Did you by any chance try to put your phone to vibrate and test the camera? I'm not sure if it works the same when your bootloader and ROM is locked and stock, but as much as I know, I have CyanogenMod 7 (rooted and unlocked) and there is no camera shutter sound when I put my phone to vibrate state.

Im on CM7 and if i put my phone on silent there is no camera sound, never been able to find the option to turn sounds off through a menu

Yeah i have CyanogenMod 7 me too. And yes when I put my phone to vibrate it's soundless. But I want the camera soundless all the time, why should I want it to sound? I think it's stupid.
I hope there will come a setting for this in CyanogenMod in the near future
If somebody knows how to fix please tell!

Remove camera_click.ogg
I renamed the file to camera_click.ogg.old for testing purpose (because I don't want to remove the sound) and the shutter sound is no longer active.
Hope it helped!

when the phone is in silent mode, the sound is gone.

The Nexus S isn't really a phone to phone :(

I don't know if it is my fault, but the screen doesn't stay black until phoning, so i always hit the "mute", "hang up" or "hold" button on the screen with my face, very annoying.
any suggestions?

CM 7.0.1 was said to have a proximity sensor bug, I wonder if the ROM you are using is related to this? I don't know much about the ROM you are using though, so I might be talking non-sense.

So your problem could be the ROM you are using.
Try stock.
Alternatively you could have a bum phone (bad proximity sensor)

I honestly think its either a bad flash or you might of accidentally messed with the setting. Go to the dialer and while on the dialer press the menu key and you should see a list of settings. Scroll down until you see the setting about screen time out while on a call.

when i go to the dialer and tap the menu button and select settings, i get a settingmenu, but the headline is "contact" the subheadline is "telephone" normal?
i just have two settings under the normal settings and "call settings" which could have something to do with the screenproblem and that are (sry i translate them german ^^) "always approach sensor" (on) and "screen always on" (off)

[Q] Low in-call (handset) volume on Nexus S after OTA update to 4.0.4

Updated my Nexus S from Gingerbread to ICS 4.0.4 (OTA), but ever since then, the incall handset volume has been extremely low - so low that I can't even hear the person on the other end if I'm outside of any 'quiet' (library quiet) room. Has anyone else experienced this as well?
Any ideas on how I can fix this? I've read that the app "Volume +" might be a solution, but I would need to root the device and its also not a guarantee. Would love to hear from someone who has had this problem and how they rectified it...
Couple of details:
- Carrier: Rogers (in Canada)
- OS: ICS 4.0.4
- NOT Rooted
- Samsung Nexus S
Thanks a lot!

Volume+ won't fix your in call volume, believe me. So don't go that route, you'll only waste your time. The Nexus S has always had a very low volume, but I didn't notice a change from 2.3.7 to 4.0.4 to be frank.

Thanks for the heads up. If you didn't notice a change, then I'm wondering why I did. Do you think its worth it to re-install 4.0.4?
Do you know of any workaround to have this resolved if I did root it?

I find it strange myself. If you look around you'll see the internet is littered with "complaints" regarding the Nexus S low volume, dating back to the Gingerbread day too. I'm not sure a re-install of 4.0.4 will help you.
I have never really found a workaround to increase the in call volume, so if anyone knows I'd be interested too. Rooted or not, I don't mind.

It's a known "issue" though, the Nexus S always had a very low in call volume compared to many other phones. It's not absolutely inaubdible, but it's definitely not your Nokia brick either. In a crowded place it gets difficult to hear, even with your ear pressed firmly against it. The speaker however does decently, but then everyone can hear your conversation.

More than once. The radio signal has little to do with the volume however.

Notifications through Headphones

I really hate that when i have headphones in, or speakers, the phone still makes the sound for a notification.
I found this tasker script that SHOULD do it, but i can't get it to work.

If you have a kernel that supports Voodoo Sound, what you can do is install the Voodoo Sound app and enable the "Don't interrupt music" setting. That setting puts your phone on silent whenever you have headphones plugged in. Super convenient

Ok, so it sounds like this might make for a neat libaudio/SGS4GParts hack for this kind of functionality.

You're right. It is probably something super easy.
But, I am unemployed. I have a wife and daughter, and limited time to even look at my sgs4g.
When I do stuff, I get a bunch done in a little time frame. Probably about 5 hours a week.
The rest of the time, I'm trying to get a job, interviewing, dealing with rejection, taking my daughter to the playground, figuring out how I'm going to pay my bigger bills, etc...
You could always bone up and learn some C and go look at the wm8994 driver and libaudio in the device tree and fix it yourself. I know hampsterblade did it once, and we happily merged his change!

(Mod) Enable/Disable shutter sound option in camera (how to)

I used and found this mod in the Sprints Galaxy S3 forum. I did not see this posted here so I wanted to share this. I take no credit for this. This was done by Freeza and by s3.Zeke.
What you have to do is use an app like root explorer and change the following lines in /system/csc/feature.xml
Edit the following:
<CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>false</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
Change the "false" to true. Save the changes and exit.
Reboot your phone and now you can toggle if you want shutter sound in options.
Remember you have to reboot your phone or it will not show up.

An easier way, for me was:
Open Root Explorer
Navigate to System>media>audio>ui
Mount R/W
Scroll down to 'Shutter.ogg'
Rename to 'Shutter.ogg.bak'
Profit!
I've done this on both stock and Beans B14. I haven't tried it on AOSP, so the file structure may be different, but the idea is the same. (The file was called 'Camera_shutter.ogg' on the Thunderbolt.)

While this idea turns the sound off, you have to go through all the steps to change it every time. The OP's way allows you to toggle it on and off inside the camera's options. So you wouldn't need to go through all the steps every time you want to turn it on or off.

That's crazy. So Verizon actually removed that option with the update? I can't even think of anyway that would benefit them. I can confirm the T-Mobile version still has it on the latest update. Bizarre.

Thanks for this, works great on MA2! Just a note, make sure you properly set permissions of the saved feature.xml file. ES typically created a backup of the original file, and doesn't properly set permissions on the new edit, and this mid won't work until you correct that.

Weird clicking sound in camera when focusing

After updating to JB, i am hearing a weird sound when the camera is focusing. It doesn't happen when i was still in ICS. The camera produces a clicking sound (usually paired by 2 clicks after touching the screen for it to focus). Do you guys think it's a hardware issue? I was wondering coz this only happen when i updated to JB..
Sent from my HTC One S4 using xda-developers app
Mine does that too. Always did. So did my old HTC nexus one. It seems to be the auto focus module. Some times mine ticks loud but usually it's faint. It shouldn't be a hardware issue of your camera auto focuses.
Sent from my HTC One S using xda app-developers app
But i only start to hear that when i updated my phone to JB. I've never heard that ticking sound when i was on ics 4.0.4.. nevertheless, it's just the sound that is troubling me. With the camera app itself and the quality of the pictures taken, i don't have any issues.. i'm just afraid that the update has something to do with that ticking sound..
Sent from my HTC One S4 using xda-developers app
Are u guys with s4 Jb update facing this issue of sound coming from earpiece instead of rear speakers after the Jb update?
Like for example when someone calls u, sometimes the sound of ringtone comes from the earpiece instead of rear speakers?
Even if u make some video with camera and then watch it, the recorded sound comes from earpiece. Did u check it?
It is an issue with some S3 phones after Jb update. Wanted to confirm r S4 phones (with JB update) facing the same issue?

A possible FIX. This may not be the correct way to fix it, but should work anyways. Get a Root Browser, go into system/media/audio/ui and replace camera_focus.ogg. Make sure to set the files permission to 755. I found an online converter that converts most sound files to .ogg, it has to be an .ogg file, with permissions 755.
Hope this helps

Hello there!
Well this is weird but mine does click since the first snap. And it was ics then...
It seems it depends on a certain device. I didn't have it before but after changing my mobo in service, the sound appeared. On ics. And it only sounds on auto focus. Manually focusing there is silence.
Sent from my HTC One S using xda app-developers app
It's probably just JB using a different focusing mechanism than ICS which perhaps causes the lens to move more thus resulting in a more audible click noise. As long as it functions fine and takes focused pictures I wouldn't worry about it.
Always had this noise, only in auto focus though. It's disappeared on CM10.1, and I can't say how happy I am at that.
