Who cares about gingerbread? - General Questions and Answers

Why does everyone always ***** about gingerbread? My phone got it recently and nothing has changed except for the fact that I can say I have gingerbead.I don't even have the cool screen off animation that would totally be worth it because HTC sucks. If you want gingerbread so badly then root your phone and shut up. And Im talking to all the people on Android blog's who complain about not getting gingerbread yet. If it was ics then people would have a reason to complain but since its not even a good upgrade.

Gingerbread brings many advancements under the hood you don't grasp - such as improved Dalvik garbage collection and better power management.
As far as the screen off animation - did you bother to even see if you could enable it in display options? It's typically disabled by default.

1. gingerbread outperforms froyo (especially custom roms using gb); you dont like gb go back to froyo
2. you want the cool screen off animation, flash cm7, not htc's fault dont blame them
3. maybe those people that are complaining want official gb, not some unofficial, buggy custom rom
4. did you really make this thread to rant? i see no point in you making this thread unless you're trying to hit 10 posts

random reboots, battery pulls due to freezing, terrible battery life.
just wait till gingerbread is out then get the phone.
the only problem I've had with my phone is just the gps taking a long time to lock.. Other than I've been problem free and great battery life
My first one was crashing all the time. I just got a new one and it hasn't crashed yet, but the backlight is too intense and bleeds through. Wait for the S2.

Wow! You guys have a lot of dev support!

I'm borrowing my buddys inspire for two days to see how I like it. I own an Atrix. Right away I can see that the screen and build quality of this phone is much better than my Atrix. I also really like sense.
I asked my friend to put gingerbread and 3.0 sense on this phone so I can try it out. While the features are great the phone just doesnt feel as fast as my Atrix I need to find out exactly what Rom is on this phone so I can tell you guys, but my question is, is there anyway to put REAL sense 3.0 on this phone as well as gingerbread? Or are these things just themes?
I would try to find this info myself but you guys have like 30 roms listed in the dev forum. Also can you tell me if its possible to make the inspire very snappy while having sense 3.0 and gingerbread? So far I'm very much liking the phone and am considering making the switch.
If I'm understanding correctly, sense will backup all my settings and apps so that if I switch phones I won't have to do anything to get it back to the way I had it. Is this accurate?

Shoot another thing sorry. Everything on this phone appears zoomed in and the fonts are big. Does this have something to do with the resolution of the phone. I expected the opposite since the screen is a tad bigger.

Motoblur is the worst UI you can have. The sense 3.0 rom is a tad clunky but it looks nice I suppose. Try out cm7 or miui and you'll think this phones hardware runs circles around your atrix.

CM7 is basically vinilla android with some improvements so no sense, miui is the best rom ever period, rcmix kingdom is sense 3.0 but is still not a solid rom. i had an atrix, hjad hardware problems with it and got it traded, then i started looking at the inspire fourms and i became more and more unhappy with my atrix and switched it for an inspire and it was the best desision ever but if you want to back up all your apps and restore them it wont work when switching roms 100% of the time so i would recommend BUYING titanium backup because if yourestore apps with the free version it takes forever due to the fact that you have to hit yes for every app, wait for it to install, then hit done, for every app

I disagree. Miui is horrible. Blah.... It lasted 12 hours on my phone. And that only cause I went to sleep.
I am using Gingerbeast. Its awesome. Fast...I Have been OC'd on it @ 1450mhz for like 2 weeks straight. No Issues. No Sense tho. But sense, its garbage man. Sense is bloatware..... .. Install a launcher, install GO SMS and GO contacts.. Its all you needs. If you want sense for the social stuff, just down load the social apps. But with this phone why? I just use the browser and log into them normally...
Leedroid is the only other Rom I would recommend for Sense. I used it for weeks. Fast, OC-able and All the Sense you could want.
I also +1 Titanium Back up. Its awesome.

I'm a coredroid fan, sense 3.0 items, gb, oc'd. Pretty stable
It's strange to see one person love miui and another hate it haha
I basically like sense for its ability to keep everything backed up for me. Not for the widgets.
I think I'm going to make the switch from the Atrix based on the build quality alone. Do like the option for sense though.
Is there any other ATT phone that can be reccomended over the inspire at the moment? Or is the inspire at the top of the food chain for build quality, power, and modability?

As I am not experienced much yet with an unlocked bootloader, ill take your word for it. I already purchaser TB for my Atrix do that's not an issue. I just never fully understood how to use it so I kinda just sits in my app drawer.
If you could please just briefly highlight the diffrences in cm7 and miui I would really appreciate it. Also do you think flashing to cm7 will remove this "zoomed in, big font issue" I was referring to earlier? Or is it maybe that MOTO blur is zoomed out? Everything looks smaller on the Atrix.
It's strange to see such dislike for Sense. I've seen on many occasions in other phones forums, people asking how to put sense on their non HTC devices. I was under the impression it was the best.

Out of all the UI's Sense is the best. I've used miui once but it looks too similar to the iphone so I don't really know what the appeal is there. However there is a large number of people who like the stock look with CM7 because of how you can customize literally everything, after a while that gets repetitive and boring. Personally I prefer Sense because of the hardware acceleration in the UI and the eye candy. Out of all the UI's it's the only one that doesn't look like it was designed by a 10 year old kid.
Go flash Leedroid with all the patches and you'll see what I mean.

internally MIUI and CM7 are very similar the biggest difference is the way they actually feel when using them, its mainly the ui, with CM7 you can customize EVERTHING but with MIUI most of its their you just have to see if you like it but if you do flash miui id recommend Rey's coustom rom MIUI in the desire hd fourms. but with titanium backup what it does is makes very precise backups of all your apps and saves it to your sd card and when you move roms you just download titanium backup and restore, most of this is done thorough batch which you go to backup/restore, hit menu, and select backup all user apps with data, but NEVER select system data when moving roms because it can cause some serious problems
My opinion:
Love sense. My favorite UI, and I like all roms on this forum. Tried every single one. My absolute favorite aosp rom is gingerbeast. Favorite sense rom is stock rooted and gtg's inspired ace. Then comes miui. As for the atrix, forget it. I had the atrix and it kept overheating, so I got the inspire and it was the best decision ever! Best part-no motoblur
As far as the people who don't like sense, go spend a year on touchwiz or motoblur

Well then you might as well flash an aosp rom. Sense wont keep all you stuff backed up throughout roms(I don't remember it restoring any of my stuff)
aosp roms will keep EVERY app backed up and will restore them when you reflash or update the rom. If you uninstall an app, it wont restore it.
Works perfect.

Why flash roms?

So I was just wondering why would we flash roms? I mean the current stock os is almost bug free + when flashing roms we are faced with some major bugs sometimes.
I know that we would have the choice to remove bloatware, cutomise status bar, and sometime oc. That's all nice but still I don't see why not leave it as is?
Please excuse my ignorance. I just came from a rooted Dinc w/ miui
And I wanna have a better understanding.

For me it's the freedom to do with my phone what I want. These developers kick out some sweet features that we'll never see from a stock ROM, and they get us the latest software before the manufacturers. I bug here or there is well worth it for me, and if it's to bad you can always revert. If you prefer the stock experience, than by all means leave it alone. But me, I'm a tinkerer. Be it a car, truck, bike... or yes, even a phone, I can't leave well enough alone.
Because we can
To pick up chicks......I haven't met one yet that's not turned on by 48+ mflops!
Can't do that with stock.....
This might seem like an odd answer... I flash so I can have a standard interface on my phones. I've had a droid, droid x, and thunderbolt in the last year and a half (my company does some android development on in house apps for one of our clients, and we go through a lot of test phones). having something close to a stock interface minimizes the daily annoyances of moving between those phones.... which is why I use the aosp roms.

I'm sure they've tried many times on multiple kinds of devices (I know 2 teams that tried to port sense to the cappy I don't think they got anywhere near a stable release) its just a whole lot more effort than a rom made for your phone
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
its more than just the OS. those UI's arent just skins. they rely heavily on kernel support, and the framework is deeply integrated and dependent upon the core device. sense relies on it being HTC, TW relies on it being samsung, and blur relies on motorola....
Back in the day when I had the original droid i remember seeing a sense rom made for it. I never used it or even thought about it since it was pretty unstable. But I guess it is possible, just impracticle and way too much work for all the super awesome devs.

No working data/wifi/camera, probably no working Bluetooth, its about the same stage that most of the UI ports get to before its realized that its beyond hope or the devs have worked on it so long that they grow tired of working on it.

All those satisfied with g2x GTFIH

Now i know LG abandoned this ship. I'm just as pissed off as the next guy about that one. I wouldn't mind an official jb or at least an ics update. But either way, I'm honestly quite satisfied with this phone and its performance. I'm running standard cm7 nightlies (latest) with Trinity t15 kernel and wolf script mod. Battery life is decent and bad when i whore wifi but that's the biggest iissue with my g2x. With all the hate threads around this forum there have to be others who have positive experiences with this device.
This phone is awesome. Since I started carrying around my portable nuclear power plant all my battery issues are gone.
Seriously though, if you use the phone the battery will drop. That is a law of physics you can't avoid. My problem with this phone was that with stock ROM the battery dropped a lot even when I did absolutely nothing. CM7 solved that, so I am happy.
I still don't get sufficient standby life so I am working on fixing an old HTC amaze (fixed bootloop, now waiting for screen to arrive). My wife's amaze can get over 4 days of standby and I just noticed that she has not rebooted it in close to 400 hours.

4 days of standby time? Sorry this is the g2x forum I don't know what that means.
Lol that's crazy!
I have about six months left until I'm available for an upgrade. Thinking the new s4, razor or nexus.
I agree this is still a pretty slick phone. I'm loving the dual boot setup with CM7/Trinity ELP as my runner and CM10.1 as my gaming/test platform. I'd probably be way more disappointed with the phone if I was stuck with stock software, but thanks to the awesome devs and their work I'm very happy with this phone.

I am currently running cm7 with Mazout360's kernel and wolfscript. I have themed my phone to be as similar to ICS/JB as possible, as that was the only way I could return to GB. I am very content with how it turned out.
In the end, I have accepted that I will probably never have fully functioning ICS or JB on this phone. But, I guess all that I was really looking for was that updated look and crisp feel, which I have since obtained!
Although I will move on to some sort of Nexus when I have better funding, I am satisfied with the g2x.
The only problem I seem to have with cm7 is this noticeable static flicker that appears very quickly after turning on the display. It only seems to do that with cm7 roms.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but is it possible to get the jellybean notification bar on gingerbread? Like with notifications you can swipe away and quick message replies to texts and all that. That might be the only thing keeping me on jellybean right now because I love the way it feels so intuitive and such.

There are apps for pop up notifications though.

Oh I went straight from Froyo on my old Optimus V to Jellybean on the G2X (I rooted and installed Paranoid Android right away) so I thought swipe notifications was a Jellybean thing. I'll install a Gingerbread ROM when I get back from work and try to make it look and feel like JB.
On topic, yes I'm very satisfied with my G2X, but that might also be because I wasnt expecting a high end phone when I bought it from eBay a few months ago. Also I have a Nexus 7 for any apps that I use that require a hardware accelerated jellybean.

For those of you who are content with cm7, even though it is old software, I am working on my "Speedster" rom. It is still quite alpha but my goals is to optimize CM7 for our G2xs. I am also doing a bunch of software updates inside and using Mazkrnl to have speed and stability. I use the latest ADW launcher in it and JB sounds so it really gives CM7 new life and gives it a great CM10 feel. I can't do anything about play store, still limited to 2.3 aps. No google keep/now
Pie, I'm willing to flash your rom whenever its out of the alpha stage. Or let me know if you need a tester
