[Q] Help for a noob please :[ - Verizon Droid Charge

Thanks for clicking on this thread.
I am on stock EE4 and wish to put the newest GB leak on the phone.
I just have a question because all these guides I see on rooting the phone show people putting Altered Beast on it or something. I just want to make sure I can flash right to the newest leak and not have to be rooted before I do so.
New to Odin and have been watching many guides and reading many threads about getting my Flash on. [teehee] (Came from DX and thought 1clickroots were easy.)
Thanks in advance. Just making sure so I don't end up with a brick.

yes you can just flash the leak in ODIN. No need to flash anything first.

to get to EP1H just use odin and flash it right over your stock EE4.. if you want the latest EP1Q then odin it over the other EP1H leak

[Q] How to unroot UTB JH2?

Hey all,
Not that i want to, but i was wondering how if possible, to unroot the samsung captivate. I got it rooted and installed the JH2 rom, but i don't know how to revert if i can.
I see the odin one click downloader to go back to the stock rom, but i don't know if that will unroot and make my phone as it was.
I would also like to know if i'm rooted and running the jh2 rom, what would happen if i click the reset button in the privacy menu of the settings.
It's called a one click tool for a reason. It reverts you entirely back to the original "out of the box" feeling. I'm pretty sure even att or samsung could figure out it had a different rom on it.
Also, rooting and flashing a rom are not the same thing

Hey thanks for the reply.
I know that rooting and flashing a rom are not the same thing which is why i was confused about that one click tool. I was unsure if it would just revert a rom and not a root or if it would do both.
Thanks for the clarification.

Odin will perform a full flash of whatever ROM (the one-click just happens to do JF6 for AT&T) you want. This will replace everything, including partitioning even (that's what the .pit file is, if memory serves). Basically, I'd be willing to believe if you were to use Odin with the JF6 ROM and drop it off at AT&T, they would be none the wiser. You can also, of course, use this tool to flash the i9000 ROMs with our captivate kernel (buggy at best) or even use the new JH2 ROM (as you obviously know by saying you're on JH2).
A factory reset will only put you back to "factory" settings, I don't even know if it will restore missing AT&T apps, but I doubt it. But it will keep you on your current ROM. So factory reset on JH2 will keep you on JH2, while flashing with the one-click tool on JH2 will put you on JF6. Sorry if this is repetitive and long-winded, but I figured any additional clarification for others couldn't hurt
Edit: I should also add there IS a way to unroot somewhere on this forum, too lazy to do the search right now. There's a one-click root/unroot that I believe SHOULD work with JH2.

Haha, i had to read this a couple times but i learned more in that post than i ever knew about these phones. I thank you for that. This definitely clarified allot of questions that i probably would have plagued the forums with.

(Q) Bootloaders?

I have search the infuse threads and cant find anything on this subject. I just got a infuse and im coming from a captivate. My question is, if im on stock froyo do i have to have gingerbread bootloaders to odin flash one of leaked gingerbread builds or can i just odin flash a build straight from froyo? I would appreciate the help.
the last 4 leaks contain bootloaders. also the Rogers based custom kernels have a rainbow fix and work with the froyo bootloaders.
Thanks for the help. I did a little more research and got everything i need. Im used to flashing the hell out of my captivate and i didn't want to jump right in with the infuse and brick it. I was just trying to be cautious. I bricked my captivate the first week i had it and didnt want a repeat of that.

you wont brick it. maybe get boot loops but this phone is practically unbrickable. the captivate had bricking issues because people like deisgngears thought it was a good idea do flash sbl.bin through cwm and not package it with boot.bin(3button fix). samsung is also responsible because many of the firmwares they leaked contained sbl.bin and not boot.bin(i9010 armani captivate). they also had several bootloader builds that for no apparent reason were not compatible. the infuse doesnt have those factors. also the bootloaders seem to be signed to the device which prevented us from flashing rogers bootloaders. from what i gathered from threads by gtg there may be a bootloader backup system on a spare partition that prevents bad flashes and restores the last bootloaders if the wrong bootloaders get flashed.
That is extremely helpful. I have read that there alot of issues with all of the leaks so i dont know if I will do anything with it or not. I like to flash roms but i also like a stable phone. The way i am ill end up flashing something anyway and just deal with whatever the problem is. Thanks again

[Q] Noob Samsung infuse questions

I used Odin to update my Samsung Infuse 4G to gingerbread (Build Number - GINGERBREAD.UCKL2). I want to take it off (which I don't know how to do) and go about rooting it so that I can put cyanogenmod 7 on it.
Can someone tell me 1) how to remove gingerbread and go back to stock (is there any way outside of pressing factory reset on my phone? isn't there a way to do this through odin?) and 2) how to go about rooting and getting cyanogenmod 7?
thanks
Can't you just root it with gingerbread on it? I would just leave it on instead of downgrading and root it that way. Follow the link below, under "Unlocking and Rooting" you should see a written tutorial and a video guide to root. After you're done rooting, go to "Custom Roms", pick a ROM of your choice and follow the directions posted in their thread.

custom ROM updates
Ok, so here are my super duper nooby questions:
1. If I flash a custom ROM, do I have to keep checking here to see if there is an update, or will it go through or notify me on its own?
2. I have stock rooted UCLB3 now. Can I just wipe and flash R3V via CWM or do I have to return to original stock froyo first?
3. The whole reason I'm changing is b/c youtube all of a sudden won't work and it's pissing me off. I've searched the forums, tried all the suggestions that I can, and nothing is working. And it's not just youtube - it's my Facebook vids too. Unacceptable. Anyway, will flashing a different ROM fix it? I know it could potentially, but what about probably? I don't want to restore my **** if it's gonna restore the original problem I'm trying to fix. Thoughts?
Thanks for all the awesomeness this forum and dev's work provides.

I'm not an expert, but I think your problem is pretty clear. You flashed a rooted stock rom B3. If you read the post that you downloaded it from, I think you will see that it contains a non-stock kernel in order to enable the rooting to occur. The OP states that you must flash the stock kernel back in order to regain video. I don't think this is something for noobs, so thus far I have avoided it and used ROMs that are already rooted and fixed with video enabled.
One possibility is that "video" in the posts only refers to taking video with the camera, but I'm guessing there's a high chance what I said was right.
Custom ROMs won't typically notify you that there is a new version available. That's what xda is for.
Always go from stock if you want to have the least chance for problems. I use gtg's ultimate unbrick.

My bad. I didn't say that I was rooted to begin with and used the rooted B3 from here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1508619.html And that my video has been working for a week or more, but just stopped working today. Thanks for your reply!
I'm basically only a notch up from complete noob here.
But if you have device-specific questions, it's strongly preferred you pose them in the device-specific subforums (for Infuse: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1158).

Custom ROMs don't have OTA updates or update notifications. You'll have to keep checking.

If it's as you say, stock UCLB3 rooted and with CWM, you're g2g. No need to flash stock froyo.

I wish I could tell you. I can't. But, I would take a completely uneducated guess and say it probably will make those things work.
EDIT: VVV With reference to the below, I was going to point that out, but I thought you were already aware of this
Hopefully that'll fix your issue.
*slaps forehead with hand*
How could I have missed the part in all caps that clearly addresses my issue:
TO GET VIDEO BACK UNZIP ZIMAGE_UCLB3.ZIP AND FLASH WITH SGS KERNEL FLASHER. BE SURE TO DISABLE VOODOO LAGFIX FIRST!
DOWNLOAD STOCK KERNEL HERE:

I feel like an idiot. I'm gonna try that. Sorry and thank you! I'll let you know if it doesn't work.

You should use the search function of the forum. All of the questions you asked have been discussed many times and I find it hard to believe that you looked because many of the questions you asked are stickied or are still on the first page. I'm telling you this because there is a lot of information to cover on your questions (many of them could possibly have several different answers) and the easiest way for you to get all of the information you need is to look at what people have already said and done. There is even a "One Stop Shop ICS" thread that is stickied in the DEV section. Nope, I can't believe you even tried...but good luck and read as much as you can. Short-cuts will only get you a bricked phone.
well i have read alot and i think that may be my problem. i have read alot on android 4.0.3 and i have found info that the nexus got it first and this update is way different for the skyrocket. like the user interface is way different. cant seem to find a straight answer on it as people seem to be split on the user interface. thats why i wanted someone who has actually installed it to kinda point me in the right direction on some of my questions. i dont mind reading info but im new to this sight and am just figuring out how to search for info on xda. typing questions in google has gotten me only more confused. ive had good luck on xda in the past and trust the info on this site above any other. if you could copy and paste some links i dont mind doing my own reasearch as a matter of fact i had rather that way i can download what i need as i go..... thanks
ok i found the all things ics forum you were talking about so im gonna read all that info and if i still have any questions ill come back and ask. if anyone has any links to info they feel might help feel free to post them. also if you know of any better ics roms than this leaked one for the skyrocket feel free to post links on those. thanks for pointing me in the right direction now maybe i can find enough info to make up my mind on whether to flash this rom or wait for a better one or the official release.. thanks again...

Start from the top and work your way down. If you have an I727 I would definately only research ICS on the I727 and not any other phone. As you said, they are different. You will also find that there are no 100% answers on a lot of your questions. What works on one phone might act a little different on another. That is why it is better to read and be prepared...just in case.

If you use the "Odin" version (One click Odin with the ICS leak) you will need to put cwm back on your phone via Odin. If you use cwm to install one of the custom ROMS you will retain cwm. Directions on how to put cwm back on your phone can be found in the "DEV" section. If you use the ODIN method you will need to re-root anyway, I prefer Copperhed's method...again, found in the "DEV" section. Good luck.
cwm

Do not try to flash TAR files through CWM. Only ZIP files (approved for flashing with cwm) can be flashed via CWM. TAR files are for ODIN. I suggest you learn more about the differences before trying anything. There are very direct and clear directions for all of this in the different XDA skyrocket sections (mostly in the "DEV" section). Do yourself a favor and take a week or two to do some reading and learning. Good luck.
reasearch
from all the reading i been doing all day from the everything ics forum its best to flash the odin one click first then flash cwm again and install your choice of custom roms [zip files] since im on gingerbread now. something with the modem and radio is giving alot of problems unless you flash the odin one click first. im gonna take your advice and do alot more reading before i decide. i had a captivate before i got the skyrocket and flashed many different versions thru odin on it but have never flashed a rom with cwm before. so odin or heimdall is not new too me just cwm. but now that i found out about cwm and the way it can backup roms ill never be without it again. its kinda like having life insurance it there if i screw up lol.. thanks for helping me and if i run across anything else im not sure about ill ask cause its better to ask than to mess it all up... ill let you know what i decide and how it turns out... thanks again
Well I made up my mind and flashed the odin one click leaked update of ics. Then used odin to flash clockwork mod and used cwm to then root and make a backup of ics just in case. I restored my apps and data using titanium backup and never lost any data not even on the games I play. Oh and if anyone is wondering this ics update flashing cwm and rooting did not trip the flash counter none of it did. From what I read the flash counter only moves when a custom rom is flashed and this was not a custom rom but a leaked version of stock rom to come. Also flashing cwm does not trip the counter cause you are only flashing a recovery image and not a custom rom and the root didn't cause you are not flashing anything using this method... thanks to all for the help I could not have done this without those who pointed me in the right direction..

I am so lost

Just got an Infuse a few days ago. It was running froyo 2.2.1 I believe. It was on AT&T, but I wanted to unlock to use with StraightTalk on AT&T. I did get the unlock code and rooted it. I then upgraded it thru Samsung's site to the 2.3.6 Gingerbread. In the process of this, I managed to lock up my laptop when installing Kies and had all kinds of issues. Needless to say, my persistance paid off after spending several hours reading here. Got it all up and working on ST.
Since today was my day off, I decided I wanted to remove the AT&T bloatware from it so off to googleville again and ended up here. Started reading and then found that when I did the Gingerbread update, my phone was unrooted again. Needless to say, after reading around here all day, I decided I wanted to give ICS a try and have been reading about ParanoidAndroid. I am now on pg 31 of 62 and am getting nowhere fast.
I don't want to ask for spoonfeeding, but I am confused about alot of this coding stuff. I have had some flashing experience years ago in ....well, don't guess I want to mention that, but anyhow, it seemed overwhelming until I got my feet wet in it. I have to say, this GB bootloaders, Aroma, non-Aroma, cm7, cm9, red CWM, and blue CWM has me more confused than a fat kid in a candy shop in some foreign country.
In all honesty, I think I could read here for a week and still not be sure on which way I need to go. As I said, I am interested in ICS (ParanoidAndroid) but don't know if I have the GB bootloaders or not and not sure where to start at. The firmware version os showing 2.3.6, Baseband I997UCLB3, Kernal version 2.6.35.7-I997UCLB3-CL977492, and finally a Build of Gingerbread.UCLB3. Yesterday, I was using SuperOneClick and 010 editor. Now I am reading about Odin, Heimdall, and several other programs that I don't know which to start with.
Could somebody please help out this fat kid in a foreign candy shop? I don't even think I can find a Hershey bar. Thanks.
How did you get to gb?
Kies?
Odin?

This method will give you the gb boot loaders.
Your next step is to flash a custom kernel.
Follow my signature links to the heimdall method of kernel flashing.
If you are more comfortable with odin, jscott has made some great packages also.
Once you have flash the kernel, just boot into cwm and go from there. If you wanted paranoid, then flash the ROM in cwm.
If you use a gb kernel, for now, it will be red letter.
If you use heimdall jt ics kernel, you will see blue letter.
I rec the jt kernel as you are planning to go ics
Gl
edit:
this is the ics kernel I was referring to:

flash in download mode.
boot into cwm -3 fingers technique - flash the ics rom you want - follow the OP instructions
