Lag in operation? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
First few days with Nexus S 4G and love it. I have noticed random lockups or delays in navigating the home screen or applications. I use SPB Shell 3D on my Tab10.1 and used it on my Evo 4G prior to the Nexus. Never really had this querliness and just love the app.
I use Active Apps (pay version) and see my ram gets in the high 200's to the 300+ RAM available. I can clear level 1 and 2 back/foreground processes and that seems the clear up the lag. But thw lowest it goes is low 200's. It is somewhat alarming considering I am not throwing anything at the Nexus that I didn't with the Evo 4G. I figure the newer 1ghz would perform pretty similar.
Was I wrong to assume? Is there something I should be looking out for? Is this a known issue with the phone or current Android version? Is there a work around or fix?
Thanks in advance. I know I could uninstall SPB and ensure that isn't taking up a ton of RAM or isn't the cause of the lag. But thought I'd ask before I undo the hours I took customizing my setup.

why don't you just do a titanium backup of the application settings and then remove it? i'm 99% sure that is the cause of the problem...

Ill look into it. I use Mybackup Pro but don't think it takes on app data. I thought Titianium requires root but ill check. so far its not hindered performance but ive tried to watch RAM levels and services via Active Applicationa program.

[Q] How's that HTC Inspire?

I have the Atrix 4G and am having too many issues with it. So I was thinking of transferring over to the Inspire.
Few questions:
-Hows the battery?
-Are the data speeds any better than the Atrix?
-Does the UI and the OS run smoothly?
UI is solid and runs well. Battery is good if you treat it nicely as far as wifi, data and brightness. Can't tell you anything about data speeds vs. Atrix. What kind of issues are you having with the Atrix?

HSPA+ wont be deployed til next month.
Just picked mine up today. LOVE it so far. Noticed that it seems to charge much faster than my friend's Incredible and doesn't seem to drain as quickly. This phone is infinitely better than the Captivate I returned. The only thing I miss at all is Swype. Gonna install that later today.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
there are people installing swype and they are saying it works well. I personally have never got to the point where I liked it. It just made me have to think too much when trying to compose anything but to each thier own...
I've had the Inspire for almost a week now.
Hows the battery?
- The battery isn't as bad as I thought. You still have to babysit it, though. Turning the desplay down and staying on top of Bluetooth and Wifi usage will help. I can get through the day with only 1 charge. 1 Push email, 2 other emails @ 30 min. syncs, half dozen calls, moderate texting, and moderate web browsing.
Are the data speeds any better than the Atrix?
- Don't have the Atrix to test. There are reviews on the web that have tried and tested both. It'd be best if you try to find those to make a conclusion. Keep in mind though, data speeds are only as could as the carrier. In this case, we're dealing with the Death Star. Read into that what you may.
Does the UI and the OS run smoothly?
- The US and OS run as smooth as warm butter over toast. Many reviews online also report the same. I see no lags. The 2nd generation Snapdragon processor definitely helps. You won't be disappointed in OS speed.
As for switching between the Atrix, you may need to look into battery life depending on how you use your phone. As far as data speeds, do a little research as I don't know the answer. You won't be disappointed with the Inspire though. I LOVE the phone!
I exchanged my inspire and got the atrix; big mistake. I had to go back to radio shack to get my inspire back. The atrix is not for me. I like HTC and sense.

I've never used the Atrix, but the Inspire is amazing. I took my phone off the charger this morning at ten and still have 48% left. This is with moderate texting, web browsing, market, and just messing around with the operating system, so the small battery doesnt affect me that much.
I'd go with it.

The Inspire "only" has a 1230 mAh battery, but it's also a single-core, extremely efficient CPU. Talk time is rated about the same for both phones, but the standby on the Atrix is much, much lower (372 vs 250 hours, according to gsmarena). What does that mean? I suspect it means the Inspire is much kinder to it's battery.
Having said that, I rebooted my (mostly) stock phone today, and noticed the battery life was much, much worse. Loading Advanced Task Killer** I saw there were about 30 running apps, with about 111mb free. Killed the non-essentials, and things seem better now.
** I don't advocate task killers, and I never use them in automatic mode-- they are useful occasionally, though.

Ok, I was asking because its the same with me. I really prefer a keyboard but I dont really think I want the LG Quantum (I have an upgrade coming up and I think im gonna go with the Inspire) so the inspire is the phone I'm considering, but I was never big on touch screen keyboards because of response and ease of use. Plus, all of my recent phones have been windows phones, but I wanna try an Android powered phone. As long as I can sync my contacts from Outlook and create word docs im fine.
i have the inspire and love it

I really enjoy the Inspire. My battery life was ok until I loaded CM7 on it. Once I did that, my battery life improved astronomically. I'm torn between my iPhone 4 and Inspire. I wish there was a way to cross them because there are aspects I truly love about both.
Task killers are gay, they don't anything helpful. Not with Android 2.1 and up... they're useless. Android operating system.knows what processes to keep and kill when needed... freeing up RAM on an Android OS is not necessarily a "good" thing. Just saying.

[Q] What Hoggs Your Ram?

I would like to know what are your guys readings of RAM usage. Mine sits around 240MB/339MB
Is that high or normal? I do have quite a bit of widgets on different home screens so I dont know what the baseline is. Please share your results.

Task MAnagers!?!?!
I'm not sure if i am 100% right about this maybe won of the senior members who does know can enlighten us on this...
But I remember reading somewhere that task managers some times can hurt your phones RAM usage. I don't use one anymore unless it comes stock. and then I rarely find a reason to open it on mine. In standby I am running around 80-100 with 200-300 of freem RAM so with the SGS4G i don't think i will find a reason to use more than the stock utilities. I somtimes will installl a tool to monitor the RAM to see what I'm usin but every once in a while I go through and uninstall anything I don't need right away. I figure ussually being in good internet coverage I can always put something back.
So does anyone else know about wether or not the "Task Manager" could actually be a tantric in some cases?

So widgets are the ram hog on this phone? I have been constantly clearing ram in the task manager to help with speed. I only run clock, battery, and calender widgets on my device. Are they enough to boost me all the way to 240+ even after a RAM clearing? Considering the age of this thread is this still the case with new ROM's that are starting to roll out? I'm still stock, and very noob to android devices, but the urge for mods is growing given the positive responses to them.

You shouldn't have to worry too much about RAM usage. A lot of it used by the OS. But yeah widgets does lower it and whatever app you're using. But I hope you don't resort to using task killers just to save 50mb's of RAM. It's there for use and shouldn't be looked at too much.
Mine shows about 400/626, but haven't noticed any big difference in battery drain when it's at 300/626.
Simple answer....everything hogs ram. The best way to tell what's worse is settings » applications » manage applications and watch your ram usage when you have certain things running. You will notice what is hogging more than others.

Thank you for the info everybody. Been ruinning just fine all day with the ram almost maxed out, hard to break that task manager habit though lol. Goona keep reading before I root-flash-mod need to make sure I get it right the first time.
On the moon our weekends are so advanced they encompass the entire week
Samsung and Tmo set many bloatware to run ALL the time and hogs RAM
via Linda file manager and auto memory manager (which tweak's android's memory management, not a standard task killer), i saw many apps that always run (many with priority equals to android system and the phone app) such as "wifi calling, visual voice mail, my account, qik, device management, drm, etc.
not everyone use these apps and they take up precious RAM and tiny amount of CPU cycles.
worse, however, is how the phone keeps loading unused, unaccessed, unwanted apps into memory (been weeks since I used pandora, yet it keeps getting reloaded into memory).
from clean boot, I get 150mb free. after a week, I get 45-55mb. This causes memory manager to kill off app as soon as you switch away and alot of stutter (dont you hate it when your browser gets killed)
Dont know if theres a fix for this. I tried tweaking the OOM parameters but it doesnt seem to work on this phone. Samsung probably tweaked something that broke this.

Low ram?

Im really sorry for asking but, Ive exhausted all other search methods to find an answer. What can I do about the extremely low ram availability? Ive got like, on a good day 110 out of 329mb available. Is this normal? Ive tried reading up on flashing a new kernel but Im not positive this will fix the issue.
Im running the uvkg4 2.3.4 with the kernel that came with it. Go launcher sits on top of that using about 18mb. Maybe Im just expecting to much from my phone?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Even if its to yell at me cause I missed something while searching on here.

So, May be we are expecting too much from our galaxies!!
However in a HTC phone( i dont remember the model) it has 784MB RAM!!!...
the best way to free Ram is close useless running apps and uninstalling them!

My wife has an LG Optimus for Tmo...and she's getting like, 261 of 418. The difference seems only slight but, I'd like all the ram I can possibly have. I use the built in task manager to keep up with running services. TB for freezing or uninstalling. I don't have a whole heck of a lot of things left to kill that would equal 100mb. Maybe 60 at most.
I don't know. I am still interested in the whole kernel thing though. I've read what a kernel is, and is supposed to do. I just don't understand what exactly the benefit is of flashing one over. Like drhonks, I've read all about it everywhere...for the life of me can't find what the exact benefits are. Same thing with the modem. I'd like to flash that too to fix the constant drop of data connection even though it reads 4g, but I don't know that that will fix that (lots of thats) problem either.
Does it matter? 100mb of free ram is the same as 200mb free isn't it? It's all unused. with GB, it has a pretty good system for managing tasks, so I didn't think it would be a problem.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
Well, that's true. Even while trying to hurt my phone it doesn't bog down or lag out due to low ram. Thank you for the insight.
Also, with the modem thing..should I open up another question for this? Its something that's now becoming quite the hassle, it drops data way to frequently to be normal.
I read somewhere once that having lower ram is actually a bad thing. The android operating system stores information on apps to help it launch those apps faster. When you clear it out it takes longer to launch because it does not have the information stored anymore.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
For the most part I only have the necessary things required to make my phone work turned on. Aside from Go launcher, and a couple widgets (1-4mb a piece) running. I'm just stumped on where the rest of the memory is, or what's using it.
Are you getting a bunch of launcher reloads? If so, then you might wanna consider switching roms. I tried a few rom/launcher combinations and stuck with audiophile ftw with the newest init.d pack. Stopped my launcher reloads unless I was using a really ram intensive app like plants vs. zombies.
The ram operates like on any computer. if it is cleared, you need to rebuild your workspace cache. If you clear the ram on a phone, you will have to wait a bit longer for the cache to rebuild. It's minimal though. unless you get an error or an fc, I would say there is no need to clear your ram on the phone, especially with the great built in task manager. For games zombies or pewpew, yea, it makes sense to clear it prior to playing, but the system should do it for you anyway, shouldn't it?
Also, do what fbis suggested. Will make a difference
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
Yeah honestly you think about what takes the most ram in use stuff like browsers, skype, youtube etcc...but of course you Wont be using all of them at the same time!
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA at App
After using my phone for a while, I usually have 60-80mb free. Just different services running etc... Phone doesn't slow down, never have any real memory problems, and the only time I sometimes get a launcher reload is after playing a memory hungry game like PvZ or Gun Bros, and even then it's pretty rare.
Unless it's malfunctioning, those apps sitting in memory will just close if something needs it, you can see this first hand if you view your free memory right after playing a game, I usually see anywhere between 140-200mb free. It then gradually goes down as I use other apps and as some of them auto sync etc.
Except in the case of a buggy app, Android seems to be pretty good at managing memory.
I believe some of the low memory paranoia would go away if we had a task manager like Windows has where it tells you what memory is Cached, Available, and Free. I'd be freaking out as my netbook only has 3 mb free out of 2 gigs right now if Windows didn't tell me the other info lol.
Yea, I'm not getting any heavy launcher reloads. Even if I'm playing a Gameloft game everything seems to run quite smooth. I guess I was just freaking out about the numbers.
I thank you all for the responses and help. I think I'll do a little more research on flashing modems and such before I ask anything about that. There's a helluva lot of information to read about.
As what everybody said here, the 100ish MB free RAM is fine. Android caches the processes so it'll load up faster when you open an app again. Of course, if you clear your RAM, you clear these caches too. When Android needs more memory, it'll kill an app to provide for more memory.
Also, do NOT use a task killer. I can't emphasize that enough. Using that will kill your necessary apps, which will eventually cause your phone to do random reboots. Many people have reported that.

[Q] Why is phone so laggy?

I've got a sgs+ I updated to android 2.3.5 from 2.3.3 it improved the overall lagginess abit. I have tried almost everything not too difficult to smoothen things out because I'm not really into custom rom kinda deep stuff. For instance, temple run, lags every 10 secs and I fail. Angry birds? Same thing. My buddy with SGS "classic" does not have any of these kind of problems.

If you want to have a better gaming experience (no lag..) you can either buy a phone with a stronger cpu, or root (which is really easy) and see if there is any custom kernels available for your device. With a custom rom and kernel you can make your phone more powerful than it is by increasing the speeds of your cpu. Phone's that don't have enough power don't play certain games well. I know you said you aren't into roms... It's really not that complicated. There is no way to make your phone more powerful, than to root and install a custom rom and kernel... Hope that helped.

The only problem with that is that the sgs+ has a 1.4ghz processor *COUGH*. its a single core but 1.4 is more than enough for temple run or angry birds. have you checked what programs are in the background? maybe there is a process that is polling every few seconds and lags the phone.

Yeah my phone too can get pretty laggy crashy and unstable when I am using it allot without turning it off.
ICS on my Samsung Gio lagged allot so I had to switch back to an earlyer version which increased my CPU performance by 400%, (however, graphic performance change was almost negligible)
You could also try something like a2sd, if you already have something like that your SDcard might be slow. (I suggest you get some confirmation on this one from more experienced android users before actually going and buying a new one, since I am quite new to this whole android stuff).
Hope I could be of service,

You probably have a lot of apps running at the background. Try installing a 3rd party app manager and end all apps. I mean all. Should work. If not then your phone has a problem. SGS+ SHOULDN'T lag behind the SGS not unless the SGS is rooted.
What is your "better phone for games"? Will it be released for ever?
Buy an iPhone for 0 lag gaming.. Android has some lags.
If you don't want to root and install ROMs then pretty much your only option is to uninstall unnecessary services and apps. Try uninstalling an app, testing the game, and keep uninstalling untill you know which app is possibly the offending one.

Rebooting helps for some 10 minutes, I really don't want to reboot that often. My phone goes 40-50fps but lags 1/4 seconds every 10 secs. I sometimes get bigger fps drops when playing reckless racing 2. I guess that is for dual core processors, but mostly it runs fairly well apart from those little lags

Sigh...... advanced task killers or any of them are just a pile or **it, they just use up ram, on android we all know theres no way to close all apps, they'll just keep opening anyway and they can't close most apps. It drains your battery and has your processors trying harder with a ram drainage. Absolutely USELESS.

hello
dear user it may occur to you that sometimes when you apply a custom rom to a phone it is now built right for that phone because of all the different specs to that phone so it would be best advised to stick with the set defaults if you don't realy know what you are doind (like me) but also you could try and root is (universil androrot) and then use some programs like memory booster or just un install some apps from your device all together so free up some of the phones memorry.
hope it helped daveveej.

CM10.1 Memory

I can't seem to find a definitive answer anywhere as to why our 1 GB RAM only shows up at 669 MB on CM10.1 nightlies. I can understand the ROM requiring some space, but 355 MB seems excessive.
So what's the real deal behind this? Other 1 GB phones seem to still show up with 900+ MB in "About Phone" - eg the One X, also using CM10.1.
The reason I am keen to know is because using the default minfree values (I don't really want to have to tweak these), I find apps close WAY too often when something runs in the foreground. I have trimmed down my memory footprint majorly, have only a couple of essential widgets and three home screens. I don't think that in 2013 with a phone that has 1 GB of RAM one should need to minimise things down to one home screen and one widget just to be able to run memory-hungry apps.
So does anyone know why CM10.1 eats all the RAM, how to get it back, or how to stop apps from dying all the time? I can't even get through a 3DMark or Basemark X benchmark without it crashing halfway through due to lack of memory, even with all background apps closed.
Any insight would be much appreciated.
same issues
I have a sgs1 (i9000) and am having exactly the same issue.
CM10 was fine..I always run the screen filter app as I find even the dimmest of brightness too much. It NEVER would close this app before, since CM10.1 on using any app it does it all the time!
What is so f******* frustrating is that i am very ill in bed & with photosensitivity..so going from a screen dim of 38% to whatever the default auto is (really, any of these stock settings are bad for ur eyes long term!) just makes me scream!!!
I have 386mb or so, so obviously this is not the fault of my phone since u r having the same issue with much more memory than me it's something they have changed in CM10.1 since screen filter is a tiny app.
I frequently close all apps with a task manager & anyone that thinks they r a smart a** telling me 'android has its own memory management..u don't need to do that..it will make ur phone slower blah blah crap is talking up their exit hole lol I have disabled most apps running on various state changes via autostarts & my phone works faster for it! Some games WON'T load unless I close apps or restart - I'd like to see ur excuses for this lol There is a difference with the technical & the reality in this sense believe me!
I am considering going back to CM10 as this issue not to be sorted by now is ridiculous, but perhaps only a few have it as I don't see any replies to ur question.
I also thought about this... Where is the RAM? I tried CM10 and back to stock for 1 Day after flashing... I am more satisfied with my cleaned stock..

If I remember right some kind of cache is on ram but even sense don't have 1gb yet One X does.

I feel you. I got the same problem with CM10.1. CM10.0 left me with a total of roughly 783MB. Apparently I was told it's something to do with the kernel and that the developers have not been able to work out the memory management.

669 here too

You'll never get the full 1gb, because the gpu etc need some shared ram too. But I want to know why cm10.0 has more memory available than cm10.1 on the same device
Well it seems the latest nightlies (unofficial) since yesterday seem to have resolved the memory issue.

Did someone confirm this?
Is there now something like ~800MB usable from within Android?

No the total usable is the same (669 MB) but there is much more of it free due to some memory leaks being fixed.
Thats nice to hear. Waiting to see if some bright mind fixes the low available memory issue on the One S. My other device the Xperia T has the same (Qualcomm snapdragon S4) chip set but much more usable memory in CM10.1(800MB)
Any news on this? I saw that the one s c2 has got 800+mb free on cm10.1: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2263235
