I was running the stock ROM AT&T sends out the Inspire 4G with, and I haven't rooted it. My phone notified me there was a new update available, so I downloaded it and installed it. It's now stuck on the white screen with the green htc logo. I tried turning it off (wouldn't work) and plugging it in (also didn't work).
What do I do? I'm supposed to be helping my sister move today, and this is the last thing I need. Please help. ):
Out of Curiosity - how long did you allow your phone to sit at the splash screen before powering down?
Edit: I see you tried to power off and didnt work. And it won't when it is 'bootlooped'
Have you pulled your battery and tried rebooting? Make sure and give it plenty of time to Install before turning off, or pulling battery rather. Lemme see what I can find out.....
I let it sit for about a half hour to 45 minutes while I got breakfast with my family.
I'll pull the battery now.
Might have to downgrade it, and try again.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I pulled the battery and now I'm in the HBOOT menu. When it restarted, the boot menu came up automatically. Do I need to do a factory reset? I really really don't want to, because I have google authentication turned on, and I won't be able to get into my email or anything else for two weeks, as my backup passcodes are about 2500 miles away right now.

Yep that's plenty of time. Give it a shot - its not going to hurt you any. Still perusing for an answer. This makes me wish I knew all I have learned when my phone wasn't rooted. I don't know what a stock Inspire can access. Out of curiosity - and this probably is NOT going to work - after you put your battery back in, hold Volume down and don't let go, and push power. Keep holding Volume down for a few good seconds after you push Power and see if it tries to boot, or goes into what we refer to as Bootloader. And you'll know - looks like old Dos from way back when. (Again this is a longshot - there is probably a few experienced users laughing at me.)

That's where we wanna go! Before a factory reset though, do you have an option that says recovery? Let's fiddle for a minute before you wipe everything....
It goes into the HBOOT menu when I hold the volume down key and power.
I tried just now clicking on recovery on the HBOOT menu, and I got the red triangle with the exclamation point screen. I'm pretty sure that's bad.
The fastboot option just brought it to the HTC logo screen again.
From Hboot - if possible go to recovery. Again, I have no clue how Stock Inspires look and operate so bear with me, and add all the details you can, specifics. If not too late, does your Hboot have a version number? ..85 or some numbers around there? I didn't think we could get into Hboot without being rooted. Anyways....
Hmmm. Does the triangle have any comment or warning? We probably are looking at a wipe or factory reset. But first - do you have the means to go to your Google account and change your settings so that you can avoid the wait authentication deal?
Also : just the other day I did a factory reset on my rooted Inspire from the Hboot menu, and it took me to recovery. So that may be our means of getting into recovery there. I am rooted mind you.
Recovery gives me the red triangle with the exclamation point.
Here's what my HBOOT screen looks like:
ACE PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-0.85.0019
MICROP-0438
RADIO-26.06.06.30_M
eMMC-boot
Dec 27 2010, 14:47:30
HBOOT
<VOL UP> to previous item
<VOL DOWN> to next item
<POWER> to select item
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
FACTORY RESET
SIMLOCK
IMAGE CRC
The triangle has no comment or warning. ):
Ok man, let's try this. If possible do what you can with your Google account and see if there is a way to avoid all that hassle of waiting and what not. If your truly pressed, we can skip that, and the next step will be hitting factory reset. That will either wipe right there on the spot, boot you into Recovery (where we will have more options at our dispsal) or simply do nothing.
If none of these work then I will holler at someone with Dev skillz and see if they will pop in over here and put thier two cents in....
I've contacted google. Their forms says they may take up to 24 hours to get in touch with me about my account. I'll try wiping it.
Good deal. Go ahead and wipe and see where that takes us. Surely Google could assist in speeding it up a bit....
I went to factory reset, it showed the little installing screen with the green bar, and now it's hanging on the stupid htc logo screen again.
)':
Hmmm. Six minutes since you posted - it could possibly be booting. Unlikely though. Let me ask a Dev, I got just the dude if he is on. Hang tight Pal....
I sent a P.M. to the most competent developer we have for the Inspire. He's a good dude and he is on so sit tight...
I tried again and it's still stuck on that boot screen.
Thank you for your help!

So far you are the only person with this problem so we are running through the basics.
Did you get any errors or messages during the update? Did the phone run out of battery mid update? Did anything odd or unusual happen?
quick question in while in the topic, had he done a FULL nandroid backup and was able to atleast get to boot screen would he be able to restore his phone? just a quick questions because to this day i have no idea how the nandroid thing works i cant do it on my x64 vista either and dont see how it comes in handy lol. Sorry just trying to fig it out.
after i tried to install the radio update it showed some sort of chip with an arrow and then it froze for over 10 mins so i ended up taking out the battery
@zgjbeta Yes. If you can get to the blinkin android screen, your not really bricked. Nandroid would fix it right up.
If it wont even turn on, like your case. I dono what to tell you.
For starters, try to connect it to a wall outlet to make sure its not the battery.
Also tell us exactly what happened during the update process.
EDIT: I read your most recent post. That's strange because everyone gets the chip thing, you shouldve tried home + back or menu + green + red.
One of those wouldve most likely worked.
Good luck.
Also maybe try to take it out again and put it back in.
I had the chip and arrow after the radio update, I didn't take the battery out, started pressing random keys, lol... and then it went away and booted back to a JF recovery style screen. Pressed home + back and it rebooted to a stuck flashing android. Then did call+menu+end to reboot and it has worked fine ever since.
There is definitely something whacky going on...
yes i tried to do the home key plus end and camera plus end options while in that chip state but didnt do anything so i resolve to take out the battery and it wont turn on again. i also tried all the button reset combo nothing happens
If it wont even turn then there is really nothing that can be done. Another thing I would try is if you know someone else with a G1 try their battery.

Also try cleaning the battery contacts in the phone and on the battery. This happened to one of my dumbphones once - cleaned out the battery contacts and it worked again. Bizzare situation, simple solutions first.
You might've turned it off while it was writing a vital file. Thus your phone might be bricked.
Here's an idea - sent it back to T-Mobile/HTC - and I don't think they will notice you violated your warranty until it's too late (they have to fix your phone to find out) so you could just refuse to pay and have them send it back to you.
I too saw the chip with the arrow thing, so that makes 3 people in this thread. It happened when I did the radio update. Anyway, in my case, I held down the recovery mode keys for a while and it went to the menu. Then I just rebooted and everything was great. Glad I didn't take out the battery (I considered it).
I had the chip and just waited and it took care of itself. Just be patient people.
plug in the wall charger, wait 10 seconds, then hold the red power button for 3-5 seconds then release, it should turn on
i tried that didnt work anymore advice?
also is there any way to run diagnostics of this phone to pc to make it work?
If the phone won't turn on, go back to the T-Mobile store and ***** em out. Not much else to say if we can't even get power to it.
Hi!
Today I got from my friend a bricked Desire S.
He said, he tried updating a pile of apps at once and it froze. He left it to cope with that and when he was back it was turned off.
When turned on it would stuck on htc logo. He read somewhere that he has to perform a "factory reset". I'm not sure what exactly has he done later (he did this with holding the volume up and power buttons and than there had to be, as he said, an option to reset the device), but the result is, that the device doesn't respond at all.
Nothing happens when connected to USB or charger.
Is there anything I can do about it?
Maybe force push bootloader with adb?
Please, help guys
Hi,
it doesn't do anything at all?
Power button?
Power button + Volume down?
Recharge battery?
Connect to a PC with properly installed htc drivers?
Remove battery and put it back?
Unfortunately yes.
Tried different combinations several times - once or twice the led blinked for like a half a second, but than nothing.
I have some flashing experience and I learn quickly. If You have ANY ideas, I'll try to make them happen.
I will try everything, as I have nothing to loose
Regards.

Whenever we see “And I was updating apps and it froze up.....” we have a suspicion we perhaps have another case of the eMMC chip packing in. At least he didn’t do a battery pull. Holding UP + DOWN + POWER has a similar effect to hitting reset on a PC. You can’t get to recovery this way.
With the phone off, hold just the DOWN + POWER. Does the phone then boot into HBOOT? (white screen with coloured text and little green androids at the bottom). If it does, great. You can choose RECOVERY from this and do a factory reset. If the phone does a series of (seven?) quick vibrations maybe not so good.
Search for “eMMC” in this forum to get plenty of people who had this problem, and how (some of them) have been able to fix it. Knowing what to search for is half the battle!
For example check this thread out...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1284196
Geek out!
Thanks for the reply,
I actually have tried entering the hboot few times - with no success.
It doesn't respond at all.
I've read about this chip, but I want to make sure there is no option to force the phone to enter recovery. Than I would probably know what to do next.
Regards.

Not sounding good I'm afraid. The last resort would be to contact HTC and try to get it repaired on warranty. They are very very aware of the problem, and once you tell them "I was updating all apps at once and it froze" they'll accept it as a known hardware failure. Like you say, you have nothing to loose in trying.
A friend recently had this, and sent if off to HTC for repair. As the description of the fault was a known hardware failure, they never bothered to test it first, so they didn't notice it had been rooted! It just went straight through to get a main board replacement. It took five weeks for them to return it though. Best fish out that battered Nokia in your drawer and charge it up ready!
Good luck!
Uh, these are quite bad news, but I'm pretty sure they will accept it on warranty, since my friend haven't done anything "illegal" with it
Thank You for Your fast replies
Regards.
Sorry but i have been frantically searching the forum but cannot find what i need. This morning my phone was acting strangely so I restarted it, but it seemed to be stuck in a loop restarting again and again. I read on here to hold volume up/down and power to be able to remove battery, then I put batt back in held vol down and pressed power and on the menu in selected recovery. My problem now is phone is stuck on a black screen with phone picture and red warning sign. I don't know where to go from here...sorry if this has been covered a million times but i searched for a good half hour and was getting forum fever. My Desire S is stock on android 2.3.5. Many thanks if you can help.
Your lucky that you can reach bootloader. From there find an option to reset your phone.
@lennyboi77
Thats your stock recovery, press vol up+power to access its menu. Try a reset.
ITs also worth a look here just to make sure you haven't damaged your phone.
From that point (if the reset never worked) I feel that you can only go the RUU route. So please can you post the results of "fastboot getvar all" remember to remove your serial and imei. From that I should be able to point you to the correct RUU and if you will need a goldcard.
Dun worry, had that twice when installing ruu. but i never stop there, continued until succeed. BUT make sure u follow the step accordingly.
Is ur phone branded?

Thanks for your replies guys, I ended up going on the live chat on HTC website and the guy guided me through doing a hard reset...was a bit worried at one point as he told me to pull the battery when it was doing the constant reset thing but he assured me it was fine to do so! Thankfully my phone has been fine since, I wasn't trying to install a RUU it was just freaking out of its own accord. Maybe it don't like mondays.

Mondays - Who does?....glad to hear phone fixed, you should update the title of the first post to have [SOLVED] at the start.
Pulling the battery is never recommended, even if told to do so by HTC support - I mean what do they have to loose? the only possibly safe opportunity to do so, is mid way through the phones power on and off cycle and you only have a tiny window, although this is only a last resort and not something to be tried by the faint at heart.
how do all.... nexus s I9023
i have just purchased a some what lovely google nexus s I9023
working fine for an hour or so...
i had a little pop up asking me to update...
i thought OK... sure why not...
having done so phone worked fine for an additional 20 mins...
then phone froze... i took the battery out and started it up again...
it froze on GOOGLE screen...
iv trawled every forum possible since this has happened...
now the PHONE WILL NOT EVEN TURN ON...
the phone is completely stock no mods or addon's to it!
im at the end of my tether.. SOME ONE PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!
Hold volume up + power after reinserting the battery and putting it on charge. Do you enter bootloader mode? And what happens if you click recovery?
done the hold volume up and press power...
still no joy unresponsive!!
when it does work after 50 attempts of taking the battery out and putting it back in and doing volume and power
it turns on.. scroll to recovery.. it turns off google screen pops on...
then a Green android lying on his back appears with its stomach open showing white blocks and a explanation mark above it!
IM PUZZLED!!!!!
it then resets it self going back to being unresponsive!!
HELP!!!!
Give this a shot.
Also, could it be a power button issue? And that android screen is the splash for stock recovery. You have to press vol. up + power again to get past it, beyond this you can do a factory reset and similar magic. However you likely don't want this, and on the screen where you chose to enter recovery, you'll likely want to use fastboot to unlock the phone (which will wipe all personal data) and then flash a stock ROM again. At this point i would advise lots and lots of reading.
If it's less than a year old, i would be calling samsung though. If it is a new phone i would definitely do this first. Do not unlock unless you have no chance of going through warranty. Will need to know the exact status of the phone for best advice here.
I did and man my phone is messed up. It got stock (going on 15 min) atthat little droid animation with the wireball rolling around in the android belly. Not sure how to fix it.

I just pressed the power and volume up/down then it loaded to the bootloader. Once there i wiped cache and data. Then waited a bit while it was wiping data, then held down the power and it restarted. Hopefully that helps.
Ugh, im getting pissed. Second phone same thing. I factory reset from the settings menu. 100% stock. Every time i restart the damn phone it stuck attempting for format data for >15 mintues before i get pissed. If i choose bt tools or factory, it loads the phone just fine, but when i reset, back to the same problem.
EDIT: 8th time around it took just over 13 minutes and the phone reset.

Did it actually reset itself though? Clearly there's something wrong with the stock recovery. I can wipe cache fine, but do a data wipe, or factory reset, and it hangs... though I never let it go more than 5 minutes. I had used the fxz files previously, so I'm glad to hear it's not those and apparently a problem with the actual recovery img that came with the phone.
It also does seem to actually wipe data... something just must be getting stuck not allowing it to move forward when it's done.

Well at least that's good to know - but that seems way off timewise, regardless. I know there's more internal storage than most devices, but still...
Yep, it just takes a massively long time. Sorry for the pre teen freak out.

boot with android guy screen
Did anyone that had this problem have a progress bar the whole time? I bought a used Razr maxx hd online and it was factory reset. I tried to boot and got the same issue (android guy with geometry spinning forever) did a hard reset (power + volume down) same thing. Finally got into recovery menu (power + volume up + volume down) and any option i chose would reboot and finally load. But after activating the phone and having all my apps loaded I decided to test a reboot on the phone. Sadly it got stuck again and after using the same method to boot, I had lost everything. Hope there's a fix for this, not sure I can do a swap since I bought this used.
