Google map is great I used to use it. However you still need to use data connection for first initial route. It's ok when you are in metro area but when you are hiking or no data connection area you can't use it unless you have a big network coverage and huge data limit roaming.
With Navit offline navigation you don't need to use data connection at all. That's the only one different thing.
Cheers!!!

Maps allows you to download regions for offline use.
You can't use turn by turn navigation with that Google offline map. Hopefully we can use it later.
If Google offline map can use turn by turn navigation would be great.

Well, at least G-Maps is available for the whole world, not just specific part of the map !

What is the best free offline map navigation software for android phones? I do not have a data plan and I would like a Android GPS I can use in the car.
I use iGO my way and works fine.
He said android, and free. I'm pretty sure there is no free offline maps but I think there was once a mod for Google navigation that allowed you to store maps offline.
That was a version of Google maps with cacheting, but doesn't make it a offline GPS mapping system.

Try Maverick. There is lite version. From their website:

Maverick isn't for driving directions though - it's for tracking off-road. Brut was the mod for Google maps which allowed you to cache them, but it's not being maintained any more.
Waze is good, and the more uses it the more updated roads etc will be.
Free?
A few months ago, I downloaded CoPilot for my Android HD2 for $4.95 or something like that. It's an excellent program. Admittedly, it's not "free", but for the $4.95, it is perfect for me. That was probably a one-time special, so it is certainly more than that now, but, dude, pay a little money and get something that works really well.
i downloaded igo off applanet for free

I downloaded GPS Status & Toolbox which gives Lat and Long. Not sure if this is what you are looking for. Look in the market under "GPS". There are a few other apps that might work. I looked at GPS Toolbox (didn't install). It might fit your needs.
Hope this helps.
Tony
nopee... tried like the whole first page on android market
still not the app i need
What about Google maps navigation?
Try Google Latitude or just search the market for 'gps', but be carefull some apps will use your data connection!

Wouldn't any offline Navigation GPS app work technically? Like ones that have all their map data downloaded on the device. Try Sygic (trial) (it'll let you select regional maps that way you won't have to download them all as a test).
+ 1 for sygic, or any other GPS app like Navigon or Copilot live.
What you're looking for is GPS Essentials, brother.

no no im looking for an app that uses only gps to give you your current location
Just announced,
Google Maps, in it's quest to battle Apple and others, is releasing an update shortly that will allow users to keep offline copies of maps for future use. You will be able to choose "favorite" locations, which like the previous Labs counterpart, will pre-cache an area. This time it will keep, and maintain copies of these stored areas.
I can't wait to enjoy this! I could care less about the data usage, but I'm looking forward to the huge amount of battery life I will be saving during the trip since I won't have to keep data on.

Yay for Google
atlast, i have uninstalled because it didnt support offline maps
Cant wait for this!
great!
Did'nt even fin an maps app that would do that is there any ? All thanks to google,
Didn't maps already have this feature?
Go to settings then labs and enable it (pre cache map area) .
After that, when you press on a location and go to it's details you can download the map for offline viewing.
So all the news is bringing this from lab to a regular feature?

From what I have read on multiple sources I think this will be different from just caching maps.
I think you can have offline maps on your phone permanently. But how much you can download I don't know.
It would be good if it gave you options like for example I decide to go on a holiday to Japan so I would download Japan maps before the trip via my WIFI and once I get back I could delete them to free up the space.
Well, you can do just that with the lab feature.
You can dl maps of areas you want and you can manage those maps or delete them.
The maps it downloads are 10 miles square from the place you choose and you can download alot of those.
Before I go abroad in just dl the country using this and, walla, no need for data roaming when using maps.

Yes, they a vector based. It only has to download once and as you zoom in it recalculates and redraws.
Hopefully the new version allows for you to select larger areas at once, it was a PIA to get the LA area.
Can we use Navigation feauters also with this offline Map?
latest 6.8.1 version doesn`t support offline navigation
wow really good news....

Nice to hear this .. Im waiting this from long time
I have been using this software since January 2013
However, I am posting this now because they have recently updated their software...
Its way, way better than it was before... its a must try
Its a completely Free GPS software that allows you to navigate offline maps
including turn by turn directions for any map in the world... for real...
you just download the map you want to your device and your done!
this means you don't use any data at all while navigating
this goes for walking, bicycling or driving etc...
This is a must-have even if you have an unlimited data plan
for when you make long trips or travel abroad...
It's Called Navmii Navfree... it's available at the play store
You can choose from 2 Different Versions:
1- Navfree USA (For USA, Canada and Mexico)
or
2- Navfree World (For the rest of the world!)
I hope you all enjoy this software as much as I do... Cheers M8s

can we add map to this gps?
It's not fully offline. Only UK users can do offline address search, otherwise you need internet connection. Decent for users with data connection though

I really appreciate your input m8
I am in Toronto Canada
been using it since january 2013...
and I did not have data on my plan till last month...
I was able to navigate offline just by browsing the offline map and tapping a spot
and clicking route here... and it worked amazing completely offline...
but you are correct it won't do an address number search without data
cheers m8
hello to all guys,
as the title I'm looking for an app that can save my initial position and after that to be able to get me back to the starting point. everything only with gps WITHOUT internet connection.
I seek offline because for example my father goes to mushroom in the woods and it often happens that there is no internet connection.
thanks to all
Try locus
sorry but Locus uses internet connection while I don't want any Internet connection, but only GPS.
thank's
other assistance please?

That's partially true: I've just come back from a trip to Oslo where I used all the time Locus Free with offline maps of oslo donwloaded and an imported KML map with points of interest. Worked like a charm!
The only thing you have to do is download maps of the areas you need before using it.
Or u can try navfree from play store work quite good

I'm using both Papago and Sygic.
Papago is more accurate but consume more power. Sygic is less accurate and less power usage.
