Hi all,
Can anyone recommend a high mAh output usb car charger? It has to be one with a detachable USB lead.
The one I have currently takes forever just to charge the device by a 1% increment. It doesn't also seem to provide enough power when for example I have sat-nav/GPS running (the device still drops in battery power).

A charger's specification would never indicate the mAh ( milliamp hour)rating, but would indicate the maximum current it can supply while maintaining an operating voltage (for usb its 5Volts.)
in answer to your question: yes your charger needs to supply more current when you have your Diamond operating and charging at the same time. not all chargers are made equal. some may max out by 500mA, therefore your diamond wont charge at all if its on. as far as I know, most chargers are rated to supply 2A (or 2000mA)
another thing: your diamond uses its own charging circuitry to recharge and maintain its battery. just because a charging adapter says it charges at 1000mAh, i doubt it would actually recharge your battery from 0% capacity to full% capacity in an hour(it just doesnt work that way, and if it did, then your battery could blow up).
as for my own diamond, i seems that it takes around 3-4 hours to get from 0% to full when it is off and using my stock 950mAh.
doing a little math here: 950mAh / 4 hours = ~250mA
therefor in order to recharge your battery, the charging adapter needs to supply 250mA.
but if your diamond is ON and you want to recharge then your charging adapter needs to supply 250mA AND and additional amount of current to maintain your diamonds power.
if youre still able to follow with what im saying here, you may conclude that you just have a DUD charger and you should just buy another one.
as for the other guy who said that a 2Ah charger blew his battery up. I'm a bit skeptical. I think your chargering circuit in your diamond is more likely to fry before blowing a battery up (and if a lithium battery blew up it would have taken out his entire diamond).

By chance, My battery (1800mAH) totally died last night. Put it on car charger and after almost exactly a hours worth of charging, the battery indicated 1% (!) Mind TomTom was running for about 30 minutes of that.
Ok time to buy a new higher rated charger I think. Any recommendations for one with a USB port on it?

i've been looking for one liek that on e-bay as well but i cannot seem to find one. having a detachable usb cord would be nice, but now that i think about it maybe i am better off finding one with a non detachable cable in the event that I dont have a usb cable around.
Yeah, I wouldn't normally mind one with an attached cord but the setup in my car is such that I already have a semi hard wired a usb from a 12v supply and have the [USB] cable hidden then have it pop out near to my car holder.

I was out of the country recently and could NOT get to a charging source. So i was wondering what if i had one of these in my backpack? Would it be safe for my phone or would it mess it up because of the charging output?

Its weird this charger output is 5.5v. Most I've seen are 5v output.
My friend had one from another brand with 5v output no problems.

If it were me....
I wouldn't use that charger if it is pumping out 5.5v. The batteries in the phones are LiPo batteries which need to be charged in a very specific manner. If they are over charge or under charged it can and will do permanent damage. And if the OE charger is 5V i wouldn't risk it.
Don't go cheap when you consider solar/power pack options. You need to consider the power output of the stock usb charger and try to stay as close to those numbers as possible.
I've had a solar panel setup from Brunton for several years and it's excellent quality and provides the power needed via a car cigarette lighter outlet. 6 watts is the lowest output rating I would go (500mA @ 12V). I bought my first one for $106 when the Dell Axim x50v was a new product and even bought a 2nd one (last one moontrail had for $89.95) for my emergency survival pack. Excellent camping/hiking accessory I wouldn't be caught without, especially with power-hungry GPS devices.

I've tried several rechargeable battery packs and had to return them because the only pack I've found that would charge my phones more than once was purchased several years ago, from PPCTechs.com. It cost me $60 (from what I can remember) and is rated @ 4400mAH and charges it at least 3 imes. They don't carry the product anymore...
When it comes to solar power, you're going to have to pay a little more money for reliable products...

so i guess it takes the solar charger virtually forever to charge your phone once
Yeah, generally you want a charger with high output (at least 500 mA) and a high capacity (at least the same as the desire battery, which is 1400 mAh). Once you're sure about those two factors, you're safe.

On a sunny day, I'm able to reach the maximum charge in one day (10-12 hours sun). Note that the output from the solar panel to the powermonkey battery is a lot lower, more like 200 mA. And a full charge should, in theory, give your phone 1 and a half charge. In reality it's more like 1 charge, which is still fine.
It might be a bit more expensive, but it actually works.

the question is: would the 5.5v output "fry" my HTC?
I tried a 3rd party usb power adaptor, which outputs 5.3v as opposed to the genuine HTC adaptor (5.1v) and the phone can't be used while it's charging.
Literally the phone becomes so unresponsive, that it's impossible even just to slide the keylock! The minute I put the phone back onto the genuine HTC usb adaptor, everything works fine and I can use the phone while it's charging.
So here is the second question: has anyone experienced this?

this one looks excelente,like germany tanke.
i dont think thats a good gadget. the usb charger does not load the desire complete full and the accu is really fast empty.... so i dont wanna buy such a gadget.

I lost my wall charger that came with my HP touchpad. The round plug thingie is what I'm looking for. Searching on Amazon brings up a number of items, for example:

However, is there an alternative that works? I was able to use the Evo cable rather than the original HP sync/charge cable that came with the wall charger, but is there an alternative wall plug that works as well? Paying almost $28 for a charging cable seems a bit ridiculous.

I found that Walmart was having a sale on the North American charger with the barrel wall connector for $11.99 and Meritline was having a sale for 6' long USB to micro-usb cables (pair for $4.99 no tax/shipping).
The listing on the Meritline page says that the cables are compatible with the Evo.
Given that the cable that comes with the HP barrel charger is pretty much monkey spit and fails within a month, I found a solution that works for less than $20.

This is because the official charger is at the high end of both voltage and current capability. I charge from laptop, desktop and a variety of Blackberry chargers with no issue, but the available current will determine how long it takes to charge and whether it charges much while the screen is on. Go for a USB charger that gives you 2 Amps and you should be fine.

Thank you for the advice. To be more specific, can you recommend any alternative charging cables/wall charger units specifically?
Any brand name USB charger that gives off 2 amps should be fine. I tend to stay away from really cheap generic chargers. Any microUSB cable should be fine even a generic one if it has decent reviews. I worry about generic chargers since a poorly regulated one could send a voltage too high, but generic cables should be fine.
The chargers I am currently using, as well as the one that came with the TP, are the one that came with a Blackberry Playbook and the one from my HTC Desire HD.
The Blackberry charger gives an error on the screen that it may not charge the TP, but as it gives 2 amps, charges in pretty much the same time as the official unit.
The HTC again gives the warning and takes about twice as long to charge.

I just tested the TP with a charger for the NC, and unfortunately, it still gives the same "may not charge" warning...
There is NO after market charger that will charge at full rate like the HP barrel charger!
At best they will trickle charge at a much lower rate and take considerably longer to charge.
The TP relies on precise signaling which it will only get from the OEM item or specially modded after market units or cables.
Do a google for further info ie webosnation.com forums.
I think your looking for a 5.1v charger, aka rapid charger. This is used by the iPad, and some android phones like the Motorola droid 3, razr and htc rezound.
I could be wrong though,I haven't gotten my touchpad yet.but I do own all said device above (except the razr) and they all use the faster charging technology.

Don't believe all the hype about using ONLY the HP charger, there are many that do the job perfectly well. Too many people make these authoritarian statements and all they do is cause FUD.
At my office, I use the AC charger from my last Samsung phone (mythic) and it works IDENTICALLY to the OEM one. I have also used a Moto and and LG with NO PROBLEMS. I have no issues getting to fully charged in little time.
At home, my OEM cable is plugged into a high-power USB port (2.1A, I believe) and it has no problem charging from near zero to full as well. Front or top-mounted USB ports tend to be 500mA or less, but the rear ones (coming directly off the motherboard) tend to have a higher supply. I also use a non-HP USB cable occasionally and it works fine.
(I got my TP during the original fire-sale and have been charging it these ways ever since with ZERO ISSUES.)

The small voltage difference is marginal and isn't going to matter, the internal hardware should be able to tolerate a few tenths of a volt difference. In fact, I tested my Motorola charger rated at 5.1v and the Touchpad charger rated at 5.2v on a multimeter. The Motorola charger was outputting 5.20v and the Touchpad charger 5.16v. Granted this is at no load, but switching transformers are regulated so they should supply rated voltage at any current draw equal to or less than rated. Also depending on how well the voltage is regulated there may still be a slight AC ripple that the device has to deal with.
Does anyone know the time difference between using the TP charger and a standard droid/blackberry charger? Also curious if the charges last the same. I know theoretically they should since the battery is full either way, but electricals can be tricksiy..

Its all down to the charge rate that the TP is able to draw.
2A which is theoretically possible from TP AC barrel charger would charge the 6A+ battery of the TP from flat to full in approximately 6.5 hours.
If the BB charger were able to have 500mA drawn by the TP then it would fully charge in approximately 26 hours.
The charges would be no different.
To convert any regular USB charger into a TouchPad charger you need to add 2 resistors as per the diagram attached.
The presence of the resistors will trigger the TouchPad to draw the full 2A from the charger rather than the trickle charge it does when they are not there.
Please do not modify a cheap charger that is only rated for 500mA as you will most likely overheat it and it could present a fire risk.

Just pointing out that you need to start with a charger that is rated at least 2Ah to start with.
You can't turn a low rated one into a high rated one.

oh, for the love of gods. REALLY? I was just asking for a replacement cable. I don't want to reinvent the charging paradigm. I just need a simple recommendation for a cable. If a thread could be highjacked any further I don't know how it could be.

well i know that my tbolt cable works. i have to use the tp adapter though. my tbolt adapter makes the touchpad say that the charger is incompatible.

However i was wondering s6 edge plus is not qualcomm based, instead exynos.
I was considering this one.

Technology is same. High Volt, low Ampere. Any QualComm Certified QUick Charger would be compatible with Samsung's Adaptive Fast Charging. Atleast any branded ones, never go for any unheard brands. Thats very good info. Charging technology is evolving with the phones, and thats a very positive start.
The day is not very far when we might have multi thousand mah of battery juice and charging becomes a weekend job.
Do you mind taking notes while charghing 20% of battery with both the qualcomm fast charge, and the regular 2.1amp charger.
I've already placed an order for the Aukey 4.8A / 24W Dual USB Car Charger mainly because of the size. I'd really want a charger that can **** plush within the car's charging port.

Charging isn't a very quantitative process. First 20% of charging would never be same as next 20% of charging. Usually with fast charger, the first 20% would be amazingly fast while the regular 2.1 amp might take upto 1.5 - 2 times the time. Also, assuming two different devices have same sized battery, with the same charger, one might get 70% charged within 30 min while the other can get 80% charged. However, by the end of 100%, both might take similar time. Thats why, the % readings aren't very consistent or dependable. Its approximation. With 2.1 Amp charger, you won't loose much time, trust me. Also, I don't have the facts, but I have noticed that when I do the fast charging, battery drains out marginally quicker than when I charge through regular 2 Amp charger. Thanks that was good info. I've received my 2.1Amp Aukey charger.
I tried it yst evening while commuting back home from work, which is about 20min drive, and the phone was at at 50%, and it was able to charge about 30% in less than 30 mins. Looks promising. I love the form factor. you cannot evne see the charger plugged into the car port. Best of all, the car port's cover covers the entire charger when not charging, this way i dont even have to remove the charger jack every time i have to charge the car, just pluck out the wires, and snap the cover back to conseal the charger.

I tried it yst evening while commuting back home from work, which is about 20min drive, and the phone was at at 50%, and it was able to charge about 30% in less than 30 mins. Looks promising. I love the form factor. you cannot evne see the charger plugged into the car port. With constant gaming and videos watching (after working hours ofcs ), mine doesn't stay beyond a day. I'm very happy with that though. I have seen significant different in battery life when I keep the power saving mode on and it doesn't really impacts my gaming at all even though it says that power saving switches to the 1.5 ghz cores and stays that way...!
