Can I safely uninstall htc widgets? - HTC Sensation

I want to uninstall all the widgets that I know for a fact that I don't use. I don't want to freeze them as I rather completely removed them.
Pretty much anything related to
Stocks
Twitter
Music
News
Etc.

I have and it works. Just go to system/apps and remove what you don't want. Make a backup of ur Rom first in case mistakes are made

In case I do happen mess up, is fixing the problem as simple so flashing a new rom?
Also, I might use titanium backup to remove them rather than root. Explorer.

I wouldn't delete - copy them to your sd card... then if all else fails, you copy them back to /system/apps, change permissions to 644 ("busybox chmod -R 644 /system/apps/*"), and reboot... 9 times out of 10 you'll be good to go again.
But any filename that has "widget" in it, you should be ok, as that only affects the actual widget, not the app itself. So as long as you don't want any widgets, it shouldn't hurt anything.
And I wouldn't mess with the lockscreen stuff if you start feeling tempted!

What does that mean if the filename has widget in it?? Then he might as well delete the Widgets on the home screen!
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App

I basically just meant that any .apk or odex file in /system/apps that has "widget" in the name is tied strictly to a widget. So removing them won't hurt anything at all... unless, that is, you want to use one of the widgets...

Are you rooted running cwm? If so download rom cleaner it is a flashable script to eliminate sense bloat... But keeps sense launcher and lock screen

hmm dont use aosp stuff.
i will have to look i think it wad vaelpak that was senseless...
so does that mean its a sense thing that wont allow the sideways unlock?

It is a sense thing, but on any 2.2 Sense rom you can remove the HTCLockscreen and the original one will appear in its place. It works, but you can't use it for controlling Sense applications (music, calendar, sense alarm clock).

You have a couple options. If you have EStrongs file explorer and root and read/write turned on go to /system/app/ and delete htclockscreen.apk. or you can flash the attached file. this removes the HTC Sense lockscreen and just leaves the vanilla. If you use sense apps like alarm they wont work properly so you should download an alternative from the market like open alarm or AlarmKlock

Actually the alarm will work as long as you use the asop clock to set alarms...
Just wondering if there still isn't anyway to use the vanilla lock screen to answer calls yet?
oh i know i can just remove the apk, but oh god i hate the Vanilla lock screen... blah yuck.
ok first thing you'll say is the iphone style is nearly the same.
nope, it isnt is my answer.
You can also use widget locker on the market. it has an option for iPhone style screen unlocker.

For what I know (which isn't that much), for that you need to have root on your phone and use adb commands or an app like Titanium Backup or other, but unless your phone is s-off, you can only have temp root at the moment, on a reboot you will loose root privileges and everything would be installed back again...
So, if you don't have s-off, you'll have to wait...
go to the dev forum & look for the fr3vo temp-root post & the post about how to disable apps.
Thanks for your replies...
I know that i need a root... Hence me saying at the start of my OP after I've rooted using Eugenes perma temp root...
I know how to delete apps and I know I need a root to do so, I just want to make sure the apps I've listed are ok to delete?

You didn't pay attention to the second part of xnifex's post, which mentioned to go to the dev section and look at the post about how to disable apps.
There is a running list in the second post of which apps people have found safe to disable.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1150805
Ok. I shall do this.
Thank-a-gen

All u have to do is temp root and download root explorer. Go to system/apps and delete whatever apks u don't want. Use task killer clear sense launcher and apps will be gone.

Icons turning to default after reboot?

Everytime I reboot my icons change to the green uploading icons and not to the normal ones. I have to manually remove them and add them again. Another thing i've notices is once in a while distorted horizontal lines appear across some apps. They will not go away most of the time unless I reboot.?
Sometimes my widgets get colored lines in it and i have to reboot to. My.contacts app disappear and turn into to people app all on its on til i reboot. Hope they fix these issues but no updates in site tmobile and phone companies have bad service.

I have the same problem but it only happens with a few specific games every time. It's annoying but I've just stopped fixing it and leave them as the android icon.
Mine was doing this for SD installed apps... Solved in the last update however...
Change the theme and back to restore the icons... marginally better than deleting and re-adding
You could also change the language, go to the main page, change the language back to what is was and it'll solve the problem.
move the apps that are loosing it's icons from sd to internal memory.
few of my games were doing this on reboot.
soon as I moved them to internal, no more problems.
kinda sucks that we can't take advantage of app2sd feature that comes with some of apps but until we get an update that fixes this bug, this is the only sure way I've found.

Yep, that fixed it after a restart. Why do some games install on the phone and some on SD? There doesn't seem to be any consistency.

I don't think apps install on the SD unless specified. As for the icons changing on reboot. This has been a problem on Android since apps to SD was implemented.

I'm having the same problem as well with my game icons.
That worked, Thanks!
My Facebook app on my main screen does the same thing -- I do have it moved to the SD card. Randomly the correct icon/logo appears on it, but most of the time it's the generic Android icon. I've learned to live with it -- maybe they'll fix it someday.
My icons return after a reboot, when I turn the phone off/on.
Got a 5 min wait for new user to post...

I tried this and it didn't work, until I realized that there were two Sense applications running and I killed the wrong one...D'oh!
I tried to force stop HTC sense and dashboard.... none of this worked.
So I tried changing the theme and IT WORKED!!!! When I restored my previous theme, all the icons went back to normal.
This the easiest non-frustrating method. From time to time, my phone crashes and restarts by itself and all my icons would change.
Has anyone tried using Rom Manager and run "fix permissions" with any luck?

It is not a permissions issue. It is quite simple.. the desktop icons are loaded before the sd card is mounted and accessible so it can't load the icons and won't retry later. Causing sense to reload in any way after the SD card is mounted will reload the icons. Changing themes works. Killing sense to force a reload works. Using titanium backup to freeze/unfreeze any of the sense Widgets works. I'm sure there are plenty more ways of making sense reload

icons goes away because the apk is installed on the sd card, you must reboot phone in order to view it again, or install apks directly in phone's memory...

Are they widgets or icons? It's well known not to install widgets to the sd card as this is what can happen. Check they haven't and if they have move them back to internal memory.
I have the same problem. But I have to say the icons only are replaced by default icons on startscreens. In All Apps the icons are OK.
I asked HTC Support an got the answer I should try another microSD, which I did before asking. The support thinks maybe my card is not compatible or it can be damaged. As a result I would say answer not so helpful.
So I fixed the problem for me in moving all apps to phone.
@cjm1979: I only had it with icons, don't use many widgets

If it's just the stocks app, you can move the apk from /system/app to somewhere on your sd card (for backup purposes). Any root file explorer will allow you to do this. OR, you can just freeze it with Titanium.

Truff, this man speaks it! FWIW, I'd just freeze in TiBu.
I feel like a better option would probably be to figure out WHY the stocks app is using so much CPU...when I was still on the RUU the app rarely did anything even though I put stocks into it and such. Maybe something's wrong?

Maybe syncing in the background? And if there's no connection it could be looking for one constantly.
