vox phone by just reading wiki so help me out here pls.
1.i understand that i need to cid unlock my phone. but first of all i have to connect the activesync. activesync comes in varity or can i just download one from any site, do i need drivers for the phone?.
2.then i need an ApplicationUnlock.exe-file from a folder. OK so i run the exe file from my computer or do i send to the phone trough activesync and then run from there. do i have to put the folder with the exe file in the phone och the file is just enough. where in the phone should i put the folder or file.
3. what will the screen show so i know im doing the right thing here.
4. after that i should have a VOX_USPL folder with a spl_116_jockyw.bat file that i need to execute. so what do i do with this folder where do i put it, i mean should i execute it from my computer or phone?
5.so if i make to this point i should ok right? btw any reboots along the way i should be aware of? am i forgetting something more steps maybe?
6.so then i need a cooked rom right? like a folder with a bunch o files right? one of this files should be a flash.exe-file. so do i execute it from the folder in my computer while the phone is conected via activesync or do i put folder in somewhere in the phone and execute it from there. what do i do with the other files in the folder?
all this questions makes me confused about if i should or not. i just want to update the phone to 6.1 or higher, is there any official rom update that will go smoother?
The sequence of actions is a little different than you stated.
You need to application unlock the device as it is to allow subsequent actions to succeed.
You must temporarily (or permanently aka "Hard-SPL") put a bootloader on the device that ignores the CID lock. The device is NOT CID unlocked afterwards, but the "ignorant" SPL allows you to flash a cooked ROM nevertheless
Once the above is understood, reading the WIKI should give you the rest of procedures.
hi thanks so much for clearing that out, i think i kind of understand the purpose.
but as you see the wiki left me with so many specific questions regarding to all the necessery steps. if anyone can make or point me to a guide for dummies like me without skipping things that leaves me with questions like the above i would be most greatfull

THIS I HAVE NOTICED TOO
I tried to install a game my friend was developing on 3 devices and no dice. I thought it was a registry setting but evidently no.
Is there a registry edit to regulate app size?
yes, same problems , anyone know how to fix that , please share the trick
I didn't notice this. I'm going to check when I get home.
Sent using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
yeah i noticed it too
for these big xaps, i just install them with a smaller size and then install the big files with touchxperience or another phone->file-manager

could you explain your process a lil bit more? dont really get it ^^;
ok
First I extract the .xap into a folder. Next thing is to open the xap and remove the large files and look which guid the app has in the manifest.xml .
Install .xap . Now we use TouchXperience or Advanced Eplorer to copy the files into Applications/Data/guid/* and voila. extra-big-xap is installed
Holy Smoke °_°!
Thanks for the hint, gonna try that one out~
Man... this question was asked by me before already ... i guess i wasnt specific enough on my title ><
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1020532
and i also checked the folder structure...
it seems the file was deployed to Application/install/GUID/Install
well thats where i found the deployed files
AND IM HAPPY TO SAY IT TOTALLY WORKS!! YAYYYY THANKS FOR DISCOVERING THIS METHOD!!!
Hm didnt work for me ^^;
May I ask for a step by step guide?
File transfer is extremely slow, i'm getting old transfering 200MB apps....
If the game only has 1 big file, you can use the usb trick for windows, your files will be then in my document / zune /content / ...
I cause that problem too, but when I tried installed 2 files (with small file size) in same times that working
but i fail the method delete big file in xap and installed
by the way I don't found XDA app for WP7. I search for a week and my eye nearly blind thanks
yay... I success install big xap to my phone. method delete big file is working but copy file to phone is need to wait for age
There is a MUCH easier method. Simpy deploy using Homebrew Marketplace found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016766
Just deployed some xtra large XAP's with it on NoDo and everything went fine

Thanks, i'll reupdate to NoDo and try it out
EDIT: not working
On what OS did you try? did you use the MS dev tools or ConMan libs?
I used Dev Tools with this program. I deployed Guitar Hero 5 (212 MB) as a test and it worked. The Harvest also gave me no problems.
Edit: Now I tried it again and got a timeout error. Then I launched Windows Phone Device Manager 1.2 and deployed again with Homebrew Marketplace and in worked. Weird
Edit 2: My desktop OS is Windows 7.
This method is if everything fails (quite tedious).... it worked for me every time so far
You need:
- Unlocked phone
- TouchXperience (Windows Phone Device manager) or advanced explorer (So that you can transfer files from PC to Phone)
1. Make a copy of the .xap file (just in case u screw it up)
2. Open the .xap file with winrar
3. Extract everything into a New folder
3. Find the file "WMAppManifest.xml" - open it and check the "productID", record this number down
3. By using winrar, delete files inside the .xap file until you have around 20mb left of the .xap file (Make note of what you deleted it, i usually just delete the content folder)
4. Deploy the modified .xap file
5. Now by using Touchexperience, transfer the files u deleted into the following destination in ur phone: (Just in case u forget, you have already extracted all the files previously, so find the deleted files from there)
Applications\Install\"Product ID"\Install
(make sure the folder structures remain the same as it was in the .xap file)
6. And you are done
I hope i was clear with this!!~~

Visit my initial thread for Samsung provxml under Mango:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1226030
That would have been perfect if the program you built worked. Thank you very much but I am going to have to seek another solution. Every time I try to use the IsoStoreSpy, the software crashes.
UPDATE
@contable and when I try your method, the application deployment program tells me the XAP is invalid.

My .xap file is working well on chevron unlocked devices, so it should also work on developer unlocked devices.
I can deploy the file with the official deployment tool or WPV xap deployer 1.5.
When I unzip the XAP and change any of the XML files is when it decides the XAP file is invalid. I can upload the original file.

I have changed the xml files inside the xap 1000 times.
Did you change the file extension from .xap to .zip before unzipping ?
Here are the steps
1. Unzip files after renaming extension to .zip
2. Update XML
3. Rezip files with 7zip
4. Rename file extension to .xap

I use Winrar not 7zip...
Sent from my OMNIA7 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
same result using winrar compression
is there another way to deploy apps?
Anyone have any suggestions?
Are you on Mango or NoDo? If Mango you have to do some reg edits when you get to Mango or you can't side load unsigned apps (I think; I could be wrong).
I was trying to be able to do what is described in my first post of this thread. Those tweaks can be applied and carried into Mango, I am currently on NoDo. About to give up though

XAP deletion when installing via browser

The title kind of tells what Im thinking of here. Are the XAP's deleted automatically from taking space, and if not, where they are and whats the best way to delete them?
I believe, though I'm not sure, that the temp folder used for downloaded files is cleaned out regularly. The temp folder used by the installer is definitely wiped after installation succeeds.
Ok good and thanks for your reply. I started to think about this because I had a download interrupted and when I downloaded the XAP again, it was labelled name.xap[1]. Meaning of course that the previous unfinished file was still there at that point.
