Gmail SUCKS on Status? - HTC ChaCha

Hi,
Went to AT&T today to get a Status but decided to play with it first. I have a Legend and absolutely despise it for all its flaws and need a keyboard.
I went into the Gmail app and was appalled by about 2 lines worth of text? The top was filled with oversized gmail icons and the bottom ditto but with some buttons. Add in the status bar and there's virtually no room for the actual email.
Can this be fixed somehow or do you all just live with it?
I don't understand why no manufacturer dares making a premium candybar qwerty/blackberry killer. Except for the Motorola Pro which is huge there really isn't anything viable. I had my hopes up for the Status, let's see what Q4 brings.

did u tried changing the text size thru setting?

Yeah, put it at tiniest and it was still useless since the reply and delete menus were oversized. Have you tried?

You're right the gmail app is poor. Top row of stuff way too big.
K9 mail is better, but not as simple sadly
Sent from my HTC ChaCha A810e using Tapatalk

yeah, its really annoying.
i had try htc mail, but its not simple as gmail.
anyone has solution ?

I've gotten used to it.

The gmail app has been updated, you can now choose to turn off the toolbar at the top and stop it from scrolling down the page

Nice, does it work better now? Screenshot?

The update did improve things a lot. The upper bar scrolls out of the way, so theres more reading area.

which version has the "good" version of gmail ?
i have here installed the v 2.3.4.1 ... where is the better version ?
cheers, Peter

That's the one.

Meh... I'm still not that happy with the GMail app on ChaCha.. I have set up the IMAP account on the standard Mail application and that is way better (from my point of view).
Give it a try if you want.

new is v 2.3.5, is shows more text on the screen ...
it works good but other notify tools not more working with 2.3.5

Menu>More>Settings>General Preferences>Message Actions> select only show in portrait or dont show.
BR
Gmail v2.3.5

Still using Mail app instead of GMail. Mail gives you enough settings and preferences that makes it more powerful than GMail app.

Good SMS app

I know about handcent and chomp, but what other options are there?
I'm after something a bit different, with a good popup and inbox that doesn't look so..iphone like?

That's all you get really. And you do know Handcent has option to change EVERYTHING right? It doesn't have to be iPhone-y.
I do believe I've seen some other options on the market...but they didn't look too inviting to me, for whatever reason, at the time.
If you're considering apps that don't actually function as the app for your messaging, I use an SMS app that I enjoy and find helpful.
SMS Backup + will backup all your Text Messages to your gMail account under a label SMS. Here's the AppBrain link:

Yeah, I used to use it, but reverted back to stock after a while. Not sure why, but haven't really liked either option.
Just tried goSMS.. seems pretty good.. again, iphone style, but I like this one for some reason... Will see how it goes
I use SMS composer. Its free in the market, simple to use and the only non-threade SMS app I could find. Its only 500-600 kb, so less resource hungry also. Its also buggy but usable.
I still prefer threaded. The standard SMS app is good, it's threaded, but it doesn't look like i'm reading a comic.
Now I remember the reason I stopped using handcent.. It became very slow after a while to get into the inbox etc.

I've also noticed that. But I deal with it cause the stock app was much worse for me.

Give Gosms a try. It seems to be much faster so far, and i've got a reasonable amount of sms's in my inbox right now.
em,I really preffer to GO SMS,not just because its simple UI style, but also it can give me some other feels.Good!
I also tried GOSms , it seems nice, the UI,contacts and speed is better than handcent, it runs smoothly for me till now. Keep an eye on it.
Seems to have a problem with notifications.. Doesn't always play the full notification ringtone
But other than that, I like it
Yeah, for its lighter, beautiful popup window, search, contact, and even the new smileys, I will Support it!!
Have you tried PingChat? It's available on iPhone, Blackberry and on Android.

That's not SMS. That's more or less another instant messaging service like AIM, Yahoo, or Windows Live.
I tried Go SMS also and like the looks, speed and small overhead compared to Handcent (which I use since I had my HTC Legend, about 7 months or so).
Problem with Go SMS, it FC's all the time for me. Sometimes every 5 minutes, without any activitiy. It just runs in the background and I receive the crash message and can make an error report.
There is nothing happening when it crashes, no SMS coming or going. When it's in the foreground it usually doesn't crash, but it's pretty unusable for me at this point. And the neon bubble colors hurt my eyes, they need to change those or give coloring options.

Honestly GO-Sms is pretty solid I will admit that it's buggy but it's still being improved so theres plenty of room for improvement. Once the app stats to mature I think it will be nearly unstoppable.
Until then im sticking with handcent ...

Any good phonebook apps?

Hi Guys,
Is there any good phonebooks apps around? i dont like the stock 2.1 on my Sony Xperia. Something that has good UI and looks really nice themes. I tried Phonebooks 2.0 which is ok but is there something else better?
thanks
You could try this:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.youlu
Dang, I saw the title and was just about to post that but you beat me to it Haha.
I really like Contapps.
The best thing about it, is that you can manually link contacts with their Facebook and Twitter accounts.
So, if you have a friend called Robert Smith, but his Facebook screen-name is "Bob Smith"; you can manually attach the contacts.
It also has handwriting recognition. You just draw a letter S with your finger on the screen, and the bottom of the screen opens up like a chalkboard. The recognition gets better the more you use it.
It'll also add Facebook profile photos to your phone's contacts. Once a contact's linked, just long-press on the small profile-pic icon on the right of the Facebook window.
It's completely amazing. I use it as my main phonebook now.
Go Contacts is a great app

Any Calendar APP with Hi-res support?

I used to use "Jorte" on my Samsung i9000 phone which work pretty good.
But when I use it on transformer. I found it didn't use the advantage of the
Hi-res. Still the same layout but streched to full screen.
Unlike the tablet version of evernote and catch, which is re-layout properly.
Is there any calendar APP with tablet version support? You can refer to iPad's
calendar and you will know what I mean.

+1 here, this is something I'm looking for also
Just out of curiosity, what does the built-in calendar app not do that you want it to?

I'm not sure about the OP, but the calendar app widget built-in to HC only shows a week out. Jorte gives a few weeks, potentially a month, in a handy little widget. But on tablets it is too small to use.
I use touch calendar. The resolution doesn't get stretched as Jorte
the calendar from Samsung tab seems nice. Any chance to extract it?
Check the screenshot.

Try out Pocket Informant:

I use Wizz widget's calender widget, it has several different size calenders, including monthly one.

+1 wizz widgets and the stock calendar work quite well for me.
Wizz seems like it will be my choice too, at least for now. I wish Jorte would update or Cozi would support google calendars.

I use pure grid calendar. no stretch cause it has tablet support
I might check it out, looks good. I wish there were a ad-supported version, if only just to check it out.
Not a fan how the agenda and calendar widgets are charged for separately.
Try Business Calendar. It's fantastic and offers great widgets too!
I've tried both pocket informant and jorte.. must say Business Calendar is much better, even than both combined
/offtopic : What i dislike is the fact that my backspace-key seems to delete 2 characters in stead of one. (dn't notice earlier, so I guess it's only on this forum?? That, plus I keep touching the touchpad when I type on the keyboard
+1 pure grid calendar widget. I use it in week mode and month view mode in two diferents widgets. It works great for me.

What keyboard are you using? If using an aftermarket keyboard, sometimes mine (Tablet Keyboard on TF and Swiftkey on phone) will weird out a bit, so I have to restart.
I'm pretty content with Tablet Keyboard or whatever it's called.
It has the prediction of Swiftkey that I love so dearly, but I won't buy SK out of spite. No need to charge a second time simply for a port, but I digress. Tablet Keyboard is free =P

[App] Email 2.3.4 w/o exchange PIN requirement

Here's an email app from CM7 that I have edited to remove the requirement for a pin to unlock when using an exchange account. I am not a developer, I simply followed the instructions found in numerous other threads. I am posting this because I couldn't find an updated version anywhere else that actually has user definable account colors working. I also changed the app icon and notification icon to a blue version of the standard icon. This app works great for me on CM7 and I have used older versions of this on Sense roms in the past. Give it a try if you hate the exchange PIN requirement. Be sure to make a backup first as always. Just flash the zip through recovery. It will say that it requires device admin as usual during initial account setup, just hit OK to continue. It should skip past enabling the PIN.
works great for me! Thanks. I'm running IceCream sense. The default email app (I guess Sense 1'0) works okay, but I like having the check boxes fOr multiple selection and being able to add a custom notification. I never use the sense email widget, so no loss there. The only thing I miss is the unread counter on the icon. Cool!

Awesome love the black background, the colored accounts, and the combined inbox. Thanks.
Glad you guys like it, I was beginning to wonder if anyone else was going to use it.

Calender widget results in Sense FC

So, I´ve been having the S for almost a week now.
I have the fullscreen calender list widget on a homescreen. And so far everything ran as it should. But yesterday Sense crashed while I was scrolling to that screen.
And since then I seem not be able to get it running as it was before.
Here is what I tried:
- Reboot (of course)
- Remove and add the widget again
- Remove the widget and place it on another homescreen
But the only thing that seems to be working is not showing all used calenders.
So, I suppose it might have somehting to do with the amount of entries in those calenders. Maybe too many or something.
Anyone else has that problem or know a solution?
I've had that in the beginning.
I'm now with the HTC for ~3 weeks and am connected to exchange, Facebook & Google calendars.
I didn't do anything to overcome this so it might be related to some kind of a "broken" meeting in one of those.
Try choosing only one at a time and then scroll and see if it works. if it does continue to add one by one to narrow the problematic one.
Sorry, forgot to mention that.
I can view every single one without any problem.
But when I view all of them together, Sense FCs.
Right now I am viewing all calenders but the weeknumber one.
Just to make things clear for me:
I'm using the agenda widget of there sense, is it the same with you?
Have you tried the Android one vs. The sense one?

the calendar widget is buggy.
I don't use it anymore since it makes my device to freeze.
I guess we need to wait for an upgrade from htc.
Try resizing it. When it crashes go back to screen that contains widget and quickly put finger on it as though you are going to delete widget. You should now get arrows allowing you to resize. Make the widget smaller. If it is then stable, resize back to full screen again.

but again, I used to have it too, but now it's gone, so I suspect it's related to a broken entry in the calendar and not necessarily the application itself.

Holy cow! That really did work!
Well, at least it´s not instantly FCing. So, let´s see if the problem will come back.
Thank you very much.
Yeah the calendar widget is buggy for me also. Resizing did not helped. I ended up using ICS calendar widget..
Happened to me on day one. You can remove the screen in the helicopter mode and then just readd it again.
HTC should really release an update.

Until there is an update available you might use Business Calendar: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=netgenius.bizcal
I installed the update today, Software numer 1.78.401.2 and so far it seems the issue has been resolved. Haven't tested it for very long yet, but previously it would crash within one minute. I'll report back after at least a full day of use.
Update: The calendar widget hasn't crashed once since I installed the update so I can confirm the issue has been fixed.
