[Q] Help with reinstalling "Talk" - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I used Titanium backup and I removed Talk from my phone. I later realized I am no longer able to respond to gchat as Talk was associated with gchat.
Is there a way I can recover this app? Is there an .apk file somewhere so I can just download it and execute it)
I used this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1025610 and compared my list to one of the poster's list in what items I can safely remove. Does anyone have a better list (maybe with a description of each item) for me to follow and remove bloatware?
I want to get rid of the following items because I dont use them, but I really dont want to screw up my phone anymore. Can someone tell me if the following items are safe to remove:
AllShare
buddies now
Latin input method tutorial (I'm assuming its for lating input usage in which I wont need it?)
Mini Diary
Voice Recorder
Write and go (What is this
Thank you for your time!

So I found three files for talk.apk
gtalkservice, talk, and talkprovider, but all three of them gave me the error application not installed

Did you push to system->app?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA Premium App

lol...you do realize that talk IS gchat, right?
anyway, push the file and install it if you need to. if not, try installing trillian. it is kind of nice because you can have fb on there too and it has minimal battery drain.
if you only want talk, I would say you should take this opportunity to flash a new rom. kh2 was just released

Removing ATT apps

Found a way to delete some of the ATT bloatware if you are rooted. There is an app called titanium backup that lets you delete system apps. It is nice having them all out of my app tray since I'll never pay to use them.

I'm rooted and I have it installed, care to tell how to delete them?
Open the program, you'll get a list of apps and status when you go to backup/restore click on an app and you'll get a bunch of options, including unisntall. This worked great for me.

Yeah, this pretty much sums it up. Don't delete any of the google voice or google talk apps though, as another user mentioned this caused problems for him. (Not 100% sure on the specific apps involved though)
I got rid of all of the ATT ones and haven't had any issues.
Ummmm okay, I open the program, select "Backup/Restore" and it gives me:
Accounts
Application Widgets
Bluetooth Pairings
Country, Language, Time zone
Wi-Fi Access Points
If I select "Application Widgets" I get an option to "Backup!", but "Freeze!" and "Uninstall!" are grayed out. I don't even get a list of installed apps.

You should get a list much longer than that.
Try pressing the problems button at the bottom of the screen and letting it download the "known good version" of busybox. Not sure if this will work, but I did it before doing anything else and everything is working good for me.

looooooove it!!! seems to be running smoother alrady got rid of all that AT&T blotware garbage branded apps lol!!!!
rooting
rooting positively absolutley voids warranty, correct? Also....ANY possible way to remove AT&T bloatware w/ out rooting? I'm prob guessing no.
Thanks for the pointers - I just removed all the AT&T apps and the phone definitely seems to approve as much as I do.

I think you need root....
One of the few apps able to remove the bloatware is the Titanium backups but this one needs root to install.
I think if you have adb/sdk and able to console in, you should be able to uninstall crap like that. Then again i think you need root permissions to access those file.
Don't quote me.
pretty sure there will be an unroot so if thats a concern id wait.
I'm new to the whole android scene. I just rooted my phone and currently have Titanium Backup running doing a backup of Apps + System data. Is that all I need to make sure I have a backup of those AT&T apps should I need/want them back?
I believe it is saving them in a folder called TitaniumBackup. Should I transfer that folder to my pc just in case something happens to that backup on my phone?
Thanks for the list of apps to get rid of as well. Will come in handy.

Sideload Android apps on SGS4G

Ok so you can clearly tell I’m new to the whole Android “tuning” (I guess that what this would be call right? LOL)… And with that said that bring me to the following question.
I have a rooted my cell phone and now I what to load up the stock Samsung apps that for some reason T-Mo (or should I say now AT&T )locked read too… I guess this is a 2 questions in one thread. I have Titanium Backup and I see under Backup/Restore a file named Samsung Apps 1.2.183 from what I seen in the web the Euro SGS have this and have somewhat cool apps like FMRadio.apk , Divx.apk , and so on… So I found a web site that had those .apk files downloaded then and used Sideload Wonder Machine but its give me a failure to install due to a certificate not found something like that anyone have a way I can side load apps? Or how to fix this issue also I want to sideload apps because I want to have stock web browser and get rid of the one T-Mo installed crap bookmarks like E! channel and Yahoo! Crap mail. And also I was wondering if I have the following Gingerbread Launcher r2.apk ,and Gingerbread_Keyboard_2.3.apk what do I delete using TB on my SGS4G to get those working… Thanks for taking a look yall at my thread
Anyone have any ideas that could help me out?
Oh and sorry for bumping my topic up a bit .

email Client Signature "Sent From Tmobile..."

Anyone figured out how to delete it? Every time I erase the 'sent from Tmobile' crap it reverts back.
there should be a signature setting somewhere in the email app
Take it out of your Gmail
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
It does not allow itself to be removed in the regular imap email app. Annoying as hell. If u delete or change the sig it just reverts back to the T-Mobile sig.
Fortunately gmail app doesn't behave that way.
I gotta say that for a "vanilla" Android phone, T-Mobile really dug their nails into it. This ain't no nexus vanilla that's for sure.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
This is happening to me too and it is completely unacceptable. This is happening on my exchange email, I know I can use touchdown but I have to pay for that. This should not be like this.
Would it be possible to get the apk from the Nexus One email client and install it on this phone?
And me. I don't want this T-Mobile signature on my corporate e-mail account. Calling support right now...
Talked to support. After the usual basic steps she looked in the database and said "oh yes, I see others are having the same issue. It would need a software update from Google, and there's no timeframe for that".
Time to get hacking...
IMHO, this is completely unacceptable; I just discovered this today. I can't use this for my work email (we have to put in our own corporate disclaimer) if I can't change the signature. The only tedious work around is to to delete it every time I start a new email/reply and put in some shortcut to insert my actual shortcut. As a former BB owner, this is terrible, and this phone is going back to t-mobile right now. Might be time to bite the bullet and just switch to Verizon and the droid pro. Sigh.
Yes it's a stupid bug for sure. Glad I already paid for touchdown.
If you don't want to pay for Touchdown, there are others as good if not better than Touchdown for free. Just look for them.
Fixed the issue by replacing the email.apk file with the one from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775007
Can you tell me how you did this. I have tried to install the apk but it fails.
1) End the task of your existing one and click delete data/cache in manage applications.
2) Use Root Explorer and rename the old one in system\app to email.apk.old / make a backup of it
3) Copy the new one to system\app and click install
Thanks so much. No more signature! I was really bummed out about this one, but now all is good.
ahh, glad the directions worked. I had to work from memory as I initially tried the Gingerbread email.apk file and had to do a bunch of delete, uninstall, delete motions to get the one linked above to work.
No - the default Gingerbread version does not work. I believe the one above is based on the 2.3 code and does work. The black back ground is a lot nicer than the grey that the default client had.
This is the default email client and may work better for people that don't want to bypass Exchange security policies:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1041962
Awesome thanks...now I dont have to ask T-Mobile for a monthly fee for the advertising my emails were providing.
This is total crap!
How did you guys get around to renaming the original file? When I try it says insufficient permission. Looks like it is a read only file and am unable to change it.
You need root access.

I have tested and confirmed that these are safe to remove. I also did multiple factory reses with zero issues. Now go out and remove all that bloatware.
I am not responsible for anything that you choose to do to your device. This is just a guide nothing more. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
I am just dumb founded by the amount of bull sh*t in the stock Rom. The amount of bloatware in this should be against the law. I will tell you this much. Once i removed this junk my phone is much snappier. Have fun with it guys. Always do a nandroid before removing anything.

I'd like to add SWM-C to the list. I have no idea what it does, but I didn't need it running, so I trashed it.
You can also add "Tmobile Name ID" to the list if you don't use or want T-Mobile's for-pay Caller ID service.
ECID.apk is T-Mobile name id.

While we're at it, you can look Here to see some others that have been found to be safe to remove.
I personally keep some of the ones on both of these threads, but that doesn't mean they can't be removed.
Also, i've removed the genius app and had no troubles with the system running fine.

This list I made does not affect the full functionality of the stock ROM. You can remove other stuff BUT you WILL get FCs to vital system files. Stick with this list. I'm much more conservative then that guy you linked me to. But I will add dockpanel.apk. thanx

Much appreciated. Wasn't sure what dockpanel was, and hadn't gotten to axing that one yet in testing.
I guess that means i'm stuck with latitude, since I need Google Maps, but since carhome isn't "supposed" to work with our device according to Google, once it's gone it's toast.
I mentioned earlier that I un-installed the Genius app, tossing carhome gets rid of the rest of that silly talk stuff I can't stand. It's a danged touch device for a reason...lol.
I realize different things work for different people - my buddy loves the talking to it to make it do stuff, just not my thing.
But I need Maps because the feature of emailing places to people has become invaluable in a business sense for me.
We all use Maps, and as people need to be places we just email locations back and forth - someone simply clicks the link in their email and it plots it on the map, and then Navigation automatically computes driving directions.
Auto-sync with email notifies of the new location ready to be input, and you can share the location right from starting in the Maps app itself. When a person gets a new location to go to, they send that and their current to payroll - and their mileage is logged and compensation is computed before they even get to where they are going.
Score a point for Google making my work life much, much easier, and streamlining taxes and payroll.
Edit - i'm the guy I linked you to - another lol.
That thread was a group effort we undertook here to find out what all you could get rid of and still have the system run right. On my working install I use in my day-to-day on the phone, I have a lot of the apps I mentioned were safe to remove in the thread I linked to.
When we first got root on these phones, the day revolutionary was released, it was an all-out delete-fest to figure out what could be safely removed. Some people went ahead and froze things, others went ahead and just uninstalled them. By comparing notes and tinkering with it, we figured out most of what we could toss safely.
Like I said, I use some of the things mentioned to be deleted - but the focus of the thread was what could be removed, and not what personal preferences were.
When i'm doing all my GPS / A-GPS testing, for instance, I restore to my original CWM backup I made right after root and do all my testing with all the stock apps installed. I don't want to contaminate any of the tests by running a custom tweaked install, the only thing i'm trying to tweak in that instance is the GPS stuff i'm working with at the moment. I'm also trying to replicate the environment someone will be in out-of-the-box (or as close as can be since the phone is rooted with CWM installed).
Don't think that I run my phone on the daily with nothing on it - that would be silly and kinda pointless to have a smart phone that didn't do anything. But in the interest of discovery, you kinda have to go beyond what you're happy with to figure it all out. (or at least that makes the most sense to me)
Having tested software for a living for a while...just the habits I got into. Another reason why I go so overboard on backups. You should see all the CWM backups I have stored of this phone in different states.
Just wanted to clear up any confusion, in case you thought I was crazy about trying to rip everything out of the phone indiscriminately - there is a method to the madness (...or is it a madness to the method? Can never tell... )
The things listed that you can delete in the other thread are a pick-and-choose option, you don't have to remove them all.
Using ES File Explorer...
Can't seem to delete anything .... says that it can't be deleted.
Do we need to be S-Off first?
If so, how do we S-Off for Mac users?
There isn't too much clear detailed info for Mac users...frustrating..

There is no Mac version of the Revolutionary S-OFF method. You either have to (A) install Linux, configure it properly and run the Linux version of Revolutionary or (B) install Windows, configure it properly and run the Windows version of Revolutionary.
Your only other option is to wait patiently for HTC to provide a bootloader unlocker for this device which may or may not ever happen. They've released it for the T-Mobile Sensation, but that's a pure HTC phone and not a T-Mobile-branded myTouch model.
I've used Revolutionary on Windows and Linux and both methods are fairly straightforward. You just need to know what you're doing -- if you don't, you probably shouldn't be trying to attain S-OFF in the first place. Just use the permanent temp-root.
maps keeps automatically running in the background of my gf's phone. Is there anyway to stop it from autostarting? I've uninstalled it and reinstalled it as noted in another post elsewhere in this forum.

In another thread here, someone also found out that by un-installing the stock Google maps version, then re-downloading it from the market, you solve the problem of it running in the background all the time. Check the battery threads to find the specific posting, I forget which one it was in.
Glad to see we are coming up with all the little details here, everyone has a different approach to solving the problems we come across on this phone. Everyone sharing what they know here is starting to paint a pretty good picture of the whole situation - good job everyone!
(Yep, I know car home works on the device, but once you remove it you won't be able to re-download it from the market because Google has it listed as not working for this phone, so it will block the download - thanks for confirming from another phone that it is indeed working though.)
Exactly.

[Q] Finally made the jump to CM7 201 from stock 2.3.3, have a few questions

don't know why I waited so long... but here are a few questions I have:
1) it doesnt seem like I have google video chat I thought it came in 2.3.4? I might have restored the old talk binary from my titanium backup in which case do u guys know where I can get the apk?
2) under settings, status, about my phone number is showing as unknown. Did I screw up something?
3) it looks like the clock app bundled with cm7 only carries simple ringtones for the alarm, is there a way to put in some melodies?
4) my work email exchange account puts a restriction whereby I need a security pin on every unlock anyway to get around that?
5) Noticed that the 4G icon is only showing H, is that the same?
thanks CM7 fTW!!!

1) If you go on the cyanogenmod.com website, you should be able to find it along with Google apps. It's a separate download and will need to be flashed separately.
2) No mess up. Just put it back in.
3) You can simply put a folder hierarchy in your internal or external memory like this and put any alarm tones in the folder. It'll show up when you want to select an alarm. It should look like this:
ringtones/alarms/alarm1.ogg
4) No idea, sorry.
5) Same thing, no worries.
thx!
