Why is the Droid Chrage currently the most expensive handset? I mean, it's a suped-up version of the Fascinate (a $50 handset). It doesn't even run GB @ stock right now.
Anyone have some thoughts about this strange overpricing?
Thanks for all the replies! Very interesting!

Its the premium cost for LTE. that plus the screen
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA Premium App
It's partly because of 4G, but not exclusively, because there are two less expensive 4G devices -- the $249 Thunderbolt and $199 Revolution. That said, when compared to those two phones, the price difference can be explained (I hesitate to use the word "justified") to some extent.
First, there's the Super AMOLED Plus screen. The Thunderbolt and Revolution run regular LCDs.
Then, and in many ways this is the most important, there's battery life. The Charge's life may not be great compared to 3G devices, but compared to the Thunderbolt or Revolution it has a big advantage.
Lastly, while all three have a single-core 1Ghz processor, the Hummingbird still takes the lead over the Snapdragon 8655 used in the other two devices (though the Thunderbolt does have more RAM).
The Revolution falls behind still with a 5MP camera (vs. 8) and a 16GB SD card (vs. 32).

Isn't the screen similar to the Fascinate?
Also, the charge is only $70 at Amazon. Now I fell ripped off for paying $130 for it just before they discontinued unlimited data. Of course, if it weren't for that I would've waited and bought a different phone.

Are you sure about that? I was getting 1600+ quadrant on stock 2.2 on the Motorola Triumph (which uses a 8655).

Only to an extent. The Fasinate has a Super AMOLED screen while the Charge has the newer Super AMOLED Plus, and while that may not sound like much there are some pretty major differences between the two. The original used a horrible pixel matrix (PenTile) which lead to a very noticeable text graininess and pixelation.
The Plus screen uses a regular arrangement, and as such looks drastically sharper despite having a lower pixel density from being .3 inches bigger. I can personally attest to the difference as a former Fascinate owner... it's a big, big step up.

For starters, Quadrant scores are entirely meaningless when used to compare different devices. The tests it runs are biased towards Snapdragons because they're optimized for floating-point operations, meaning arithmetic. But I don't think most people use their phones primarily to crunch numbers.
That said, the 8655's CPU core is in general slightly faster than the Hummingbird's, but not enough to be noticeable in daily usage, and when comparing SoCs it's also about the GPU... and that's where there's a big difference between the two. Here's the Hummingbird's PowerVR SGX540 GPU compared to the Snapdragon's Adreno 205:

I refer you to any Econ 101 textbook.
Stuff costs whatever the intersection of the supply and demand curves dictates.
The Charge at full retail is over $100 cheaper than the 16 gig iPhone at full retail and over $200 cheaper than the 32 gig.
The reason the Charge is so expensive is because there is no special data plan set up for it. At $299.99 there's still very little profit to be made by the stores because the phone itself costs the stores a lot of money to carry.
The iPhone has a special data plan set for it that pays out double than what the regular data plan does. Still, the cost of the phone for the store is so damn high that the iPhone still brings in ****ty profit.
4G phones are so expensive that VZW should add a special data plan for the stores that pays out more, so they can charge less for the phones.
Remember, if you go to a store and they try to get you to buy a Dinc2 or X2 or Droid 3 over any 4G phone, it's because the 4G phones are a profit nightmare.

That would be a terrible idea. If you're worried about the price of the phone, don't buy from a verizon store. Best buy mobile has the phone for $199.99 and I bet you could get it even cheaper on the internet.

Though you are completely right....that is the stupidest answer I have ever heard. A very douchebag response on your part, and you know it.
Though I don't know for sure I'm assuming the OP is a fascinate convert so he is probably puzzled why Verizon replaced the fascinate with a phone that costs 3x more. The screen is definitely better and 4G LTE has really surprised, never thought it was this fast!

I'm not saying to charge the customer more for the data. Apple data for 2gigs is still $30 a month.
What I'm saying is that VZW should give the stores more money for LTE data.
I glady paid $270 for my Charge considering the fact that 32GB micro SD cards still cost $70+
I'm surprised no one has mentioned this.
More like $50. I was impressed that I got a class 4 card with mine, though- every phone I've owned has come with a class 2 SD (as did my wife's Charge).

The speed rating (c2 c4 c6 etc...) is only for write speeds. Read speeds are the same I guess.
Anyway, I read that on another forum. So for reading (which is the primary interaction your phone will be have with the card probably 90% of the time if not higher), the speed rating of the card should not matter. I was just about to go get a C6 but then I found the information on another forum and had my hopes dashed.
Correct me if you can...

Just because 90% of the time you are reading from the SD card doesn't mean that the other 10% is allowed to be broken.
Case in point, 720p recording on my class 2 is not possible. An advertised, paid-for feature of my phone is unavailable to me. How is this okay, I ask you?

Generally, the cards with the faster write speed will also have a faster read speed. However, that can vary. I benchmarked the following 3 cards via ATTO:
1) Sandisk 32GB C4 mSDHC from the Thunderbolt
2) Sandisk 32GB C2 mSDHC that I had bought when I had my Touch Pro2
3) Samsung 32GB C2 mSDHC from the Droid Charge.
In terms of speed, the Sandisk C4 was by far the fastest in both read and write speed. Next in line was the Sandisk C2, which beat the Samsung C2 all around as well, but by a smaller margin.
This also proves that class isn't everything, brand can make a difference as well. The Samsung was bordering at even pulling true C2 speeds, whereas the Sandisk lived up to the claim with a good margin. Both of the Sandisk cards (C2 and C4) were really underrated, but that is a good thing.
In regard to the pricing- I think it was just to keep it in line with the iPhone's pricing. The 32GB model is $299, is it not? And the Charge is the competing Android flagship to the iPhone (debatable, perhaps, to those who prefer the Thunderbolt, but as a Droid branded phone it's certainly marketed as such).

I know all the tech sites and forums and whatnot always rave about the newest flagship device and seem to ignore even well specced budget phones, especially region or carrier specific ones. I am on T-mobile but am constantly checking out the new phones available on AT&T since T-mobile phones suck in general. There are some amazing budget phones that are almost as well specced and even better built, costing half the price, with 1/100 the publicity. Earlier in the year I bought a Pantech burst for one of my relatives. It only cost $200 on eBay. It was super smooth and fast, and the AMOLED screen made it pop. I was always playing with it and comparing it to my $450 HTC One X. The One X was actually slower, and the screen didn't feel as resilient. The camera was much better, but besides that, I couldn't really find any reason to justify the 2x++ cost.
Today I went to go play with more phones. AT&T has two new budget phones. The LG Escape and the Pantech Flex. They are both running a dual-core S4 and lightly skinned and super fast. Both have qHD displays at 4.3" with top tier IPS and AMOLED displays. At that screen size, 720p wouldn't have made much a difference for me or most people, and it's a perfect hand-holding size. I find it just as usable as the 4.8" S III, and even easier and faster than the cumbersome 5.3" Note I am currently rocking. The cameras are only marginally worse than top flagship phones, and they come with NFC and even big batteries. The LG Escape is a standout with 2150mah battery and a really great feeling curved and thin build that's grippy and rather seamess and unbroken. The petite size with very narrow bezels also makes it stand out. LTE is a given. Both devices are literally brand new just came out and you can easily find them on eBay for $250. I'm really digging the LG Escape and get more and more annoyed thinking about the $520 I dropped a couple months ago to get the international Galaxy Note in my pocket that is slow and clunky and big. And no it's not about price depreciation and tech obsolescence. The Note still costs $520 even today, and most flagship phones of yesteryear are still expensive on eBay.
Last year the difference between high-end and budget was more dramatic since the cameras were way better on the high-end side and you got dual-core instead of single core. The screens were also terrible with WVGA and poor viewing angles and colors. This year is very different. Budget phones have the same blazing S4 krait processor that the high-end has, with all the same NFC, GPS, bluetooth, and everything else under the sun. The cameras have not improved much at the high-end whereas the lower-end has caught up and is nipping at their heels. Build quality is even better on the low-end in many cases (cough S III cough), and they always have removable batteries and microSD slots to expand their pitiful 4GB of memory. In a month, the LG Escape and Pantech Flex will probably drop to $200. The S III and One X are both still super expensive. This year at least, the tortoise has caught up to the hare, and budget-conscious consumers should be aware how great the lower end offerings are this year, and not be afraid to save a ton of money. It's not every year the fastest processor available becomes commoditized for budget phones and carriers are forcing LTE and big batteries into everything from low to high.

Wasn't really talking about benchmarks. Just general UI smoothness. The Burst felt a lot smoother, even within apps.
I'm basing these on eBay prices. Why would you want to lock yourself to a contract when you can save so much on monthly fees with a no-contract plan? I don't really pay attention to those Amazon Wireless or Best Buy or special sales because they all have a catch, and you usually have to be a new customer for the best deals.
The One X is still a good $350 for a new one on eBay.
I would not consider the Razr M a budget phone. It doesn't fall under $200. In fact, it's like over $450 on eBay. You could buy it on contract for $100, but the same goes for a lot of other flagship phones. The contract price usually doesn't correlate directly with the second-hand market price, so even if the Razr M dropped to free on contract, it would still be $400+. It only goes down over time. It's strange because if a phone is perceived as a budget phone like the Flex or the Escape, even if it has a $400+ MSRP, it will be a paltry $200 or less from the get go on eBay. It's all perception, even though the MSRP is probably right and the difference between the budget and flagship phone is really only $100-150 to buy retail as well as wholesale, people think they gotta price it way low since its budget.
It's kind of amazing how something like the Atrix HD, which is even faster/bigger/better than the original Razr on Verizon, is priced lower at around $300 new. The old Razr still commands $350+ for a new one. The Razr M still has qHD and the same internals as the Atrix HD but is a good $150 more. Yeah these are all eBay prices. Since the Atrix HD was launched as a budget $99 phone, even though the MSRP is probably only $100 difference at most from both old and new flagship phones, people will sell it much lower. Ditto for other budget phones that have an even bigger price disparity and sell for under $200.
It sucks if you have a budget phone and want to sell it used and get the most out of what the claimed MSRP is, but find out it sells for less than half that new and even less used. The on-contract price you paid is not a good measure of the phone's wholesale value the carrier paid since whether free or up to $200, the expensive contract plans make up for the difference and then some. That's how they can afford to drop everything to a penny on sale days, although they would of course love you to get the crappiest cheapest smartphone anyway. If you plan on buying these budget phones of course from eBay, and their perceived value drops them like a stone, it's a steal.
This minor difference between budget and high-end is gonna get much worse with Windows 8. They are all literally 1.5Ghz S4 Krait with 1GB RAM. Will a slightly better camera and a slightly bigger size/resolution screen really justify the over 2x price premium for a flagship?
we'll see

Definitely better if "budget" phones are simply last gen flagships. It would make for much better compatibility down the road.
That LG looks nice but I have a couple of friends LG phones and they have a lot of little issues so I'm a little gun shy of them right now.
I think we're starting to hit a sweet spot for phone tech. Jelly Bean runs great on a dual core phone with 1 gig so you don't need new tech for a nice phone.
I totally agree, just seeing the Galaxy S III on MetroPCS is pretty amazing. I know its kind of off topic, but it still surprises me.

I'm in the market for an S3...looking to pick one up used since I'm still under contract (and don't want to lose unlimited data anyways). With the S4 coming out in the next month or two, do you think the used price of the S3 will significantly drop (say by $50 or more from it's current going rate)?
Maybe, values drop once a new model actually comes out.

If you're talking ebay no. The HTC Thunderbolt goes for more than that. Even the original Droid..... Ohh you mean a 50 dollar price drop.... not 50 total.. I'm dumb. I'd say maybe by August or October it should be that much less on average, but it's really an up and down market on ebay assuming that's what you're referring to.
If you check eBay at the right times you will find really good deals right now (not this exact moment). I saw a good condition white one sell the other day for 270. You gotta know when to find them. Yea, the S3 lets you use the physical microsd card as it should be used - expandable, optional storage - without the headache of losing app structure.
Just because you can just swap cards out at a whim doesn't mean you'll want to open it up to the environment all the time. There is definitely a certain amount of data I want always there, and 16 isn't enough. 32 isn't enough.
I'll be getting a 64 gig S4 for sure, I've only had 32 gig S3's and still wouldn't get a 16 instead of a 32.
Up to you OP, but i'd use the internal memory size as the first qualifying point, and then look more closely at what was left.

+100 to this. Just snagged a 32GB Dev Edition off CL for $280 lol.
I am sure that the price will drop the once the S4 comes out, that is the nature of technology. Question is whether it would be worth the wait? If you have to wait 2-3 months to save 50 bucks? Get it now and start enjoying it!
It will stick from 200to 300 on eBay . may find it cheaper on CL.

I have a 16GB Razr Maxx right now and a 64GB microsd and never had any worries about space. The microsd fits all my music, pics and vids with plenty to spare, and I have 7 out of the 8GB usable internal storage free (the other 8 is used for system and apps). So I'm not too worried about internal storage size.
There hasn't been much available on CL in my area, and I'd personally rather pay the little bit extra on swappa or ebay and get some protection behind my purchase. I actually just picked one up on swappa since Verizon hasn't mention a thing about their S3 and I don't want to wait another month or two.
I just traded an original Droid RAZR + $60 a few days ago for a GS3. Still complete w/ box & accessories and in great shape. Granted, the RAZR was also complete and had a fancy case. I have seen plenty of these GS3's for $300 on craigslist(mostly the ATT / T-Mob versions). Although GS2's are maintaining a steady $200 so I doubt the 3 will drop much more anytime soon.
Hell, I sold an HTC HD2 a few months ago for $250 and that phone's like 3 years old now(then again, it does have a bit of a cult following)

Really... You couldn't use a better word than guesstimate?
CraigList for the win! I get all my phones off of there. Once the S4 comes out people will be selling their S3's within a week. Prime time to get a good deal.:good:
So I'm in the process of buying a new phone. I personally don't have a lot of money to spend so the $200 price point is one I'm trying to hit, but I'm not opposed to spending $300 for a vastly superior phone. I would like the phone to be on the smaller side of things, don't approach the phablet territory (~6 or greater inches). I'm not a big phone spec guy, I don't care to have the fastest processor or huge amounts of ram seeing as the most taxing thing I do on my phone is play Clash of Clans. I don't care to have a high resolution screen at all, 720p would be fine. I would like it to have good wifi support and be able to get 4G LTE, now the last and most important part is it NEEDS to have a all day in to tomorrow type battery.
Priorities:
1. Cheap
2. Big battery
3. LTE support
4. Good wifi support
Here are a few phones I'm looking at
Moto X,G,E Nexus 5???, BlackBerry Z10.
I'm really just looking for suggestions here because all of those phones seem to be besides what I'm looking for, let me know if there are any phones that I'm missing.

As a side note I been using them for 3 years and they been good to me and I gotten my bill with them by getting discounts every 6 month I paid on time some my monthy bill is $15- a month cheaper than when I started. You can PM if needed. I am now paying $40 a month using a Galaxy S3 and it getting LTE service where I live. I get 2.5 gb of data month before throttled. I never gone other the limit so dont know how fast it is when throttled.

Waste of money to get that Sandisk card and will never get close to 95MB/95MB read/write speed. No current smartphone/tablet can either reach that speed.
I just got the Neo Hybrid was that a waste of money too?

I don't think it's a waste. If you can afford it, get the best and let your phone be the bottle neck. The card will most likely be in use longer than the phone.
Great MicroSD, and even better case. Ignore the troll. Good decision on your part!!
damn that is one fast card, I have the original OEM sandisk 128GB, and it is a little slow. I wonder if sandisk make one that fast in 128gb capacity

SanDisk upped it to 48MB/s read on the new one. Lexar has one that reads at 95MB/s but has slower write speeds. I haven't gotten mine to test out yet though

It's not worth getting a faster card just for the Note 4 as no phone out currently can support those UHS-I speeds. A basic class 10 card UHS-I U1 card is good enough for Note 4 4k recording.
The Samsung pro card is useful if you're removing the card from your phone and transferring it via a USB 3.0 reader, otherwise there's no benefit within the phone.

But lexar didnt disclose the write speed, b&h says minimum of 10mb, that doesn't sound promising.

UHS-I U1 means a guaranteed write of 10MB/s. It's safe to assume that the write speed will be around 25MB/s like the 16GB version. That's still better than the SanDisk Ultra which writes at 15MB/s. At least you'd get close to 95MB/s when taking stuff off the card though but it probably isn't the best solution for a GoPro 4 Black
I picked it up the other day for cheap on Amazon but it's still backordered/not released so I can't post benchmarks.
Lexar writes at 47MB/s

Don't think it applies to the 128GB version. It's speed class U1 instead of speed class U3 like the 32Gb and 64GB versions. The 16Gb version is also a U1 and writes at 25MB/s

What price did you get it at? Amazon shows $120 right now, with a 1-2 month delivery. I thought this is scheduled to release later this month.

It's not wasting money, unless you only plan to use it in the phone, and then throw it away when you're done using the phone. There's a bit of future-proofing built in to a purchase like that. Unless you know the facts about how a person intends to use the chip beyond the phone, don't state it's a waste of money. Goes both ways. As far as the troll comment, I only state that to people who's first post in a thread is negative. Now if you had said "This card could be overkill, since your device won't reach those r/w speeds" that would be different. It's all in the tone you took.

Oh, quick note...yeah, pun intended. Wifi File Transfer Pro in the play store, is a great investment, if you have a Wireless AC router. Since the Note 4 has 802.11ac built in, wireless transfers on your home network would be much faster than through the cable.

I love the quick note. Never knew about it. I have an AC router so that is something I'll look into. Now if only my gopro could use that too....
I thought I would chime in and say that I think it's a waste of money. I just now brought a 64GB 90MB's for my gopro. If I had went with a slower 64GB a year or so ago it wouldn't have worked inside of my current gopro. Well, it would have worked but I would have had a lot of freezing with my current settings. I know this because I tried it with the EVO. The experience was decent but far from the perfect recording I'm getting with the samsung pro. Now I'm sure a year or two from now if the cameras keep up the hype they will get even more demanding which mean I would have to upgrade my microsd at the same time I upgraded my action camera. Buying the largest fastest thing out there now will not futureproof me but will drain my wallet. The only reason why I'd do it is if I had a need for it in the present. Otherwise, might as well wait for the price to plummet. For the record I payed 42 bucks for the 64GB pro. Later on when I have the need for a largest size I'll probably pay the same price for something faster than what is currently out and larger than my current one for around 40 bucks again.
Amazon Link
Hope this helps someone. Much faster than the Evo if you plan to use a card reader or just want to swap it out for another device.
is it THAT much better than the EVO? i just got one, but i read the phones can't really read over 48mbps anyway so it doesn't matter.

if you plan to keep it in your note 4 then it won't make a difference. It only makes a difference if you plan to plug it into a USB 3.0 card reader or use the card for another device like a GoPro in the future

I own both and have to say the difference is not noticeable . The write and read speeds seem to peak at what the max is with the evo. Good price though if you are in the market but I wouldnt waste the money if you already own the evo 64gb
it's actually 30$ http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-64GB-..._m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0G3XAWD827KB40WBKFXZ
That's the larger SD card. Won't fit..
I got the Pro to future proof a bit. Maybe the next 2 gens of Androids will be able to make use of the speeds.

It's a hardware limitation. The software can go as far as the hardware can provide. If there was a way to toggle the software to make use of higher speeds, it would produce enough heat to bake the phone and in worst case, result in internal damage to the PCB (Something Samsung doesn't want you to know; they only repair phones, not replace them, lol). I still feel that I should purchased the Developers Edition of the Note 4 (Verizon Model) to be used on AT&T, but still currently backordered on Samsung's site.

Yeah, as soon as I bought a GoPro, I instantly regretted having slow cards. At $35 this a no brainer. The Evo can probably handle 1080p at 60 fps but not at 120. And considering you will be pulling the sd out of the GoPro and putting it in your phone all the time, your phone card will be used in the GoPro all the time. This is probably the best deal ever on a micro sd.
Using Wifi File Transfer Pro, with a Wireless AC Router, I routinely get 65mb write speeds while copying a rom from my desktop to the extSdcard, MB-MG64DA/AM
