Good SMS app - Android Apps and Games

I know about handcent and chomp, but what other options are there?
I'm after something a bit different, with a good popup and inbox that doesn't look so..iphone like?

That's all you get really. And you do know Handcent has option to change EVERYTHING right? It doesn't have to be iPhone-y.

I do believe I've seen some other options on the market...but they didn't look too inviting to me, for whatever reason, at the time.
If you're considering apps that don't actually function as the app for your messaging, I use an SMS app that I enjoy and find helpful.
SMS Backup + will backup all your Text Messages to your gMail account under a label SMS. Here's the AppBrain link:

Yeah, I used to use it, but reverted back to stock after a while. Not sure why, but haven't really liked either option.

Just tried goSMS.. seems pretty good.. again, iphone style, but I like this one for some reason... Will see how it goes

I use SMS composer. Its free in the market, simple to use and the only non-threade SMS app I could find. Its only 500-600 kb, so less resource hungry also. Its also buggy but usable.

I still prefer threaded. The standard SMS app is good, it's threaded, but it doesn't look like i'm reading a comic.
Now I remember the reason I stopped using handcent.. It became very slow after a while to get into the inbox etc.

I've also noticed that. But I deal with it cause the stock app was much worse for me.

Give Gosms a try. It seems to be much faster so far, and i've got a reasonable amount of sms's in my inbox right now.

em,I really preffer to GO SMS,not just because its simple UI style, but also it can give me some other feels.Good!

I also tried GOSms , it seems nice, the UI,contacts and speed is better than handcent, it runs smoothly for me till now. Keep an eye on it.

Seems to have a problem with notifications.. Doesn't always play the full notification ringtone
But other than that, I like it

Yeah, for its lighter, beautiful popup window, search, contact, and even the new smileys, I will Support it!!

Have you tried PingChat? It's available on iPhone, Blackberry and on Android.

That's not SMS. That's more or less another instant messaging service like AIM, Yahoo, or Windows Live.

I tried Go SMS also and like the looks, speed and small overhead compared to Handcent (which I use since I had my HTC Legend, about 7 months or so).
Problem with Go SMS, it FC's all the time for me. Sometimes every 5 minutes, without any activitiy. It just runs in the background and I receive the crash message and can make an error report.
There is nothing happening when it crashes, no SMS coming or going. When it's in the foreground it usually doesn't crash, but it's pretty unusable for me at this point. And the neon bubble colors hurt my eyes, they need to change those or give coloring options.

Honestly GO-Sms is pretty solid I will admit that it's buggy but it's still being improved so theres plenty of room for improvement. Once the app stats to mature I think it will be nearly unstoppable.
Until then im sticking with handcent ...

Hero 2.1 Mms.apk is so slow...and I think I know why

Just to start off the problem I am having is prevalent in all 2.1 stock sense hero roms. There is so much keyboard lag in the sense messaging app that it is pretty much useless. You really can't type the way you want too. Considering I use my phone pretty much for text messaging and music, this has destroyed my opinion of the phone. Sprint was so excited about this phone and gave up on it within 7 months. Considering all contracts last for 2 years (if you want the good upgrade prices), don't you think it would be the ethical thing to do to keep a phone updated for at least that duration. This is a $500 dollar phone that can't text message correctly.
Alright after my ranting now down to the problem. I feel like the #/160 character counter right above the send button is the issue causing the terrible keyboard lag. I rarely do texts over 160 characters so I really don't need this. I remember back in the day of my touch diamond, there was an .xml mod you could do to eliminate the character counter which sped up the texting perfectly. I have no idea how to go through all the .xml's and .pngs of the apks but I figured someone in here could help. Basically I want the character counter to be removed to see if this is the problem. I do have only prediction on, no vibrate or sound, and it still lags out of control. It happens on every sense rom I've tried (and trust me I've tried them all). This does not happen in any of the AOSP based roms such as Cyanogen and Aospmod with the stock android Mms.apk, where there is no character counter. I tried pushing that to my phone an I like it but it just doesn't match up with the rest of the sense, plus it doesn't have the message counter option on the icon which i really like. I pretty much came to this conclusion when i used both of Zen's ports, Aria and MT3G, and I had absolutely no lag when texting. Both roms have different framework i understand which doesn't allow me to push either of the MMs.apk's from either of these roms to my hero stock 2.1. I am using IcedHoneyBun with Zens' any rom Kernel right now but it happened in NfinitiFX's rom too. ONCE AGAIN I NEVER USE VIBRATE OR SOUND so please don't mention that as a fix.
I am posting the Mms.apk below. If somebody can help me I would be glad to donate.
you might want to post this on android central, Beezy420 build icedhoneybun, and he might be able to fix it for you. Although i blieve hes mostly developing for EVO now, he is still around. Post in his honeybun thread.

I know beezy built it but it has nothing to do with the rom. It has everything to do with the stock sense Mms.apk. More hero users use xda than any other site thats why i posted it here.
I *highly* doubt that a simple character counter is causing the delay. First of all, that only makes sense if the keyboard is *completely* lag-free in all other "known-good" apps.
Handcent's text messaging app also has a character count... have you tried that app?
Can you type without any lag in a basic notepad application? Make sure you have all of the same auto-correction and spelling options enabled.
HTC MMS is laggy as hell!!! This isn't "the fix" but it should help somewhat. Turn off ur notifications and auto-retrieve in stock MMS then go into your stock app manager under settings~~>manage apps and force stop Messaging. Now download either Handcent or Chomp from the market cuz they r pretty much the same. Then remove the stock messaging shortcut from your desktop if u have one just so it's outta your way. A good portion of the lag should be gone. Clocking ur cpu higher if u use a clockable kernel will help reduce keyboard lag too.

I mean my keyboard is lag free in any other application except ones that require per letter searching such as google search. I just feel like getting rid of the character counter would help a great deal just because you are absorbing a but of memory after ever letter you type. I really don't know what is the cause. I don't like chomp or handcent i've tried them both. Not as much lag but there is still some lag. I just wanted to see if this was the problem and then go from there.
I would love for someone to pull the counter out of the HTC mms app. I will also gladly donate.
...still willing to donate...
Not possible. I'm using a GSM port of the Legend 2.1 build, and there is no 160 count at all, and it runs no better/worse than the older one. (The only reason it loads faster is because I'm using Zen's Any Kernel)

Except, this doesn't make much sense. MMaybe I haven't used a CDMA ROM in a while, but I distinctly remember the HTC Messaging app always being a bit sluggish.
You should try swype its great and quick as hell! =]
Has nothing to do with what you are saying. My brother has a Droid Eris with the same messaging app and its flawless. Maybe ours will get fixed in the update rolling out

Best sms app

Sorry , not sure if this good here. But which sms app is better in your opinion: Go SMS pro, or Handcent (don't know if that's spelled right)
I reluctantly say Handcent, but only because I hate the delete confirmation dialog in GoSMS. If I could turn that off like in Handcent I'd probably say GoSMS is quicker and cleaner.
I used and like go sms pro. It looked really clean, and I liked that you could have it display inbox/outbox also so you could quickly find texts you sent recently, etc. I didn't use that feature much but it was cool to have it.
I've been using Handcent for some time now...I would say Handcent but I also haven't tried GoSMS in a while (didn't like it before, but has changed a lot since then)

SMS preference

I don't see too many poll threads on which sms client you use... I would love if you left a reason you chose the one you do.
I use GO SMS pro because of the simplicity of it and the way the pop up looks. I actually prefer CHOMP sms pop up UI, but it lags and just isn't close to running as smoothly as GO sms Pro.
Also, if you want to post a screen shot of the theme you're using if you're happy with your theme!
Handcent > Go sms. You can text without unlocking screen with handcent. You have to unlock the screen for go sms.
Idk how much I would use that, but I am interested in that. What theme do you use?
Handcent because of being able to reply from the lockscreen without unlocking the phone.
Wow a lot more people use handcent than I realized. What theme do you use?
Stock Sense app, on InsertCoin 2.2. Nice and simple
I use stock. Never liked other apps.

I use Handcent, probably because it offers so many more options over the stock Sense app but probably because of habit also. I don't like pop-ups because of privacy issues and the Handcent seems to work the best for me.
I use GoSMS Pro. I tried Handcent for a while but I found Go to be smoother. They're almost identical in terms of features. However, Go lets you backup your texts for free. Helpful when flashing different ROMs.
i use iphone theme on Handcent with modifications.
I used to use Handcent until it started acting stupid. It worked fine & then all of a sudden started resending texts on every reboot, not sending texts properly(showed a spinning icon next to every message), etc. Now I use GoSms & I love it. All the features of Handcent with none of the bugs. The only thing I miss is the Handcent ringtone picker.
Im using an aosp mms app xboarder ported, working fine for me.
I'm surprised on how many people use stock. It doesn't offer enough features for me. I agree that handcent use to be better, but GO SMS pro has surpassed it in my opinion on the mere fact that it isn't buggy and looks a lot cleaner.
Also, its interesting no one uses Chomp SMS. Especailly if you ever use the iphone theme, chomp sms looks just like it. I loved BITEsms on my jailbroken iphone I used to have.
Used to use Chomp, now go.
just prefer the look of the stock sms app, especially when themed.

Yeah i love GoSMS's built in SMS and settings backup, i used to use only handcent but stopped mainly for that reason.
I hate stock messaging app i try i use it but get sick of it and switch. I hate the lack of customization.
I do wish, however, that text messages would still pop up on the lockscreen when using any other messaging apps

ICS compatible Messaging app?

I'm really sick of the inability to turn off the emoticons in the stock SMS app. Are there any good messaging apps on the market that DON'T pop up the dumb "menu" softkey? That is really annoying.
I've tried Android 4 ICS Messaging but it just seems really buggy, it crashes while using MMS and last time I tried it, it kept duplicating incoming SMS.
Any suggestions?

our first OTA update should fix the menu softkey just like the One S received. do you hate the emoticons because they look extremely goofy? you're not alone there. as soon as we attain root, i'll be throwing in the new ICS Android ones to replace them. not sure why they thought these looked appealing. we just all have to be a little patient.
I don't want to replace them, I want to get rid of them. Hopefully that will be an option

The contacts kind of suck...

Is there a way to get the contacts back to a more "stock android" feel? The touchwiz format just seems inefficient and the call/ text buttons are just too small... the whoel thing seems like a giant waste of screen space!
I agree, the dialer/contact app is a big piece of junk on touchwiz.
I would recommend just using a different app, which you can easily install from the market. I really love exDialer - I just downloaded it a few days ago and I feel it works really well and looks much better than the regular dialer.
There are many apps for this, a popular one being Go! Contacts, but I found exDialer to be the best looking out of all of them. Start-up time is also very fast, which is important!
I felt the same way until I learned swipe contact from left to right to call and from right to left to send txt.

Yeah I agree. exDialer is based off of MIUI's dialer and it's the best. It also uses the same framework for it's contacts app (it comes with the dialer app when you download from play store).
But does anybody actually use the contact app? I love the smart find on the dialer so I never really have to use the contact app for anything.
