So I will try to organize this thread so most important stuff (request) is on top, and my rant/explanation of why I want this done will follow. Warning: I know I tend to use a lot of run-on sentences...I'm just long winded
Attached are two stock (I presume) .apk's that I pulled out of Cyanogen's ROM that I have installed on my stock 2.1 ROM. I prefer these two apps vs. the HTC versions, but each have one small issue.
1) - DeskClock.apk will FC if you hit the Music shortcut. I am assuming that this is something simple, like it's trying to call up the wrong program? Can this be written to launch the HTC Music App, hopefully eliminating the FC?
2) - Gallery3D will FC if you try to launch the camera from within the app. I am once again assuming (more hoping, really) that it's trying to launch a camera app that doesn't exist in the stock ROM. Can this be written to launch the HTC Camera app, hopefully eliminating the FC?
I would try myself, but after downloading and installing Eclipse, JRE and the Android plug-in, I still feel like this is over my head at this point, as all I have is very limited Visual Basic experience. Would someone mind doing me a favor and updating those apps are reposting them in this thread so that myself and other like me can use those on our stock 2.1 ROMs? It would be much appreciated
Now for the rant:
I see a lot of people with differing opinions on HTC's Sense. Personally, this is my first Android phone, and I have found that I actually like SOME of the Sense apps. I dont really have a problem with the launcher (though I have replaeced it with ADW.Launcher), and I feel that apps such as People, Camera, and Phone are somewhat superior to what I presume are the stock Contacts, Camera and Phone apps, respectively. And then I wonder why HTC created some of the other apps they did that seem somewhat....lacking.
1) The "Photos" app is very boring and plain. I mean, I appreciate the Flickr and Facebook integration (which would be useful IF I used them), but why could they not have just added this functionality to the already awesome 3D Gallery? I would rather use the stock Gallery app, and even though the file I attached (see:Gallery3D.apk) doesn't have a functioning camera botton, I still prefer it to the Photo app. Plus, it pulls in my Picasa photo albums
2) The DeskClock app HTC included on the incredible is fine for the most part, but I don't like the small clock font and the fact that it takes FOREVER to launch, whereas the stock DeskClock.apk is instant to load, has a much larger font, and does other things I like better; like keeping my wallpaper visible, and is softer to the eye. Once again, I appreciate the added features of HTC's clock (Worldclock, Stopwatch, Timer), but I don't use them enough to make me like this program more than the stock one.
So that is why I am asking for those to be edited so they'll run on my stock ROM. At least until we start seeing some FroYo love
Also, if anybody knows, why did HTC replace the Messages app with one that exchanges the ability to set conversation limits (e.g. 200 messages, then auto delete) with one that uses Facebook for contact icons? I still use the HTC Messages app cause I like the pictures transferring over from Facebook (or the People app, which is updated by Facebook, and hence why the People app I like BETTER than stock), but why leave out any message bulk control? Anything over two or three hundred and my phone really starts taking a long time to open the conversation...
Alternately, once CyanogenMod's ROM becomes more stable, I would love to switch to it if I could bring some of the Sense apps along. Those would be:
1) People - with fully functioning updates and photo shortcuts to Facebook and Flickr
2) Camera - I like the added features...and the fact that it already supports 8MP, whereas (as of CM5.0.8 Test1, anyway), the camera app would only do 3MP
3) Phone - again, with correctly synchronizing contact pictures and speed dial, just like in our stock ROM.
I haven't actually tried pulling these out of the stock ROM and installing them in CM5, but I'm assuming I'd run into issues with the Facebook/Flickr sync...

attached is a gallery apk that doesn't have the camera issue. and also I attached the stock music apk that is need for deskclock.
Anything from Sense requires the htc framework which you are not going to find in any Cyanogen or vanilla ROM and there is no work around.
The vanilla DeskClock apk (with working music button) and 3D Gallery (with working camera button) already exist in other threads in this forum. Just search for them. You will also find both of those apps in any plain vanilla or cyanogen rom that is made.
As for the phone and contacts, the vanilla ones are much better imo than sense. You will not miss the lag.

Thanks jitajt! Those fixed my problems. Im getting to the point where I'm fairly satisfied with everything about the phone. Just got Hydra's OCUV+N kernel installed and it's working great.
I have the opposite request of this thread actually; I need the HTC DeskClock files from a stock 2.1 sense ROM. Would anyone be able to post it please? Thank you in advance!
I miss having the timer and stop watch functionality that comes with it. My laundry always winds up sitting in the washer and dryer far too long without me setting a timer
Hello. I did a search for AOSP DeskClock and this is the only promising thread I found. I'm using an HTC CDMA Hero. Does anyone know if this is or isn't safe for me to use?
Also, do I just push to /system/app?
I don't know about you guys.. but the sense gallery loads up MUCH FASTER than this gallery 3D. UNINSTALLED
I have both apps in my rom and are runing fine

Camera FC
Hey Thanks jitajt!
I've been trying to get this to work on my samsung spica for a few days now.
But now the camera button (upper right) is giving me an FC error. It's because the camer app I have is SamsungCamera.apk NOT the stock camera app.
Could you provide the stock camera.apk for android 2.1?
Thanks.

Not sure there is a good replacement for it, but I agree, the 3D gallery (which is the normal Android gallery BTW) really does suck. Its slow, tries to be overly bling, and can't even show high res images with full detail. As you say, it suffers from bouts of instability too - it force closes on me when I try loads of different wallpapers about one time out of six.

Oh, I didn't know that. Anyway, I would really appreciate if someone could help me out with this one as the laggy gallery is really, REALLY annoying!
thanks so much!

But it doesn't support pingchat... if I set justpicture as my default picture viewer I get a error when trying to view picture received in pingchat. I m waiting for an update and another alternative.
please send your bug to developer code.google.com/p/justpictures/

As most of you know, cyanogenmod beats just about everything, in terms of speed and reliability. If you haven't tried it yet, then you HAVE to;http://www.cyanogenmod.com/
But coming from Sense, one thing i can't stand is how ugly (and sometimes not functional) some of the apps are.
This thread will attempt to compile a list of the top replacement apps for:
Camera(/Video camera)
Browser
Keyboard
Browser
Gallery
Dialer
SMS
Music player
Facebook Integration
I'll post the ones which are generally agreed to be the better ones in the next post, possibly with download links. Please try them, and others, and provide reviews.
Please note, i know that there cannot be one BEST app, but id like to get reviews of the top few, and then anyyone can choose for themselves.
And also, these aren't necessarily for Cyanogenmod only; if you're not happy with the stock apps you can try these out too.
CAMERA:
Ive tried MIUI camera and it works great; takes good pictures, functional and pretty fast. But I heard there were some problems with video capture; not recording 720p.
APK file is in a zip file attached to this post. Unzip, then install like normal APK. (Thanks stony2k)
Please note that this I am not responsible for this APK. Its supposed to work on the HTC Desire HD/Inspire 4G. I am not sure if it will work on all devices running CM7. If possible, do a NANDROID backup, and try it on other phones, and put up how it works for you
Camera360 Ultimate seems to be the favourite. Has a whole bunch of options and takes pretty decent pictures. Doesn't support video recording though which sucks.

BROWSER:
After trying a bunch of different browsers, I've got to say that Dolphin Browser HD is the smoothest, most functional of all the browsers, and far better than even the sense browser. It supports gestures, full screen mode, delete history on exit, add ons and all these features make this a must try:
LINK
Alternatively, you can try Dolphin Mini. Its extra light, so it uses a lot less memory, and always runs smooth:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.dolphin.browser
If you don't always use flash, I'd recommend Firefox.
https://market.android.com/details?id=org.mozilla.firefox&hl=en
KEYBOARD:
If you like the stock HTC keyboard, try this; its a VERY customisable version of HTC's keyboard:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416 (thanks cjward23)
Personally I'd recommend Better Keyboard 8; supports a lot of skins, so you can match it with your theme as well. Not to mention you can change the size of the keys, type of keyboard, sounds etc:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.betterandroid.betterkeyboard8
GALLERY:
Alot of people aren't happy with the stock gallery (gallery 3D) in CM7 roms. Personally I think its great; fast, smooth, convenient everything.
However, if it doesn't work for you, you could try Quickpic. The entire idea behind it is that its supposed to be really fast, and it definitely is. It takes a bit to load the thumbnails the first time you launch it, but its amazingly fast, if not a bit too minimalistic:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.alensw.PicFolder
DIALER: Alot of people like Go dialer, and I've got to agree with them. It has a lot of functions such as t9 dialer (dont know how you can do without it), support for themes etc.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.jbapps.contact
SMS GoSMS seems to be the most popular. It has a lot of functions, but best of all, everythings laid out in a very userfriendly format, and its completely free:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.jb.gosms
Music Player: Fortunately, there are several options out there that easily beat HTC's music player (which is pretty basic).
First, theres Poweramp. Personally, its my favourite. It has a lot of options that allow you to tweak sound quality, everything from equaliser to SRS and DOLBY, it supports album art download, transparent widgets, skins, fade in/out of songs etc. One of the best :
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.maxmpz.audioplayer
You can also try Playerpro: Everything feels as if it was very well thought, supports skins, widgets etc:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.tbig.playerpro
PROBLEM WITH ADOBE FLASH 10.2:
i.e. video plays but screen is blank, sound works. If you have this problem (NOT limited to cyanogenmod) then heres a fix thats worked for me, everytime: Uninstall previous flash versions, and kill browsers (task manager, reboot). Then download and simply install thanks geko95gek
http://www.multiupload.com/374XQZ7WG0
If you have a problem with flash, then Flash 10.3 might work for you, but it didn't for me.
If any problem with links, please do report
If you found anything helpful in this thread, kindly THANK me
Go Contacts for dialer. T9. Lots of functionality.
Go SMS Pro. Customiseable. Pretty good.
i dont know if that question belong here .. but its been in my head for long and i seriusly was looking for answers.
how do miui launcher (i am talking about the launcher included in miui roms) icons look so pretty and clean whereas same icons on any other launcher are a bit small and seems to be less appealing?
has anyone elc noticed this? or is this just in my head?
and i think if cyanogen mod changes the android settings menu a bit , making it more eye catching, i would love cm more
Great thread, and I agree a lot of stock Android apps are pathetic. Fortunately there are some good alternatives on the Market
I use:
-Quickpic instead of Gallery
-GO SMS instead of Stock Dialer
-TouchPal Dialer instead of Stock Phone (I've found TouchPal to be better than Dialer One and Go Dialer)
-Dolphin HD instead of Stock Browser (People complain about it being slow but I've found it to be very quick and the best browser IMO).
-Taptu instead of News & Weather (Taptu >> Pulse IMO)
best replacement sense-like dialer imho = contapps dialer. I have tried dialer1, dialer2, go dialer, etc (about 6 of them with t9).
best widgets (by FAR) = colorize widget, includes all the sexy ones, black theme like sense, about 3$ US.
+1 for go sms pro FTW. (stock sense blows too lol)
+1 for cam360 (ultimate).
Do you think you could post the apk for the camera and dspmanager from cm7? Preferably something compatible with stock froyo on vibrant.
thanks for all the reply guys! ill be looking into all of them.. and once i get more opinions ill pick up the favourite few and put them in the 2nd post so its convenient for everybody..
and if someone could get in touch with the cyanogenmod devs.. i get what theyve done is beyond amazing.. i mean these roms are unbelievably fast and just NEVER bloody lag.. if they can do that, they could also try to make the whole thing better looking? i just think it wouldnt be that hard for those devs since they definitley know what they are doing.. the thing i miss THE most when i leave Sense is the camera, and facebook integration..
the stock facebook integration only gets very very blurry contact display picures.. any solutions to this?
Personally, I cannot stand the Sense SMS app, and I think the CM Dialer with its transparencey is way sick too. Also, the 3D gallery it beautiful, I've never seen any photo app thats as integrated, smooth, and as slick as the gallery. I guess I just don't know what you mean by non-functional apps.
Default browser too, its the fastest of all the browsers, except MAYBE Opera, but I find just having all those extra plugins and themes and **** you can have with Dolphin, just slow page loading down in general, plus stock browser is already slick and allows for maximum screen viewing. It just lacks some kind of bookmark sync, like chromemarks or foxmarks etc.

Honestly, I was perfectly satisfied with the sense SMS app, until I came across GoSMS. Now its my default.. and i agree with you on the 3D gallery bit.. its definitely by favourite too, but a lot of people don't seem to like it for some reason so i was hoping to get together more alternatives for them..
and yes i have to admit the default browser isn't bad at all.. It is definitely a bit faster than the rest, but with all the little features the other browsers have nowadays i think its a little outdated..
what do you think about the camera, btw? happy with it? if not what do you use?
I don't mind the CM7 applications that much.
The only one I dislike is the Camera application (ugly).

then why dont you go ahead and try the MIUI app ive attached in the second post.. do nandroid first, since im not sure if itll work on phones besides desire hd.. let us know the result
Miren for browser, swype for keyboard
SwiftKey will always be my keyboard of choice. Nothing comes close.
Cool thread. I'm down with most of the stock apps, but the bundled File Browser is terrible.
File Browser:
File Expert (Free, theme support, support for root, batch processing, support for SMB, etc. Best free file browser on the market, easily.)
Camera:
Default (I still haven't gotten around to testing the MIUI camera, but I will try it later today.)
Browser:
Miren. (Slickest, smoothest browser on the market. Unfortunately, text does not reflow correctly after pinch zoom.)
Keyboard:
Swiftkey OR Flex OR Default. (Just got Flex from Amazon for free, and it's quickly become my new favorite. It allows input via voice, handwriting, trace, and taps. AND IT WAS FREE, yesterday.)
Gallery:
Stock. (I like Quickpic, but the stock video camera app does not allow you to use Quickpic as the default preview handler for some reason. It's an annoying bug/feature/etc.)
Dialer:
Stock
Contacts:
Stock. (None of Go's apps mesh well with the Haxzamatic's Honeybread theme, imho.)
Music Player:
PlayerPro or Google Music Beta. (Haven't plunked down the cash for PlayerPro yet, since Google Music Beta is pretty awesome. But if PlayerPro was cheaper, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.)
I just use the stock Camera app, I so rarely use my camera. I take 1 picture a month, if that, so the Camera app really isn't ever part of my concern tbh.
I'm running pretty much stock everything.
I would like to see the Camera UI get a makeover. I would like to have the look of the HTC Camera back (full screen instead of boxed in cropped view).
I'd love to be using Firefox, but... The relatively slow load time and lack of Flash just doesn't cut it, yet (I hope). (And I use Folder Organizer, which can tap the bookmark database.)
Now, this isn't app related, but I wish they would move some stuff into 'user' land. I'd like ROM Manager and Terminal to be in /data/app (or not at all). And the ringtone list is enormous. Yeah, I can deal with this with my root access, but I just don't want to have to deal with it EVERY time I update.
Am I ever going to switch to another ROM? No way!
Here's some of what I've found...
Keyboard: FlexT9
*Note: I have fat fingers and big hands (I wear size XL Gloves). I'm using a 3.8" screen on my N1, so your run-of-the-mill keyboards aren't cutting it for me.
Why FlexT9: Because it's a hybrid offering of Dictation, Swype and Swiftkey.
Have Tried: Swype, Swiftkey, HTC IME, Thumb keyboard.
Internet Browser: Skyfire
Why Skyfire: It's up to par performance wise, but what sets it apart for me is integrated Facebook and Twitter.
Have Tried: Default, Opera Mini, XScope, Firefox, Miren
File Browser: eFile
Why eFile: ASTRO was actually my default until today when someone mentioned another app. I went looking for it and the market had some other suggestions and eFile was one of them. I gave it a shot and so far I'm VERY impressed! It's the closest functionality to how a desktop File Browser works, which is surprisingly absent in many of the current popular offerings
Have Tried: File Expert, ASTRO
Email: k9mail
Why k9mail: Because Yahoo's email app SUX. HARD. For gmail I use the default gmail app, for all my other email accounts I pull them in through k9mail.
Have Tried: The default email app
Backup: TitaniumBackup
Why TB: Backup, Restore or Uninstall ANY app (including system apps). It also utilizes labels. Being a nightlies user, I have a label for the set of core apps that CM7 installs that I don't need. After a nightly install, I just filter for those apps and dump them in 1 fell swoop!
Have Tried: Just TB, I haven't had any temptation to go anywhere else.
thanks for all the reply guys! ill go through them and put some up in the 2nd post..
and just a thought.. does anyone personally know one of the cm7 devs? is it possible to get in touch with anyone of them to get them working on a better looking ui?
I found Dialer One interesting.
