[Q] I feel so lost...trying to install a custom ROM - T-Mobile Sidekick 4G

I've been trying to install a custom ROM for the past 3 days and every time I try I wind up with the same phone and a giant headache.
I did take the plunge and have rooted my phone, but I'd like to really get rid of the lagging and force close issues that have rendered my phone darn near unusable, since I've updated my phone to KG2.
I've searched for a KG2 ROM and I think I've found one, [ROM][CWM][KD1-KG2] TouchMIUIwiz v2.0 - Public Release [8/11/11], but when it comes down to installing it I'm confused by two things upfront:
To my understanding CWM is the same thing as booting into recovery using the 3 button combo, is that right? I read the Complete Noob FAQ and it seems to say so, but I'm wondering if I'm supposed to install another version...??? I dunno.
When I do try to install a custom ROM, I have to wipe the Dalvik cache from an advanced menu of some sort and I have to change the mounts...from where?? I feel slow because I don't get it, I feel like I'm missing something.
I've read through countless posts and I haven't quite found what I'm looking for, the Complete Noob FAQ has helped a great deal, but so far the only thing I've developed is a huge headache.
Anyone who can help, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

i posted this a few times and im sure it can help you
download:
http://www.krylon360.com/file_host/sk4g/recovery.zip (This is the recovery.)
http://www.krylon360.com/file_host/sk4g/update.zip (this is the update)
You need a file manager for this such as root explorer or astrid
open the first zip file (recovery file) on your computer and take out the recovery file inside it (should be the only file) and place it on the sd card.
place the second file (the update file) on the root of your sd card
and install a file manager
now open file manager scroll down and find sdcard,
now open it and find recovery and long press on it. hit copy. now hit the back button once.
now find system. open it.
find bin. open it.
hit on the top mount r/w
hit paste and overwrite the file.
next, power down the device and instead of powering on regularly, press volume down+ power button or volume up+volume down+camera+power on you should be in the recovery mode.
then hit re-install packages,
NOW YOU HAVE A CWM
Goodluck and have fun flashing.
to flash you have to download the zip file
boot into recovery using 3 button combo (volume up + volume down + power button)
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache
wipe dalvik in advanced menu
choose :install zip from sd card
choose the rom you've downloaded and out on your sd card
wipe the dalvik cache from advanced menu
reboot system
you will be at the samsung boot up screen
you will hear a girl robot voice talk for about 5 minutes then you will get a boot animation and you will be good!

Ok, I downloaded ASTRO File Manager, and I've placed the recovery file on the SD card through Mass Storage. However, for the update file, there are a bunch of folders in that zip, I've just placed the unzipped folder on the sd card, is that right??

yup thats right! dont unzip the update file

Okay, I copied the original just in case, because there was one already in there that I had to overwrite.
As for the File Manager I downloaded ASTRO but it doesn't have an option to copy the recovery file, so I'll download another, but do you know of a free option?
Thank you so much for your help so far, I really appreciate it, it seems so easy the way you've put it, so thank you.

Sorry I don't know why I asked u for another option. I've been on grapes and carrots for the past 3 days so my brain cells are kind of slow to rub together. Lol
I have found one that will work and I think I'm good from here on out, again I really appreciate you being so helpful. I'm on my way to El Pollo Loco to get some real food, thanks!

I have not tried this and I can not guarantee it will work and won't brick your phone.
You also will not be able to back up your WiMax keys this way.
If you are still determined to try...
You can try downloading this to your phone.
Download root explorer from the market(paid app) go into the SD Card folder, then the download folder. Locate the zip, then long press and select move, make sure you are in the SD card folder, but no sub folder and paste.
The reboot into bootloader by turning your phone off. Then turn back on while holding the volume down.
I haven't done it myself, but you should now be prompted to reboot after the recovery zip is flashed from the bootloader.
will try, did something simullar with 2.5 thanks brando ur the man

[Q] Any chance I could get a hand "modding" my phone.

I've been on this site a little over than an hour and a member for about 10 minutes now and i'm trying to find ways to better my devices performance, I am a little familiar with cyanogen mod and know that is is not yet available for the SGS4G and i know better than asking when it will be released. How ever I did see something called 'bionix Black Ice ROM' people i here seemed to be stoked about that. Now what exactly is that? will it help my phones performance? will it get rid of all the bloatware? next if it does help with all of that could somebody step by step walk me through the process or make a youtube vdeo showing how to install black ice step by step? i'm obviously new to all this and really don't wanna brick my phone.
thanks, GD
hi! welcome to the forums, btw! this is the best place to find out stuff about your phone. i was in your place about a month ago, so i know exactly how confused you are.
you should read this for everything referencing your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117554
to answer your questions: yes. lol. no more bloat, everything will be much faster and basically you will have the phone of your dreams.
i am no expert, but i would root the phone using superoneclickroot. then download root explorer. get krylon's final cwm. download the rom (black ice or frost or w/e you prefer), download bali 3.1, the ext4 converter, and maybe a new modem (optional). flash those following the very well written guides by the devs and you should be ok.
everyone here is pretty awesome and we're all willing to help (even me...who barely knows anything).
Ok, i've already Rooted my phone. I guess now i need to download said programs. any links on these well written descriptive how to? because all the ones i saw confused the hell out of me and id like to believe i'm not completely retarded. Thank you for the welcome BTW.
i would start with krylon final cwm. his directions are pretty straightforward. i used root explorer to move the file where it needed to be.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099374
i am assuming you downloaded the rom already from the CWM rom section in the bible. its up to you. im biased towards bionix frost, but black ice is just as amazing.
i would also dl the ext converter and bali 3.1 kernel as well. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123039) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1080871). place all of the zip files you download into the root of your sd card....which means that if you connect your phone to the computer and open it using windows explorer, it is that first window, which lists all of the folders. dont put these files in folders or anything.
once that is done, i restarted my phone in recovery shutting down fully and pressing the power+volume up+volume down. once there, i went to reinstall packages to get into cwm.
then when this loads, i wiped the system/factory reset and wiped the cache. then i went to mounts and storage and mounted my system. (the final mounting output should be: unmount, mount, mount, unmount). i then scrolled to "go back"
i choose install zip file from sd card. choose zip file, which should be the second option if my memory serves me right. scroll of ext converter and install that one. then when that is done, go back to install file from sd card, choose black ice or frost (i LOVE frost) and install that one. then when that is done, i flash my bali 3.1 uv kernel. when that is flashed, i click go back and choose reboot system. once that is done, you will see the galaxy s screen for like 5 min or so followed by the team whiskey logo. once you see this, it will take another minute or so to load up. once you see that the rom loads up...LET THE PHONE SIT FOR 10 minutes. i know it seems long, but just let it sit.
after 10 min or so, i would go into your about phone options and check and see that you have bali3.1 and that the rom is correct.
do these tweaks as well
fugu (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127069)
init.d (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1121656&highlight=init.d)
EDIT: Check out raver and dsexton's init.d and fugu tweaks. i switched from the ones above to the ones in the following thread. these guys are too legit.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1141550
you can flash a modem too (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117331) using the same process as flashing any other zip file.
remember, the first option in choosing a zip file is update.zip from krylons final cwm. do not flash this after the rom/ext/whatever. im not sure if this has been addressed (im still a noob), but everytime i did that, i bricked my phone. lol. so just to answer your question before you wonder...cause i always wondered whether i should flash that or not. lol.
hope this helps. feel free to press the thank button.

LOL! that was more of a joke. the real credit goes to people like krylon and team whiskey, drhonk, dsexton, chadster, mad, raver, etc. they really made all this possible.
let us know how it goes. you can honestly flash all of this within 5 min (not including wait times to build the cache). once you get it down, you should check out some other posts because people are always coming up with creative tweaks to make things better.

Hi, i am very new and a noob at this site and rooting in general. Hear me out. Im stuck on getting the recovery on the phone. ADB push? Root explorer? I cannot find /system/bin.. PLz walk me tru.
If you rooted your phone, download root explorer from the market. then follow the guides I listed in the post. If you read through the threads, everything has already been asked.
Root explorer is a file manager that allows you to see everything. there are other explorers, like super manager, but I like root explorer. To push a file, download it to your computer, move it to your sd card, open root explorer, find the file, long press, click move, and then navigate to the destination folder and paste.
To get into recovery to flash roms, shut the phone off, then press power and the two volume buttons at the same time. You'll get to a screen with blue text. Click reinstall packages and you'll see krylon's cwm. Follow my previous post prior to going into download mode though.

so your not using Clockworkmod Recovery then? just flashing directll to NAND?
---------- Post added at 02:16 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:59 AM ----------
Most newer roms are compatible only with Clockworkmod Recovery (aka CWM or CWR). u must install this after maglr.
Just went over to the OP for hyperdroid v 3.0.1. thats why in the file u downloaded says: Hyperdroid-CWM-v3.0.0-MAGLDR-CWM-ZIP.
*note the bolded abbreviations... means u need Clockworkmod Recovery for this rom to work... not hard just an extra step that i highly recommend
There are roms that dont require this and a few ways around it as well but its easier to just install CWM. like i mentioned before seems most (all the ones ive used in the past ten months) roms are going this route for CWMods added features and benefits
Heres a little guide i cooked up bout an hour ago in another thread to help
I just posted this in another thread to clear some things up for some guys shortly after my first reply to you....guess ya inspired me in a way, hahaha. you might be more concered with steps 5 through 6 seeing as how you already have MAGLDR installed...... hope this clears up the process for you a bit
............................excerpted from previous post........................................
********BTW i have attached a little template that i use when flashing various roms and storing them on my PC. has task29, HSPL & MAGLDR already in it. all u need to do is go to the xda hd2 master radio thread to grab your appropriate radio and put that into the empty radio file. then find the rom you want to test out and usually the developer will have both rom (obviously) and the appropriate CWM that u should use with it and just put those in their respective empty folders i have in the attached file. that way all the steps below will line up to the files i have attached
OH YEAH, FORGOT... THESE STEPS ARE TO BE DONE AFTER THE INITIAL PREREQUISITES i.e. windows mobile device center, activesync, proper spl version...blah blah blah
--------the following steps 1 - 4 are to be preformed while at the tri-color boot screen (easiest way to reach is to turn off your phone while its connected to your PC then immediately hold volume down button till you see it n wait for it to say usb in the white section).
(by the way your device will ALWAYS automatically restart itself after a couple seconds if it is shut down while plugged in via USB to either a wall/car charger or hooked up to a PC this is normal and a small hiccup either due to the use of magldr or the hspl but dont worry)...cant quite remember
1. run task 29
-double click the only icon in file if your using the one provided by doloop
-wait for it to run and do its thing. when its finished it will automatically turn off your device so be sure to hold down the volume key as soon as it does.
2. install radio
-run the "customRUU" file with the HD2 icon in the radio of your choosing
-it will operate in a similar fashion as the task 29, automatically turning off device upon completion.... down on the vol key
3. install hspl3/hspl4
-run the "HSPL3_PKG/HSPL4_PKG" file. should be the only one in there
-make sure you select 2.08.HSPL in the setup and it will execute itself just like the installers in the previous two steps n turn off your phone... down vol key
4. install magldr113
-make sure your selecting "rom update utility" in the magldr113 file. dont run the "DAF" it wont work properly if you do and youll get errors
-BUT THIS TIME AS IT TURNS ITSELF OFF HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON ON YOUR DEVICE AS IT BOOTS UP UNTIL U GET TO MAGLDR AND CONTINUE TO HOLD IT DOWN UNTIL YOU SEE ABOUT 12 DIFFERENT OPTIONS...
5. install CWM recovery
-go to option 5 "USB Flasher" and hit the green call key. wait a few moments till it shows USB....USB make sure the second usb pops up and your PC recognizes the connection. then when it does sync you get to......
-while still in the usb flasher mode above, simply run you desired CWM recovery which should the one your developer recommends for the builds as the requirements tend to vary from rom to rom.
-this is achieved by selecting the "DAF" file from the clockworkmod recovery your using
-and again this installer will shut off your device upon completion and HOLD DOWN THE POWER KEY LIKE ABOVE TILL YOUR BACK AT THE MAGLDR MAIN MENU (with options 1-12).
6. install rom
-go to option 8 "AD Recovery" and hit the green call button to enter into the CWM recovery u just installed
-after it loads up (GO!GO!GO!) go down to the "mounts and storage" option that is third from the bottom and hit the call key.
-once there go to the last option "mount USB storage" and hit the call key.
-give your PC a few moments to recognize the sd card for your device and choose to open it when your PC prompts with the regular file explorer or just find it and double click on the newly recognized drive (sdcard) if your PC doesnt auto prompt you.
-the new drive (sdcard) should be empty (depending...) then just find the desired rom you chose to use, right click on it and copy.....then over to the new drive (sdcard) and paste. might take a min or two depending on the roms size
-once the copying is complete hit the call button to "unmount" your sdcard then the back button on your device till your back at the CWM main screen
-go to the fifth option down and "install zip from sdcard" and hit the call button
-select the second option "choose zip from sdcard" and select the zip file you just copied to your sdcard. then it will begin to install the rom and all rom install times vary by build. some take a minute, some seem like they take forever.
-once installation is complete hit the back button till your back at CWM main screen and choose the last option which is to "power off"
-then tap the power button(if u unplugged it from usb otherwise it wil reboot by itself) to turn on your device and give it some time for the initial boot and load as it has to set up everything u just installed. subsequent boot wont take as long but again it can all vary from rom to rom.
-after initial load and a successful bootup you should arrive at ether the lockscreen or a startup screen. give the rom a few more mins to settle and dont hit any buttons. then unlock the device or skip through the startup options and get to the home screen. maybe give it another min to settle the launcher and the last bit of data and resist the urge to mess with the features. your gonna hate this but hold down the power button and select power off device from the popup menu. i know it sucks but it is best practice when flashing roms. after device shuts off wait a few seconds and turn it back on and let it reboot. should be faster this time and when u get to your lockscreen simply give it a few seconds to settle again, unlock and go to main launcher a wait a couple more seconds for it to finish settling and.....have fun! (every time i restart my device for any reason i will always give it a few moments to finish loading up before just blazing away with the apps)
WOW! maybe its not so abridged after all, but oh well tried my best to be as clear as possible so people can utilize their HD2 to its fullest potential.
HOPE THIS HELPS AND PLEASE HIT THE THANKS BUTTON IF IT HAS
Hello meg4lom4ni4c! you are awesome! thank you so much for helping me and it feels good to know that even though im a noob i still inspire people ahahaha
i was having problems connecting to my pc before but for some reason when i tried it again using the usb port tat the back of my pc it connected and and i put CWM and did what you said to put the zip file on CWM (mounts and storage) and copy and pasted the file and it worked! yey! now the only thing is when i go to market it always forecloses and i don't know what to do to fix it. when i go to market there would be a yellow box on top saying that "this application is not compatible with your phone" and it always forecloses. was wondering if i need task 29 and and radio if i want to change roms and to start it, would i go to the tri color screen and run task 29?
Starting HD2 ANDROID SO FRESH N SO CLEAN!

well what the task29 does is pretty much whipe your whole devices NAND (internal) memory. it wont wipe your radio or the HSPL. it takes care of wiping the rest of the space (MAGLDR and CWM).
so your options are as follows:
-try fix permissions trough CWM
-wiping davlik cache (helps clean up issues with apps n such possibly your market situation, but this could be largely due to the type of rom your using as well as none are perfect...some are really close)
or start fresh to minimize chances for errors and force closes
do this by restarting your device into CWM
-in CWM execute the following commands in the following order (this is a little overkill but better safe than sorry i suppose).
at main CWM screen
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition
then at main CWM screen go under "mounts and storage"
-format /boot
-format /cache
-format /data
-format /sdcard
-format /system
-format /sd-ext (only if u made one)
then back at main CWM go under "advance"
-wipe davlik cache
-can also find fix permissions here if needed i personally havent used this much(but maybe i should be every once n awhile...might be good practice)
at this point your ready to start at step one in my guide two posts up....run task29 at tri-color boot screen and so on and so on
*********Please note that the use of CWM is essential for most current builds that utilize a rom-zip format. not sure about sd card builds as i havent used them. i came into the hd2 flashing game right when they got it to run solely out of NAND. just seemed like a better way to do it to me but i could be wrong
hope this helps and lemme know if everything worked out for you. also include the rom you are attempting to install for further assistance. and also corrections are always welcome as i am definitely no developer just have a knack for nerdy stuff (sometimes)
Hi!

i downloaded task29 the repack by shadrac one but could not decide which radio to get..any advice? and as for the rom i really don't know what rom im gonna get because i just started flashing my phone but if you have any suggestions i would very much like to hear it the rom im using right now is "Hyperdroid-CM7-v2.1.0-HeadyHoneyBadger" and it works good except the market, it just keeps foreclosing i really like cyanogenmod but i think there is a lot of different kinds so i really don't know which one is good.

Hmmmm where to start....
You were in CWM when u copied the rom to the phone... remember? to get there turn off device then restart it while holding down the power button to get you to MAGLDR. Option 9. AD Recovery = ClockworkMod Recovery (aka CWM or CWR) in there is where u use my little wipe/fresh install guide
The version of Hyperdroid your using is from a months ago. Pongster has released v.3.0.0 "the insightful impala" with a hotfix to version 3.0.1. I would recommend using that as most of your market issues will be addressed i would imagine.
i attatched a file in my previous post... download it. it comes with the task29(provided by doloop), HSPL3, and MAGLDR113 that i use. the lil guide i posted follows how i have the files in the "HD2 rom template" arranged. if you unzip the attached file (use 7zip,winrar....etc) youll see files labeled 1-6 (1.task29 2.radio 3.HSPL 4.MAGLDR 5.CWM 6.ROM). the radio file is empty because i was unable to compress it enough to include it( there is a 8mb attachment limit ) The CWM file and rom file are blank as well because both will vary from build to build.
if u use my attachment as a kind of template it will make the steps easier to go thru thats why they are numbered
to get the appropriate radio on xda type a search for "radio master thread" and open the post. there you will see a bunch of different radios. BE CAREFUL SOME MIGHT BRICK YOUR DEVICE!!! read the post it explains which ones not to use i believe. the one i use and have noticed a lot of others use is 2.15.50.14.... has always worked for me. download it and put it in the empty radio file in my template.
now go back to Pongsters hyperdroid cm7 OP and download both the version 3.0.0 and also download the v3.0.1 hotfix and put both of the zip files in the empty rom folder.
in Pongsters second post he has the CWM for you that youll need if you already dont have it (its on step three of his little guide on his second post) download and put that in the empty CWM file in the template.
now that you have all the files you need and in a nice tidy order.... reflash time!!!!
follow my "fresh install/wipe/format procedure" in my previous post then use my install guide post afew posts up and follow it using the lil template i provided and that u put the radio,CWM,rom & hotfix into
notice how the 1-6 steps in my install guide follow the 1-6 on my "HD2 rom template" attachment?
******oh yeah when u get to the installing the rom step only install the v3.0.0 zip via CWM first and follow the recommended new rom startup section at the end of my lil guide. make sure the rom has had plenty of time to settle and everything like it says n go ahead and play around with it a little and try it out. but then after u rebooted it a couple times like it says reboot it a third time into CWM and go to the install zip from sdcard option and go in and install the hotfix(sorry i tend to repeat myself sometimes)
lemme know how it goes and have u tride Tyweens rom??? Its pretty good itself in case your not crazy about the Hyperdroids' minimalistic and monocrome look. Both are great though.....
---------- Post added at 01:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:31 PM ----------
oh yeah go to www.android.hd2roms.com for a site i use that someone made that kinda keeps track of most of the HD2 roms floating around on xda. its pretty acurate and gets updated constantly. help u see most of the flavors of android on the HD2.
YEY!
YEEEEEEEEY! IT WORKED! you are AWESOME! thank you so so so so so much! if it wasn't for your guidance i wouldn't be able to understand it! i did all the stuff you told me and it worked! i didn't have any problems while flashing my phone! did i say thank you already? THANK YOU!!!!!
and thank you for all the links that you suggested it was really helpful! thank you thank you thank you!!

[Q] Installing Hellfire Phoenix

I'm about to get a g2x very soon, and i heard that the stock rom sucks and that Hellfire Pheonix's is best. The instructions given on the op was not very beginner friendly, so i'm a bit confuse. This is going to be my first android and i would appreciate it if someone could link me to some sort of reference and tutorial for the installation of Hellfire Phoenix.
I've searched and google, but i had no luck. If you guys know if a detailed tutorial is out there, then just tell me and i'll put more effort into finding my answer. Thank you very much.
EDIT: To be more specific, what threw me off was "DO NOT use CWM to load the rom to your SD card. CWM has been known to cause file corruption when using it to transfer the zip file.". From all the tutorials that i've read and seen, they all use cwm. what are the alternatives?

What it means is don't boot into CWM and mount usb storage and copy files to sd card from there because it is known to corrupt the file and then could end up in a bad flash and it could harm ur phone.
When ur gonna copy the rom ur gonna flash to ur sd card, make sure ur booted into android first and mount usb storage from there.
Hope this helped

Correct.
Now, to fully answer your question:
Ok, adding this in after I wrote this to make things clearer: before starting make sure you:
1. Have G2x scrubber in the root of your SD card
2. Have the zip for your ROM (HFP in this case) in the root of your SD card
3. Have a copy of gapps (Google Apps) in the root of your sd card, get it here
4. After flashing CWM make a back-up (nandroid) of your stock ROM via CWM
First you need to flash Clockwork Mod (CWM) on your phone go here for that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
Also, note: NEVER use ROM manager to flash CWM.
Second grab G2x scrubber from the HFP thread.
Next boot into CWM by holding volume down and power at the same time as the phone starts up. I find it helpful to count to three (eg, one one thousand, two one thousand, etc) after the blue and white (as opposed to plain white) LG logo first appears, that way you will have your finger off the power button when CWM starts. And in case it needs to be explained: you navigate CWM via the volume keys and make selections with the power button.
So, having downloaded G2x scrubber to your phone, go to "install zip from SD card" then "choose zip from SDcard" and navigate to G2x scrubber, run it twice.
Once that is done, use the same install zip option and this time choose the HFP zip.
Next select the gapps zip and flash it.
You're all done. Reboot and enjoy.
Thanks for the helpful replies! I feel very confident about modding my g2x when i get it now!
EDIT: Do i need to root my phone if i'm going to install HFP?

No, just use NVFlasher to flash ClockWorkMod Recovery, then flash your rom. You'll be rooted when you finish.
I found good guides on TheUnlockr. There are links in the thread discussing Hellfire Sandwich (HFS). If you don't need wifi calling or the ability to take video I would recommend using HFS v1.2. It is an update to ICS (Android 4.0.x) but it is not completely stable yet.

[Q] How to flash a rom after rooting

OK I apologize ahead of time for what is probably a ridiculously easy question for most.
The ATT 1X is my first android and this is the first phone that I've rooted.
I read for hours and followed the instruction to a T. I rooted, unlocked the bootloader and installed CWM.
I can get into Recover/Boot mode or whatever you call it on phone startup, I have the Super user icon in my files, but I have no idea what to do now.
I found a ROM that I thought was worth a shot (CleanROM 2.5) but I don't know what to do. I've read and researched for hours now and everyone's problems seem to be complicated but no one talks about this.
I downloaded the ROM to my computer but I don't know what to do with the files, I can't find a .bat file or anything to initialize it and I am stuck.
I've wiped the data and done everything in the steps but I'm stuck at actually installing it. I know I'm obviously doing something wrong but I feel like I'm very close to what needs to be done.
Any help is welcome, thanks

I recommend you check QA thread found in a sub forum under your devices section and you review the stickied post for ROM install or Google "android install custom ROM " (remove quotes). Too much info on this already to type it all back out here. Did you watch you tube newb video you agreed to have watched when getting an xda account?
Essentially you now made it so your phone has the ability via CWM Recovery to now boot to that to install ROM zip or continue to use rooted stock ROM (how you flashed that zip for superuser is baasically same as how you flash a cwm compatible ROM zip (MOST but not all ROMs)) which with SuperUser can now run privelleged code if it is made to or requires it to run.

Thanks. I know this must seem so stupid, but I've been searching this forum, google, youtube and pretty much everything else for how to do this and I get it all and understand what's happening.
I just don't know where to put this ROM (which folder) to get it to install.

So after all that searching you never came across instructions informing you to put the zip on your phones storage?
You should probably just hold off a bit on flashing anything then. Not being mean but it sounds like you are confused by the process and end result. Step back and do some basic checklisting.

Download the rom you want and DO NOT UN ZIP IT. THEN PLACE THAT ZIP ON PHONE STORAGE AND BOOT INTO YOUR CUSTOM RECOVERY . HIT INSTALL FROM SD CARD AND MAKE SURE THE ROM YOU DOWNLOADED IS LISTED BUT DONT FLASH YET. GO BACK THE THE MAIN SCREEN OF RECOVERY. NOW MAKE A BACKUP. WHEN THAT IS DONE GO BACK TO MAIN RECOVERY SCREEN AND HIT WIPE PHONE DATA AND THEN CONFIRM. THEN GO AND HIT CLEAR CACHE OPTION. THEN GO BACK AND GO TO ADVANCED AND CLEAR DALVICK CACHE. NOW YOUR READY TO FLASH. GO TO INSTALL ZIP FROM SD AND FLASH YOUR ROM. FIRST BOOT ALWAYS TAKES LONG AFTER FLASHING A NEW ROM

Been posting on the internet for decades, don't worry about being mean. I'm here to learn. I rooted, unlocked the bootloader and installed CWM so that I could take advantage before the phone asked me to update the software to the 1.85 version.
My phone works fine now, and I did everything correctly which is what I was setting out to do. I'm in no rush to flash a ROM, but now that I'm ready I'm itching to try it out.

This is the process as I understand it and as stupid as it sounds, I'm hung up on where in phone storage to place the zip file of the rom. I don't see a storage folder, an SD folder, nothing that seems obvious and nothing that is in any of the things I've been reading or watching.

Plug phone into computer. When prompted, select Disk Drive. On computer, browse to your computer, open the 'disk drive', and copy the zip there. THAT is your sdcard as seen by your phone.

Seriously?
Wow I feel dumb. I was looking for a sub folder or directory specifically for storage and backup.
Thanks, I think that should be enough for me to do this tonight.

Yeah, some phones you may have to drag down notifications and tap USB mode or USB connected notification (it has standard USB icon and only appears when phone attached to computer). Then tap either USB storage mode or the button to enable USB drives. Then on computer just like a thumb drive it adds drive letter. Copy anything there that is /mnt/sdcard or /sdcard on phone. BE SURE TO EJECT DRIVES BEFORE AND TAP TO DISABLE USB ON PHONE IN THAT ORDER THEN UNPLUG FROM USB (failure to do so COULD result in data loss or corruption which you DO NOT want to happen to a ROM zip)!
Then boot in to recovery choose install zip from sdcard (not apply update from sdcard) as install from allows you to browse for any zip and install. Usually Vol up and down moves through menus and power or search button is enter. BE SURE THE ROM YOU DOWNLOAD IS SPECIFICALLY MEANT FOR YOUR DEVICE OR YOU COULD EASILY BRICK YOUR DEVICE. PLEASE REVIEW HOW TO RUN NANDROID BACKUPS AND RUN ONE BEFORE INSTALLING A DIFFERENT ROM.
I CAN NOT STRESS ENOUGH IF UNSURE DON'T PROCEED, BE SURE YOU RUN NANDROID BACKUPS AND ENSURE YOU FOLLOW INSTALL DIRECTIONS INCLUDED WITH YOUR ROM. ALSO, NEVER FORMAT EMMC (AKA INTERNAL SDCARD) IT ALMOST GUARENTEES A BRICKED DEVICE.

Is all good, and now you see why we were kinda scratching our heads wondering what was up a little . Glad we could help get you going though welcome to the world of custom ROMs. Please just be careful and always do backups and take it slow and read things 2x before even attempting once. While it can be easy to do it is also easy to accidentally brick your device (make it not work and have to be sent out for repairs).
