[Q] Android Update with root? - HTC Sensation

Hi,
I'm new to this area and therefore I have a question.
Today I opened the bootloader of my HTC sensation and Rooted.
Then I noticed that an Android update from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 is available.
Can I just install this update? If after updating anything be different?
I do not want a Custom ROM.
Thanks!

Wanted to aks the same question, maybe a little bit more specific: Will the update make the Revolution-Hack impossible?

From what I read some peoples locked. What i suggest is that you flash cwm then a custom ROM that's 2.3.4 and problem solved.
I would recommend insert coin.
Edit: missed the don't want a custom ROM part. Well I still suggest it. I mean you already voided your warranty so what do u have to lose?
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App

Just install a custom ROM. You're already rooted. I don't understand the complete lack of logic people have. "I completely unlocked my device, and now I'm going to stay with the bare minimum ****ty stock ROM!"

Whoa, speak for yourself dudes! Stock ROM is better than any others, in MY opinion as well as many others. Just because you dont like the stock ROM (or a custom), doesnt make it worthless. My phone is likely just as fast as your ROM phone. So how bout you lighten up? My choice to stay with stock ROM is quite logical. I am happy with the ROOT apps that I am running, along with ADW EX, so I dont need any custom ROM.
Also, what does he have to lose? How about turning a shiny sensation into a brick if something goes wrong?
How has he voided his warranty? Getting back to S-On is doable now. So yea, pushing ROMs isnt very diplomatic of you, especially if he doesnt want one.
Also, I think that revolution may be updated now for the 2.3.4 people. Youll need to look into that if you want to be perm rooted with 2.3.4
Matt

Theres no way your stock rom is faster than insert coin or any other rom for that matter. Whats really the point of rooting if your not going to flash a rom eventually. I can understand for a little while keeping stock rom. Like i kept mine stock until there was an update. But after that you really dont have much choice unless you want to take the chance of breaking root or htc locking you out of bootloader again. Your choice. But the most logical thing you could do is find a good custom rom that has the upgrade you want. But dont sit there and say your stock rom is better or even close to better than roms these devs work day and night to make. Cause we all know thats garbage. Also its not flashing roms that brick your phone. Its getting s-off and flashing radios or new bootloaders. Youve already took the chance of bricking your phone. Your at the easy part now!!!! Flash a damn rom!!!! Do a nandroid backup so if you dont like it you can go back to your beloved stock rom.

Hahah, you are kidding me right? So, how is yours faster? How is mine faster? What the hell do you even mean by FASTER? Faster at what?
And WHOA...Just because a dev worked day and night on something, doesnt make it better. That mentality needs to come to a complete stop, cuz in the real world, no one gives a crap about your team spirit. Show them WHY its better. WHAT it does better. You sound like a teenager.
All a ROM is, is a customization of one's phone. So I customized mine, ON MY OWN? That doesnt discount what I have done, nor make it any better or any worse than yours.
Whats the point in rooting? How about being able to run TB or Root Explorer, or Adfree? Shall I go on? Do you really expect to change my, or anyone's, mind based on your reasons? And lets not forget you calling my feelings garbage.
Which do you want to be today, the pot or the kettle?
All those that pushed a ROM, FAILED the OP. He SPECIFICALLY asked NOT for a custom ROM. Go away if you cannot help him with his request, because there are others here that can.
Matt

Heated much?
Insertcoin is faster than stock and if u say it isn't u obviously haven't tried it. And u can't brick ur phone without being completely stupid. Xda has great support with instructions to help.
There was a chance of you bricking ur phone with revolutionary so i don't understand that why you would be worried about bricking with cwm.
I acknowledged that he didn't want a custom ROM but i did suggest it. It would save him some trouble in the future.
There are also stock roms that have just been optimized and what not.

Whoa there, chill out. I asked for an explanation as to WHAT a particular ROM was faster at. I didnt claim to have the fastest setup. And again, you guys need to define "fast". WHAT is fast about the ROM?
Matt

Why dont you click on the link that he gave you and read whats fast about the rom. Instead of being rude to people that are trying to help you.

Thanks.
And I'm talking in terms of UI fluidity. And how fast the phone responds to your actions. Stock ROM can't touch a custom ROM.
And i am calm, I'm clarifying my point so the op can make the best decision.

i agree with the OP.
Currently I am happy with the stock rom, it does all I need, I like the fact that I CAN DECIDE when/if I change to a custom rom.
I am using the Sensation with the OTA update to 2.3.4 and I got my root and S-OFF thanks to the wonderful people at revolution
I just wanted s-off and root in order to use Titanium backup

Bingo!
It is everyone else pushing ROMs that are the ones being rude! Not us! Just because we dont want to flash one of your ROMs doesnt make us rude, or illogical. So stop that crap!
Its no different than the SGS2 people coming on here telling us their samsung is better. If we want a ROM, we know where to go. Deal?
Arguing over which ROM is best, is beating a dead horse. The OP didnt ask anything about a custom ROM, yet he had it shoved down his throat. You guys treat it like its your Religion or something. Sheesh!
To the OP-Doesnt it feel nice now, to know you can choose what apps run in your phone? I was so excited the first time I watched those bloat apps STOP!
Matt

Matt, ur points are valid but ur killing ur credibility by ranting. Turn the flame down and make your point without all the aggression and you'll get better results.

Can you please tell me why you continue to post telling people to use ROM manager? I know that you have used it, but there is no official release of CWM (FOR SGS4G models) inside of ROM Manager yet. Additionally, Edify is the current standard for CWM 3.x.x not Amend so why are you pointing people to use zip's not following edify scripting.
Furthermore, do you really have any proof that KC1 (AN UNRELEASED BUILD from Samsung) is MORE stable than the KD1 WHICH WAS released?
Again for people who just take your word and then mess up their phone it's not helpful.

There's no reason to be enthusiastic over a bad solution such as the one proposed in the OP.
My point for commenting wasn't to not be enthusiastic, the point is THIS PROCEDURE may work for the author, but it's not the recommended nor the proper way to use CWM. It's not the CWM designed for this device.
So pardon me to rain on the parade, preventing users from doing something to mess up their device.

Thank you for your comment. I'm a noob. I've been reading and rereading everything in our forum and to tell you the truth I'm am getting confused.
I definitely need the correct, easiest and simplest method. Not because I'm lazy. I'm just a brand new noob and if I screw up my phone I'm in real trouble.
I barely know the basics but I'm itching to mod my phone. I'm missing all the fun! Lol.
All this dialog concerning our current developments and different methods may be annoying to some of the more knowledgable but to a noob like me it is very informative.
Thank you all for your input.

My first post was also towards the OP. I'm tired of seeing the blind lead the blind. It only leads to "I bricked my phone, HELP!" threads. I guess I was a little tired last night and didn't articulate my thought properly. I am only on this forum because I own the device and I try to help the actual devs (all 3 of them for this device) and also have current information on progress for this device. I'm not here to be led by the blind. Not saying that you are one of the ones who is blind because I really don't know you. either way I am not at all enthusiastic over this so called solution at all... I used odin to update my device the proper way as I have been using odin well over a year now. Which it seems to some makes ME a "rook" lol Ignorance is bliss... must be a Obama supporter too I bet.

You only need the first page - the rest is just random posts.
Google 'flash a custom ROM on Android' to get more info on the actual flashing procedure but I wouldn't do ANYTHING until you understand what it is you're doing
If you need to ask if you need to flash a certain rom then the answer is NO, you do not need to flash.
There's a learning curve on how to do it, and do it correctly, learning how to go back to stock, and also upkeep of the rom (flashing everytime it's updated)
What's wrong with your phone right now that you want to put a ROM?
Don't feel like you need to put a ROM just because other people are doing it.
Your rooted and S-off already right?
I flashed my tmobile to revolution hd the first day I got it. This site is really helpful with all its guides. I did the whole thing in less then 24 hours and before this phone I knew next to nothing about android an s-off etc. If you read the guides properly I dont think its possible for you to screw up.
P.S I use mine in Canada with mobilicity, but I am guessing u r with tmobile.
Have to ask, but why did you root your phone? Did you actually have a reason to or did you do cause everyone else did and it 'looked cool'?
I'm not having a go but rooting actually isn't needed. The Sensation out the box is a great handset. The ONLY reason I did was to remove the bloat I don't use (including most of HTC's widgets). If HTC were to release a phone that allowed this without root I'd have no reason to - even if I could

Im not going to lie but i did it cause everyone else was doing it and seemed like the thing to do... Since doing that I have actually learned a lot... Its the greatest thing when you can take a phone and COMPLETELY make it your own from the rom that you have on there to the splash screen and the boot and down animation... Knowing its there because thats what YOU want there not what HTC or your carrier wants there is the greatest gift... Its YOURS.
See, there you go. Not a good example for a 'should I root' question
Fair enough, you've learnt now but you'd look like a bit of a tit if you'd bricked your phone without knowing how to reverse it.
Word to the OP - READ EVERYTHING
Do not attempt to do anything until you know what you're doing. OK, there are some things you can only learn having done a few things but for the most part build up your confidence by understanding everything the guide(s) tell you
I agree with mr. burglar I did it because of all the modification options. I just like things different. If I could change the rom in my toaster I would.
Well I have had a fair amount of experience jailbreaking iphones... I know that its nothing like rooting a droid... I did not root blindly either... I came about doing myself cause I did some research I saw that the evo was being rooted and they said it was the same for the Sensation... I found a really great detailed video in two parts on you tube of how to do this step by step so there was going to be no error... Not only that there are lots of people on craigslist i could have paid to root... I took the chance... well no some a chance but I was certain that I would have no problems with doing this it was a 15 minute or so journey that came out just fine
I wanted to try flashing my Rom because I have read that after flashing with android revolution made their phone faster and battery last longer.

well cant argue against trimming the extra fat which is kinda slowing down the phone. Nothing like a lean mean calling machine.
Without root, you can't get rid of Sense. CM7 is so fast! Add a Faux kernel and see everyone else including the SGSII in the rearview mirror.
This was the video that i used to root my HTC Sensation... The video is for the Evo 3d but it also works for Sensation too... Watch first and decide wether or not you want to proceed

i rooted my phone just to get rid of the bloatware. i like play around with the stock rom first than move on to a custom rom.
if you are serious about rooting i sugest you read the guide several times before you continue. if you have any questions there are many here that will help you. i also like to add that it would be a good idea to check what rom you are using now and download the .ruu for it and keep it in a safe place. i have seen several questions here of someone trying to return their phone back to stock for warranty, exchange, or what ever reason they want to return back to stock but they dont know what rom they had before flashing. so download this ruu first before trying to flash a different rom. it will save you the hastle.

I rooted it for myself to use and I must say it's probably the smoothest gingerbread experience for our phones since all the custom roms are built on dhd base or our buggy gingerbread update.
Okay I'm not a sense fan and still on absolution 3.7 imo its the best rom for our phones but I just was making sure... I think my phones being duped(hacked) so I can't really say if the texts I'm getting are correct or just fakes lol. XD I have traces set up and such in my phone to see if I'm getting mixed stuff xD but thanks guys

How did you root the update. I had rooted 2.3.3 and now I have 2.3.5 update from AT&T. Totoally removed everything back to square one. I used ACE kit before and it wanted to uninstall and take me back. I like the new ROM, better all around.

Thanks. I will be looking into your suggestion
I am a newbee no doubt to this world and an old man from Walla2 living in Chicago area now since 76. I will do as you have suggested....and check out the dsixda kitchen. I do develope, but it is on iSeries systems for back office. This has been fun as well as an eye opener what they do with smart phones.....wife has the iPhone 4s and hates it....but with 17mo left no doubt will convert her over to Android.
My wife got the notice for the update but the phone never connects to upgrade server. It's never been rooted.

This happened a few times on my wifes phone before it actually updated. She never rooted either. Just keep trying once every 24 hours. It will start eventually.

I got that message this morning. I did the update. Now my phone won't stop resetting. Nothing works any longer. Please help if anyone can. I wish it was back to the way it was before the update.

It's normal to keep resetting a bunch during the upgrade. But if it finished and let you into Rom and is resetting then something went wrong. You aren't bricked though so I will tell you how to fix it. Just to be sure, I am assuming you are not s-off since the update actually ran. If you are s-off then just flash cwm through hack kit and install different Rom. If s-on do this. First from a pc download and install HTC sync and make sure it's running. Download the new ruu from HTC to your computer. Now take the battery out of phone. Put battery back making sure not to press the power on accident. Now with battery in hold volume down and tap power button while still holding volume down. You should enter hboot. Select fastboot and plug phone into pc. You will see fastboot USB on phone. Now from the pc run the ruu update and follow the prompts until finished. This will leave you at new stock with no data except what's on sd card.

It sounds like you have some app is conflicting. Figure out the exact app, and clear data for that.

An app doesn't cause the issues he is having. Apps force close themselves not the whole system. He can't even use the phone long enough to remove apps anyways.
Okay this is a fyi , i have been trying to do the AT&T update via WiFi all weekend, and got the the server busy message, so i tried again, same issue, then i turned on my data and WiFi , then i was able to download the update... it is down loading as we speak.

You have to be on WiFi for it to download. They took out the function of doing it over mobile network with the last Rom update. So if anyone else is having issues be sure WiFi is connected.

You asked about updating and what the mounts should look like. If you are aready rooted and using CWM then just skip to the part that explains wiping and installing.

so i am safe to just install the rom then

What are you trying to do? Install a new ROM? I'm guessing you have a custom ROM already but want to change it to another custom ROM? When you say safe, safe from what? Can you please elaborate?

And just to proove I'm not being a total ****
You can switch to any Rom from a custom Rom as long as the firmware base is the same.
Always wipe all data and cache factory reset before flashing a new Rom unless specified in the Rom that there is no wipe needed.
Never restore data with titanium backup when changing Roma it can cause conflicts and crashes.

As someone said lady GET AN I PHONE! I have never told someone that ,but I've never come across someone so unsuited to a rooted phone.
You are driving pple crazy who are trying to help !!!!
Custom roms are not for everyone. You can't expect others to read your mind ,or answer every single tiny point. Go and learn. Go and find info. It takes time and effort to pick the skills up. Its not hard but you have to put the effort in if you expect others to spend time helping you !

Roms are like clothes for our phones. You dress according to the enviorment in which you will be around. We canot tell you what combintion is the best. It totaly depends on you. Invest time in finding out what rom offers you what you need. Honestly... in my own personal opinion, there is no rom besides glorious overdose that worth installing. Half of what the other roms offer cause glitches in the rom.. and are themed... something you can do yourself. I appreciate the work done on this phone and to the devs currently deving for this phone, kudos. Let's go byond the "impossible" and make this phone a bit more exciting. Cause deving isn't for fame. Its for the thrill of having the chance to creat something someone somewhere will enjoy.

At this time last year, I was anxiously awaiting GOV. There were others but I only trusted ayoteddy at the time. After some time, I tried others and always went back to GOV.
I do these roms because after using root uninstaller to customize it my way, I figured that I should learn how to do this myself.
My roms will never be like GOV....it is perfection. I just do this to occupy my time. I am a recovering alcoholic and this has been sort of like a hobby for me.
My list of fave roms include GOV, GenericGinger, ICS Domination, Clean Fusion (Although now it cannot play YouTube within the web browser) and TouchMIUIwiz.

Custom bootloader??? Nowhere in that process do you get a custom bootloader
But really though, Loki will suffice for now...and its incredible that Dan was able to find the exploit and utilize it...
But, we do still need to worry about bootloaders...for the sake of future s4 owners...sure we have something that works now, but what about the people who buy the phone a couple months from now? It's something that should always be looked into just for the Saks of future patches
I'm not bashing Dan here...take note I gave him a compliment...just trying to explain why some are still worrying about the bootloader - for us current owners nothing to worry about, its just the possibility that future owners may not be able to use this...
And yes, even future exploit may/will get patched...so its just a cat and mouse game were playing, hopefully att isn't going to get to into keeping the bootloader locked...and who knows, maybe they never will bother to patch Loki...only time will tell

Actually now that Dan has released the exploit and satisfied the masses, it seems like he is diving head first into a more solid bootloader solution. Along with the satisfying part, it seems to have stopped the idiots from posting in the R&D thread when they were not supposed to be, hindering development. Either way, as expected, development is taking off full force and a new exploit will be found in time. Hopefully before they patch the current one so when they do, we can just give carriers the bird and boot unlock the same day bwahahaha
Well My Thoughts

The AT&T Guys as well as the Verizon Guys know that enough stuff goes wrong in the most normal times.. so in my humble opinion they can not lock these devices down where as the masses of company techs are unable to fix their own $hit such as resetting downgrading etc... The big companies have to fix their stock units, nuff said!! (remember thats just my opinion..)
Dude he's got a valid point. Thanks to Dan and numerous other devs who have Loki'd their work, I've got TWRP, a nandroid, and Faux's kernel. On a device with a locked bootloader. All in less than 24 hours since Dan released his exploit. That's incredible, and saying "thank you" just doesn't seem like enough.
As far as future S4 owners, the same badass peeps are working on a permanent unlock. People with lives besides XDA, and families too.
But in the meantime, if you've got an AT&T or Verizon S4 and you wanna flash stuff, you've got not a dang thing to complain about.

What do I have now?
Is it that my bootloader is unlocked? I keep seeing "loki" mentioned everywhere.....
I'm coming from an s3. Once I had cmw I could flash roms.
Now on the s4 I have twrp. Can I flash roms at my leisure?

If you have twrp, you can only flash roms with the loki patch. You may also flash a t-mobile rom without the loki patch as long as you also flash a loki patched kernel before rebooting.
I got approved for an upgrade from AT&T even though I got a Note 2 with an upgrade last November, they are even giving it to me for $174. However I will for sure be flashing AOSP on it, my concern is, once a new version of Android comes out, and new bootloaders are required(4.3, 5.0) what are we going to do then? If we want to run any future version of android that require new bootloaders we are kinda screwed. So not only are future buyers in jeopardy of not being able to run custom firmwares, the current user-base who can take advantage of Dan's exploit may not be able to update to future versions of Android unless they want to run stock Samsung TouchWiz.
