Need help chosing a new phone? - General Questions and Answers

First some history. Im currently using a Desire HD and switching from sense to CM7 back in forth once in a while so custom ROMs are a must.
Previous to that had a nexus one.
My main requists are the following
Flashable ROMs
good battery life
Good overall performance
Good reception and call qaulity
Good speaker
Screen at lease 4"
Must take MicroSD (I have a 32gig and I spent 100$ to get it so I want to use it)
Im looking to get a new phone and im pretty much down to the following 4 choices which are currently available to me in Canada
LG Optimus 2X
LG Optimus 3D
HTC EVO 3D
Samsung Galaxy S Infuse 4G
Samsung Galaxy S II 4G
HTC Sensation 4G
MOTOROLA ATRIX 4G
MOTOROLA XT860 4G
Now in terms of price they are all give or take about the same. Specs wise the atrix still looks like a good buy especially now that bootloader is unlocked. 1 gig of ram 16gig internal plus external etc but from what I hear the screen isnt one of the best out there and due to the higher pixel count speed on the CPU takes a hit.Battery is huge which is a big plus
In general I think the 3D thing is just a gimmick so that's no big deal for me as long as the 5megapixel is semi decent
I could care less about full keyboards as im used to screen ones now
In general I tend to avoid LG due to past issues but the optimus 2 has some good reviews out there.
As for Samsung ive known a few people who say changing roms is harder then lets say on HTC devices.
So any opinion would be appreciated.
So in order here are my priorities with these
Reception
Voice quality
Battery life
Ease of rom installation and support
Good speaker
Good overall CPU performance
Screen size
Good cam 5MP and up
Dont care if its HSPA+ or whatever. Never get above 3Mbps on my network anyways

But the battery is pretty small for a device with qHD and 4.3 screen also in my general experience Sense looks night but takes allot of potential out of the CPU compared to CM7 or base android.
Also it has less internal storage and RAM then some of the other devices as well

But AFAIK,battery backup is wayy better in sensation compared to sgs 2 although both r dual core...!
N btw, stock roms tend to take a hell lot of ram...customs roms uses wayy less ram..
N hell yeah,memory is a bit f problem unless u root it..
N btw, nothing can touch d samoled screen f sgs2,but one has to consider other things too...

Well from the looks of xda its easy to root the GS2
as for battery I see Mugen has a 3200mah battery but would distroy the look of the phone.
http://www.mugen-power-batteries.co...ung-galaxy-s-ii-si9100-with-battery-door.html
At this point I think im leaning towards SGII seems specs are as good if not better then Atrix and battery is bigger then the Sensation

You won't regret your choices on any of the phones you listed but I would go with the: Samsung Galaxy S II 4G. I have one & it's awesome. Check out the SGSII forums to see what ROMs & other goodies you can get if you decide to get a SGSII.

Hows the battery on it? Any recommendations on ROMs? Is it easy to flash customer stuff?
I saw how to root and also I see there is CWM for it so figure it should be easy to install ROMs and kernels and stuff after.

Battery life is awesome & I've been using Cognition since it's release. It's easy peezy hence why I love it so much. I use to have a HTC Inspire & it was a pain in the beginning but easy after I made a successful gold card.

Love at first sight and then buy
Expected to come google-motorola... joked I say we go into the store and buy what you like it.

New Phone
Definitely judging by my hands on experience HTC or Motorola!

Id say the sensation 4g, in my opinion.

Thanks for all the replies

Sensation, or ATRIX+dock.

htc make amazing phones.. I bought the desire a year ago and it performs like a rock! and rocks do perform, it's known

I would suggest the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G.
The battery life is solid, it's very easy to root (check out its forum).
The camera is awesome, and the screen can't be beat.
Go for it.

Find dock is a waste of money. Leaning towards SGS2. Other then the battery on the atrix the specs beat all the others. Don't need qhd as that takes away from the cpu for nothing in my view

Any recommendations for roms?

I would go for the optimus 2x. I have a g2x and love it. GREAT screen, GREAT camera. GREAT phone. haha

I am loving my Infuse. Best phone I've ever had. It is easy to root, go back to stock, flash roms and just about evrything else. Htc seems a lot more difficult.to do all these.to begin with.
The screen is amazing, first phone I actually wanted to watch anything on(had iphone previously).
Battery life is good and there are good roms although right now they are on hold awaiting att to roll.out gb update to the phone.

Inspire vs. Atrix, considering selling my Atrix

Why would you Inspire people recommended the Inspire over the Atrix?
I'm kinda curious. I have seen the 1.8Ghz OC kernel, and Cyanogenmod 7 on the forums but haven't been able to find a video or anything. Can anyone compare this to the experience of a stock Atrix? I want to believe that a Inspire w/ CM7 @ 1.8Ghz would be scorchingly fast.
I'm sure the Atrix battery lasts nearly 2X the inspire overclocked like that, but I don't mind carrying around a 2nd battery for a phone. I always had 2 with my OG Droid
the fact that it doesn't have blurr should be the main reason. Alone the inspire is such a mod-able phone its not even funny. Performance wise from playing with a friends atrix and mine (not o.c.). Mine still ran smoother.
Its all about what the person wants. Specs or customization.
Not over clocked I get a good day day half of heavy use.
There have been a few devs who left the atrix for the inspire, the inspire has bigger dev community. As far as 1.8 goes, I don't think thats realistic for everyday performance. 1.5 is the performance sweet spot for most.
Sent from Desire HD or Inspire 4G or whatever this thing is called via premium XDA app.
I had an inspire, got rid of it BC I was a noob with android and the battery wasn't working out. Bought an atrix, and was disgusted after about a week to the point that I didn't care if the battery OJ the inspire was small - I just wanted it back. Sold my atrix, bought a new inspire and never looked back. The phone is seriously just 100 better. L
The kicker is that with certain custom roms, cm7 being the best, the battery life is equal to that of the atrix.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
yeah i bought the Galaxy S because of the "specs" Let's just say i learned my lesson on that... For me it's all about the Dev Support, and as you can see the Inspire 4G has LOTS!!!
On a side note.. I actually checked which phone was supported by CyanogenMod before purchasing..
I believe that HTC is the way Android is meant to be..

mmm....
$199 - Atrix
- 79 - Inspire4G
-------------
$129 Difference.
That's (2) weeks worth of Gasoline! That's what made up mind in a heartbeat!
Inspire vs Atrix
A stock Inspire runs very smoothly and very quickly. The Atrix is very fast because of the dual core processor, but that's pretty much it. Motoblur slows the phone down quite a bit and while it does seem to maintain it's responsiveness despite some lag, as I said it's still pretty laggy. HTC Sense isn't just an overlay on top of Froyo, it actually seems to enhance the experience of using an Android phone because everything seems to run so much smoother. Gaming on the Inspire isnt as good as it is on the Atrix because it's not dual core, but games for the most part run very smoothly (I've played quake 3 on mine with no issues). But yea, if you're just looking for speed, the Inspire is more than capable. It's already very fast underclocked, but its very fast overclocked as well.
This vid may help u decide if u should keep the Atrix or not. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmFKACFIu1s
Atrix disappoints
I work at a Best Buy and a lot of people bought the Atrix on release day at my store. I, however, wanted to wait and see, plus being a huge HTC fan the Inspire was really desirable (pun intended). So yeah I got an Inspire while one of my co-workers in the Geek Squad has an Atrix, and we go back and forth. "My resolution is higher!" he says, "My screen is more vibrant and larger" I say... Then his phone lags and doesn't scroll smoothly and I laugh. Speed test side-by-side I blow him out of the water, it really ticked him off when I connected his Atrix to my 3G hotspot and Speed tested quicker than his Atrix alone. Plus with the Atrix you have to rely on Motorola to release updates, and there is no way to put CM7 or another custom ROM (as of now due to encrypted bootloader)... Not to mention the version of 2.2 on there doesn't utilize the second core (if I am incorrect let me know). Sure he can hook it up to a TV and play around, but that isn't useful...
Get rid of the atrix. For a dual core phone that thing is a straight up embarrassment to Android. No ones kidding when they say the inspire is faster with no overclock. Doing side by side tests of inspire (stock) vs both atrixs I had, the inspire won EVERY speed test I gave it. With an overclock, its not even close.
And yes the atrix IS utilizing both cores with that version of froyo that's its shipped with, and with no possible way to ever flash a kernel, don't expect it to get much faster than it is right now
Edit- and my battery life actually isn't to bad at 1.8 surprisingly. It thought it was gonna be really bad, but it turned out to be pretty good.
Update:
Bought a brand new Inspire today!
Thanks for the input everyone!
PS. If anyone is interested in my Atrix it is for sale. $400

The Atrix is from Motorola, for the main reason. Blur is horrible and Motorola locks their phones down to where modding just isn't as plentiful as an HTC phone. On paper, the Atrix is a must-have device. But in reality, it is a buggy Motorola phone. The build quality of the Atrix seems to be excellent, though.

Its not great build quality. It does have some heft to it, but the back creaks and it is entirely plastic. The only good thing is the whole back can be replaced. The fingerprint sensors also aren't aligned or centered... they look like they were thrown in there.

I had both the inspire and the artix
my atrix experience wasn't terrible but that might have been because of the fact i was rooted running gingerblur the best rom out right now for the atrix... i enjoyed the atrix's great battery life and fingerprint scanner but the build quality wasn't good and felt cheap to me
in my opinion if your running a stock atrix with no intention of flashing a rom to it your going to get annoyed and bored of blur..
that being said sense isn't much better for me im much more a fan of stock android or miui actually is pretty good to. I would personally get rid of the atrix and try the inspire the screen is bigger and brighter in my opinion and has a lot more of rom development the atrix

QFT. I couldn't stand how badly my back cover creaked. Nothing about that phone screamed quality to me at all, software or hardware wise.
locked bootloader= no reason to buy EVER. Even with the cool dual core you can't overclock or do any cool **** w/ roms. On top of that motoblur is a piece of junk.

Buy sensation or wait for Hercules

Is sensation really good ? Does it have problems like g2x ? I have mytouch 4G now. Not sure to wait for Samsung Hercules or get HTC sensation ? What would you guys do ? Please share
Obviously asking this question in the Sensation forum is going to be biased toward the Sensation. I'd get the Sensation....but I'm not you and don't know your situation.

I have the G2x and the Sensation and while they both have tremendous potential they both have multiple issues. I would wait for Hercules as I am going to sell one of the two or both and purchase the Hercules.
buy or wait?
There will always be a newer/better phone that will be out within 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months of buying your next phone. You have to ask yourself a different question, which phone will have the features I need and will really use? If you are simply holding out for the best phone right now you will be disappointed and frustrated and not fully happy with your next purchase. I love the Sensation. I waited for months to get it and I am happy with my purchase. I have always rooted my android phones to use unavailable features on stock phones like; the wifi tethering with my laptop and tab. This is already built in and available the moment you buy it. ATT and Sprint and Verizon charge for this feature. BOOOOO! Good for T-Mo while it lasts. The phone is responsive, comes loaded with useful apps and widgets, it's sexy and fun to play with I have Netflix working on it (so do many others, I did not invent the wheel), hbo-go, and other streaming apps that work great on the sensation. The camera is decent enough for me not to carry a dedicated camera for photos and videos. For me, I use multimedia daily, and this phone meets my needs. I was buying every new phone that came out and was never satisfied. The sensation is a good buy, the hercules will be out in the next 2-3 months and by then there will be another phone with even better specs that will leave you drooling. I am sure it will be a great phone too.
I was really excited about the announcement of the Hercules and besides the GPS problem, I loved my Vibrant(wife has it now). But IMO, as nice as Sammys designs are(I don't like the design of the Sensation) they make the bezel too big.
My sensation is just as big as my Vibrant even though it has a 4.3 inch screen. I've always hated the added real estate which is why I chose the Sensation over the gx2. If the infuse is any idication of how big the Hercs going to be, I might pass on it and see what comes out next year. Besides, I love the weight of my HTC. I hated how light my Vibrant was even though that thing was literally indestructable.
First off ask yourself the question cause only you can decide ,if you like bland vanilla and super amolded screens then go with Samsung, if you like widgets and eye candy then sensation is the one ....all phones with this much horsepower have issues and I mean all ,once bootloader is unlocked on sensation you'll have the speed to go with the looks ,and if you're not interested in flashing then you still got a great device , but like mentioned earlier after the Hercules there will be something better 3 months later ,it will never end
simply put:
4.3" qHD >>>> 4.5" WVGA
So far all of the information leaked about the Hercules shows that its not using the exynos soc. Just some food for though. The waiting game does suck though because something better will come out after the Hercules. That's just the way it is.

Yep, it's rumored to be using the APQ8060, which is the same as the MSM8260 without the integrated HSPA radio. This is probably because the Hercules will have 42 Mbps HSPA+ connectivity and it will need a separate radio for this and that the Exynos SoC is already in limited quantity (some SGS II variants will have the Tegra 2).

I love the resolution on this phone. Can't go wrong with qHD, it makes the Sensation that much more beautiful.

Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
The killer feature on the Hercules is that 42mbps speed. The usb radios that are out are getting speeds that rival Verizon's LTE.
On the down side (for me) is that with a 4.5 inch screen and that Samsung bezel it is going to be a huge phone - nudging into small tablet territory. Battery life will also be tricky.
At the moment I'm not willing to trade a great svelte HTC design for a faster Sammy slab. But we'll see when it comes out.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
Given some of the deals we've seen for the Sensation... I'd definitely lean in that direction. 4.5" is pushing it for me, and the qHD is nicer than I originally thought it would be.
I hope there will be good support from the community with custom Roms.. How are the chances for that to happen?
The Sensation is like the Desire... huge Dev support
It is a great Phone and there will be as much People like in the Desire section ... so much support from the Dev´s
The Sensation is just great! I would never take a samsung instead of an HTC.... Sense is too great and the bigger Resolution is so nice! You feel it very much and movies are just wow on this phone! And the Sound! Great!
Just a Multimedia Talent..... I would not wait if i am able to use this phone! I will never miss something like this phone!
Just great! There are little mistakes but Touch Wiz ist just crap!

Although it will technically be capable of those speeds, I doubt it will come anywhere near those speeds. The sensation should be able to hit 11Mbs theoretically but the fastest i've had it download was 7.9Mbs. I'm sure the Hercules will be closer to 11Mbs speeds in real world.

They just updated half their Android line up to 2.3.4 in the past two months. They've updated the SGS2 four times and a fifth update to 2.3.4 is due out by the end of the month. There's a difference between getting updates directly from Samsung and having to be dependent on your U.S. carrier to get them out. The global Sensation's are being updated now. Let's see how long it takes T-Mobile to push the U.S. update.

It should get 20 mbps with ease if you're in an area that supports that connectivity. T-Mobile demonstrated those type of speeds using a data stick.

Which phone? SG2, HTC Sensation or HTC Evo 3d

Hi all I'm in need of a new phone. I want to stick with android and I have it down to either the Samsung Galaxy S 2, the HTC sensation or the HTC evo 3D. In order of importance I'm looking for :
1- Battery life... I need the phone to last all day through emailing, texting and phone calls with Bluetooth. I have the Samsung captivate right now and I charge it 2 or 3 times a day and have tried almost every Rom put there to try and improve battery life.
2- ability to flash roms although I think they're all pretty easy
3- built quality
4- camera quality
As far as performance I'm guessing they're all great considering they're dual core.
Input is welcome. Thanks
I would like to write HTC sensation, but if you want better life of battery you should choose SGS2
SGS2 is good, HTC not too good!

I have heard from peeps with the EVO 3D that the battery life isn't anything spectacular. On par with the EVO 4G which means it is just "OK".
Does Rogers have any kind of tryout policy like some others? I know on Sprint you have 30-40 days to try the phone and return for different one if you don't like it. This is what I would do. All good phones and there is good/bad with each.
Yes Rogers has a tryout for 30 minute talk time and I think 14 days. The evo is from Rogers so I might try that. The galaxy s2 and the sensation are from bell so I would have to unlock them which means I couldn't return them.

Seeing that you're a Samsung user now, maybe you'd like to try out HTC. But the SGS has one thing over HTC phones: a sort of internal SD card that handles data like Data2SD--without needing to root or flash anything. That, plus longer battery life should make SGS II the winner. (it pains me to say that, being an HTC fanboy)
Easy choice. I don't care about 3D on a cellphone. To me it's a gimmick. Plus Sprint does not offer their lame 4G in San Diego while TMobile offers their HSPA+. Therefore I would go with the Sensation. It averaged 6.5 Mbps down and 1.75 upload using SpeedTest. I can live with that.

^Sounds like you know nothing and just want to shoot down Sprint, which has nothing to do with the OP's question. Hmmm...
Anyways.
I love my E3D, but if you're looking for battery life I'd say SGSII. AS far as build quality goes, the Sensation and E3D have a FANTASTIC build quality, especially the Sensation. The Sensation also looks the best out of the three as well if you ask me. The dedicated camera button and high(er) quality screen on the E3D make it good as well, and also the available RAM on the E3D sets it apart. Once it gets rooted the development will wayyyy take off for the E3D too. All the phones have their benefits and downsides though, like the fact that the E3D can't do 1080p recording. The SAMOLED+ screen on the SGSII is spectacular too, but unfortunately it isn't qHD res like the Sensation and EVO 3D.
What it really comes down to is what fits your needs within a phone but they're all solid phones to me.
I've handled all three as well, so I'm not just throwing **** out there.
SGSII
Sent from the most interesting device in the world.
Having tested each phone, first the sensation for a week and then the SGS2 I would recommend the SGS2.
The sensation has a nicer ui by far. Sense 3.0 has a lot of bells and whistles that just make using it so nice. But after using the SGS2 i feel the great ui is a bit of a mask for weaker hardware. Albeit a very beautifully crafted mask that I would commend them on.
The SGS2 does have better use but for heavy usage the SGS you'll be recharging at 8pm vs the sensation at 6pm. It's not earth shatteringly different. I found out of the box the SGS2 was set up to conserve batteries more than the sensation (quicker screen timeouts, lower screen brightness, etc) however the sensation can be adjusted to narrow the gap.
In terms of screen quality the higher resolution on the sensation get's blown away by the better quality of picture on the SGS2, i constantly have people commenting on how nice my screen looks [Super AMOLED plus >>> qHD]
In the end i'd summarize it as the Sensation wins the out of the box Software contest but the SGS2 wins the hardware contest.
FWIW: You can change software but you can't replace hardware.
just my opinion/review
Thanks for all the input. Bought the Galaxy S2. Rooted, unlocked with the martket galaxy s unlocker and have been using the villain rom for the last 24hrs. Very smooth so far and absolutely no FC's or any issues. Battery life on day 1 has been pretty good after surfing, texting, some light games and 2 hours talk time over bluetooth, gmail, exchange mail etc. I have 45% left after 14hrs which is way better than previous phones.
The phone does feel very "plasticy" compared to the Galaxy S which had a nice solid feel and that metal back cover and even compared to some of the other phones I've had the last little while (X10, Desire Z, Droid2 Global, etc.), it is very light though, oh and the screen is fantastic!
SGS2 for my future. Dualcore & super amoled support 64GB.
Also very thin, I really like this phone.

G2x vs. Amaze vs. Sensation

I know this has been debated before but I am strongly considering getting rid of my G2x. I am just wondering what is the best of the 3 I listed. I know the Amaze has a 1.5 ghz dual core, the Sensation a 1.2 ghz dual core, and the G2x a 1 ghz dual core tegra 2. I know the G2x has the best graphics power (is this correct?) I just want stability and speed. Any suggestions here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Understood. But I was wondering if anyone had hands-on experience with custom ROM's etc. I know custom ROM's/kernels can completely change the speed/stability/ease of use of a phone...G2x prime example.
G2x probably has the best development community out of the 3. Amaze has the fastest CPU clock speed, but we can easily achieve that with custom kernels, and the .5GHz isn't much of a difference. Only thing you'd really want is that 1GB of RAM which isn't all that important. G2x is also the best looking out of the 3, and probably has the best display. (IPS-Display)

Thanks for reply. I wonder with the other 2 though if they experience the sleep of death aside from other G2x bugs we've seen.
I recently decided to get the Amaze, while deciding to keep the G2x as a backup phone.
Both devices are similar in terms of performance. I actually achieved higher benchmarks at 1.2 ghz on an overclocked G2x than I do on the Amaze at 1.5 ghz. However, in terms of real world use, I find the Amaze to be extremely quick and more reliable. There isn't much lag and Sense is beautiful when it's running on a capable device. Gaming performance is similar on both phones, but the G2x gets the slight edge because a lot of Gameloft's games don't seem to be supported on the Amaze yet. I also found that GTA 3 ran a little more smoothly on the G2x.
In terms of the physical design of the phone, I prefer the weight, larger screen, and overall build quality of the Amaze. The disclaimer here is that it's all very subjective. Perhaps you won't like the raised screen or the hefty weight of the device. Up to you to decide. You'd have to physically hold one to make a fair decicion. I can, however, say that if you like taking pictures, the Amaze camera is far superior. There is virtually no shutter lag, a plethora of options to play with, and pictures just come out looking far better than they do on the G2x.
The Achilles’ heel of the Amaze is its development situation. The phone can be rooted and the bootloader unlocked, but as of now, there is no S=off. Additionally, HTC has not completely opensourced everything (WiFi drivers). Therefore, the process for flashing roms is a little more complicated than it is on the G2x. Kernels on the Amaze generally are not flashed through recovery; kernels are flashed using a PC, an adb connection, and a kernel flashing tool. I don't find the process particularly difficult, but it requires more reading and understanding than flashing on the G2x does.
The developers on the Amaze are great, but there aren't that many and you're mostly restricted to Sense. Obviously I like Sense or I would not have purchased the phone, but if you hate it--stay away.
If you don't mind an inferior camera and more active development is a big deal to you, then the Sensation would probably be a good fit. Once its overclocked, it's very similar to an Amaze in real world use.

Anyway, S2 (because of development) >= Amaze > G2x > Sensation IMO

Completely agree.
Also RAM is very important. If you think it isn't your wrong. There is a reason why the Amaze can take photo's like a mad man yet the G2x is really slow at it. The RAM acts as buffer. Without it your files will just write to the sd card which is no where near as fast as RAM. If your not doing much on your phone and your running a bare bones launcher then yeah it's not needed.
There's no way in hell the G2x has the best development community... The Sensation is by far the best development phone out of the 3.
Personally? I'd chose the Sensation. Reasons are that it's a bigger 4.3'' qHD screen as opposed to the G2x's smaller 4'' HDPI screen. And the phone itself feels better than the G2x or Amaze. G2x is nice, but I like the slight curved feel of the Sensation, and the Amaze just feels like a brick. Didn't like it at all.
With the Sensation you get more choices and more ROM's/kernels. You get stable CM7's (maybe CM9 soon?), stable variety of Sense ROM's and a stable version of MIUI.
With the G2x, you get stable CM7, an iffy MIUI that's mostly stable but has it's own share of problems, and a stable LG based GB ROM; but we all know that LG based ROM sucks as LG's **** code gives it un-fixable bugs.
As for the Amaze, while it's an upgrade over the Sensation it still doesn't truly have S-OFF and development for that phone is stagnant to say the least. All you have are Sense ROM's and I don't really see that changing in the foreseeable future unless a whole bunch of devs suddenly get that phone and does something with it.
So for me it's the Sensation followed by the G2x, then the Amaze in last place out of the 3.
I love my G2x, but I'd probably rather have the Sensation as it has more RAM, a bigger and higher res screen, FAR more development and most importantly a processor in which the company actually releases the source unlike nVidia.
Good luck man.
I have the G2X Amaze and the SGS2, and i have to say that the Amaze had the best user experience.
If you're looking at development side though, the Sensation would be the one to go with at the moment. But the Amaze development is starting to pick up pretty fast.

Thanks.

qHD isn't that much of a difference, especially because the G2x has a slightly smaller screen. And you mean to tell me that every single LG-based G2x ROM is bad? Take a look at Bionix, Weapon G2x, and Ultimate G2x... Those ROMs are amazing. CM7 and MIUI are virtually bug-less, and run amazingly well. This just my opinion though.
Thanks for all the replies guy this is really tough...I think I may have narrowed out the Amaze due to lack of S-OFF and quiet dev community. Although, the S2 just got thrown into the mix haha. The S2 seems like a far superior device and I found this article regarding the graphics power of the S2:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4760/arms-mali400-mp4-is-the-fastest-smartphone-gpufor-now
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the T-Mobile Galaxy S2 uses the Adreno 220 GPU as opposed to the Mali-GPU. Still an awesome phone regardless though.

Good to know thanks...maybe I'll just stick it out with the G2x.
Just made this decision myself and I stuck with my g2x cause of this community and the overall feel of the phone. My only problem will be fixed when my extended battery gets here

Ya wait awhile til a worthy upgrade is available, IMHO either the HTC edge, galaxy s 3 or T-Mobile G3(hey they better make 1!)
1. 4-4.5 HD screen
2. 16-32gb internal storage
3. 8-12mp camera
4. 28nm krait,tegra3,or new exnyos soc
5.1-2gb ram
6.Great dev support on xda( this means waiting sometimes before you buy)
7.Can't be an LG phone lolololol ( I still love nvidia)

Yeah I've tried all of the stock based ROM's. I'm actually one of the lucky few that have never had problems with my G2x. Only problem I've had with stock ROM's is that the browser would FC once in a while, but that's just because of LG. But I've read many that have plenty of problems with stock ROM's, and devs like Lotherius says it's just LG's fault. Can't be fixed. CM7 was a godsend and literally saved this phone IMO.
4.0" IPS is nice, but I like a 4.3" with higher res better.
Anyways, I'd recommend the G2x to anyone. But since the OP is asking between the 3, I'd definitely get the Sensation since I think that phone will last the longest. Development wise that is.

Keep your g2x for now and wait till next year maybe earlier for the tmo 1st quad core phone .unless you can burn money, I can't and don't want to pay $100's .

HTC Sensation: A Good buy?

So money isn't a huge problem. My birthday is coming up next week and I can get a new phone...I want the galaxy note but i know asking for that expensive phone will cut into bigger gifts
I've seen the HTC Amaze, Samsung galaxy Blaze and the sensation on sale off and on throughout August and right now the Sensation is free on two year contract...
Is this a good buy?
i don't care about the latest and greatest with the processors and all that...I just want to know from Sensation owners
1. Is it a good buy and are you happy with your Sensation now in August 2012?
2. What is a good free texting App that allows texting through data? I heard Google voice is good but it does not allow MMS?
3. Should I hold out and see if maybe the Amaze or the Galaxy S Blaze will be back up for sales? I own a Nexus S 4g right now and I am not too fond of Samsung due to this crappy phone.
I missed the web only special for the Gs2 that was on sale for like 3 hours at midnight so I am not sure which to buy....
Any help would be nice.
Thanks
Micah!
In short, no.
The screen may be sharp but the viewing angles are bad and its colours are quite washed out. Also mine, like many other sensations, has loads of dust under the screen which makes it hard to use in sunlight.
The stock ROM that comes with the phone is full of crap and lets the sensation perform to around half its full potential - there is very good dev support however so u can flash a better rom if u so wish.
I know u said that u dont care about processors but u really should.. we are on the verge of a new processor architecture for android phones (A15) so tbh this is not a great time to buy any phone since it will be outdated in a few months time. At least go with something like snapdragon S4 though (found in htc one s) which is probably the best out atm - about equal with tegra 3. The sensation has snapdragon s3 which is now pretty outdated.
Also the stock battery is terrible in the sensation and u will probs find urself buying a 3rd party battery after a few months.
In my opinion go with an HTC One S... similar form factor but loads better. If u wanna spend less look at the galaxy s2.
Good texting app over data is whatsapp (u must of heard of it) its free on all smartphones.

Thank you for the feedback!
Yeah the ONE S is Free On contract as well(with a 50 buck rebate)....I am so mad I missed the sell for the Samsung Galaxy S2 on Contract!
So you recommend the ONE S? Would the Amaze be a better fit than the Sensation or are they on par with one another? I heard the Amaze has a beautiful camera
Same question
I haven't any dust or battery problem...
But it true that the stock ROM isn't very good...

IS this the same phone that when you press home button it will always go back to the white HTC screen?
Don't get one s(I have it..in short it sucks.) Don't get HTC. Get the Samsung galaxy 3. You won't regret it.
do you absolutely NEED a new phone? or can you hold out a bit longer?
reason being, HTC One X+ is coming to T-Mobile this fall/winter and its a beast
http://www.tmonews.com/2012/08/htc-onex-is-codenamed-the-htc-endeavor-2-says-stuff-magazine/
I love the Sensation, only problem I have with it is the speaker quality and the antennas are built into the back case. Also if you want faster download/upload speeds, the Sensation is capped at 14.4 Mbps while most other phones now are 42 Mbps
Here's my 2 cents.. I think, if you don't have much of a choice and you aren't able to get the one s. you should just go for it.. Buy the sensation, root it, get a good ROM. This phone, although it is 1 year + old already.. Is still pretty awesome.. If you love playing games, you need not worry as most if not all games on the play store works absolutely fine on the sensation.. Watching videos are awesome and very much clear. But the only downside to the sensation is as fredcorp above have said.. The battery is horrible.. Thus, it is likely you would need to spend an extra 30 dollars for new Anker battery..Thats about all you need. I used to own a SGSII but sold it to get my sensation. Not regretting.. Again this is only my opinion. To me, build quality matters.. The sensation has got it. In terms of community (development) people are alot more willingly to help on the sensation threads and there are a ****load of ROMs, MODs for you to try out. cheers~ do update us on what you got. Enjoy.
Get the sensation for now, then upgrade later. I've had no issues and enjoy my S4G!
No, I have one and it is a battle against lag. Get the S2, it is butter smooth with the Exynos processor. I love sense 4 and will get another HTC phone in the future for it. I recommend the international One X.

What is great about the Sensation is the Dev support. If you like running different roms the Sensation is the way to go. You can choose Sense 4, Sense 3.6, ASOP, AOKP, etc. it never gets old.

In all my electronic devices, the Sensation is the only one who performs better today then the day I bought it. Yep! It gets better every week. Loud speaker is very weak, but other then that I enjoy my phone and it is performing so well that I don't feel the need to update my device yet. I have 2 Sensations and 1 Amaze and I really prefer the Sensation in the end.
Development thread is huge and support is stellar.
The 2 years contract is certainly the turnoff of your deal, otherwise you will enjoy the phone.
Development : sensation

Battery&camera
Sent From My Sexy Sensation.
I've owned The Amaze, Sensation and the S2.
The amaze is fast when it's on stock and yes, the camera is amazing. If you don't mind having sense 3.6 and somewhat crappy battery life then go for the amaze
The s2 is also a great phone but the screen resolution is pure crap ! Yeah it has beautiful saturated colors but Everything is just so huge and pixelated And the screen does get scratches a lot easier than the sensation and the amaze . It does lag a lot with the new OTA ICS update. Although, rooting it makes it a great phone to own u can change the screen density so things won't be as huge and it does have a great development thread lots of great roms to flash. It also has a big battery. So it is a great phone, only if you root it and load a custom rom.
As for the sensation it is my DailyDriver. It has a Beautiful QHD screen that i love sure it's not no super amoled plus but it has better resolution wich is a + for me. The stock rom is ok. It does lagg here and there. But the development on this phone is great ! Lots of roms to flash. It shouldn't be long for us to get a stable jellybean rom. Battery life does kind of suck though.
Thats just my personal experience from owning these phones.
I would get the One S though, it's a amoled display with a qhd resolution wich looks great ! And it has a very very fast processor. Rooting it and loading a custom rom should make it a even better phone to own !
