What do you guys think of the AT&T/Tmobile Merger?

Do you guys think AT&T and Tmobile Merger will get approved by the Senate?

I will be moving to Sprint if this does go through... I left ATT for a reason...

I will be gone the day my grandfathered plan expires. I refuse to pay $100 more a month for less services. Why would any sane person do that?
I guess it will be back to sprint....

If it goes through im going back to sprint or boost, I refuse to pay att for any media services

Didn't ATT announce that existing T-Mobile customers will be able to keep their existing plans for as long as they want and still benefit from ATT's network and phone selection?
Pretty sure I read that this is a big point they will be making in front of the Senate.

Senate has nothing to say - FTC and Justice department. And even if they disapprove, Courts could can overturn ruling - they have done so with other anti-competitive mergers.

Hate ATT customer service!!! Do not want the merger to take place any time soon or ever! 100% against it!!!!

I will leave if it gets approved.

I liked AT&T. I left AT&T because even with full bars at my house, you can't make a call. Even if you can, the call would be dropped before you can finish it.
My GF has AT&T and her phone does the same thing. My neighbors have AT&T and they do they same thing. Even friends on AT&T that visit my house say the same thing.
The sad part is that it isn't just at my house, it's everywhere. Tmobile may not have great service everywhere, but it works where it should and I hardly get disconnected.
I don't mind AT&T because I travel across the US and I found that AT&T pretty much covers me better then Tmobile and they have pretty decent 3G coverage even between cities where Tmobile is GPRS only (not even EDGE).
My feelings toward the merger can go 2 ways:
First, I would not mind AT&T so much IF/WHEN they merge, they allow AT&T customers to use the great Tmobile signal found at my house... or keep the companies separate but allow access to all the GSM signals. Basically the best of both worlds. Like having access to both Tmobile and AT&T networks.
Second, they bring over the Even More Plus plans where you can have your own device and have a lower monthly bill, which makes sense. A part of the monthly bill pays for the big discounts you get off the phones you buy them on contract. If you don't buy their equipment, why would anyone be forced to pay for a discount they never got? I really like the EMP plans and I think they are awesome.
Lastly, they don't rape my bill. $30 a month for internet is INSANE!!!! Plus don't advertise $79 a month plans* (*requires a $30 data plan). WTF is that? It a plan REQUIRES something, then it should all be included in the price. The math should be $109 a month, which is too damn expensive.
I'm actually really happy with $59 1000 minutes unlimited everything else (less a 5gb cap).
That is reasonable and a good deal.

Will switch to VZW if merger happened.

The Senate doesn't approve or disapprove the sale. The FCC and the DOJ have the power in this. One of the closing off the cuff comments from one of the Senators was that he figured the sale would be approved with stipulations as has been speculated all along. We are not many years from a two carrier system...Sprint will never survive against the two behemoths.

I just read a cent article saying its gonna take up to 12 months to evaluate the deal and most of the senate is against it so I doubt it will be approved. If it gets approved that means that there will only be one GSM carrier in the US and consumers will not have a choice but to go with ATT if they want GSM so I dont see how the FCC will approve that.

They are playing nice right now because they are trying to get the deal approved. Do you think that the deal would get approved if ATT was out right saying they were going raise the rates on 50 million ppl? Probably not.
In turn if you own a company and you had 50 million ppl you could raise the rates up 20+ dollars why wouldn't you? Its all about the $$$$$$$$

Again, the Senate doesn't matter in the big scheme of things. And the same folks that will decide this sale approved the XM-Sirius merger which resulted in ONE satelite radio provider.
The vast majority of folks could care less if they have GSM or CDMA or TDMA or ABCD or whatever...they want good signal with cheap prices.

I hate to see it and say it, and it will probably take a while, but its going to get approved. AT&T will probably have to make some concessions, but in the end it will go through.

Im sorry but I disagree with you. Those who travel internationally and use different sim cards in different countries want a global phone and want to choose a gsm network. There are many people like that and it is only fair that they have a choice between at least 2 carriers

AT&T/T-Mobile merger confirmed???

Just saw a commercial for AT&T where they are literally saying they will have more cell sights once they merge with T-Mobile. I thought this was still in the approval stage??? So was this finally approved? If so, this is really gonna suck!

It's not confirmed but basically... it's looking like the merger is going to go through... they just jumped the gun, but for good reason the only real opposition they face is Sprint but one company probably won't be enough to mess up the merger, and it may not suck. If they want to keep customers, they have to maintain the quality that people are used to from both companies when they merge them. At first it's gonna be a mess but I think in the long run it's a good thing.

Also it's not about one company standing in the way. It's about the federal government, the FCC approving the deal. It's about everyday people playing their parts and writing to their congressman and to their senators as I have to tell them that we don't need or want this merger.

I say suck because I remember when I went through the Cingular to AT&T merger and I was treated like dirt. T-Mobile is one if the last companies I actually don't mind paying every month because of the stellar customer service they provide, and the amazing plan I have. That super limited data plan new iPhone customers get with AT&T is a joke. I am praying for the best, but expecting the worse. Strap in, here we go folks!!

I really hope that if this does happen we dont have the same awful data plans as the iphone 4. Thats one of the main reasons i didnt go with att.

Face the facts t-mobile is bought and it is what it is don't give me that there not junk call t-mobile if u don't believe it. I called corporate they say bought and will be finalized by the end of the year, they will honor or contracts til there up.

I have been a t-mo customer and I love the service. When this happens it's going to HUGE change for the current t-mo customers. We as current t-mo customers are not going to be happy.

You have to realize, AT&T didn't force T-Mobile in to this deal. Deutsche Telekom sold T-Mobile U.S. because they didn't have the cash to make it competitive and it was under performing financially. And the deal is officially done. It can become undone if it doesn't get U.S. approval but until and unless that happens both companies are preceding toward closing the deal. I'll bet you too that when T-Mobile discloses their Q2 numbers they're going to be bloody. Q1 was awful and that was with no impact from the merger announcement. Q2's results will help justify the need for the merger and most likely accelerate its approval.

SIGH. I'm contract FREE with tmobile right now. Now undecided whether to run in and get a contract, so I at least have two years locked pricing, or whether I'm going to stand by my previous conviction that I'd never give AT&T any of my hard earned money. At least if I grab a tmobile contract, I can feel like I'm screwing AT&T by paying less for a while. Then I can jump ship once my contract is over.

TMOUS would probably just sell to someone else if the ATT merger was denied or go out of business.
I don't understand why people are so against the merger really. I am happy with TMOUS but understand if they are not profitable enough to survive.
If there is a budget market out there I'm sure some other company will fill in the spot that TMOUS leaves open. If not then it was pretty obvious they they did the right thing.
Its no different that Cable TV companies. Survival of the fittest.

Your right but the government wouldn't allow that... from what I'm seeing the merger is going to go through, and the infrastructure of t-mobile will split up in some way. The end game for ATT is to acquire all or at the least most of t-mobile cell towers.
The fact is they can make it happen without monopolizing the industry because at the end of the day only certain states are at risk of monopolization.
ATT is not stupidly investing billions of dollars into attempting this merger when they know full well that their major problem preventing them from being okay'd is the fear of monopolization.
When I say Sprint is their major opposition I am stating that they are the ones highlighting the other downfalls besides monopolization

Yea that's probably a good idea. especially if you know for a fact that you can handle the current prices, because when things go through it may get worse or better, I'm highly doubting it will get better though. I would wait at least a year to lock anything in, it's gonna take at least 1 year to 1 and 1/2 before ATT can mess up tmobile rates on plans.

They also have a lot to gain if the AT&T merger doesn't get approved. They'd be able to buy T-Mobile for a lot less than $39B and they would. Their motive for scuttling the merger isn't because they're concerned about the little people. Once a company's "in play," which T-Mobile is, things can never go back to the way they were. Try to imagine a Sprint/T-Mobile merger with CDMA, Wi-MAX, and GSM. Not pretty.

I did get a new contract with the Sensations and am undecided if I'll stay. It will be difficult paying AT&T anything, even on a lower rate plan. I still have the unlimited data at $25.
It will be interesting to see how AT&T responds to us with contracts.

Anyone requiring a GSM phone can't expect to be treated well if/when this merger happens. I'm in that boat, it's sinking and the sharks are circling...

If you got it now then most likely your contract will be up right around the time that Att gets full control over t-mobile... So it shouldn't be too painful for you... But you also have to ask yourself what's the better option... Verizon is probably the only choice but their rates are higher... They do have better quality connection on average though... It's a tuff decision man

the merging will go through no doubt about it but it's not confirmed publicly yet till next year.got this info from t-mobile corporate master dealers.lots of changes took place in t-mobile since afet the merging possibility news and still changing as we speak.

Tmobile and Att merge still could not happen.

I want to keep my g2x for a while now, things a beast. I hope this merge falls through.

Good read, I hope this dents any forward movements of the acquisition. I would like to stay with tmobile, they've been the most fair from any other companies. And although times are changing and data needs to be tiered they still have some of the best plans for it available. I live in Chicago, so coverage isn't a problem for me, even when I went to school an hour away in the cornfields, I saw the coverage expand to out there with 3g, which lets me know they do improve their network, at least by me.

Unfortunately, people leaving T-Mobile for other carriers further justifies the acquisition in the eyes of the committees, being as T-Mobile 'needs' AT&T to 'rescue' them from their lack of profit due to losing customers. Of course, most of the gaping wound the customers are leaving through was created by AT&T's lovely commercials designed to convince the populace the deal is already signed and done, when the truth is quite the opposite.
Sadly, the more people leave and the fewer new customers T-Mobile gets every day is moving the deal closer and closer to becoming a reality :/
O, and as a side note, I'm sick of people calling this deal a merger. This is not a merger. The nicest word you can give this is 'acquisition'. It is closer to a buy and butcher program. A merger implies something will remain of T-Mobile on every level, especially upper management. DT is simply trying to offload T-Mobile onto the highest bidder, which just happened to be the reanimated corpse of Ma Bell. If any of AT&T's other acquisitions are anything to go by, especially considering how little of T-Mobile's current network AT&T actually needs, this is a situation of a company purely buying another to remove competition. AT&T will be closing a huge number of redundant stores and dismantling even more cell towers across the company they don't actually need. They will sell off the property and lay off at least 40-60% of the also redundant employees (including me) they don't need due to most of their facilities being practically next door to ours.
The USA will no longer have a choice of GSM carriers, which will remove all hope of having phones that can use the same frequencies and switching SIM cards when you please to leave an abusive carrier. AT&T's only real competition will be Verizon, which they have been closely following each others prices for years now. If you think you're paying a lot for a cell plan now, wait until AT&T is back in charge of pricing with no T-Mobile to cut under the price wall. T-Mobile has been losing profits because they've been trying to drag AT&T's prices down AND build massive improvements out to their network, while AT&T sits on a ridiculous amount of cash to fight the price battle with and hasn't been building their network out by choice. Not only that, but AT&T controls a HUGE chunk of the pipes in the USA that carriers have to lease from them in order to have backhaul to the tower. AT&T has been jacking the prices up on the backhaul but refusing to upgrade their equipment to allow other carriers to get better bandwidth to the site. There are no problems like that leasing backhaul from companies that don't compete directly with T-Mobile, AT&T just does it because they can and they have the biggest stick (huge sums of capital, political and corporate lackeys, etc) to beat competitors around with.

I've had every carrier (including Cricket and Boost) except for Verizon, and T-Mobile has been the best provider in terms of coverage and customer service I've had. I hope this aqusition doesn't go through. I can't see myself paying for tiered data plans and I'd hate to have to go back to sprint for unlimited plans seeing as the photon is their new flagship device.

Not only that but it would cost to break contact, for me id have to pay sprint a deposit etc..
So leaving isn't a option for me..

For once I'm glad the DOJ did something about this. There's an update where ATT CEO commented on how it's on the burden of proof from the DOJ to prove why the deal is bad.

This injunction is nothing more than the Obama regime shaking down AT&T. They have done it to other groups and companies. It is standard operating procedure for Obama. AT&T will pay their pound of flesh (or whatever Obama really wants) and the issue will be dismissed.
Just last week Google bought their way out of trouble for half a billion.

Everyone cried about Tmo's data cap. Verizon and ATT are capped also. For kicks I went to ATT to check pricing on Iphone. 1 phone plan was nearly the same as the 5 I have on Tmo. After I told that to the rep he closed the brochure and said yes thats our priceplan. I politely pointed out that thats probably the reason I was the only one in the store and made my way to the door.

What you guys don't understand is that T-Mobile can't make it on its own. That's why Deutsche Telekom was unloading it. They also can't afford the investment necessary to move to LTE and staying on HSPA isn't a viable long-term competitive option. Discounting their way to success (the current strategy) isn't viable when they have the highest unit cost base of the four major carriers. If the deal falls through, they'll end up merging with Sprint. Combining Sprint's CDMA network with T-Mobile's GSM network isn't going to be fun for either set of customers. Be careful what you wish for.

just got the breaking news from CNN...
so I guess Tmous willl be Tmous.
makes me happy since I like Tmous as it is and did not want to be with AT&T.

I was kind of looking forward to the synergies that would have gone into effect (better service or whatever), and thought that they could finally start competing with Verizon in terms of carrier ranking. It's a pity their asset sales deal went cold.

The part you heard was the Justice Department suing to stop the merger. More recently, the FCC also threatened to block the merger (back around Thanksgiving), noting that the deal would decrease competition in 99 out of 100 markets the FCC evaluated (the 1 remaining was Omaha, where T-mobile doesn't officially have a market presence, though oddly enough they do have a few cell towers there and you can get coverage.)
All those previous news articles, though, didn't mean the merger was off; it just meant that, for the first time in over a decade regulators actually decided to not just roll over and let a monopoly have its way. This is different; this is AT&T officially calling off the merger and agreeing to pay T-mobile the breakup fee.
This is great news for US cellular customers, as we still have our low-cost, more-open-than-anyone-else-in-the-US national competitor around, and with a nice cash windfall to boot. It's a little bittersweet, though, because Verizon just snuck in and bought out the last of the readily-available wireless spectrum from the cable companies, meaning that, should that buyout be approved, T-mobile no longer has a really good path to rolling out an LTE network.
So, in the short term it's an awesome deal for T-mobile and for US customers. In the long run it really depends on T-mobile pulling an LTE network out of its hat, and that's going to be hard to do now that the nearly all of the good wireless spectrum licenses are gobbled up by the Big Three.

They can't anymore; they own Motorola now, and the FCC has been very clear that carriers can't manufacture phones. And for good reason: if they hadn't imposed that rule in the 70s we'd still have a grand total of three wired handsets on the market (the ones offered by AT&T) and no cell phones, modems, fax machines, etc. If the FCC didn't approve AT&T&T-mobile, there's no way they'd approve Google&Motorola&T-mobile.
It's a shame, too. It seems obvious that Google was looking to buy a US wireless carrier, given their rush to buy up dark fiber and the small pilot project offering 1 Gbps internet to Kansas City. The obvious choice would be the relatively small carrier that was open enough to innovation to host the very first Android phone. Unfortunately they needed a patent portfolio to defend Android against Apple and Microsoft's lawsuit barrage, and Motorola basically held itself hostage, forcing Google to buy the whole company, rather than just the patents it wanted.

I was soooo happy when I heard this today! I f*ckin hate At&t. I have a friend that works for At&t and he even hates their cell service and its free for him! They are overpriced and I'm sure we would have gotten dicked as tmobile customers if the buyout would have went through.

well i say that because i pay $15 a month for texting, i dont think you can do that with att. all my friends with att are paying a **** ton, all my friends with tmo (not much lol) arent really even with data

Why do you think that would have made things better? Just curious, but IMO ATT would not have kept Tmo the same, if nothing else I'm sure they would have raised the rates on everything.

I don't think price hikes would occur if your plan was grandfathered. And we would benefit from additional UTMS service coverage. It's a good thing that AT&T is required to pay TMOUS 3 Billion as breakup fee, as well as increased service in 20 different areas.
